Reduction treatment of nickel phyllosilicate supported Pt nanocatalysts determining product selectivity in CO2 hydrogenation

Miaomiao Song,Zhongliang Huang,Bin Chen,Sihan Liu,Shafqat Ullah,Dongren Cai,Guowu Zhan

Catalyst design is one of the most critical factors in selectively converting CO 2 and renewable H 2 to value-added chemicals. In this work, Pt nanoparticles with an average size of 2.9 nm were uniformly loaded on hollow mesoporous nickel phyllosilicate which then underwent various reduction treatments to partial extraction of Ni atoms and formation of Ni-Pt bimetallic catalysts for the selective CO 2 hydrogenation in a fixed bed reactor. Experimental results reveal that Pt nanoparticles supported on SiO 2 are highly selective to CO via reversed water gas shift (RWGS) reaction with 100% CO selectivity, while Pt nanoparticles supported on nickel phyllosilicate show high selectivity for CH 4 , particularly, under high reduction temperature. By simply changing the reduction temperature or reaction pressure, the production selectivity can be facilely tuned, and the maximum CH 4 selectivity achieved in the bimetallic Pt/Ni@phyllosilicate catalyst is 100%. The metallic Ni 0 reduced from nickel phyllosilicate owns a high concentration of Lewis basic sites, which could enhance the adsorption strength of CO 2 but prevent the dissociated adsorption. The diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) in different transient states were applied to study the mechanistic insights into how Ni-Pt dual sites tune the product selectivity. The results suggest that CO* over Pt site is the key species for CO 2 conversion to CO, whereas the produced CO* could be further hydrogenated to CH x O* intermediate over Ni site, leading to the formation of CH 4 . The present work offers a new method to prepare Ni-Pt bimetallic catalysts with excellent CO 2 hydrogenation performance towards CH 4 .

Pt-Functionalized SnO2 Hollow Nanotubular Structures for H2S Sensing: Experimental Investigation and DFT Insights

Hui Li,Yuhao Qiu,Xuxu Wang,Banglei Liang,Zongtao Wang,Yingying Dong,Qiao Feng

Pt-functionalized SnO2hollow nanotubular structures were fabricated by single-nozzle electrospinning followed by calcination and evaluated for H2S sensing. At an operating temperature of 350 °C, the 2 wt% Pt/SnO2sensor exhibited a response of 567.1 to 50 ppm H2S, which was 11.9 times higher than that of pristine SnO2. The sensor showed response and recovery times of approximately 1 and 150 s, respectively, an experimental detection limit of 200 ppb, as well as excellent selectivity, repeatability, and long-term stability. Experimental characterizations and DFT calculations indicated that the improved performance arises from the accessible gas-diffusion pathways of the hollow nanotubular structure, together with Pt-enhanced H2S adsorption and interfacial electronic modulation. In a proof-of-concept shrimp storage test, the sensor response changed consistently with pH, color difference, and sensory scores, with a marked response increase near the observed transition in freshness indicators. These findings demonstrate the potential of Pt/SnO2HNTSs for H2S sensing and non-destructive shrimp freshness monitoring.

Identification of Active Sites on High-Performance Pt/Al2O3 Catalyst for Cryogenic CO Oxidation

Yang Chen,Yingxin Feng,Lin Li,Jingyue Liu,Xiaoli Pan,Wei Liu,Fenfei Wei,Yitao Cui,Botao Qiao,Xiucheng Sun,Xiaoyu Li,Jian Lin,Sen Lin,Xiaodong Wang,Tao Zhang

Exclusive Pt species supported on inert substrates have not achieved satisfactory performance for cryogenic CO oxidation because of the constraint of the competitive Langmuir–Hinshelwood process in which the strongly adsorbed CO inhibits the activation of O2. Here, we develop a catalyst of Pt nanoparticles on Al2O3 that exhibits extremely high activity with 100% CO conversion at −20 °C and orders of magnitude higher specific rate than current commercial catalysts. Detailed catalyst characterizations reveal the presence of metallic Pt sites and positively charged ones associated with the OH species in Pt/Al2O3. Both experimental data and theoretical calculations suggest that CO adsorbed on Pt(OH) kink sites reacts with OH species covering Pt0 terrace sites to release CO2. Afterward, O2 is facilely activated on terrace sites to regenerate OH. The presence of OH species and the synergy between Pt kink and terrace sites on the Pt species lead to an ultralow reaction barrier for CO oxidation.

