Real-time concentration prediction in column chromatography purification using NIR optical sensing and evolutionary attention-LSTM modeling

Dandan Zhai,Jinfeng Liu,Jingyun Liu,Mingxing Li,Anqi Liu,Yu Yang,Zhenwei Zhang,Na Liu,Ming Hui,Peng Li

Ginsenosides, the principal bioactive constituents of American ginseng ( Panax quinquefolius ), require precise monitoring during column chromatography to ensure product quality. Conventional assays are time-consuming and unsuited for real-time process control, particularly for low-abundance compounds. Here, we present a rapid, non-destructive near-infrared (NIR) optical sensing system coupled with an Evolutionary Attention–based Long Short-Term Memory (EA-LSTM) model to predict ginsenoside concentrations dynamically. The approach exploits the high-speed acquisition and reproducibility of NIR spectra while leveraging EA-LSTM's temporal feature extraction and adaptive attention to focus on chemically informative elution segments. Offline spectra from eight elution batches, referenced by UPLC, enabled model training and validation, with high-frequency sampling simulated to mimic industrial deployment. The system demonstrated high accuracy (R 2  = 0.9841, RPD = 7.94) and robustness under dynamic conditions (R 2  = 0.9694, RPD = 5.72, response time = 0.34 ms), highlighting its potential for real-time, non-destructive monitoring and intelligent control in natural product purification.

Bonding heterostructure mediated “photo-thermo-electric” implant: NIR-II photothermal and thermoelectric therapy for bone tumor defects

Zan Jun,Zhao Jiachi,Zeng Jie,Yang Qian,Ye Hengyun,Yang Youwen,Shuai Cijun

Recurrence of solid tumors after surgical resection is a major barrier to tissue regeneration. As an emerging treatment strategy, photo-thermo-electric therapy ablates tumor cells via photothermal effects and generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) via thermoelectric effects to disrupt heat shock proteins, thereby suppressing their protective function in tumor cells. However, conventional materials suffer from low thermoelectric efficiency and weak tissue penetration ability. In this study, we fabricated iodine-doped bismuth sulfide (I-Bi 2 S 3 ) nanorods with bonding heterostructures to improve thermoelectric performance. The approach employed iodine doping to introduce additional electrons, thereby regulating the band structure of Bi 2 S 3 and exploiting the dual low-energy vibration effect of the heterostructures to reduce thermal conductivity. More importantly, controlling the type of heterostructure modulated the bandgap width, thereby expanding the light absorption range to the higher-penetration near-infrared (NIR)-II region for deep tissue treatment. The I-Bi 2 S 3 nanorods were incorporated into poly- l -lactic acid (PLLA) scaffolds to confer antitumor functionality. According to the results, the bonding heterostructures enhanced the conductivity of Bi 2 S 3 and reduced its thermal conductivity, significantly enhancing thermoelectric efficacy. The heterostructures reduced the bandgap of Bi 2 S 3 from 1.23 to 0.88 eV, enabling optical absorption in the NIR-II region. The ROS tests showed that the PLLA/I-Bi 2 S 3 scaffold exhibited good photothermal effects and ROS generation under 1064-nm laser irradiation. The antitumor efficacy of the PLLA/I-Bi 2 S 3 scaffold reached 84.6% against MG-63 cells, demonstrating its exceptional potential in cancer treatment.

Tumor cell membrane modified clinical lCG nanoprobes for NIR fluorescence imaging of targeted triple negative breast cancer

Yuxiang Gao,Siyu Huang,Jiaxing Li,Lijun Zhu,Zhong Du,Jiabao Xiong,Nuernisha Alifu

