Effect of polyethylene glycol addition on Cu-Mn-Ce-Ox/TiO2/CH catalyst in microwave catalytic combustion of toluene

Mengyao Luo,Longli Bo,Sining Huang,Haiguang Wang,Zhiyun Yang,Danjun Wang,Ying Yang,Zhe Li,Lu Wang

Adding polyethylene glycol (PEG) can lessen the shedding of coating and improve the dispersion of active particles for monolithic catalysts. In this study, a series of Cu-Mn-Ce-O x (P x )/TiO 2 (P x )/CH catalysts were prepared with different PEG molecular weights (P x , x = 200, 1000, and 2000) to explore the effect of P x addition on the structure and activity of the catalysts in microwave catalytic combustion of toluene. The research showed that P x addition (1 wt% dosage to titanium sol) to coating reduced the particle size of titanium sol and decreased the shedding rate of TiO 2 coating 0.9–0.93 %, and P x addition (3 wt% dosage to CH's water absorption) to active components further lessened the shedding rate of the catalysts 1.93–2.04 %. Under an initial toluene concentration of 1500 mg/m 3 and a gas hourly space velocity of 2260 h −1 , Cu-Mn-Ce-O x (P 1000 )/TiO 2 (P 1000 )/CH owned the highest catalytic activity and its complete removal temperature (T R100 ) and mineralization temperature (T M100 ) to toluene were 180℃ and 218℃, respectively, which were lower 33℃ and 16℃, 56℃ and 58℃ than Cu-Mn-Ce-O x /TiO 2 (P 1000 )/CH and Cu-Mn-Ce-O x /TiO 2 /CH catalysts separately, and its activity maintained steadily with toluene removal efficiencies of 99–91 % over 12 h. The improved activity is attributed to the uniform dispersion of active particles, larger specific surface area, and increased adsorbed oxygen, facilitated by pore-forming and steric-hindrance effects of P x . Electron transfer among Mn 4+ /Mn 3+ /Mn 2+ , Cu 2+ /Cu + , and Ce 4+ /Ce 3+ promoted the oxidation of toluene under microwave irradiation. Therefore, the research provides technological support for developing transition metals-based catalysts for industrial VOC waste gas treatment.

Long-term corrosion resistance of superhydrophobic Ce-Co-Al LDH composite coatings prepared on the surface of Al alloy

Xuyan Guo,Zhuangzhuang Xiong,Fuqiu Ma,Qizi Wu,Lixia Ying,Guixiang Wang

Ce-Co-Al Layered double hydroxides (LDH) coatings with WO 4 2− intercalation and 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-Perfluorodecyltrimethoxysilane (PFDTMS) film was successfully prepared through in situ growth, ion exchange and self-assembly method. In this work, we designed a novel anti-corrosion system composed of a LDH coating as an anionic nano-container, an anionic corrosion inhibitor between layers and a superhydrophobic film that plays a barrier role. The morphology, structure and composition of different samples were characterized using SEM, EDX, XRD, FT-IR, and XPS. The performance of the samples was evaluated through electrochemical, contact angle, and wear behavior testing. The results revealed that PFDTMS-WO 4 2− -LDH exhibited superhydrophobic properties and excellent anti-corrosion performance compared to Al alloy, with a corrosion current density from 1.248 × 10 −5 A·cm −2 to 1.606 × 10 −10 A·cm −2 and a static contact angle from 76.3° to 152.8° Covering the Al alloy with Ce-Co-Al LDH resulted in the friction coefficient decreased from 0.7 to 0.2, demonstrating the superior tribological performance of LDH. It was confirmed that the main reason for the significant improvement of the long-term corrosion resistance of PFDTMS-WO 4 2− -LDH was the barrier function of the PFDTMS film and the corrosion inhibition effect of the Ce 3+ and WO 4 2− . This work is of great significance for the preparation of corrosion-resistant LDH and engineering an anti-corrosion system with the surface of the material.

