All-solid-state lithium-sulfur batteries (ASSLSBs) with polymer electrolytes have high theoretical energy density and improved safety, providing appealing potential for next-generation energy storage. However, limiting the dissolution of long-chain polysulfides (LiPSs) in polymer electrolyte and achieving high S loading in cathodes remains a challenge. To tackle this issue, we demonstrate a 3D electrode composed of a mixture of styrene butadiene rubber and lithium carboxyl methyl cellulose as the binder, equipped with a high concentration of all-solid-state polyethylene oxide (PEO) -based electrolyte filled with LLZTO (Li 6.5 La 3 Zr 1.5 Ta 0.5 O 12 ) and LiPSs (named LiPS/LLZTO-CL/S). The synergistic design exhibits outstanding structural stability, preventing the dissolution of long-chain LiPSs, enhancing the kinetics of short-chain LiPSs, alleviating volume expansion, and offering pathways for ion/electron transport. The battery possesses attractive cycling stability and can maintain high capacity retention (1106 mAh g −1 even after 500 cycles) at 0.2 C. Its structural and electrochemical advantages enable stable cycling at a high sulfur loading of 7.0 mg cm −2 and 0.5 C without electrolyte in the cathode. This work proposes a novel strategy for the structural design of high-loading polymer ASSLSBs.

Efficient extraction of uranium from seawater supports the development of nuclear energy. To improve the utilization of the adsorbent binding sites, four poly (ionic liquid)s were synthesized using vinylimidazolium-based ionic liquids as binding sites and divinylbenzene to modulate material distance, designated as P-VEIM-Br, P-VEIM-OAc, P-VEIM-C 3 H 7 COO, and P-VEIM-TFA. The results indicate that P-VEIM-OAc exhibits enhanced uranium adsorption at the pH range of 7.0–10.0 with uranium removal efficiency exceeding 90% at an initial concentration of 10 mg L −1 . The test experiments demonstrated that the maximum uranium adsorption capacity of P-VEIM-OAc is 989 mg g −1 (298 K, pH = 8.0). Mechanistic investigations using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, density functional theory calculations, and zeta potential measurements revealed that the high adsorption performance arises from electrostatic attraction, π–π stacking interactions and hydrogen bonding. In addition, P-VEIM-OAc showed excellent selectivity for uranium in simulated seawater and retained its performance over five cycles. This strategy provides favorable technical support for improving uranium extraction from real seawater.

Low toughness remains an enduring constraint to cementitious materials. Manipulating calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H), the “genetic component” of cement, which determines mechanical properties of cementitious materials, presents an attractive strategy for intrinsic toughening. However, the modulation is constrained by small-length scale and limited enhancement. Herein, this work proposes an approach to fabricate nacre-mimetic C-S-H bulk composite with brick-mortar microstructure. The composite exhibits an excellent combination of high flexural strength, toughness and impact resistance, with toughness surpassing pure C-S-H and cement paste by factors of over 1000 times, and even outperforming that of natural nacre, reinforced cement-based materials and existing reported C-S-H-based materials. The nacre-mimetic C-S-H composite also exhibits a 20- to 30-fold increase in impact resistance and flexural strength compared to pure C-S-H, respectively. Multi-scale simulations reveal strengthening and toughening mechanisms, including molecular-scale coordination, nano-asperities, viscoplastic deformation, and crack deflection across micro-macro scales. The developed C-S-H nacre not only achieves remarkably high toughness and broadens the potential for scalable application, but also paves a way for designing advanced bioinspired cementitious and silicate-based materials in structural applications.

CdS exhibits promising potential for photocatalytic nitrate reduction (PNRR). However, simultaneously achieving high activity and long-term stability remains challenging due to severe photo-corrosion induced by hole accumulation and insufficient interfacial active sites arising from its low bulk-specific surface area. Herein, we propose a synergistic strategy integrating pore confinement and S-scheme charge transfer to construct a COF-confined, highly dispersed, small-sized CdS S-scheme heterojunction photocatalytic system (CdS/COF). The ordered nanochannels of the COF serve as an in-situ growth template, enabling uniform anchoring of highly dispersed CdS nanocrystals, thereby maximizing active-site exposure and shortening charge diffusion pathways. The S-scheme interface facilitates the selective recombination of low-energy charge carriers, preserves the strong reduction potential of CdS-derived electrons, and continuously extracts photogenerated holes, thereby effectively suppressing photo-corrosion. As a result, the CdS/COF system delivers an NH 4 + yield of 138.21 μmol g −1 h −1 in PNRR, markedly surpassing those of single-component and non-confined counterparts. Multi-scale in-situ characterizations elucidate the critical roles of confinement effects and S-scheme charge transfer in boosting catalytic performance and structural stability. This work establishes a general “confinement-interface” coupling strategy for structural construction and regulation, offering an effective route toward photo-corrosion resistance and efficient multi-electron conversion in CdS-based PNRR photocatalysts.

