The electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (eNRR) has been widely recognized as a promising method for green ammonia synthesis. However, the inert NN bond, inferior catalytic activity and small electrochemically active area impede its practical application. To circumvent these problems, we proposed self-supported Ti-doped iron phosphide (FeP) nanorod arrays grown on carbon cloth (Ti-FeP/CC) as an electrode for eNRR. The introduction of Ti doping sites regulated the electron structure of FeP, leading to electron migration from Fe to P, which facilitated N2-to-NH3 conversion. The as-prepared Ti-FeP/CC showed an enhancement of electrochemical surface area (ECSA), high electrical conductivity and well-exposed active sites. Ti-FeP/CC was capable of producing a high NH3 yield of 10.93 μg h−1 cm−2 and faradaic efficiency of 10.77% at an optimal voltage of −0.3 V (vs. RHE) in a 0.1 M Na2SO4 solution with excellent stability and durability during the eNRR process. This work not only presents a promising electrode material for eNRR, but also provides a new insight into rational heteroatom doping for electrocatalysis.

Abstract A series of Mn–Ti oxide catalysts were synthesized by the sol–gel method and the effects of different synthesis conditions were investigated in sequence. The microstructures and properties of the catalysts were characterized by using N 2 adsorption–desorption, XRD, SEM, H 2 -TPR, NH 3 -TPD, Raman and XPS. The catalytic performance over Mn–Ti oxide catalysts prepared under different synthesis conditions for the low-temperature SCR of NO with NH 3 were also comparatively evaluated. The results reveal that the calcination temperature and metal source play a significant role in the characteristics and the SCR activities of the catalysts. A relatively low calcination temperature is beneficial to low-temperature SCR activity. Manganese nitrate or manganese acetate as the Mn source combining with tetrabutyl titanate as Ti source can achieve high SCR activities. The excellent low-temperature NH 3 -SCR activity can be ascribed to the appropriate textural properties, amorphous Mn-oxides with equal ratio of Mn 3+ /Mn 4+ , good low-temperature reducibility and abundant surface B-acid sites. In order to enhance the electron transmission rate of photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC), BiVO 4 @PDA-wt% composite was successfully prepared by hydrothermal synthesis and chemical polymerization method, and used to modify TiO 2 /Ti to obtain BiVO 4 @PDA/TiO 2 /Ti photoanode with high efficient visible light-response. The structure, morphology, optical and photoelectrochemical properties of BiVO 4 @PDA/TiO 2 /Ti photoanode were characterized and explored. BiVO 4 @PDA-10 %/TiO 2 /Ti obtained the maximum photocurrent density of 10.68 mA cm −2 at 1.0 V ( vs . SCE) under visible light illumination, which was 4.7 times that of BiVO 4 /TiO 2 /Ti. This is because of its extended π-conjugated electron system, PDA can significantly promote the charge transfer between BiVO 4 and TiO 2. Therefore, the separation of photogenerated electrons and holes in space can be realized, thereby the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs can be reduced and ultimately the photocatalytic performance can be enhanced. With BiVO 4 @PDA-10 %/TiO 2 /Ti photoanode and Cu 2 O/Cu cathode, the visible-light responsive PFC exhibited high organics degradation and electricity conversion performance. Its photocurrent density, maximum power density and Rhodamine B degradation efficiency were 0.42 mA cm −2 , 58.55μW cm −2 and 97.28 %, respectively.

Delicate mediation on structural properties and surface wettability of catalysts is the key strategy towards a high catalytic performance but remains challenging. Herein, organic–inorganic hybrid Ti-containing mesoporous materials uniformly incorporated with methyl (C1-HMS-x) have been successfully fabricated by an in situ n-octane mediated strategy and used as catalysts in solvent-free oxidation desulfurization (ODS) with H 2 O 2 . Benefiting from the synergy of n-octane with organosilane, the C1-HMS-x showed more tetrahedrally coordinated Ti sites, remarkably increased specific surface area and pore volume. Such properties endow the catalyst with not only a higher intrinsic catalytic activity, but also excellent amphiphilicity and facilitated mass transfer. Besides, the catalyst also acts as a high-efficiency adsorbent for oxidized sulfur compounds, further boosting the ODS process. As a result, complete desulfurization of model oil containing 500 ppm dibenzothiophene (DBT) was achieved with a low ratio of O/S as 2.5 and catalyst dosage as 5 g/L. The C1-HMS-x also presented greatly enhanced desulfurization efficiency for refractory thiophene (Tp) and steric hindered 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene (4,6-DMDBT). More importantly, the mediation of morphology and wettability by n-octane enables the generated catalyst to be a superior Pickering interfacial catalyst for ODS without stirring. A higher ODS conversion was achieved in the oil-in-methanol emulsion system than that in methanol-in-oil system. The easier accessibility of active sites at emulsion interface for S-compound is responsible for the enhanced emulsion catalytic performance. Such mediation strategy and new catalytic system hold a great promise for next-generation green and sustainable chemistry.