Dual Hydrogen Production System: Synergistic Effect of Ru and Ce Over Cu2O Nanotubes Drives Hydrogen Evolution and Formaldehyde Oxidation

Hongjie Yu,Lijun Zhang,Shaojian Jiang,Wenke Liu,Kai Deng,Ziqiang Wang,You Xu,Hongjing Wang,Liang Wang

Water splitting for hydrogen production is limited by high cell voltage and low energy conversion efficiencies due to the slow kinetic process of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Here, an electrolytic system is constructed in which the cathode and anode co-release H 2 at ultra-low input voltage using formaldehyde oxidation reaction (FOR) instead of OER. The prepared RuCe co-doped Cu 2 O nanotubes on copper foam (RuCe-Cu 2 O/CF) are used as electrode materials for the HER-FOR system. A current density of 0.8 A cm −2 is achieved at 0.55 V, and a stable hydrogen production process is realized at both the cathode and anode. Density functional theory (DFT) studies show that the synergistic effect of Ru and Ce drives: i) the d -band center of RuCe-Cu 2 O/CF away from the Fermi energy level; ii) the energy barrier for the C─H cracking of the H 2 C(OH)O * intermediate in FOR is lowered, which promotes the formation of H 2 from H * , and iii) ΔG H* tends to 0 (−0.1 eV), optimizing the reaction kinetics of HER. This work provides a new design for an efficient catalyst for dual hydrogen production systems from water splitting.

Ce/N @BC prepared based on plant metallurgy strategy: A novel activator of peroxymonosulfate for the degradation of sulfamethoxazole

Yuanxiao Jin,Jiang Yu,Jie Yu,Yuerong Wu,Siwei Deng,Yinying Jiang,Zhi Huang,Donghai Wu,Weiwei Zhu

A novel carbon catalyst was created based on plant metallurgy strategy for organic pollutants removal. Plants rich in CeO 2 NPs in water were used as carbon precursors and pyrolyzed with urea to obtain Ce/N co-doped carbon catalysts, which were used in the degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) by active peroxymonosulfate (PMS). The results showed that the Ce/N @BC/PMS system achieved to 94.5% degradation of SMX in 40 min at a rate constant of 0.0602 cm −1 . The activation center of PMS is widely dispersed Ce oxide nanocrystals, and CeO 2 NPs promote the formation of oxygen centered PFR with enhanced catalytic ability and longer half-life. In addition, N-doping facilitates the transfer of π-electrons within the sp2 carbon of biochar, increasing active sites and thus improving PMS activation efficiency. The degradation process was contributed to by both radical and non-radical activation mechanisms including 1 O 2 and direct electron transfer, with O 2 •- serving as 1 O 2 's precursor. Through the DFT calculations, LC-MS and toxicological analyses, the degradation pathway of pollutants and the toxicity changes throughout the entire degradation process were further revealed, indicating that the degradation of SMX could effectively reduce ecological toxicity.

Preparation and application of EpCAM electrochemiluminescent aptamer sensor based on porous UiO-66(Ce) loading CdTe/CdS quantum dots

Yanqing Ran,Rui Dai,Xiaoshuo Zhang,Faqiong Zhao,Baizhao Zeng

Epithelial cell adhesion molecule (EpCAM) is a transmembrane glycoprotein and its detection is important for diagnosis and therapeutic prognostic assessment of many cancers. Herein, a highly sensitive electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensor was developed for its detection. In the ECL sensor, dimercaptosuccinic acid-capped core/shell structured CdTe/CdS quantum dot (QD) was loaded on metal-organic framework material UiO-66(Ce) as electrochemical luminophore; Ti 3 C 2 /Ag composite was introduced for immobilizing EpCAM aptamer. Due to the well immobilization of QD and catalysis of UiO-66(Ce), the obtained luminophore CdTe/CdS QDs@UiO-66(Ce) displayed a strong and stable ECL signal. Furthermore, the Ti 3 C 2 /Ag could act as a co-reactant accelerator to boost the ECL signal. Thus, the resulted sensor had quite strong initial ECL signal for signal-off detection. Further experiment showed that it exhibited good linear response to EpCAM over the concentration range of 1 pg mL −1 − 10 ng mL −1 in pH 7.4 Tris buffer, with a detection limit low to 0.66 pg mL −1 . Additionally, the ECL sensor also presented high selectivity and satisfying reproducibility; its practicability was demonstrated by the successful determination of EpCAM in serum samples.

Performance of the Liquid Cadmium Cathode Assembly for the Electrodeposition of U and Ce from LiCl-KCl Molten Salt

Yanhong Jia,Hong Zhang,Ahmet Burak Çubuk,Biao Wu,Shaoqiang Guo

A mesh-type assembly and stirrer assembly were developed to improve the performance of liquid cadmium cathodes for the electrodeposition of U and Ce from LiCl-KCl molten salt at 773 K. The thermodynamic basis for electrodepositing U and Ce was established through the calculation of equilibrium potentials and cyclic voltammograms, while also examining the co-deposition of Li. Thereafter, U and Ce electrodeposition was performed by galvanostatic electrolysis, and the current efficiency was determined. It was found that both assemblies effectively hampered the growth of U dendrites and Ce-Cd dendritic alloys. However, the utilization of the mesh-type assembly resulted in a greater current efficiency for U, with the maximum deposited amount attaining 7.7 wt% U/Cd without causing U dendrites formation. In contrast, the current efficiency for Ce was enhanced after using the stirrer assembly due to an improved diffusion flux of Ce ions. Finally, cathode deposits were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction, which revealed that disrupted fine U dendrites were randomly scattered in the Cd bulk, and that the CeCd11 dendritic alloys were also damaged, leading to an increased atomic ratio of Ce to Cd at the Cd bottom.