S-CeNiFe LDH/NiS 2 enhances the durability of seawater splitting. • Sacrificial NiS 2 nanoparticles protect catalyst from Cl- corrosion. • Sulphuration and Ce atoms mitigate the loss of Ni/Fe during seawater splitting. • Downshifted d-band optimizes the OER and suppresses ClER. The development of efficient and stable electrocatalysts to overcome chloride corrosion is crucial for sustainable hydrogen production via alkaline seawater electrolysis. Herein, a Ce-doped NiFe LDH heterostructure (S-CeNiFe LDH/NiS 2 ) was synthesized and exhibited enhanced bifunctional activity for both the oxygen and hydrogen evolution reactions (OER/HER) in alkaline seawater (1 M KOH + natural seawater), along with seawater corrosion resistance by the sacrificial NiS 2 nanoparticles. The optimized S-Ce 0.4 NiFe LDH/NiS 2 requires low overpotentials of only 310 mV for OER and 290 mV for HER at 100 mA cm -2 , surpassing both unsulfurated CeNiFe LDH and bare NiFe LDH. It also shows smaller Tafel slopes and maintains excellent stability over 100 h with minimal decay. The sacrificial role of NiS 2 in protecting LDHs is confirmed by its structural and chemical evolution alongside attenuated seawater decomposition. Performance enhancement stems from heterostructure synergy: expanded surface area, accelerated charge transfer, Ce doping-induced electronic modulation, and conductive NiS 2 for HER. A directional photogenerated electron transfer channel from ZnIn 2 S 4 to Mo 2 TiC 2 -Ru was formed in ZnIn 2 S 4 /Mo 2 TiC 2 -Ru. • The interface electronic delocalization effect between Ru nanoclusters and Mo 2 TiC 2 synergistically optimizes the water dissociation and hydrogen evolution sites. • ZnIn 2 S 4 /Mo 2 TiC 2 -Ru exhibits excellent photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity under both visible light and natural light conditions. The photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE) rate on ZnIn 2 S 4 is severely limited by the low utilization of photogenerated electrons and the sluggish reaction kinetics. Driving the directional transfer of photogenerated electrons to the target site is crucial for enhancing the electron utilization efficiency and the PHE performance. Herein, this study rationally designed a ternary composite photocatalyst ZnIn 2 S 4 /Mo 2 TiC 2 -Ru C , in which Mo 2 TiC 2 -Ru C serves as an electron acceptor and efficient active site. The in-situ KPFM and Mott-Schottky results indicate that the establishment of interfacial electron transport channel accelerates the transfer of photogenerated electrons from ZnIn 2 S 4 to Mo 2 TiC 2 . Density functional theory (DFT) calculations verify the strong metal-support interaction (EMSI) and interfacial electron delocalization of Mo 2 TiC 2 -Ru C , which synergistically optimize the water dissociation at Ru nanocluster and the hydrogen evolution desorption at the Mo 2 TiC 2 terminal, promoting the efficient utilization of photogenerated electrons. Therefore, ZnIn 2 S 4 /Mo 2 TiC 2 -Ru C achieved a PHE rate of 6.15 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 under visible light, and demonstrated excellent potential for PHE application under natural light. This study provides a new paradigm for integrating electron transfer dynamics with active site engineering to improve the utilization efficiency of photogenerated electrons in the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution process. Photocatalysis has emerged as a highly promising strategy to address global energy and environmental challenges. Although S-scheme heterojunctions offer a robust strategy for enhancing the migration efficiency of photo-generated charge carriers, their capability to precisely regulate the generation of reactive oxygen species for bacterial inactivation remains unclear. Here, a 2D/2D S-scheme heterojunction is constructed that enables ultrafast interfacial electron transfer and, upon introducing a polar surface, further achieves a marked enhancement in H 2 O 2 production. As a result, the catalyst exhibits markedly enhanced photocatalytic water disinfection performance, achieving a complete 7-log inactivation of E. coli within 40 min under simulated-sunlight irradiation (λ = 200–2500 nm). This work provides new insights into harnessing the potential of S-scheme heterojunctions for the precise control of ROS generation during water disinfection.

Efficient utilization of renewable biomass resources is one of the feasible approaches to address the massive consumption of fossil fuels accompanying severe resource crises and environmental pollution. Currently, 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid derived from the oxidation of biomass-based 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a valuable chemical as the alternative to the fossil resource-derived terephthalic acid. However, the development of high-performance and low-cost Cu-based electrocatalysts for the efficient HMF oxidation reaction (HMFOR) remains an enormous challenge. Guided by our theoretical prediction, we proposed a coordination-pyrolysis strategy to fabricate highly dispersed copper sulfide (CuS) nanosheets supported on N-doped porous carbon precatalyst (CuS@NC). The covalent S species trigger the deep reconstruction of CuS nanosheets, and the in situ generated SO 4 2− not only promotes the formation of Cu 2+δ species but also facilitates the cleavage of α–C–H and –O–H bonds in HMF. The optimized CuS@NC achieved a high current density of 335 mA cm −2 at 1.50 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode, representing a remarkable 628% enhancement over the control catalyst. This study integrates theoretical predictions with experimental investigations to systematically elucidate how S species promote the deep reconstruction of CuS nanosheets to enhance the HMFOR performance and proposes a scalable strategy for preparing ultra-uniform transition metal sulfide precatalysts.

