Amorphous MoO2-wrapped Mo supported low-crystalline Co nanosheets for enhanced OH bond cleavage: synergistic effect of abundant active sites and robust interfaces

Fenglong Wu,Xiao Tian,Jin Song,Ying Zhang,Wei Li

The activation of the water molecule (H₂O) serves as the rate-determining step for hydrogen (H 2 ) evolution from the photo-assisted hydrolysis of ammonia borane (NH₃BH₃). Therefore, developing a low-cost efficient catalyst that can expedite the cleavage of O H bonds in H₂O is needed for improving hydrogen production efficiency in practical applications. Here, we prepared a supported non-noble metal catalyst (Co/Mo@MoO 2 –200) with a large number of active sites, comprising ultrathin low-crystalline cobalt (Co) nanosheets grown on amorphous molybdenum oxide (MoO 2 )-coated molybdenum (Mo) nanoparticles (Mo@MoO 2 –200), which serves as a high-performance non-noble metal catalyst to accelerate the activation of O H bonds in H 2 O. Notably, visible light irradiation facilitates the formation of ultrathin Co nanosheets by inducing the localized surface plasmon resonance of MoO 2 , as verified by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images. Moreover, X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) spectra confirm the electron transfer from Co nanosheets to O sites in Mo@MoO 2 –200, establishing robust interfaces. Co/Mo@MoO 2 –200 exhibits high catalytic performance with the turnover frequency (TOF) value of 110.8 min −1 under visible light irradiation, which is greater than that of Co/Mo by 1.21 times and most of the reported Co-based catalysts. DFT calculations reveal that the Mo@MoO 2 –200 support in the catalyst can promote the Co-adsorption of NH 3 BH 3 and H 2 O, while facilitating H 2 desorption. Particularly, the Co/Mo@MoO 2 –200 can significantly decrease the activation energy barrier of the O H bond in H 2 O, compared with pristine Co and Mo@MoO 2 –200. This paper presents a flexible catalyst design strategy for NH 3 BH 3 hydrolysis and other H 2 O-associated catalytic reactions.

Self-Assembling of a Mo–Al Composite toward Efficient Catalysts for RWGS Reaction: Overcoming the Trade-off between Ultrasmall Size and High Loading

Shuo Cao,Ying Ma,Wei Chu,Bingsen Zhang,Bo Peng,Yuefeng Liu

Molybdenum carbides have received attention for the reverse water gas shift (RWGS) reaction. Normally, MoCx-based catalysts are synthesized via a high-temperature carbonization of 1100 K, leading to the agglomeration of the active phase. In order to minimize the atomic motion leading to single growth, insertion of heteroatoms has been attempted with the usage of components in the catalyst substrate. The current work applied the self-assembling strategy to prepare a Mo–O–Al composite instead of traditional impregnation before carburization. The dynamic structure evolution and detailed coordination environment of the active phase are investigated by in situ X-ray diffraction, quasi in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, in situ transmission electron microscopy, and temperature-programmed surface reaction techniques. Our findings reveal that Al doping enables carburization at a lower temperature (200 °C) via the topotactic pathway, yielding α-MoCx (fcc); even at a loading as high as 40 wt %, the catalyst maintains an ultrasmall particle size (1 nm). The optimized catalyst exhibits a RWGS reaction rate of 52.1 μmolCO2·gMo–1·s–1 at 400 °C, representing a 2.5-fold enhancement over bulk β-Mo2C. This work provides a possible solution for maintaining high dispersion at high metal loading for catalyst preparation, specially requiring a high temperature during either synthesis or reaction.