Ni/Ce co-doping metal–organic framework catalysts with oxygen vacancy for catalytic transfer hydrodeoxygenation of lignin derivatives vanillin

Changzhou Chen,Xialin Ji,Yongzhi Xiong,Jianchun Jiang

Exploring an advanced catalytic strategy for the high value utilization of lignin derived chemicals into value-added aromatics has attracted tremendous sights for green manufacturing. In this paper, a series of bifunctional 3D rod-shaped mesoporous NiCe metal–organic framework catalysts coupling with hydrogen-donner solvent were reported for the hydrodeoxygenation of vanillin to obtain 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol. Under the optimal conditions, 3Ni-Ce/C catalyst realized the highest conversion of vanillin (>95.0 %) and selectivity of 81.4 % in the absence of additional hydrogen pressure. The characterization results indicated that the interaction of metallic Ni and CeO 2 promoted the generation of Ni-CeO 2-x interface and oxygen vacancies (Ov), which could efficiently adsorb and activate aldehyde group of vanillin to obtain reactive intermediates. And then metallic Ni sites activated the hydrogen-donner solvent to form adsorbed H atoms, which then spilled over to the adjacent Ov to stabilized reactive intermediates. Whereafter, bifunctional 3D rod-shaped mesoporous NiCe metal–organic framework catalysts achieved the hydrodeoxygenation upgrading of vanillin to obtain 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further revealed that the synergistic effect of Ni-CeO 2 and oxygen vacancies promoted the activation and dissociation of aldehyde group bond in vanillin, enhanced the ability of protonation hydrogenolysis. Additionally, 3Ni-Ce/C catalyst displayed robust activity for no less than four recycles, which provided a feasible method for the build of simultaneous utilization of lignin derivates to value-added fuels and chemicals.

Trace Ce(III) boosted acidic peroxone (O3/H2O2) process for efficient water treatment: Essential role of oxalic acid complexation

Jing Zhang,Dumeijin Gong,Zian Cheng,Chao Shan

The peroxone (O 3 /H 2 O 2 ) process has long suffered from inefficient performance for water decontamination at acidic pHs. Herein, we find the evident capability of trace Ce(III) to boost the acidic peroxone process. In contrast to the negligible degradation (∼6% in 60 min) of oxalic acid (OA) as a recalcitrant compound in the O 3 /H 2 O 2 system, efficient removal of OA (∼95 %) was achieved by introducing trace Ce(III) (0.30 µM). OA was identified as an effective ligand activating Ce(III) by forming the Ce(III)-OA complex, which served as the catalytic active component to accelerate the decomposition of O 3 and H 2 O 2 to produce •OH and promote the co-degradation of refractory pollutant atrazine and ibuprofen. The remarkable catalytic activity of trace Ce(III) for peroxone reaction resulted from the efficient interconversion of Ce(III/IV) relying on both the favorable electron transfer from the ternary Ce(III)-OA-hydroperoxo complex to O 3 and the rapid reduction of Ce(IV) back to Ce(III) mainly by H 2 O 2 . Furthermore, the catalytic performance of Ce(III) for peroxone process outperformed Fe(II), Cu(II), and Co(II). This study puts forward an effective method to extrapolate the applicability of the peroxone (O 3 /H 2 O 2 ) process to the acidic range and enlightens the development of Ce-catalyzed peroxone processes.