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is one of the most aggressive breast cancer subtypes with high metastatic and recurrence rates. However there is still a lack of effective targeting nanoprobes (NPs) which is leading to suboptimal targeted therapy. Cell membrane-encapsulation methods are one of the ideal targeting strategy, which could enhance the biocompatibility through endogenous membrane components while enabling functional integration of targeting and imaging capabilities. In this study, fluorescent dye-clinical indocyanine green (ICG) was successfully encapsulated by TNBC cell membranes via dual biolayer method to form M-ICG NPs. The M-ICG NPs exhibited well cellular uptake for TNBC tumor cells via active targeting capability after homologous cancer cell membrane coating. Meanwhile, strong near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence signals were detected at the tumor sites from mice post-injection of M-ICG NPs at 24 h, indicating that their effective targeted tumor accumulation enables good tumor-specific labeling with strong NIR fluorescence emission. Furthermore, the M-ICG NPs retain the excellent optical and photothermal properties of ICG. Under 808 nm laser irradiation, via infrared imaging, the process of temperature monitoring up to 55°C within 12 min was recorded, exhibiting a strong photothermal effect, which lays a foundation for constructing a multifunctional nanoplatform with tumor-specific targeting, excellent biocompatibility and structural stability.

Unlocking Thermally Enhanced NIR-II Luminescence in Er3+ via Integer Phonon-Matching for High-Sensitivity Ratiometric Thermometry

Chenxi Xu,Kejie Li,Jiaqi Zhao,Dongxu Guo,Tianqi Sheng,Zuoling Fu

Luminescent thermometry in the second near-infrared (NIR-II) window holds significant promise for non-invasive. However, its practical application is severely hindered by thermal quenching at elevated temperatures, which limits the development of highly sensitive NIR-II thermometers capable of thermally enhanced emission. Here, we present a rationally designed integer phonon-matching strategy that enables NIR thermal enhancement specifically in singly Er 3+ -doped Ca 2 YNbO 6 double perovskite hosts. Through combined experimental investigations and rate equation modeling, we reveal that efficient multi-phonon relaxation (MPR) between the Er 3+ : 4 I 11/2 and 4 I 13/2 levels is activated when the electronic energy gap corresponds to an integer multiple ( n ≤ 5) of the dominant phonon energy. This resonant phonon-matching condition facilitates highly efficient MPR with increasing temperature, leading to a pronounced 1.66-fold enhancement in the Er 3+ NIR-II emission. Furthermore, we demonstrate the simultaneous occurrence of NIR thermal enhancement and ratiometric temperature sensing in Ca 2 YNbO 6 : Yb 3+ /Er 3+ /Ho 3+ /Pr 3+ crystals, achieving an exceptional relative sensitivity of 0.87% K −1 at 398 K. These findings not only circumvent the thermal quenching limitations of NIR-II phosphors but also establish phonon engineering as a versatile strategy for designing thermally enhanced luminescence, opening new avenues for flexible monitoring of pipeline integrity and organic compound leakage based on differential NIR-II luminescence absorption.

Visual–Tactile Perception Enabled by Artificial Synapses Based on NIR Triggered Persistent Luminescence From Lanthanide Doped SrAl2O4

Ni Zhang,Kun Lv,Yanjie Kong,Chuanwen Chen,Qi Sun,Senhao Li,Minjuan Liang,Ping Chen

Persistent luminescence from lanthanide ions provides unique opportunities for information storage, optical sensing, and bio-inspired computing owing to excellent characteristics such as photothermal stabilities, tunable emission wavelengths, and long afterglow times. However, these materials suffer from insufficient near-infrared (NIR) excitation and multimodal regulation for neuromorphic applications. In this study, we developed a composite strategy that enables NIR-triggered and thermally regulated long-persistent luminescence (LPL) by coupling SrAl 2 O 4 :Eu 2+ ,Dy 3+ with NaYF 4 :Yb 3+ ,Tm 3+ . NIR-triggered synapses were achieved through radiative reabsorption between upconversion emission from NaYF 4 :Yb 3+ ,Tm 3+ and the excited state of SrAl 2 O 4 :Eu 2+ ,Dy 3+ , with a high paired-pulse facilitation (PPF) of 211% recorded when excited with 980-nm light. At the same time, LPL is modulated by thermally activated dynamics that release defect-trapped electrons. Moreover, information encryption, handwritten digit recognition, and manipulator gesture control were achieved based on artificial synapses that exploit the synergy between optical and thermal stimuli, with a recognition accuracy of up to 91.12% recorded. Moreover, a visual–tactile bimodal synapse that mimics the physiological response associated with grabbing a hot cup was developed. These findings facilitate potential multimodal synapse applications based on LPL in neuromorphic photonics, intelligent perception, and human–machine interactions.