Optimizing hydrogen adsorption via Mo-doped Ni3S2 nanoparticles anchored on Ni–N–C framework as an efficent electrocatalyst for all-pH hydrogen evolution

Conghan Zhang,Jiating Cheng,Fan Yang,Yang Sun,Xinyang Sun,Kexin Wei,Guang Ma,Junpu An,Meitong Zhao,Jiahui Liu,Yongfeng Li

Electrolytic water splitting using transition metal sulfide catalysts has garnered a lot of attention lately. Herein, a composite material consisting of Mo-doped Ni 3 S 2 nanoparticles supported on N-doped carbon layers with anchored Ni single atoms (Mo–Ni 3 S 2 /Ni–N–C) was synthesized using a two-step hydrothermal process. These features enable Mo–Ni 3 S 2 /Ni–N–C to achieve low overpotentials of 71, 58, and 89 mV for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) at 10 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH, 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 , and 1 M PBS, respectively. After 20 h of durability testing, its current density retains over 95 % of the initial value across diverse pH electrolytes. Mo doping enhances structural stability, enabling wide pH applicability. Electron transfer from Ni 3 S 2 nanoparticles to Ni single atoms accelerates kinetics and boosts intrinsic activity, which improves HER performance. Theoretical calculations confirm that Ni single atoms possess ideal H∗ adsorption energy, which optimizes H∗ adsorption capability of Ni 3 S 2 . This work offers suggestions for creating excellent low-cost electrolytic water catalysts.

Oxygen vacancies activate electrophilic-nucleophilic dual sites in Mo-doped NiOOH for hydrogen evolution via urea-assisted electrocatalysis approaching industrial-level current densities

Tao Chen,Jiaxing Song,Menglei Xu,Zaifang Li

Urea-assisted hydrogen production can effectively improve the overall reaction rate, but achieving industrial-scale current density and long life is still a huge challenge. Herein, Vo-NiMoOOH/NF was prepared by hydrothermal-selenization-electrochemical reconstruction, which can achieve the industrial-grade current density of ∼860 mA cm −2 in an H-type reaction cell at 1.5 V (vs. RHE). A series of characterizations and DFT calculations reveal that the presence of oxygen vacancies and electrophilic-nucleophilic sites improves the D-band center of Ni, reduces the oxidation potential of Ni, accelerates the reconstruction of the catalyst, and inhibits the oxygen evolution reaction. Electrocatalytic urea oxidation coupled with hydrogen production was achieved in a two-electrode flow cell utilizing Vo-NiMoOOH/NF as a bifunctional catalyst. The current density of 1 A cm −2 at a cell voltage of 2.71 V and stable operation for more than 150 h at a current density of 500 mA cm −2 were realized, exhibiting excellent catalytic activity and stability.

Role of host matrix on NIR emission and ratiometric thermometry properties in Nd3+/Yb3+ co-doped CaGd2(MO4)4 (M = W, Mo) phosphors

Chunyang Zhang,Yifan Wang,Zexiong Wang,Shilong Zhao,Ruoshan Lei,Shiqing Xu

The development of ultrasensitive thermometric phosphors has become an active area of research due to their appealing applications in the contactless temperature detection field. Herein, the scheelite-related compounds—CaGd 2 (WO 4 ) 4 : Nd 3+ , Yb 3+ and CaGd 2 (MoO 4 ) 4 : Nd 3+ , Yb 3+ , which exhibit high sensing capacity—are successfully prepared and systematically characterized. The X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that CaGd 2 (WO 4 ) 4 : Nd 3+ , Yb 3+ exhibits the monoclinic structure, whereas CaGd 2 (MoO 4 ) 4 : Nd 3+ , Yb 3+ is in the tetragonal phase. The maximum phonon cut-off energy of CaGd 2 (WO 4 ) 4 : Nd 3+ , Yb 3+ is 929 cm −1 , slightly larger than that of CaGd 2 (MoO 4 ) 4 : Nd 3+ , Yb 3+ (904 cm −1 ). Irradiated by 980 nm laser, PL spectra consist of the Nd 3+ : 4 F j → 4 I 9/2 (j = 7/2, 5/2, 3/2) and Yb 3+ : 2 F 5/2  →  2 F 7/2 emissions located in the near-infrared (NIR) range. Negative and positive thermal quenching behaviors are observed for the emissions of Nd 3+ (754, 802, and 868 nm) and Yb 3+ (1008 nm), respectively, attributed to the cooperative effects of the phonon-assisted energy transfer process of Yb 3+ → Nd 3+ and excited state absorption process of Nd 3+ . Moreover, the host material can affect the luminescence properties, thermal enhancement factor of the NIR anti-Stokes emission, and thermal sensing performance of the Nd 3+ -Yb 3+ pair. Consequently, CaGd 2 (MoO 4 ) 4 : Nd 3+ , Yb 3+ exhibits higher sensing sensitivity (S r-max  = ∼6.00%K −1 ) than CaGd 2 (WO 4 ) 4 : Nd 3+ , Yb 3+ (S r-max  = ∼5.56%K −1 ). This study provides useful information for the construction of high-performance ratiometric thermometers based on the inverse thermal dependence of the NIR emissions of Nd 3+ and Yb 3+ ions.

