Adsorption techniques are crucial for removing high and trace levels of heavy metal pollutants from water, enabling effective pollution control without causing secondary contamination. Achieving “all-rounder” adsorbents with high capacity, efficiency, speed, and cost-effectiveness is challenging. Materials with structural defects, firm surface charges, and porous structures are ideal for rapid and efficient mass transfer. Herein, using a “homologous transformation” strategy, we converted abundant kaolin into 4A and Na-P1 zeolites-based porous silicate adsorbents with enhanced surface active sites and optimized adsorption pathways. Site energy analysis confirmed that these upgraded structures have high-density, high-energy adsorption sites, facilitating rapid Pb(II) removal from water. These zeolite-based adsorbents exhibit exceptional Pb(II) adsorption capacities (416.60 mg/g for 4A and 400.21 mg/g for Na-P1) and ultra-fast initial rate constants (409.84 and 617.28, which are 174.62 and 263.01 times greater than those of kaolinite; and 56.56 and 85.19 times greater than those of commercial activated carbon, respectively). DFT calculations verified strong adsorption forces for Pb(II) (adsorption energy: −0.52 eV). Removal efficiencies reached 99.75 % for 4A and 99.96 % for Na-P1 zeolite-based adsorbents, ensuring treated water is safe and supports seed germination and plant root growth. These adsorbents also perform well in the presence of interfering ions like Zn(II), Cu(II), Cd(II), and Ni(II). After 10 regeneration cycles, they retain over 73 % of their original capacity, demonstrating an optimal balance among capacity, speed, efficiency, and interference resistance, aligning with sustainable development principles of “from nature, for nature”.

Perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) are widely used in the backlight field of liquid crystal displays (LCDs) due to their narrow-band emission and high color purity. However, their high cost and insufficient stability seriously restrict the industrialization process. This study innovatively adopted the environmentally friendly Pb(OH)2 to replace the traditional PbBr2 lead source, successfully reducing the raw material cost by nearly 50%. At the same time, it significantly improved the optical performance of CsPbBr3@glass by reducing the formation of bromine vacancies. By further introducing La3+, the prepared La3+@CsPbBr3@glass achieved a PLQY increase from 48 to 86%, and maintained a PL intensity of 87% under harsh conditions (60 °C, 90% RH, and continuous exposure to 8000 nit blue light for 40 days), breaking through the stability bottleneck. The color gamut of the CsPbBr3&CsPbBr1I2@glass@PET light conversion film developed on this basis is 94.75% of the NTSC 1953 standard and 70.74% of the Rec.2020 standard. When they are applied to LCD screens, they significantly enhance color performance. It provides an efficient, stable, and low-cost industrial solution for quantum dot film technology.

Antimony (Sb) is a critical strategic resource valued for its scarcity and wide-ranging industrial applications. However, the separation of lead (Pb) and Sb remains challenging due to their similar physicochemical properties. High Sb–Pb alloys (comprising 1–10 wt % Pb) often form as intermediate products during the pyrometallurgical processing of jamesonite (Pb4FeSb6S14). Consequently, the development of effective methods for separating Pb and Sb represents a key research priority in metallurgy. This paper proposes a one-step electrolysis method to separate Sb powders from a high Pb–Sb alloy using a choline chloride-ethylene glycol + SbCl3 deep eutectic solvent (ethaline + SbCl3 DES) electrolyte. The difference in anode dissolution and cathode deposition of Pb and Sb is systematically investigated through the polarization curve and cyclic voltammetry. The results show that the oxidation potential of Sb is more positive than that of Pb in the ethaline + SbCl3 DES, which implies Sb and Pb can be separated by electrochemistry. Moreover, across all tested temperatures, the initial reduction potential of Sb remains more positive than that of Pb, indicating the preferential reduction of Sb over Pb. Mechanism analysis reveals that the introduction of SbCl3 inhibit the pb dissolution at the anode, leading to the accumulation of Pb as anode sludge. When Sb dissolves in the DES, it primarily forms [SbCl6]3– complexes, which are directly reduced to metallic Sb at the Ti cathode. Under optimized conditions, Sb with a purity of 99.98% is obtained, accompanied by a current efficiency of 93.57% and an energy consumption of 749.18 kW·h·t–1. This study aims to provide an environmentally sustainable and straightforward approach for the separation and refinement of Sb from a high Pb–Sb alloy.