Z/Ce@hemin enzymes with enhanced peroxidase activity for monitoring and screening the oxidative stress models of Parkinson’s disease

Lei Li,Chen Xiuli,Long Xincheng,Tu Qiuxia,Zhao Liping,Huang Dan,Song Lingli,Wang Jiaojiao,Zhai Suzhen,Chen Xiaozhong,Zhang Chunlin

Inspired by natural enzymes, artificial enzymes have garnered significant interest due to their simplicity of production, robustness under harsh conditions, and enhanced stability. This study introduces, for the first time, a novel Z/Ce@hemin composite enzyme, constructed by anchoring hemin onto zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8)-encapsulated ceria (CeO 2 ) nanoparticles. This innovative design overcomes the challenges of hemin dimerization, enhances substrate affinity, and accelerates mass transport, leading to significantly improved peroxidase-like activity. The enzyme also demonstrates remarkable stability and resistance to environmental interference. Utilizing this Z/Ce@hemin composite, a sensitive and selective colorimetric detection system was developed for rapid and accurate quantification of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), a key oxidative stress marker. This approach was successfully applied in cellular models and Caenorhabditis elegans models of Parkinson’s disease, enabling precise monitoring of H 2 O 2 . The study provides a groundbreaking platform for oxidative stress modeling and expands possibilities in neurodegenerative disease research and therapeutic screening.

Co-P covalent interaction strengthens electron relocation in Ce-O-Co for enhanced water oxidation via lattice oxygen mechanism

Hang Yue,Sichen Huo,Xinyu Wang,Mingyi Wang,Heyuan Sun,Yanjie Chen,Ying Dai,Mingyang Liu,Jinlong Zou

Due to restrictive linear relationship between intermediates in adsorption evolution mechanism (AEM) of oxygen evolution reaction (OER), a higher overpotential must be overcome for conversion of *O to *OOH. Activating lattice oxygen mechanism (LOM) can address the AEM’s challenges by facilitating O-O coupling. However, via LOM pathway, extracting electrons from metal-oxygen (M−O) bonds usually results in structural instability. Herein, we propose an effective method to stabilize LOM-catalysts by combining cerium dioxide with cobalt phosphide (CeO 2 /CoP heterostructure). CeO 2 acts as an electron buffer to retain/provide electrons at different stages, while CoP with strong Co-P covalency enhances structural/catalytic stability in strongly-alkaline conditions. CeO 2 /CoP exhibits an OER overpotential of only 225 mV at 10 mA cm −2 . Initially, CeO 2 acquires electrons from CoP to accelerate surface reconstruction and form high-valence Co δ+ (CoOOH). Then, CoOOH acquires electrons from the 4 f -orbital of Ce through the Ce-O-Co interface, rather than from the M−O bond, thus ensuring OER stability. For water splitting, bifunctional CeO 2 /CoP-assembled electrolyzer requires a cell-voltage of only 1.54 V to achieve 10 mA cm −2 and retains 89.5 % of its activity after 72 h of cycling. It highlights that leveraging electron-buffering metal species can enhance the LOM stability, thereby enabling its application in bifunctional electrocatalysis.

Synergistic effect of Cu and Ce bimetallic over MCM-41 zeolite for enhancing the catalytic hydrolysis performance of COS

Kaixuan Yan,Xin Song,Chunliang Zhou,Junnan Liu,Rongji Cui,Panting Gao,Zhicheng Tang

The presence of sulfur-containing impurities in natural gas not only diminishes its utilization value, but also results in the emission of sulfur-containing pollutants. In this study, a Cu-Ce bimetallic-loaded MCM-41 catalyst was prepared by ammonia evaporation method for the catalytic hydrolysis of carbonyl sulfide (COS). The desulfurization efficiency of Cu 25 Ce 5 /MCM-41 can reach a 100 % COS removal rate and maintain for 3.5 h. CuO furnishes the predominant weakly acidic and weakly basic sites for the desulfurization process, which are conducive to the adsorption of COS. Meanwhile, CeOx provides a greater abundance of moderately basic sites for the desulfurization process, which help to improve the removal efficiency of COS. The incorporation of Ce into the catalyst enhances the resistance to sulfur poisoning of Cu and prolongs the lifespan of the catalyst. The incorporation of Ce is capable of transforming the strongly basic sites on the surface of Cu 25 /MCM-41 into moderately basic sites, avoiding excessive oxidation of H 2 S. Additionally, the introduction of Ce offers a degree of protection for CuO, which improves the ability of the catalyst to resist sulfur poisoning. The combined effect of Cu and Ce was found to be instrumental in enhancing the adsorption of COS and in slowing down the oxidation of H 2 S. The reduction of Cu 2+ and Ce 3+ indicated their direct participation in the oxidation of H 2 S. Firstly, COS adsorbed on the catalyst surface is converted into H 2 S and CO 2 through a catalytic hydrolysis reaction. Subsequently, H 2 S adsorbed on the catalyst surface undergoes partial oxidation to sulfide, and partial further oxidation by oxygen-containing functional groups on the surface to S, SO 3 2- , and SO 4 2- , which results in the toxic deactivation of the catalyst.
