Constructing binder-free Bi2O3@nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes aerogel cathodes to boost polyiodide conversion kinetics by Bi-N bonds

Jiajun Wan,Jiyang Tian,Qian Zhang,Jie Liu

Developing renewable green energy is one of key approaches to achieve dual carbon goals, which is supported by high-efficiency energy storage technologies. Aqueous Zn-I 2 batteries (AZIBs) are quite promising grid energy storage systems due to their intrinsic safety and low cost, but are plagued by polyiodide shuttling and sluggish conversion kinetics. To tackle the issues, a binder-free Bi 2 O 3 @N-CNTs aerogel electrode with hierarchical pore structure has been developed, featured by Bi 2 O 3 nanoparticles embedded in the N-doped CNTs matrix. Removing of polymer binder not only reduces the inactive component in the electrode but also avoids covering active sites. Notably, polyiodide affinity and catalytic capability of novel Bi 2 O 3 electrocatalyst can be enhanced significantly via the formation of Bi–N bonds, which has been demonstrated by the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and systematic electrochemical tests. The resultant AZIB demonstrates superior cycling stability, maintaining a capacity of 148.7 mA·h·g −1 after 5,000 cycles with a high capacity retention of 87.1%. Specially, the high-loading pouch cell can also deliver a stable capacity of 2 mA·h over 40 cycles with an areal loading of 10 mg·cm −2 , highlighting the practicality of the Bi 2 O 3 @N-CNTs aerogel electrode.

Synergistic enhancement between plasma Bi and MoO2@CN Schottky heterojunction for visible-light-driven degradation of antibiotics and dyes

Hongxia Zhang,Junxin Huang,Ming Zhong,Bitao Su,Ziqiang Lei

Carbon nitride-based heterojunction catalysts show broad application prospects for the degradation of wastewater pollutants (e.g. antibiotics and dyes), yet their performance remains challenges in narrow light absorption range and high carrier recombination rate. The introduction of components with matched band structures and surface plasmon resonance can mitigate these limitations. Herein, a Schottky heterojunction composed of plasma Bi and MoO 2 -incorporated carbon nitride (Bi/MoO 2 @CN) is designed and synthesized via solvothermal-calcination method. Multiple preparation parameters are optimized to achieve the reduction of Bi 2 MoO 6 (BMO) to plasma Bi metal and MoO 2 . The synergistic structural and compositional effects endow the optimal material with exceptional adsorption-photocatalytic activity, achieving 96.19% tetracycline (TC) degradation within 90 min under visible light. The first-order kinetic constant is seven times higher than CN. The catalyst also demonstrates versatility in removing diverse organic dyes. Active species trapping experiments identify holes (h + ) and superoxide radicals ( ⸱O 2 − ) as primary reactive species. Furthermore, enhanced photocatalytic mechanism is elucidated through band structure analysis, Schottky heterojunction characterization, and TC degradation pathway study.

Preparation of 2D–1D black phosphorus/Bi–BTC composites with effective electron separation for excellent visible-light photocatalytic activity

Yan Lai,Luying Chen,Qiucheng Fu,Liang Jiang,Yongjuan Chen,Jiao He,Ning Zhang,Zhiying Yan

In this study, we propose a novel composite system combining black phosphorus (BP) nanosheets with Bi-MOF to overcome the three main limitations of conventional photocatalysts, narrow photoresponse range, high carrier recombination rate, and poor stability. The unique properties of BP, characterized by their narrow bandgap, are leveraged to expand the spectral response spectrum. The heterojunction interface facilitates the directed separation of charge carriers, while the MOF skeleton provides protection against environmental degradation, thus enhancing overall stability. In the experiments, a combined hydrothermal-ultrasonic approach was employed to ensure close interfacial contact between BP and rod-like Bi–BTC, resulting in the formation of an effective heterojunction. The BP/Bi–BTC composite exhibits remarkable broad-spectrum absorption characteristics, substantially expanding the photoresponse range and effectively inhibiting carrier complexation. Concurrently, the protective Bi–BTC skeleton successfully prevents direct environmental exposure of black phosphorus, enhancing its stability. The BP/Bi–BTC composite displays exceptional photocatalytic performance in the degradation of RhB, achieving an impressive degradation efficiency of 98.7% within just 30   min of UV–visible irradiation. This performance surpasses both single-component systems and conventional catalysts. Notably, the material retains 94.1% of its initial activity even after three consecutive catalytic cycles. Characterization analysis elucidated the interfacial charge transfer and uncovered the underlying catalytic mechanism of the composite system.