The extensive utilization of thermoelectric (TE) conversion technology necessitates stricter performance requirements for bismuth telluride (Bi 2 Te 3 )-based commercial materials. Despite the numerous optimization methods available for Bi 2 Te 3 -based materials, each optimization method has a certain upper limitation, and combining multiple strategies can achieve the optimal thermoelectric figure of merit ( zT ). In this study, the thermoelectric properties of (Bi,Sb) 2 Te 3 materials are enhanced through the combined use of the heavy element Pb to regulate carrier concentration and the In element to optimize the band structure. Notably, indium (In) can suppress p-type antisite defects, which generate abundant Te vacancies, and help regulate the carrier concentration to its optimal level. This co-doping strategy achieves optimal carrier concentration, thereby enhancing the power factor (PF=4.57×10 3 μW⸱m –1 ⸱K –2 ), and generating abundant dislocations, the presence of the rich nano-second phase Sb 2 O 3 contributes to reduced lattice thermal conductivity. Consequently, a peak zT value of 1.41 at 323 K and a high average zT value of 1.23 between 300 K and 500 K are achieved. Additionally, two pairs of thermoelectric modules, composed of p-type (Bi 0.42 Sb 1.58 ) 0.994 (In, Pb) 0.006 Te 3 and zone-melted n-type Bi 2 Te 2.7 Se 0.3 , demonstrate a conversion efficiency of 7.3% at a temperature difference of 250 K. This underscores the promising potential of these thermoelectric modules in commercialization. Thus, this study demonstrates the feasibility of combining multiple strategies and is expected to provide a potential reference for other thermoelectric systems.

Development of new birefringent crystals with enhanced properties remains an ongoing research priority. Through the exploration of guanidinium-containing oxalates with the structural modulation of Pb 2+ and Cl - , a new birefringent crystal, [C(NH 2 ) 3 ]Pb(C 2 O 4 )Cl·H 2 O (GPCCH), was successfully obtained. GPCCH was characterized by two types of π-conjugated building units, which contributes to the coexistence of a wide bandgap of 3.98 eV and a large birefringence of 0.24@546 nm. These findings highlight the synergistic role of π-conjugated building units and partially-chlorinated lead-containing units played in generating fascinating UV birefringent crystals.

A conceptually new class of DNA logic gates for Hg 2+ and Pb 2+ ion simultaneous detection has been constructed based on the activity of DNAzyme dependent on metal ions . For sensitive and specific detection of Hg 2+ and Pb 2+ ions, we demonstrate a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-active platform by employing the oligonucleotide-functionalized and gold coated polystyrene microspheres (PSMPs). In this work, Hg 2+ and Pb 2+ were used as the input, and the SERS signals were the output. Hg 2+ ions were captured by a mismatched T-Hg-T bridge. Pb 2+ ions were bound to 8–17DNAzyme to break the cleavage substrate. The limit of detection (LOD) of Hg 2+ is 0.1 nmol L −1 and Pb 2+ is 1.0 nmol L −1 , which is far below the limit of 10.0 ppb (31 nmol L −1 ) and 10.0 ppm (3.02 × 10 4 nmol L −1 ) for drinking water stipulated by the World Health Organization. Additionally, this system has the potential to be ideal candidates for intelligent DNA calculator design applications. Furthermore, the designed strategy could be extended to other multiplex metal ions that can be combined with DNA molecules, and can be applied to many other fields such as environmental detection, toxin detection and liquid analysis.