Synergistic effect of sulfur vacancy, internal electric field and Mo-S bond toward highly-efficient charge utilization for MoS2/Sv-MnS/ZnIn2S4 photocatalysts

Wenxue Zhao,Aihua Yan,Zigao Su,Fei Huang,Jixu Zhang,Ye Gao,Huaqi Yuan,Bolei Hui,Heng Wang

ZnIn 2 S 4 is a promising and typical semiconductor for photocatalytic water splitting into hydrogen production. However, the low charge-carrier utilization restricts its hydrogen evolution performance and practical application. In this work, a synergistic strategy of sulfur vacancy (S v ), internal electric field (IEF) and Mo-S bond was utilized for improving the charge-carrier utilization of MoS 2 /S v -MnS/ZnIn 2 S 4 composites. In particular, Z-scheme S v -MnS/ZnIn 2 S 4 heterojunction not only tackled the charge-carrier recombination problem but also improved the redox capability. Meanwhile, Schottky-type MoS 2 /S v -MnS contact further promoted the charge transfer through Mo-S bond “bridge”, accelerated the surface hydrogen reduction reaction kinetics, and thus boosted the charge-carrier utilization. As a result, the optimal MoS 2 /S v -MnS/ZnIn 2 S 4 catalysts could expeditiously produce 1.75   mL of hydrogen production within 3   h, and achieve a photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of 13.02   mmol   g -1 h -1 . This work provides an ingenious method to synthesize ZnIn 2 S 4 -based photocatalysts with highly-efficient charge-carrier utilization.

Electrocatalytic nitrate-to-ammonia conversion using Mo-S-Fe3O4 nanoplates on foam iron electrode: Synergistic effects of Lewis-acid and Lewis-base sites

Maonan Ran,Guan Zhang

The NO 3 − electroreduction process presents a promising alternative to the Haber-Bosch method by offering dual benefits: removal of nitrates from wastewater coupled with efficient NH 3 production. Herein, Mo and S doped Fe 3 O 4 nanoplates grown on foam Fe (Mo-S-Fe 3 O 4 @FF) with electron-rich Mo δ+ state was synthesized through a facile hydrothermal approach. Notably, Mo-S-Fe 3 O 4 @FF electrode achieved a nearly fourfold enhancement in ammonium yield compared to foam Fe electrode, while also enhancing the NH 3 Faradaic efficiency. At − 1.3 V vs . Ag/AgCl in a K 2 SO 4  + KNO 3 solution, the Mo-S-Fe 3 O 4 @FF electrode attained a NH 3 Faradaic efficiency of 91.3 %. Furthermore, performance was observed to improve with increasing solution pH levels as the reaction proceeded. From both kinetic and thermodynamic perspectives, our findings demonstrate that high NH 3 production activity is characteristic of Mo-S-Fe 3 O 4 @FF—indicating significant enhancements in conversion rates from NO 3 − →NO 2 − →NH 3 . Theoretical calculation, in conjunction with experimental analyses, reveal that the co-modification of Fe 3 O 4 with Mo and S enhances electron transfer capacity during NO 3 − RR. This modification forms Lewis-acid (Fe-Mo) pairs that increase nitrate adsorption energy alongside Lewis-base (S-O) sites that attract protons, thereby improving overall NO 3 − RR activity. This report elucidates the synergistic effects of Lewis-acid and Lewis-base sites on optimizing catalytic performance for NO 3 − RR using foam Fe-based electrodes.