A novel high NIR-reflective cobalt- and nickel-free black pigment Na2Mn3O7: Synthesis, characterization, and chromaticity properties

Jian He,Xinyu Li,Bin Wang,Feng Jiang,Xuejiao Wang

Black pigments faced strict limits due to the heavy metal toxicity (Co, Ni), limited resources, and high costs. This study report for the first time the application of a new Co- and Ni-free Na 2 Mn 3 O 7 as a ceramic black pigment with high near-infrared (NIR) reflectance. XRD, FE-SEM, EDS-Mapping, UV-V is , TEM, and CIELAB colorimetry were used to study its properties. The FE-SEM results show the product has irregular flake-like particles, proving layered structure nature of Na 2 Mn 3 O 7 . The color values of the black pigment are L∗ = 17.27, a∗ = −0.05, and b∗ = −1.25. Remarkedly, its L∗ value is lower than that of commercial carbon black, and other currently reported black pigments. The chromatic mechanism originates from the combined effects of Mn 4+ d-d electronic transitions and Mn 4+ →O 2− charge transfer transitions, which together result in broad absorption across the visible region and a pure black color. The glaze shows a shiny black color when applied the pigment as ceramic glazes at 1200 °C in air, and the color values are L∗ = 25.31, a∗ = −2.56, and b∗ = 0.11. Notably, the glaze after high-temperature achieves a near-infrared reflectance of 36.2%, which is only slightly lower than the 45% reflectance of the commercial black near-infrared pigment (Black L 0095). This research provides useful guidance for developing black pigments without Co and Ni.

NIR-Triggered Photothermal Nanocomposite Hydrogels Integrating Polydopamine Carbon Dots and Dynamic Multi-Networks for Infected Wound Healing

Huanxuan Huang,Shiyang Liao,Dong Zhang,Hanwen Jiang,Qijia Liu,Keqing Xu,Yunlong Sun,Meidong Lang

Accelerating the regeneration of infected wounds necessitates a multifaceted therapeutic intervention that simultaneously eradicates bacterial pathogens, adapts seamlessly to dynamic tissue deformations, and provides uninterrupted barrier protection, ultimately fostering a pro-healing microenvironment. To address these requirements, a dynamic multi-network nanocomposite hydrogel (OG/PCDs) was developed that couples on-demand photothermal therapy with orchestrated tissue remodeling. Specifically, polydopamine carbon dots (PDA-CDs) with exceptional near-infrared (NIR) photothermal conversion efficiency were initially synthesized as broad-spectrum antimicrobial agents. By combining intrinsic physical membrane disruption with NIR-triggered photothermal ablation, the PDA-CDs exhibit potent antibacterial activity while effectively mitigating the risk of bacterial resistance development. Subsequently, the OG/PCDs hydrogel was rationally engineered via the integration of dynamic Schiff base linkages, boronate ester bonds, and UV-triggered free-radical polymerization. Benefiting from its sophisticated architecture, the resulting hydrogel exhibited rapid autonomous self-healing capabilities, reliable tissue adhesion, and an intelligent pH-responsive release profile tailored for acidic infective microenvironments. Crucially, the hydrogel inherits the superior photothermal performance of PDA-CDs, enabling the efficient elimination of both planktonic bacteria and resilient biofilms. In vivo evaluations using an S. aureus-infected wound model demonstrated that the NIR-activated OG/PCDs hydrogel effectively sterilized the wound bed (>99% bacterial eradication) and significantly accelerated tissue remodeling, culminating in an impressive 98.42% wound closure rate over 14 days. Overall, by synergizing targeted photothermal antimicrobial efficacy with dynamic structural adaptability, the nanocomposite hydrogel presents a promising therapeutic platform to combat bacterial infections and facilitate tissue regeneration.