Sandwich-Structured MXene/Carbon Hybrid Support Decorated with Pt Nanoparticles for Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Ziyu Zhang,Chang Liu,Yunkun Dai,Bo Liu,Pan Guo,Fengdi Tu,Miao Ma,Lixiao Shen,Zigang Zhao,Yangyang Liu,Yunlong Zhang,Lei Zhao,Zhenbo Wang

Carbon supports for cathodic catalysts in proton-exchange membrane fuel cells suffer from rapid corrosion and instability; therefore, alternative supports with a stable structure and a high electric conductivity are highly required. In this paper, a three-dimensional support hybridized by MXene and Ketjen Black is developed, in which Ketjen Black is sandwiched between MXene nanosheets (MCM). After decorating with Pt nanoparticles by a facile wet-chemical approach, a three-dimensional (3D) Pt/MCM catalyst is obtained. The intercalated Ketjen Black prevents the stacking of MXene nanosheets, thus increasing the specific surface area of the catalyst and exposing the active sites. The strong interaction between functionalized MXene nanosheets and Pt nanoparticles further enhances its intrinsic electrocatalytic activity. Pt/MCM demonstrated encouraging ORR activity with the half-wave potential and specific activity of 0.892 V and 0.377 mA·cm–2, respectively, surpassing the state-of-the-art Pt/C catalysts. Especially, Pt/MCM achieves ultrahigh durability with a 1 mV decrease in half-wave potential and a 1.73% decrease in mass activity after an accelerated durability test. Given the performance and structure–activity relationships of Pt/MCM, it holds great potential for various energy and catalysis-related applications.

One-pot redox synthesis of Pt/Fe3O4 catalyst for efficiently chemoselective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde

Yong Zhang,Chun Chen,Wanbing Gong,Jieyao Song,Yanping Su,Haimin Zhang,Guozhong Wang,Huijun Zhao

External additives (i.e., ionic electride donors) are usually necessary to obtain a high catalytic performance in an electron-density-dependent chemoselective hydrogenation reaction. Here, a sphere-shaped Pt/Fe3O4 catalyst is prepared through a one-pot redox reaction using Pt(IV) and Fe(II) precursors. The experimental results show that the prepared Pt/Fe3O4 catalyst with an Fe to Pt mole ratio of 100 : 1 can afford a high conversion of 94.2% towards cinnamaldehyde (CAL) and good selectivity of 92.2% towards cinnamyl alcohol (COL) under the mild conditions of 303 K, 5 bar H2 for 150 min in the chemoselective reduction of CAL. The excellent catalytic performance could be attributed to the dissociation of H2 and adsorption of CAL via a vertical configuration modulated by the electronic effect between Pt and Fe3O4, and the abundant available active sites induced by uniformly dispersed Pt nanoparticles. Additionally, the intrinsic magnetism of Fe3O4 nanospheres endows the catalyst with a rapid separation property, favourable for repeated use of a catalyst.

Enhancing catalytic H2 generation by surface electronic tuning of systematically controlled Pt-Pb nanocrystals