Simultaneous enhancement of charge transfer and surface catalysis through a polymetallic oxide cocatalyst on BiVO4 photoanodes for highly efficient and stable water oxidation

Yuchen Zhou,Hongxing Li,Peng Guo,Yu Zhang,Peng Zhou

The rate-determining oxygen evolution reaction (OER) always limits the high-efficient conversion of solar energy to green hydrogen fuels through photoelectrocatalytic or photocatalytic water splitting. The high catalytic overpotential and the instability of catalytic center are commonly regarded as the primary factors contributing to the low rate of OER, remaining to be a challenge in the field of water splitting. Herein, a polymetallic oxide cocatalyst (Mo-MnO y /FeCoNiO x ) with well-defined electronic and catalytic properties is designed on BiVO 4 photoelectrode for highly efficient and stable photoelectrocatalytic water oxidation. The experimental characterization demonstrates that the dual-layer design of Mo-MnO y /FeCoNiO x can significantly optimizes the electronic property of MnO y and FeCoNiO x components, boosting the photogenerated charge transfer between Mo-MnO y /FeCoNiO x cocatalyst and BiVO 4 photoelectrode. The density functional theory (DFT) simulation reveals that the Mo sites in Mo-MnO y layer can activate the neighboring surface Mn sites instead of directly serving as the catalytic center, thereby establishing these Mn sites as primary active centers for achieving stable OER. The developed Mo-MnO y /FeCoNiO x /BiVO 4 photoelectrode exhibits a current density of 6.18 mA cm −2 with an excellent stability for 30 h at 1.23 V RHE under 1 sun irradiation, exhibiting the excellent activity and durability. This work sheds light on design of high-performance multiple-component water-oxidation cocatalyst on photoanode.

In-situ growth of Ni3S2@Mo2S3 catalyst on Mo-Ni foam for degradation of p-nitrophenol with a good synergetic effect by using ozone

Siyi Zhou,Fang Zhu,Hao Cheng,Sridhar Komarneni,Jianfeng Ma

In this study, Ni 3 S 2 @Mo 2 S 3 composites were grown on the surface of molybdenum-nickel (Mo-Ni) foam in situ by a one-step hydrothermal method . With p-nitrophenol (PNP) as the target pollutant, the catalyst can produce a good synergistic effect with ozone, and the degradation rate of PNP is more than 96%. Even after five cycles, Ni 3 S 2 @Mo 2 S 3 -NF/O 3 was able to degrade PNP efficiently and stably. In addition, the unique three-dimensional structure of Ni 3 S 2 @Mo 2 S 3 -NF solves the separation and recycling problem of traditional powder catalysts by maintaining the structural stability during the use process and thus, may reduce the cost of water treatment. The degradation process is mainly dominated by non-radical pathways, and the radical pathway, which work synergistically. This work reveals the influencing factors and degradation mechanism of Ni 3 S 2 @Mo 2 S 3 -NF/O 3 system for PNP degradation, which provides a new idea for water treatment and broadens its potential application.

Linking Mo/Fe ion conversion to green treatment of sulfonylurea pesticides in farmland drainage: Role of directed electron transfer and self-produced hydrogen peroxide

Bingkun Liu,Weijun Tian,Bingjie Huo,Xinbo Wang,Xinran Yu,Wei Bao,Ke Yang,Minghan Li,Yushan Wei,Yinming Ji,Daoqing Lin