Pixel-Level X-Ray to NIR Image Fusion Based on Lead-Free Halide Perovskite for Biological Imaging

Wei Tian,Hairui Zhang,Xinyi Qian,Zhenyu Ji,Fei Wang,Zhentao Du,Xue Zhao,Bingsuo Zou,Hui Peng

Combining information from different images for multispectral image fusion can enhance human or machine perception. Nowadays, various luminescent materials with different spectral responses are used for image fusion, but this requires complex algorithms and systems to address pixel and position mismatches. Using a single luminescent material to obtain multispectral imaging can effectively avoid pixel mismatch and complex imaging processing. Herein, we report efficient blue-light-excitable ultrabroadband white emission and near-infrared (NIR) emission in the Te 4+ /Mo 4+ -codoped Cs 2 ZrCl 6 with a luminous efficiency of 94.2% (NIR region: 52.6%). Moreover, this compound also shows bright radioluminescence with a light yield of 55 000 photons/MeV in the visible light region. Benefiting from these fascinating optical properties, high-performance single-component white light-emitting diode (WLED), NIR LED, and X-ray scintillator were fabricated based on Te 4+ /Mo 4+ -codoped Cs 2 ZrCl 6 /polydimethylsiloxane flexible film. Particularly, we took bullfrog palm as the target object, and demonstrated its applications in white light imaging, NIR imaging, and X-ray imaging, respectively. Without pixel mismatch and complicated imaging processing, the pixel-level X-ray to NIR image fusion was realized, which can not only observe the wound of bullfrog palm, but also clearly obtain the structure and distribution of blood vessels and skeleton textures under the skin tissue of bullfrog palm.

Chenyang Chu,Zhong Du,Jing Wang,Maierhaba Aili,Jiaxing Li,Jiabao Xiong,Rong Ma,Cailing Ma,Nuernisha Alifu

Purpose Cervical cancer (CC) is still the fourth most common cause of cancer deaths in women. However, current biomedical imaging techniques exhibit inherent limitations in the diagnosis and treatment of CC. This study aims to develop a biomimetic nanoplatform based on tumor cell membranes, loaded with a palladium (Pd)-based computed tomography (CT) contrast agent and the near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent probe indocyanine green (ICG). This multifunctional nanoplatform is designed to integrate multimodal imaging with photothermal therapy (PTT), thereby improving the diagnostic accuracy and therapeutic efficacy against CC.Methods In this study, biomimetic nanoparticles (NPs), designated as M@Pd-ICG NPs, were synthesized by encapsulating Pd and ICG within HeLa cell membranes derived from cell-derived xenograft (CDX) models. Subsequently, the toxicity, biocompatibility, and tumor suppression capability of the M@Pd-ICG NPs were evaluated in vitro. In vivo, the multimodal imaging performance of the M@Pd-ICG NPs and their photothermal therapeutic efficacy under 808-nm laser irradiation were investigated in mouse model bearing subcutaneous cervical tumor. Results The M@Pd-ICG NPs were successfully prepared and exhibited favorable stability, excellent photothermal conversion efficiency (34.04%), and good biocompatibility, enabling homologous targeting and prolonged circulation time. The M@Pd-ICG NPs integrated the complementary advantages of NIR-II fluorescence imaging (900–1700 nm, NIR-II FI), photothermal imaging (PTI), and CT imaging. Both in vitro and in vivo studies demonstrated that, under 808-nm laser irradiation, M@Pd-ICG NPs induced significant photothermal effects and tumor ablation. Conclusion M@Pd-ICG NPs successfully integrate multimodal imaging and PTT, owing to their excellent targeting capability and good biocompatibility, demonstrating potential for further biomedical applications.

Energy transfer in a self-activated host Ca2MgWO6: Enabling sensitizer-mediated NIR-II thermometry and multimode encryption

Jilong Kang,Zhiying Wang,Jinhua Li,Zuoling Fu

Rare-earth-doped luminescent materials have attracted extensive attention owing to their unique 4 f electronic configuration and optical properties. However, the research has largely remained confined to single application domains, and developing multifunctional luminescent systems and elucidating energy transfer mechanisms are essential for broadening their applicability. Herein, we select the double perovskite tungstate Ca 2 MgWO 6 as a host material, leveraging the intrinsic W-O charge transfer band to achieve efficient self-activated blue emission. The W-O charge transfer band further serves as an efficient energy transfer channel to activate the luminescence of lanthanide-based trivalent cations (Ln 3 + ), overcoming the limitation posed by mismatched excited-state energy levels among different Ln 3+ ions (i.e., Er 3+ , Ho 3+ , and Tm 3+ ). By introducing Yb 3+ as an energy sensitizer, the fluorescence intensity of Ln 3+ in visible and near-infrared regions under 980 nm excitation is significantly enhanced. Switching the excitation wavelength enables tunable photoluminescence signals, which leverage to design multimodal decodable anti-counterfeiting labels and information storage systems. Moreover, a sensitizer-mediated NIR-II ratiometric optical thermometer is constructed by means of phonon-assisted energy transfer, exhibiting a relative sensitivity of 0.52% K −1 . This work demonstrates a strategy for designing next-generation, high-performance lanthanide luminescent materials that can be employed in various sensing and photonics applications.