Visible light-driven photoelectrocatalysis for simultaneous removal of oxytetracycline and Cu (II) based on plasmonic Bi/Bi2O3/TiO2 nanotubes

Jin Qin,Shangshi Ye,Kai Yan,Jingdong Zhang

A visible light-driven photoelectrocatalytic system was constructed based on Bi/Bi 2 O 3 /TiO 2 nanotubes (NTs) to treat wastewater containing oxytetracycline and Cu 2+ mixed pollutants. The surface morphology , crystal phase, elemental composition , light absorption property and photoelectrochemical activity of the synthesized Bi/Bi 2 O 3 /TiO 2 NTs were investigated. The composite film , Bi/Bi 2 O 3 /TiO 2 NTs was used for the photoelectrochemical removal of oxytetracycline, and it had excellent visible light photoelectrocatalytic performance. Under optimal conditions, the composite film was simultaneously used to remove coexisting oxytetracycline-Cu 2+ . The study results show that the reduction of Cu 2+ on cathode was promoted by oxytetracycline while the degradation of oxytetracycline on photoanode was slightly suppressed by Cu 2+ . Also, possible photoelectrocatalytic degradation pathways for oxytetracycline-Cu 2+ were analyzed by HPLC-MS.

Rational design of cationic ratio tuned high-performance P2/O3 bi-phase layered oxide materials for sodium-ion batteries

Yixuan Zhang,Guo-Qiang Liu,Chang Su,Danlei Qiao,Xiaojing Xu,Jiaguan Chen,Guang-Yin Liu,Qiang Sun,Lei Wen

Layered oxides are the widely investigated cathodes for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), especially their pure phases (e.g., P2, O3). In this work, we report a series of Mn-Ni-Fe based cathode materials with P2/O3 bi-phase, which possesses advantages of both P2 and O3 structures. At first, the manuscript shows a synthesis phase diagram of Na 0.83 Mn x Ni y Fe 1-x-y O 2 to pre-screen and select the P2/O3 bi-phase material Na 0.83 Mn 1/2 Ni 1/3 Fe 1/6 O 2 . Then, it is found that the cationic ratio has a significant impact on the phase formation. The structure of the materials gradually changes with the various of the Mn/Ni ratio. When the Mn/Ni ratio reaches 3/2, P2/O3 bi-phase is formed. Moreover, Fe content will influence the P2/O3 ratio in the bi-phase material. In particular, the synthesized bi-phase Na 0.83 Mn 3/6 Ni 2/6 Fe 1/6 O 2 has a P2/O3 ratio of 71/29 wt%. It delivers a high specific capacity of 136.6 mA h g −1 (at current density 20 mA g −1 ) between 2.0 and 4.0 V and 94.8% retention (at current density 100 mA g −1 ) after 100 cycles. In addition, an 85.6 mA h g −1 discharge capacity can be maintained at a superior high current density of 2000 mA g −1 . The work offers critical guidance to the rational design of the bi-phase layered cathode materials.

TiO2 Catalysts Co-Modified with Bi, F, SnO2, and SiO2 for Photocatalytic Degradation of Rhodamine B Under Simulated Sunlight

Lu Qiu,Hanliang Li,Wenyi Xu,Rongshu Zhu,Feng Ouyang

The organic pollutants discharged from industrial wastewater have caused serious harm to human health. The efficient photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants under sunlight shows promise for industrial applications and energy utilization. In this study, a modified TiO2photocatalyst doped with bismuth (Bi) and fluorine (F) and composited with SnO2and SiO2was prepared, and its performance for the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) under simulated sunlight was evaluated. Through the optimization of the doping levels of Bi and F, as well as the ratio of SnO2and SiO2to TiO2, the optimal catalyst reached degradation efficiency of 100% for RhB within 20 min under simulated sunlight, with a first-order reaction rate constant of 0.291 min−1. This value was 15, 41, 6.5, and 3.3 times higher than those of TiO2/SnO2, Bi/TiO2, Bi-TiO2/SnO2, and F/Bi-TiO2/SnO2, respectively. The active species detection showed that h+was the most crucial active species in the process. The role of Bi and F addition and SnO2-SiO2compositing was investigated by characterization. Bi formed a chemical bonding with TiO2by doping into TiO2. The absorbance intensity in the UV and visible light regions was improved by SnO2and F modification. Composite with SiO2led to a larger surface area that allowed for more RhB adsorption sites. These beneficial modifications greatly enhanced the photocatalytic activity of the catalyst.