E Bin,Huang Bolong,Zhang Nan,Shao Qi,Li Yujing,Huang Xiaoqing

Although many previous studies have shown that the shape-control of nanocrystal (NCs) is an efficient strategy to improve the catalytic performance, these syntheses were conducted under very different conditions, which are not suitable for the shape-dependent properties studies as well as catalysis optimization. Herein, we demonstrate an effective method for the selective synthesis of well-defined PtPb NCs in a highly controllable manner. Four distinct PtPb NCs, namely PtPb peanut nanocrystals, PtPb hexagonal nanoplates, PtPb octahedra nanocrystals (ONCs) and PtPb nanoparticles have been selectively prepared in the presence of different phenols. Significantly, we found that the created PtPb NCs/C shows the shape-dependent activity with the optimized PtPb ONCs/C being the most active for the ethanol reforming to H 2 , 22.4 times higher than the commercial Pt/C. The high performance of PtPb ONCs/C has been also successfully expanded into other polyhydric alcohols reformings. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) reveals that the high Pt(0)/Pt(II) ratio in PtPb NCs/C enhances the alcohols reforming. The density functional theory (DFT) studies show the PtPb ONCs possess the highest surface averaged electronic occupation for unit Pt-atom, matching well with XPS results. The PtPb ONCs/C also displays excellent durability with limited activity decay and negligible structure/composition changes after ten cycles. This work demonstrates an important advance in the high-level control of metallic nanostructures to tune the catalytic activities.

Yuejiao Li,Lisha Wu,Yajun Ding,Zhong-Shuai Wu

Summary The commercial mass production of bifunctional oxygen catalysts with high activity and stability is critical for constructing high-performance lithium-oxygen (Li-O 2 ) batteries, but remains challenging. Herein, we describe a protocol for the scalable fabrication of a 2D bifunctional electrocatalyst of Pt/RuO 2 /graphene by spatial confinement strategy and elaborately evaluate its oxygen reduction/evolution reactions for advanced Li-O 2 batteries. We then detail the synthesis steps for preparing materials followed by assembly and evaluation of the three-electrode systems and coin-type Li-O 2 batteries. For complete details on the use and execution of this protocol, please refer to Li et al. (2023). 1

Room-temperature degradation of o-xylene in simulated air using an online-regenerable plasma-catalysis reactor with low amounts of nanosized noble metals on Co3O4

Shucheng DI,Jiacheng XU,Shuiliang YAO,Jing LI,Zuliang WU,Erhao GAO,Jiali ZHU,Lianxin DAI,Weihua LIU,Buhe ZHANG,Junwei ZHANG

The plasma catalytic degradation of o-xylene in simulated air was improved by loading low amounts of Pt, Pd, or Au onto Co3O4. At room temperature, o-xylene conversion and COx selectivity using a 0.1 wt% Pt/Co3O4 catalyst reached 98.9% and 80%, and the energy efficiency was at the top level in comparison with values in the literature. A stable o-xylene degradation performance could be obtained by online regenerating the heat-insulated reactor with a high energy density. After characterization, it was found that the loading of nanosized Pt not only increased the Co3+/Co2+ ratio, where the Co3+ benefitted the formation of reactive oxygen species, but also conduced Pt0 to oxygen activation, resulting in effective promotion of complete o-xylene oxidation. Operando plasma diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy demonstrated the complete o-xylene oxidation and proved that Pt played a key role in the complete oxidation of o-xylene.

Boron and nitrogen codoped carbon nanohorn-supported Pt nanocrystals as highly-efficient methanol oxidation electrocatalysts

Xiangjie Guo,Qi Wang,Haiyan He,Huajie Huang

The large-scale commercialization of direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) largely depends on the design and synthesis of advanced Pt-based anode catalysts with excellent electrocatalytic performance and acceptable costs. Herein, we propose a controllable and scalable method to the construction of ultrafine Pt nanocrystals supported by boron and nitrogen codoped carbon nanohorns (Pt/BN-CNH) as electrocatalysts for methanol oxidation reaction. The as-derived Pt/BN-CNH architectures are endowed with a series of interesting physicochemical properties, such as accessible internal pores, numerous active conical tips, coexistence of B and N atoms, and homogeneous Pt distribution. Consequently, the resulting Pt/BN-CNH catalysts present high catalytic activity, reliable long-term stability as well as strong antipoisoning capacity towards methanol oxidation, all of which are superior to those of conventional Pt/carbon black, Pt/carbon nanotube, Pt/graphene and Pt/undoped CNH catalysts, thus offering great potentials in the next-generation DMFC devices.