Harmless Resource Utilization of Iron Sludge. • Green Water Restoration Technology. • A study of continuous flow applications in agricultural drainage systems. • Full-link environmental safety assessment of microorganisms, plants, and human cells. The generation of iron sludge remains a key bottleneck in Fenton wastewater treatment technology. This study proposes a waste-to-treasure strategy, utilizing a simple calcination-hydrothermal process to prepare the S-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst iron-sludge-derived oxide/MoS 2 composite (FMx). FMx exhibited excellent photo-self-Fenton activity in degrading refractory sulfonylurea herbicides. Kelvin probe force microscopy and density functional theory calculations provide evidence for the formation of an internal electric field, unequivocally confirming the S-scheme charge transfer pathway. This configuration, coupled with the Mo-O-Fe interface, coordinates efficient space charge separation and drives a sustainable Mo 4+ /Mo 6+ co-catalytic redox cycle, thus accelerating Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ conversion and in situ H 2 O 2 generation. Therefore, the reaction rate constant of the FM4 (4% iron-sludge-derived oxide) system is 74.6 times higher than that of pristine MoS 2 . To bridge the gap with practical applications, a continuous flow reactor was constructed, demonstrating strong remediation efficacy in real agricultural runoff. Furthermore, a comprehensive multi-trophic ecotoxicological assessment covering microbial communities, plants, and human cell lines validated the biosafety and ecological compatibility of treated wastewater. This work not only proposes a cost-effective solid waste recycling value-added scheme (< 0.5 RMB L −1 ) but also clarifies the mechanism for controlling advanced self-photo-self-Fenton systems.

Process optimization of Cu-Mo coatings via ultra-high-speed laser cladding and Box-Behnken design enhanced wear and corrosion resistance for marine applications

Wang Jiantao,Chen Hongxing,Zhang Conglin,Cao Jiangdong,Jiang Bochen,Guan Qingfeng

This study presents an innovative approach to overcome Cu-based materials’ inherent limitations (inadequate wear/corrosion resistance) and the alloying challenge of the immiscible Cu-Mo system. Using ultra-high-speed laser cladding, we fabricated Cu-Mo cladding layer with optimized parameters via Box-Behnken Design (BBD) response surface methodology, with three key variables: laser power (2500–4000 W), scanning speed (100–200 mm/s), and powder feeding rate (1.5–2.5 r/min). Comprehensive characterization techniques including X‑ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Energy‑dispersive X‑ray spectroscopy (EDS), microhardness testing, and electrochemical analysis, complemented by laser power single-factor experiments, elucidated the underlying mechanism of laser power-regulated Mo particle dissolution-dispersion and its correlation with the microstructure-performance of Cu-Mo cladding layer. Results showed scanning speed and powder feeding rate were predominant in controlling cladding thickness. At the optimal 3000 W, Mo particles uniformly dispersed in the Cu matrix, achieving 0.99% porosity, 71.0 HV microhardness, 1.451 × 10⁻⁵ mm³·N⁻¹·m⁻¹ wear rate, and superior corrosion resistance (7.36 µA/cm² in 3.5 wt% NaCl). The optimized parameters ( P  = 3000 W, V = 150 mm/s, F = 2 r/min) establish a technical foundation for immiscible alloy system surface strengthening.

Huizhen Wang,Pengfei Yang,Dongzheng Liu,Mengzhen Yu,Bowen Zhou,Yubing Zhang,Zhenyu Xiao,Weiping Xiao,Zexing Wu,Lei Wang

Developing efficient electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in full pH range can promote the practical applications of hydrogen energy. In this work, nitrogen doped carbon nanosheets supported RuM (Mo, W, Cr) (RuM/NCN) are prepared through an ultrafast microwave approach. The carbon nanosheet structure coupled with the ultrasmall RuM nanoparticles can expose rich active sites to optimize the catalytic activity. Moreover, the strong metal-support interactions also favor to accelerate the reactions kinetics and improve stability. Thus, the developed RuMo/NCN (RuW/NCN) show excellent HER catalytic activities with overpotentials of 72 (75) mV, 82 (82) mV and 124 (1   1   9) mV to reach current density of 10 mA cm -2 in 1 M KOH, 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 and alkaline seawater , respectively, and also achieve excellent performance in 1 M PBS. This work provides a valid and novel avenue to design efficient electrocatalysts in renewable energy-related fields.