Synergetic organic-inorganic electrochemistry active architecture of hollow Bi-based metal-organic framework microspheres assembled with terephthalic acid ligands

Aiying Lei,Guangchang Yang,Kai Pan,Wentao Liu,Chengqing Deng,Ming Fang,Xiaohui Zhang,Chunlei Tan,Huilong Dong,Feiyan Lai

Bismuth (Bi) is a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries due to its high capacity. However, challenges such as low conductivity and significant volume expansion during charge cycles restrict its practical application. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), known for their controllable structure, hybrid inorganic-organic nature, large surface area, and high porosity, offer a solution to fix up above challenges. This study designs three-dimensional porous hollow spherical nanostructured bismuth-based MOF (Bi-MOF) by coordinating Bi 3+ with terephthalic acid. The material features a functional spherical shell and internal pore structure that maintain open ion transport channels, abundant electrochemical sites, and a large contact area between electrolyte and electrode. This design accelerates ion/electron transport within the cavity, mitigating volume expansion during charge-discharge cycles and ensuring structural stability. As an anode material, Bi-MOF exhibits great electrochemical performance: retaining discharge capacities of 617.6 mAh g −1 after 1000 cycles at 1 A g −1 and 579.1 mAh g −1 after 200 cycles at 0.1 A g −1 . Coupled with LiFePO 4 cathodes, the full-battery maintains 93.1 mAh g −1 after 110 cycles at 1C. This work provides a train of thought to develop high-performance anode materials for enhanced lithium storage in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and validated the lithium storage mechanism of Bi-MOF.

Microwave-assisted synthesis of oxygen vacancy associated Bi–TiO2 nanocomposite for degradation of rhodamine B under visible light irradiation

Yuxing Sun,Zilong Zhang,Juan Yang,Xiang Wang,Huanjun Peng,Jingdong Peng

Generally, a Bi-doped TiO2 nanocomposite was synthesized by a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method to introduce Bi4Ti3O12 and an oxygen vacancy onto the pristine TiO2. The optimized composite 6Bi–TiO2 exhibits a good photocatalytic ability for degradation of rhodamine B (RhB), and the calculated reaction rate constant is about 13.7 times higher than that of pristine TiO2. After 60 minutes of light irradiation, the 6Bi–TiO2 sample achieved a degradation rate of 95% and that of the pristine TiO2 was 21%. Furthermore, the catalyst retains a good photocatalytic ability after recycling five times. The enhanced photocatalytic ability can be credited to the improved charge separation efficiency, caused by the altered band structure after the anchoring of Bi4Ti3O12, and the oxygen vacancy also plays a crucial role in the degradation process. This study offers insights into the application of a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method in the effective synthesis of Bi4Ti3O12 on TiO2 by a Bi-doping strategy.

Well-defined carbon nanoframes containing bimetal-N-C active sites as efficient bi-functional electrocatalysts for Li-O2 batteries

Liu Tie,Wang Leidanyang,Huang Tao,Yu Aishui

Design and fabrication of framework-structured porous precursors have been regarded as a prospective albeit challenging strategy to obtain bimetal/NC-enriched bifunctional elecrocatalysts. In this work, an effective bottom-up approach involving solution-based self-assembly and a post-annealing process was developed to confine (Co, Zn)-N-C active sites into N-enriched graphitic carbon nanocages. This novel architecture containing N-doped-C stabilized bimetallic nanoparticles derived from ZIF precursors was well-studied by a series of characterization and analysis techniques. Details were given that these well-dispersed (Co, Zn) nanoparticles were encapsulated into the pyridinic-N-dominated graphitic carbon nanocage with a total metal loading of approximately 7.4 at.%. This favorable hierarchical structure not only enhances the electron conductivity, but also owns a sufficient BET surface area facilitating the gas-liquid-solid triphase reaction and producing more space to store discharge products. Importantly, results infer that the interesting nanoframes manifests a satisfying ORR/OER activity and enhanced cell performance whether liquid or solid-state electrolytes are used. As such, our work rationalizes that this type of cage-shaped bimetal-N-C material is promising for high-performance Li-O 2 batteries.