Morphology-Engineered Gold Nanostars for Activatable NIR-II Imaging of Intracellular miR-21 with Deep Tissue Capability

Zhang Lei,Liao Yuqin,Zhu Lvyun,Li Yingying,Yu Lilei,Yang Yanbing,Yuan Quan

Near-infrared II (NIR-II, 1000–1700 nm) fluorescence imaging enables deep-tissue analysis, but conventional “always-on” probes suffer from high background that compromises the signal-to-background ratio for low-abundance targets. Activatable probe strategies could mitigate this issue, yet most existing designs rely on fluorescence resonance energy transfer with acceptors confined to the visible region, hampering efficient signal quenching in the NIR-II window. Here, we present a generalizable strategy based on morphology-engineered nanometal surface energy transfer (NSET) to construct a NIR-II core–satellite nanoprobe for intracellular miR-21 detection. By systematically tuning the branch aspect ratio of gold nanostars (AuNSs), their localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) absorption can be red-shifted to achieve precise spectral overlap with the NIR-II emission of Ag 2 S quantum dots. Guided by DNA self-assembly, an AuNS@Ag 2 S core–satellite structure with controllable interparticle spacing is established, enabling an initial fluorescence quenching efficiency of up to 88%. Upon target recognition, miR-21-triggered strand displacement reaction induces the dissociation of Ag 2 S quantum dots from the AuNS surface, resulting in a pronounced NIR-II fluorescence “turn-on” response. The nanoprobe exhibits exceptional performance, including a low detection limit of 75.8 pM, robust linearity, single-base mismatch discrimination capability, and enables visualization of differential miR-21 expression in living cells. Notably, high-contrast NIR-II signals are retained at penetration depths of up to 15 mm in tissue-mimicking experiments. This work establishes an NSET-based analytical platform through precise spectral matching and rational structural engineering, providing a robust strategy for high signal-to-background biosensing and in situ analysis of low-abundance miR-21 in deep tissues.

Broadband NIR-II luminescence from Cr3+/Ni2+ co-doped Lu3Ga5O12 for non-destructive plastic identification and sorting

Qi Chen,Rongyi Kuang,Yinyue Cao,Zezhong Yang,Siran Tao,Binchang Wu,Lin Huang,Bo-Mei Liu,Jing Wang

The second near-infrared window (NIR-II, 1000-1700 nm) phosphor-converted LEDs (pc-LEDs) show great potential for portable spectroscopic detection. However, high-performance long-wavelength (>1350 nm) NIR-II phosphors that combine broadband emission, high thermal stability, and efficient blue-light excitation, are still relatively scarce. Herein, a Lu 3 Ga 5 O 12 :Cr 3+ ,Ni 2+ phosphor was developed via a Cr 3+ sensitization strategy. Cr 3+ and Ni 2+ stably occupy the [GaO 6 ] octahedral sites, enabling efficient energy-transfer from Cr 3+ to Ni 2+ . The optimal sample exhibits broadband NIR-II emission at 1427 nm with an FWHM of 277 nm, an EQE of 23.1%, and excellent thermal stability (I 373K /I 293K  = 81.5%). The pc-LED based on this NIR-II phosphor achieves penetration imaging and non-destructive identification of daily necessities. More notably, rapid spectral differentiation of common plastics (PA, PE, PP, PVC and PET) was successfully realized using the NIR-II luminescence of the as-prepared phosphor. This work provides guidance for constructing high-performance NIR-II phosphors and promotes the practical deployment of NIR spectroscopy in resource recycling.