Surface modifications of lead halide perovskite quantum dots (QDs) are promising for perusing improved stability and regulated optical properties . We have successfully introduced 1-alkyl-3-methyl-imidazolium cations, a kind of ionic liquids with conjugated aromatic head groups, as proper surface ligands via ligands exchange (LE) method. After surface modification, it is found that there is approximately 10 cm −1 chemical shift of the infrared (IR) absorption peak for the ligand compared to its derived raw imidazolium salts, suggesting that there is interaction between the imidazolium cations and the QDs. The theoretical simulations on structure optimization and frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs) prove that the interaction is enabled by a preferred N-Pb bonding on the surface and a close matching in energy levels of the ligands and CsPbBr 3 . X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results show a significant decrease in ligand density as well as a better passivation of surface Pb 2+ defects. The modified QDs show better stabilities for their solution can survive after 72 h duration of intensive light illumination whilst obvious aggregation and degradation is found after only 24 h for the parent QDs solution. Accordingly, the modified QDs present better performance as phosphor in the white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) device. The research gives an insight into the surface engineering of QDs with conjugated head groups, and suggests the potential application of the modified QDs as inks in flexible devices and phosphors in WLEDs.

New luminescent Pb(II)-coordination polymers (Pb(II)-CPs), [Pb(2-anc)2]n (1) and [Pb(3-qlc)2(H2O)2]n (2) (2-anc = 2-aminonicotinate, 3-qlc = 3-quinolinecarboxylate), were synthesized by a solvothermal reaction and characterized using microanalysis, IR spectrometry and thermogravimetric analysis. Single crystal structure analysis revealed that the Pb2+ ion displays a hemi-directed coordination geometry in 1 and a holo-directed coordination geometry in 2. The difference between the coordination spheres of 1 and 2 is related to the steric hindrance effect of the ligands. A two-dimensional (2D) corrugated layer structure is formed in 1, and the neighboring layers are further extended into a three-dimensional (3D) van der Waals crystal by π⋯π interactions between the pyridyl rings in the neighboring layers. In contrast, a one-dimensional (1D) coordination polymeric chain is formed in 2, and the adjacent chains are connected in a 2D network by hydrogen bonds. The photophysical properties of 1 and 2 were studied at ambient conditions, disclosing that 1 emits phosphorescence at 548 nm with a millisecond-scale emission lifetime and an absolute quantum yield of 2.2%; 2 emits only blue fluorescence with an absolute quantum yield of 3.5% and nanosecond-scale emission lifetime. The reasons for the difference in the photophysical nature of 1 and 2 are discussed in regards to the electron band structure and density of states analysis.

A series of sodium alginate (SA) grafted polymer composite beads were synthesized by a solution free-radical graft polymerization reaction performed in a surface crosslinked alginate bead reactor. The outer surface of the precursor droplet containing reactants including SA, acrylamide (AM), N,N′ -methylene- bis -acrylamide (MBA), ammonium persulfate (APS), sepiolite (SP) and gelatin (GE) was instantly crosslinked with Ca 2+ ions to form a capsule-like bead when it was dropped into aqueous solution of calcium chloride , and simultaneously the reactants inside the capsule-like “bead reactor” were polymerized in-situ to form new composite beads with crosslinked network structure, abundant functional groups, excellent single or co-adsorption ability and easily separable advantages. The optimal composite bead shows high adsorption capacities of 390.78, 1425.65 and 533.91 mg/g toward Methylene Blue (MB), Basic Fuchsin (BF) and Pb(II), respectively. After adsorption with the composite bead, 99.71% of MB, 99.99% of BF and 99.97% of Pb(II) were removed from original dye or Pb(II) solutions. Moreover, above 99.22% of BF and 95.33% of Pb(II) was co-removed from their binary mixture (BF concentration, 100 mg/L; Pb(II) concentration, 50 mg/L). This paper provides a simple green way to synthesize efficient and recyclable biopolymer-based adsorbents capable of purifying dyes and heavy metal ions in water.

