In order to investigate the effects of MOFs by altering ligands with various functional groups on separation selection in pervaporation dehydration, three hydrophilic UiO-66-X nanoparticles were respectively synthesized and blended into poly (vinyl alcohol) matrix to fabricate water-selective membrane for ethanol dehydration via PV technology. Both the experimental and molecular simulation results confirmed the UiO-66-X counterbalancing factors of enhanced polarity and suitable pore size gave rise to the optimal performance in ethanol dehydration. The PV performances could be tuned by the type and quantity of functional groups carried by UiO-66-X nanoparticles. As a result, the pore aperture of UiO-66-(COOH) 2 nanoparticles provided continuous channel for water diffusion, and water molecules could also be activated attributed to the strong interaction between the UiO-66-(COOH) 2 nanoparticles and water molecules which enhanced the penetration and diffusion of water molecular in hybrid membrane to increase the water flux. The optimized hybrid membranes with UiO-66-(COOH) 2 loading of 8 wt% exhibited the total flux of 979 ± 7 g/(m 2 ·h) and a separation factor of 2084 ± 21.

Ionogels combine the virtues of polymers and ionic liquids (ILs) and have greater potential for supercapacitors (SCs) than hydrogels and organic gels. Undoubtedly, the self-healing ability of ionogels dramatically improves the reliability of related SCs. Herein, we reported a dynamic diol-borate ester-cross-linked polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) ionogel electrolyte for smart double-layer capacitors. The results indicated that 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (EmimCl) could form a strong interaction with the hydroxy groups on PVA, thereby depressing the crystallization efficiently. The resultant ionogel exhibited an amorphous nature with excellent ionic conductivity up to 2.43 × 10–3 S/cm, high flexibility, and 95% healing efficiency when the IL content was 90 vol %. It could be inferred from the fact that EmimCl acted not only as an ion provider to improve the ionic conductivity but also as a plasticizer to enhance the chain mobility and self-healing efficiency. Based on the unique properties of PVA-boric acid/EmimCl ionogels, a flexible and self-healable SC was assembled. The as-prepared SC delivered a specific capacitance of 90 F/g at 0.1 A/g and retained 98% capacitance after 3000 charge–discharge cycles at a current density of 2 A/g. More interestingly, it could tolerate physical bending and healing without significant performance deterioration. The present study provides a novel strategy to prepare self-healable ionogel electrolytes that can be applied to smart energy storage devices.

In this work, water-resistant poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/poly (acrylic acid) (PAA) electrospun fibers encapsulating tangeretin (Tan) were fabricated by emulsion-electrospinning. To optimize the electrospinning condition, the size and morphology of electrospun fibers were characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS), optical light microscope, fluorescence microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. The optimized initial concentration of PVA/PAA was 10% (w/w) with a mass ratio of 3:7. The time and temperature of optimized thermal crosslinking treatment were 2 h and 145 °C, respectively. The results of XRD and SEM showed that the Tan was successfully incorporated into smooth PVA/PAA electrospun fibers and those fibers possessed nano-diameter size and high porosity. The encapsulation of Tan had no significant impact on the antioxidant activity of PVA/PAA/Tan crosslinking electrospun fibers. The in vitro release test showed the PVA/PAA/Tan crosslinking electrospun fibers achieved durable release profiles and lower burst release rates than that from the pure Tan emulsion. Based on these results, it is concluded that PVA/PAA/Tan crosslinking electrospun fibers prepared by emulsion-electrospinning serve as a promising technique in the fields of water-insoluble drug delivery and slow-release.

The numerous advantages of hydrogel make it possible to apply as dressing. However, it is challenging in designing hydrogels with desired antibacterial activity and enhanced mechanical properties at the same time. Herein, a graphene oxide/rose bengal/polyvinyl alcohol hybrid hydrogel (β-GO/RB/PVA HD) is prepared by freezing and thawing a mixed polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) solution of rose bengal (RB) immobilized with chitosan microspheres (CM) and a modified graphene oxide network (β-GO). The mechanical properties and light-triggered antibacterial activity of hydrogel are systematically evaluated. The β-GO inorganic network interpenetrate into the PVA porous structure, which significantly improves the mechanical properties of hydrogel. The hyperthermia generated by β-GO under 808 nm light irradiation combined with reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced by RB under 550 nm light irradiation give rise to excellent antibacterial activity requiring irradiation for only 10 min as demonstrated by our experiments conducted in vitro and in vivo . Meanwhile, β-GO/RB/PVA HD exhibits outstanding biocompatibility and water-absorbing capacity. More importantly, the hybrid hydrogel can significantly accelerate bacteria-accompanied wound healing. The results demonstrated that the hybrid hydrogel could be a promising wound dressing for preventing bacterial infection.