During the catalytic growth of CNTs, the ordered arrangement of catalysts is critical for maintaining their array structure. Unlike mechanisms that suppress nanoparticle migration via high catalyst density to enforce CNTs array growth, this study proposes a strategy involving surface engineering and nanoparticle nucleation to construct Mo-Fe-S/Al 2 O 3 heterogeneous ternary catalysts. This method modulates the electronic density of Fe sites to activate catalytic activity while constructing Mo-Fe-S sites on the catalyst surface to catalyze the growth of a "C network" (carbon pillars and CNTs), thereby forming CNTs arrays. On one hand, S and Mo weaken the interfacial interactions between Al 2 O 3 and inactive FeO x nanoparticles, promoting active particle nucleation; on the other hand, the "C network" grown via Mo-Fe-S constitutes the top part of the CNTs arrays, confining the internal nanoparticles (NPs) to enable vertically aligned growth of CNTs. Characterizations reveal NPs with diameters of ∼20 nm and symmetrically grown CNTs arrays with average diameters and heights of 18.21 nm and 10.10μm, respectively. This work provides an approach for the catalytic growth of CNTs arrays using supported catalysts, by forming a "C network" to suppress the entanglement of NPs during the catalytic growth of CNTs, thereby forming the CNTs array structure.

Rationally designing a lithiophilic layer on the current collector (CC) is essential for realizing the next-generation high energy density of lean lithium metal batteries (LLMBs). However, challenges caused by the nonuniform Li deposition and fragile solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) severely restrict their commercialization. Herein, a lithiophilic Cu 2 Se layer is fabricated on commercial Cu CCs (Cu 2 Se/Cu) by a facile in-situ selenization approach to fulfill stable and homogeneous Li deposition. The unique s -p hybridization between p x / p y orbitals of Li and Se sites triggers electronic structure reconfiguration and forms the abundant lithiophilic interface. Furthermore, the in-situ generated Li 2 Se/LiF-rich SEI layer not only enhances the adsorption capability, but also decreases the ionic diffusion barrier. Consequently, The Cu 2 Se/Cu based symmetric cell show remarkable cycling stability over 3000 h. The full cell with LiFePO 4 cathode maintains an excellent cycling stability of 88.8 % after 400 cycles at 1C. After pairing with the high-loading sulfur cathodes (6.3 mg cm −2 ), the full cell shows a high areal capacity of 4.3 mAh cm −2 with stable cycling performance at an N/P ratio of 2.6. Therefore, this work highlights the potential of Li-dominant s -p orbital hybridization by incorporating Se sites into commercial Cu CCs for designing high-capacity and cycling reversible LLMBs.

Developing highly active and stable non-precious-metal electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is essential for efficient green hydrogen production. However, monometallic catalysts exhibit poor stability and high overpotentials under high current densities. Therefore, the development of multi-metallic catalysts has become a focus of attention. Herein, we report a NiCoFeS/NF catalyst that exhibits higher OER activity in alkaline solution compare with commercial RuO 2 -based catalysts. The synthesized NiCoFeS/NF catalyst delivers a current density of 100 mA cm − 2 at a low overpotential of 280 mV and exhibits a Tafel slope of 49 mV dec − 1 , reflecting its favorable kinetics. Furthermore, the NiCoFeS/NF catalyst exhibited a long-term stability over 120 h, ensuring its potential for practical applications. Detailed characterizations revealed that sulfur incorporation not only creates additional active sites but also induces the self-unfolding of nanoparticles into nanosheets, thereby enlarging the electrochemically active surface area (ECSA). The misuse of tetracycline (TC) poses a significant threat to the natural environment, necessitating the development of efficient methods for its degradation. Heterojunction photocatalysts have emerged as a promising approach for the degradation of such pollutants. This work aims to construct a novel NiWO 4 /Mn 0.3 Cd 0.7 S (NWO/MCS) S-scheme heterojunction using solvothermal coupled with mechanical mixing methods for efficient photocatalytic degradation of TC. The optimized NWO/MCS composite exhibited an 82% removal rate within 40 minutes under visible light irradiation, which represents an 18.4-fold and 1.13-fold improvement compared with pristine NWO and MCS, respectively. Various analytical methods and DFT calculations were utilized to characterize the structure and photophysical properties as well as prove the electron flow of the heterojunction, respectively. This work provides evidence of efficient charge carrier transfer between NWO and MCS within the S-scheme heterojunction, which contributes to the enhanced photocatalytic activity. The rational structural configuration of the S-scheme heterojunction has been shown to improve both the reduction and oxidation capabilities, offering a potential pathway for developing photocatalysts with high antibiotic removal efficiency.