Persulfate activation boosted highly efficient photodegradation of norfloxacin catalyzed by Pt selectively loading LaOCl (001)

Wujian Zhang,Zhiling Huang,Hui Shen,Zhenhai Gu,Shengjie Xia,Panpan Zhang,Wenfeng Han,Ying Li,Haodong Tang

The spatial loading of redox cocatalysts on different faces of semiconductor single crystals is an effective approach to construct efficient photocatalysts . This work selectively deposits Pt nanoparticles on the electron-rich (001) face of LaOCl catalyst (Pt/LaOCl-P). The Pt/LaOCl-P catalyst with selective deposition on (001) facet exhibited higher photocatalytic activity for NOR degradation than the catalyst with random deposition on the entire surface (Pt/LaOCl-R). It indicates that the separation of facet charges upon photoexcitation may be a unique pathway for efficient photocatalysts. After the addition of persulfate, the generated sulfate radicals have a synergistic effect with the original hydroxyl radicals and superoxide radicals , which further improves the photodegradation performance. In addition, the effects of catalyst dosage and pH on photodegradation were discussed and the recycling performance of the materials was tested. The possible degradation pathways and mechanism of NOR were degraded by DFT calculation and LC-MS analysis.

Highly sensitive hydrogen sensor based on a U-shaped microfiber interferometer coated with Pt/WO3

Shi Qiu,Liang Chai,Jinhui Yuan,Bin Liu,Lijiao Zu,Kuiru Wang,Binbin Yan,Xinzhu Sang,Xingdao He,Qiang Wu

As the extensive application of hydrogen energy , highly sensitive detection of hydrogen is important to prevent the risk of an explosion. To achieve good sensing stability, (3-Aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES) was used to immobilize Pt/WO 3 on the U-shaped microfiber sensor. The experimental results show that the proposed U-shaped single mode-tapered four core-single mode (STFS) microfiber sensor has good spectrum stability (maximum wavelength perturbation of 0.013 nm over 30 min) and long-term stability (13 days). Furthermore, when the concentration of hydrogen is changed from 0 % to 1 %, the proposed U-shaped STFS microfiber hydrogen sensor shows a high sensitivity of −17.706 nm/% and a good linearity with a linear regression coefficient of 0.996. The developed hydrogen sensor has temperature and RH sensitivities of 0.0114 nm/℃ and 0.006 nm/%RH, respectively, indicating low temperature and RH cross-sensitivity to hydrogen measurement. The proposed U-shaped STFS microfiber sensor and the functionalized method have potential applications in hydrogen detection, prevention of hydrogen-related accidents and other fields.

Preparation of Pt-Pd/PANI/Graphene Nanosheets Composites as Electrocatalysts for Direct Methanol Fuel Cell

Ling Shi,Zefeng Wang,Xianlan Chen,Guangming Yang,Wei Liu

The synthesis of noble metal nanoparticle with controlled shapes is an attractive goal in developing highly active catalysts. However, constructing high-quality noble metallic nanocatalysts with good electrocatalytic activity remains a huge challenge to date. In this research work, the high-quality polyaniline functionalized graphene nanosheets (PANI/GNS) were prepared by an interfacial polymerization method. The abundant -NH2 groups onto the surface of resulted PANI/GNS nanocomposites, and can be used as active site for growing high load rate of Pd nanoparticles (NPs). Subsequently, Pt NPs were successfully deposited on the Pd surface formed Pt-Pd/PANI/graphene nanosheets (Pt-Pd/PANI/GNS) composites. Interestingly, the shape of Pt-Pd bimetallic can be effectively controlled by simply changing the reaction parameters. The shape and structure of nanocatalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The electrocatalytic properties of nanocomposites were characterized by cyclic voltammetry (CV). The TEM images show that the Pt-Pd nanoflowers were successfully decorated onto the surface of PANI/GNS nanocomposites. The electrocatalytic properties for dioxygen and methanol of prepared Pt-Pd/PANI/GNS nanocatalyst were investigated. The electrochemical results show that the nanocatalysts exhibit higher electrocatalytic activity for methanol oxidation and dioxygen reduction.