Implant infections caused by bacteria and oxidative stress induced by reactive oxygen species (ROS) would seriously hinder the osseointegration at the interface of bone and titanium (Ti) implant, leading to a failure. Therefore, it is highly desirable to develop an implant surface modification with antibacterial and antioxidant functions. Silver (Ag), which exhibit a broad spectrum of antibacterial properties, was used in this work. Tannic acid (TA) was selected as the reducing agent to realize the generation of Ag nanoparticles , and as an antioxidant to achieve the antioxidative activity of Ti implants. So, a layer of anatase titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) nanotubes with a diameter of 138.72 ± 14.02 nm was formed on the surface of Ti substrate by anodization and annealing, followed by loading Ag nanoparticles, growing bioactive hydroxyapatite (HA) crystals, and finally forming Ag-HA/TA composite coatings . Morphology and phase composition investigations detected the presence of Ag nanoparticles and HA crystals in the coatings. The results reveal the uniformly distributed Ag particles with a diameter of about 20– 80 nm and needle-like HA crystals with a diameter of about 18– 20 nm. Results of total antioxidant capacity tests indicate that the slow release of TA from the composite coatings leads to a persistent antioxidative activity. The antibacterial and cell compatibility tests in vitro reveal that the Ag-HA/TA coating has high antibacterial activity against both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus and good cytocompatibility effect with MC3T3-E1 cell lines. This study presents a simple and effective method for the incorporation of antibacterial agents and antioxidant into HA coatings to modify metallic implant surfaces.

Ti-based immobilized metal affinity chromatography (IMAC) nanomaterial has shown high potential in phosphoproteome mass-spectrometric (MS) analysis. However, the limited surface area and poor solubility will greatly restrict its use in phosphoproteome research. To overcome these two key drawbacks, a novel Ti-based IMAC nanomaterial was prepared by Ti-bonded β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) anchored on the surface of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) (denoted as COOH-CNTs-CD-Ti) and successfully applied as a biofunctional adsorbent for selectively enriching trace phosphopeptides. In the selective enrichment process, CNTs provided greater surface area for the absorption of phosphopeptides, while β-CD also offered a greater opportunity for the interaction between phosphopeptides and Ti 4+ . COOH-CNTs-CD-Ti with the aforementioned properities exhibited higher selectivity for phosphopeptides from the standard protein digests, the tryptic digests of nonfat milk and human serum, showing a great selective enrichment capability towards complex biological samples.

The global detection and potential harm of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) call for the effective decomposition technology. In this study, the modified β-PbO 2 anodes with different hydrophobicity (Ti/SnO 2 -Sb/La-PbO 2 , Ti/SnO 2 -Sb/La-PbO 2 -PTFE and Ti/SnO 2 -Sb/La-PbO 2 -PVDF) were prepared to decompose aqueous PPCPs, i.e. isoniazid, methotrexate, carbamazepine, sulfamethoxazole and ibuprofen. PTFE and PVDF modification improved the physical property, electrochemical property, stability and safety of β-PbO 2 electrode. Moreover, Ti/SnO 2 -Sb/La-PbO 2 -PVDF had the highest oxygen evolution potential (1.95 V vs. SCE), the largest electroactive area (88.85 cm 2 ), the highest HO • production rate (10.44 mM min −1 m −2 ) and the best degradation performance for all the five PPCPs. The hydrophobic surface increased the proportion of free HO • , resulting in higher radical utilization rate and better degradation performance. The excessive hydrophobicity could decrease the degradation performance of PPCPs with high log K ow due to the relatively large hydrophobic force zone. Furthermore, the hydrophobicity enhanced the mineralization (current) efficiency of isoniazid, and its electrochemical degradation mechanism on Ti/SnO 2 -Sb/La-PbO 2 -PVDF was thoroughly proposed. These results demonstrated that Ti/SnO 2 -Sb/La-PbO 2 -PVDF anode exhibited a good application prospect in treating wastewater containing PPCPs.

The wide production and utilization of nanoparticulate Ag and Ti inevitably result in their release into the environment. Thus far, limited information is available regarding to what extent the nanoparticulate Ag and Ti could accumulate in biota and magnify along the food chain in real natural aquatic environments. With the application of single particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy, we quantitatively demonstrated that both nanoparticulate Ag (18.8–41.0 nm) and Ti (46.6–116 nm) occurred in the water, sediment and aquatic organisms in Taihu Lake, China. Nanoparticulate Ag exhibited greater bioaccumulation potential compared to its other chemical counterparts, and also a greater bioaccumulation factor than nanoparticulate Ti. Sediment served as a main reservoir for nanoparticulate Ag and Ti, and acted as one important exposure source for invertebrates. According to the concentrations of nanoparticulate Ag and Ti in aquatic organisms at different trophic levels, including a variety of invertebrates and fish species, the total and nanoparticulate Ti appeared to be biodiluted in the food web with trophic magnification factors (TMFs) < 1. Conversely, biomagnification of nanoparticulate Ag was found in the fish food web with a TMF of 1.21, while the total Ag was biodiluted. These findings serve as the first line of evidence on the transfer behaviors of nanoparticulate Ag and Ti along the natural aquatic food chain and underline the distinctive bioaccumulation and biomagnification behaviors of nanoparticles as opposed to their other chemical counterparts.