Bi/Bi2Ce2O7 heterojunctions for visible-light photocatalytic nitrogen fixation: Synergistic enhancement by localized surface plasmon resonance and oxygen vacancies

Ming Wang,Xiang Sui,Xingrui Liu,Zhen Yu,Yijing Chen,Pengkun Li,Angelo Vicini,Shaowei Chen,Wenming Sun,Qiang Wang

Bi/Bi 2 Ce 2 O 7 heterojunctions produced hydrothermally in the presence of mannitol. • Photocatalytic fixation of nitrogen to ammonium up to 49 times that of Bi 2 Ce 2 O 7. • Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of in situ produced metallic Bi. • Synergy with oxygen vacancy facilitates nitrogen adsorption and activation. Metallic bismuth exhibits unique localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and persistent catalytic activity, due to effective absorption in the UV–visible region that can trigger LSPR and promote the separation of photogenerated charge carriers, leading to efficient photocatalysis. In this study, Bi/Bi 2 Ce 2 O 7 (Bi/BCO) heterojunctions are in situ constructed via hydrothermal treatment of cerium(III) chloride and bismuth(III) chloride in the presence of a calculated amount of mannitol. Among the series, Bi/BCO-2, prepared with a 4 mmol feed of mannitol, exhibits the greatest photocurrent under visible light irradiation, which is 18 times that of Bi 2 Ce 2 O 7 (BCO) prepared in the absence of mannitol. In photocatalytic nitrogen fixation, the Bi/BCO-2 sample achieves the highest ammonium generation rate of 248.4 μmol g −1  h −1 , 49 times greater than that of BCO. This is accounted for by the in situ formation of metallic Bi on BCO, where the LSPR effect, in synergy with oxygen vacancies in BCO, facilitates the adsorption and activation of nitrogen and intermediates and reduces the energy barriers of key steps in the catalytic reduction of nitrogen to ammonia. Synergistic Enhancement of Photocatalytic Nitrate Reduction Over Fe-Doped Bi/Bi2WO6 via Lewis Acidic Sites and Surface Plasmon Resonance

Yacong Yang,YaKun Qu,Zhixiong Yang,Yu Wu,Xiaoguang Zhao,Haibo Yin,Yuning Huo,Zongli Xie

Photocatalytic reduction of nitrate (NO 3 − ) to ammonia (NH 3 ) has garnered growing attention as a sustainable route for simultaneous nitrate pollution remediation and value-added ammonia synthesis under ambient conditions. However, its efficiency remains severely limited by the intrinsically high structural stability of nitrate anions and inefficient charge-carrier utilization. In this study, a Fe-doped Bi/Bi 2 WO 6 photocatalyst (H-Fe-B/BWO) is constructed via a facile hydrothermal method followed by calcination in a reducing atmosphere. The experimental results reveal that the optimized H-Fe-B/BWO exhibits significantly enhanced photocatalytic nitrate reduction performance, achieving an NH 3 production rate of 2.419 mmol g cat −1 h −1 with a high selectivity of 99.3% in the presence of ethylene glycol (EG), representing an approximately 4.5-fold improvement compared with pristine Bi 2 WO 6 . The remarkable enhancement originates from the synergistic effect between Lewis acidic sites generated by Fe dopants with unsaturated coordination environments and the surface plasmon resonance of metallic Bi, which collectively facilitates nitrate activation and improves charge-carrier separation and utilization. This work provides a rational strategy for designing efficient photocatalysts for selective NO 3 − -to-NH 3 conversion under environmentally benign conditions, contributing to sustainable nitrogen management and circular economy-driven resource recovery. Graphical The enhanced photocatalytic nitrate-to-ammonia conversion over H-Fe-B/BWO can be summarized as a cooperative process involving surface reaction chemistry and charge-carrier dynamics. Fe dopants introduced into the Bi 2 WO 6 lattice generate coordinatively unsaturated metal centers, which function as Lewis acidic sites capable of strongly interacting with nitrate anions through O-metal coordination. This interaction promotes nitrate adsorption and induces structural distortion of the NO 3 − species, thereby lowering the activation barrier for the initial N─O bond cleavage. Simultaneously, reductive calcination leads to the in situ formation of metallic Bi on the catalyst surface, which serves as a plasmonic component under visible light irradiation. The surface plasmon resonance of metallic Bi not only broadens the light-harvesting capability but also enhances local electromagnetic fields, facilitating the separation and migration of photogenerated charge carriers. As a result, photogenerated electrons are more efficiently delivered to nitrate species adsorbed at Lewis acidic sites, enabling a sustained multi-electron reduction pathway toward ammonia while suppressing competing reactions. The intimate coupling between nitrate activation at Fe-derived Lewis acidic sites and plasmon-induced charge utilization accounts for the high activity and selectivity observed over the H-Fe-B/BWO photocatalyst.