The simultaneous realization of high adsorption efficiency, low cost, and scalable fabrication in a single adsorbent remains a significant challenge for the remediation of heavy metals-contaminated water. Here we propose a thermal-induced structural reorganization strategy to convert naturally abundant low-grade attapulgite clay into a porous silicate composite (denoted HJSiCa1.75). The composite exhibits a high uptake capacity (139.39 mg·g −1 ) and removal efficiency over 99.5% across a broad concentration range (10 mg·L −1 -200 mg·L −1 ). In real water matrices (lake water, river water, and tap water), HJSiCa1.75 outperforms commercial activated carbon 2–3 times at equivalent dosages, maintaining a removal efficiency above 99%. Site-energy distribution (SED) analysis reveals that the overall average site density of HJSiCa1.75 (0.012 g·mol/(g·kJ)) exceeds that of GHJ (0.007) and AC-CN (0.004). Thermodynamics analysis revealed that adsorption is spontaneous (ΔG° < 0) and endothermic (ΔH° = +11.95 kJ·mol −1 ). Phytotoxicity tests using aquatic plants indicate substantially reduced toxicity in treated water, as evidenced by seed germination rates and root growth comparable to those observed in clean tap water, thereby suggesting improved ecological compatibility. Pelletization and column adsorption experiments confirm the structural integrity and operational stability of the adsorbent. Mechanistic investigation identifies a synergistic interplay of electrostatic attraction, ion exchange, surface complexation, and in-situ mineralization. Collectively, this work provides a rational structural engineering route to designing high-performance heavy-metal scavengers and facilitates the value-added utilization of natural clay for scalable water purification.

In the process of industrial wastewater discharge, water pollution remains a pressing challenge, with heavy metal pollution being the most critical issue. Electrochemical sensors offer advantages such as rapid response time, ease of integration with microprocessors for on-site testing. This paper proposes the use of self-assembled polystyrene (PS) microspheres as electrode modification materials, leveraging their ordered assembly structure to reduce signal differences between electrodes from different batches, thereby preparing an electrochemical sensor with good repeatability for the determination of heavy metal ions (HMIs) Cu(II), Zn(II), and Pb(II). The experiment employed square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV) to collect the stripping currents. The designed sensor exhibited sensitivities of 0.905 μA/μM, 0.408 μA/μM, and 0.264 μA/μM, as well as limits of detection (LODs) of 0.13 μM, 0.25 μM, and 0.29 μM (S/N = 3) for Cu(II), Zn(II), and Pb(II), respectively. To enhance detection accuracy, peak current, full stripping current, and feature current were respectively input combined with machine learning (ML) algorithms to construct prediction models to evaluate the performance of the sensor. The results demonstrated that the constructed RF-Feature model significantly improved detection accuracy. It demonstrated excellent reliability, with R 2 values of 0.9952, 0.9973, and 0.9976, and root mean square error (RMSE) values of 0.6580 μM, 0.5838 μM, and 0.8164 μM, for Cu(II), Zn(II), and Pb(II), respectively. The detection range was 1 μM to 70 μM. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the sensor in practical applications was validated by detection in real wastewater samples from industrial and hospital emissions. These results were validated using an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) method.

Heavy metal pollution, especially from Pb(II) and Cd(II), poses significant risks due to its persistence and bioaccumulation potential. Traditional removal methods face challenges like high costs and secondary pollution. This study developed a novel three-dimensional porous adsorbent XBS, derived from xanthate-modifiedPhanerochaete sordidaYK-624 (a white-rot fungus), for the rapid and efficient removal of Pb(II) and Cd(II) from wastewater. Characterization showed that XBS has a sponge-like structure with abundant functional groups, significantly enhancing its adsorption capacity and kinetics. XBS achieved 96% Pb(II) and 32% Cd(II) removal within 1 min at a 0.25 g/L dose, reaching over 95% of the maximum adsorption capacity within 30 min for Pb(II) and 240 min for Cd(II). The maximum capacities were 224.72 mg/g for Pb(II) and 82.99 mg/g for Cd(II). Kinetic and thermodynamic analyses indicated a chemisorption-driven process, which was both endothermic and spontaneous. XBS exhibited high selectivity for Pb(II) over Cd(II) and other metals (Tl(I), Cu(II)), attributed to stronger covalent interactions with sulfur- and nitrogen-containing groups. Mechanistic analyses (XRD, FTIR, and XPS) revealed that removal occurs via ion exchange, complexation, and precipitation, forming stable compounds like PbS/CdS and PbCO3/CdCO3. Given its cost-effectiveness, scalability, and high efficiency, XBS represents a promising adsorbent for heavy metal remediation, particularly in Pb(II)-contaminated wastewater treatment applications.