The presence of pesticides in water has emerged as a momentous environmental issue over the past decades. Herein, a terbium doped Ti/PbO 2 (denoted as Ti/PbO 2 –Tb) dimensionally stable Ti/PbO 2 –Tb anode has been successfully prepared by one-step electrodeposition path for electrocatalytic degradation of imidacloprid (IMD) wastewater with high efficiency. Ti/PbO 2 –Tb electrode presents higher oxygen evolution potential, lower charge transfer resistance, stronger stability, longer service lifetime and outstanding electrocatalytic activity than Ti/PbO 2 electrode. The optimum condition for IMD oxidation is obtained by analyzing the effects of some critical operating parameters including temperature, initial pH, current density and electrolyte concentration. It is proved that 70.05% of chemical oxygen demand and 76.07% of IMD are removed after 2.5 h of degradation under current density of 8 mA cm −2 , pH 9, temperature 30 °C and 7.0 g L −1 NaCl electrolyte. In addition, the electrode displays commendable energy saving property as well as favorable reusability. The degradation mechanism of IMD is proposed by analyzing the intermediates identified by LC-MS. The present research provides a feasible strategy to degrade IMD wastewater by Ti/PbO 2 –Tb electrode.

The present study focused on the preparation, characterization, and application of cerium (Ce) and neodymium (Nd) co-doped lead (PbO 2 ) electrode, i.e., Ti/SnO 2 -Sb 2 O 3 /α-PbO 2 /Ce-Nd-β-PbO 2 . The electrochemical activities of the modified electrode were investigated and compared with those of Ce-PbO 2 , Nd-PbO 2 , and pure PbO 2 electrodes. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to characterize the surface morphology, crystal structure, and elemental states of the modified electrode. The Ce and Nd co-doped PbO 2 electrode had smaller crystal particles, more compact structure, and higher activity of electrocatalysis compared with the single-doped and undoped PbO 2 electrodes. Linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were also utilized to study the electrochemical response of the modified electrodes. The results show that the prepared Ce-Nd-PbO 2 electrode has the highest O 2 evolution potential (OEP) and lowest charge transfer resistance, suggesting that it has the lower energy consumption than the other three kinds of electrodes. Electrochemical oxidation methyl orange (MO) as a model dye wastewater was studied to evaluate the potential applications of this modified electrode in environmental science. It was found that the Ce-Nd-PbO 2 electrode exhibited higher MO and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency than single-doped and pure PbO 2 electrodes.

With different oxidants (aqueous H2O2 or cumene hydroperoxide), Ti-containing silica catalysts (hierarchical TS-1, Ti-MCM-41, and Ti-HMS) were applied as catalysts for the epoxidation of methyl oleate (MO) and vegetable-derived unsaturated fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs). We found that the catalytic performances of titanium silicalites were highly dependent on oxidant types. For the epoxidation of MO over hierarchical TS-1 (HTS-1), aqueous H2O2 is a better oxidant compared with cumene hydroperoxide (CHP). Benefiting from good molecular accessibility and high activity of Ti sites, combined with high hydrophobicity, ultra-high-yield epoxides were obtained over HTS-1. In contrast, CHP was more favorable for Ti-HMS catalyst, which was beneficial to selective conversion of MO into epoxide under solvent-free conditions. The superior catalytic performance was ascribed to the high surface area and pore volume of Ti-HMS. Furthermore, the corresponding structure–catalytic performance relationships and reusability of various catalysts were discussed in consideration of the effect of oxidants.

Under the abusive conditions, it is demonstrated that the thermal stability of LiCoO 2 and the safety of LiCoO 2 /graphite batteries are improved by doping and coating Al and Ti elements into the bulk structure and surface of LiCoO 2 . The trickle charge and the differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) results show that after coating Al and Ti oxides on the doped LiCoO 2 with 2000 ppm Al, the exothermic peak shifts to a higher temperature and the exotherm decreases, resulting in the increase of the thermal stability of LiCoO 2 . In addition, compared to the LiCoO 2 without Al doping, it is also indicated that the thermal stability of LiCoO 2 can be enhanced by doping Al, the exothermic peak of the LiCoO 2 with Al doping amount of 10000 ppm is up to 250 °C. Under the abusive testing conditions including thermal shock and overcharge, the safety evaluation results of pouch polymer LiCoO 2 /graphite batteries are in good agreement with the trickle charge and DSC results. These results reveal that the thermal stability of LiCoO 2 can be used as an indicator to evaluate the safety characteristics of LiCoO 2 /graphite batteries, and especially the introduction of Al and Ti into LiCoO 2 can effectively improve the safety of LiCoO 2 /graphite batteries under the abusive conditions.