Superhydrophobic surfaces with long-lasting stability through simple fabrication procedures have attracted considerable attention. The application of existing superhydrophobic surfaces is limited, considering the use of toxic ingredients and their poor longevity. Herein, we report the novel fabrication of durable, fluorine-free, and self-healing superhydrophobic cotton textiles by utilising boric acid (H 3 BO 3 ) as a cross-linker to silica nanoparticles and poly (vinyl alcohol) followed by polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) modification through a simple dip-dry coating technique. Boric acid possessed a noticeable micro/nanoporous structure with silica and poly (vinyl alcohol) via cross-linking on the surface, which showed excellent superhydrophobicity, and PDMS modification on the textile surface created a lower surface energy than unmodified textile. The fabricated surface exhibited a maximum water-contact angle of 156.84°±1.5° with a small rolling angle of 1.8°±0.3°, presenting outstanding superhydrophobicity for cotton textiles. The modified cotton textile surface had excellent durability against mechanical and chemical disturbances. The experimental findings indicated that the fabricated textile had adequate mechanical strength that could withstand sandpaper abrasion for 120 cycles, tape-peeling repetition 60 times, knife scratching for 20 cycles and washing by surfactant solutions for 80 cycles. Additionally, the modified textiles exhibited oil–water separation and self-healing abilities, therefore showing multifunctional properties that have potential in a wide range of cotton textile surface treatments.

In recent years, antibiotics (such as levofloxacin (LEV)) have been detected widely in the environment. Semiconductor photocatalysis has been recognized as a promising technology for removing pollutants in the environment. In this work, nitrogen and carbon codoped titanium dioxide nano-catalyst (NCD-TiO2) was immobilized in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix to form PVA/NCD-TiO2films through solution casting and thermal treatment, which exhibited good photocatalytic efficiency for LEV degradation. The results showed that about 42% LEV can be degraded after 2 h in the presence of PVA/NCD-TiO2nanocomposite film (the weight ratio of NCD-TiO2to PVA is 8% and thermal treatment is 120 °C) under visible light. Moreover, possible pathways of photocatalytic degradation of LEV according to the detected intermediates are proposed, which provide insight into the degradation mechanism of LEV by using PVA/NCD-TiO2photocatalytic films. Finally, the synthesized PVA/NCD-TiO2films exhibited excellent reusability and stability in photocatalysis. This work provides fundamental support for the design of a high-stability, excellent photocatalyst for practical application. Keywords:levofloxacin;polyvinyl alcohol;visible-light photocatalysis;titanium dioxide;water treatment

High-precision detection of ultraviolet and blue light intensity remains a major challenge in monitoring fields such as industrial, medical, and laboratory applications. This paper proposes a strategy to enhance the sensing performance of FPI cavity using a ZnO/PVA composite material. Leveraging the photo-generated carrier effect of ZnO, the refractive index within the cavity is directly modulated, yielding high-sensitivity wavelength modulation for both UV and blue light. Experimental results show that the FPI 1 cavity with ZnO/PVA composite material achieves a UV sensitivity of 0.273 nm/(mW·cm −2 ) and a blue sensitivity of 0.267 nm/(mW·cm −2 ). Furthermore, a dual-cavity structure (S 1 ) based on the Vernier effect, formed by connecting FPI 1 and FPI 2 in parallel, demonstrates significantly enhanced sensitivities of −2.140 nm/(mW·cm −2 ) for UV light and −2.392 nm/(mW·cm −2 ) for blue light. In addition, the proposed sensing element features facile fabrication, excellent stability, and a relatively simple fiber-optic configuration. This work provides a high-performance fiber-optic approach for UV and blue-light intensity detection, with a low-cost and convenient sensing-element fabrication process.

PANAM loaded with ZIF-8 and CV was successfully synthesized. • PANAM@ZIF-8@CV were mixed with crosslinked PVA to prepare the composite pad. • The triple synergistic effect realized long-term sustained release of CV. • PANAM@ZIF-8@CV/PVA presented excellent antioxidant and antibacterial properties. • The PANAM@ZIF-8@CV/PVA composite can realize the long-term blueberry preservation. To achieve long-term sustained release of active antibacterial substances and prolong food shelf life, polyacrylonitrile microspheres (PANAM) loaded with ZIF-8 and carvacrol (CV) were fabricated and then blended with crosslinked PVA matrix to prepare a composite pad (PANAM@ZIF-8@CV/PVA). SEM, XPS and XRD results showed ZIF-8 and CV were successfully immobilized in PANAM's porous structure, which effectively enriched active sites and realized efficient anchoring of CV. The triple synergy of ZIF-8, PANAM and polymer matrix enables long-term CV release. Compared with other PVA composite pads containing the same CV content, PANAM@ZIF-8@CV/PVA presented a superior long-term slow-release effect and thus exhibited excellent antioxidant and long-lasting antibacterial properties after 30 days of storage. During 15-day blueberry storage, this composite pad reduced respiratory intensity and weight loss while preserving firmness and nutrients. Thus, blueberries retained intact morphology and fresh taste, demonstrating great potential of PANAM@ZIF-8@CV/PVA in long-term blueberry preservation. The rapid development of the times has aroused the concern for the full usage of renewable resources and the sustainable development of the environment. Meanwhile, complex social activities have also put forward many requirements for sensor industry. Traditional hydrogel sensors are easy to lose water in daily environment and freeze at low temperatures, as well as being attacked by bacterial during repeated use, thus affecting the service life of the device, which are all problems to be solved by hydrogel flexible equipment. These urgent problems are crucial to the development of hydrogel flexible devices. In this work, starch/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is used as dual-network hydrogel substrate due to the advantages of renewable and biocompatibility. The internal compatibility of starch/PVA hydrogel is greatly improved by regulating the ratio of ionic liquid/ethylene glycol/water ternary solvent system. Multiple hydrogen bonding endows starch/ionic liquid/PVA ionic conductive hydrogel with high mechanical properties (tensile strain, modules and toughness of 1250.29 %, 1324.43 kPa, 9008.88 kJ m −3 , respectively), and excellent anti-freezing (-128.9℃), anti-bacterial and electrical conductivity. The assembled hydrogel sensor could effectively detect external stimulations such as strain/pressure. It also has high sensitivity characteristics over an ultra-wide strain range (GF = 0.99 below 55 %, 2.19 at 55 %–250 %, 2.49 at 250 %–650 %, and 3.28 at 650 %–1000 %), as well as stably recognize human movements and physiological signals. All in all, this work brings new inspiration for low-cost, environmentally adaptable, sustainable wearable flexible devices.

The development of the form-stable Phase Change Materials (FPCMs) with excellent solar-thermal conversion performance is crucial for sustainable solar energy utilization. However, the leakage of organic phase change materials limits its practical application. Herein, we reported a novel multistage porous aerogel fabricated from black phosphorus (BP) nanosheets , polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and carbonized kapok (CK) fibers by a solution blending method. The aerogel was directly dipped in molten hexadecanol as the phase change material. The results showed that the HD/PVA-BP30 had a phase change temperature of 55 °C, latent heat of phase change of 164.3 kJ/kg. After 100 melting/freezing cycle, the phase change composite leaks only 0.38 %. The mechanical properties of PVA-BP30 exhibited a compressive strength of 1.04 MPa at 80 % strain, and the mechanical strength of the aerogel increased with increasing BP content . The addition of BP also enhanced the photothermal conversion (73.6 %) under 1 sun illumination . The prepared HD/PVA-BP30 have the characteristics of the suitable phase change temperature, excellent melting/freezing cycle reliability, strong mechanical properties, and anti-leakage properties. Therefore, the reported FPCMs are anticipated to have great potential for solar water heater utilization in bath water.

Zn-powder based anodes are considered as candidates for Zn-based batteries in practical industrial applications in terms of cost, large-scale processing, versatility and tunability. However, Zn-P-based anodes suffer from even more severe side effects including corrosion, passivation, and uncontrolled dendrite growth. Herein, we successfully fabricated nitrogen-doped carbon coating layer on Zn particles (Zn-NC) as anode material for more homogeneous Zn deposition by inducing more zincophilic site on N-doped carbon layers and enhanced electrical connection with carbon networks on Zn-NC particle surface. Nevertheless, metallic Zn deposited on Zn-NC surface still suffers from unavoidable side effects with continuous cycling, even though the dendrite growth was suppressed. It is worth mentioned that PVA-gel electrolyte greatly improves the cycling performance of Zn-NC with limited water content, which can alleviate side reactions. Experiments and simulations address the importance of NC layers with higher electricity, chemical stability, and zincophilic property, as well as the role that PVA-gel electrolyte plays for the further improved cycling performance. Zn-NC with PVA-gel electrolyte achieves ultra-long cycling hours with over 3500 h at 1 mA cm −2 and 850 h at 5 mA cm −2 in symmetrical cells. This study provides a promising pathway and in-depth mechanistic analysis for Zn-powder based anode in versatile applications especially for flexible energy-storage devices.
