For high-performance silicon–carbon (Si–C)-based anode materials used in high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), there is an urgent need to rationally construct a stable solid electrolyte interface (SEI) film and load a high proportion of silicon content, which is closely related to the capacity and cycling stability of the electrode. Herein, composites of Fe/Fe3C-modified carbon nanofiber–coated Si nanoparticles (Fe/Fe3C–Si@CNFs) were synthesized via a simple electrospinning method. These composites effectively overcome the volume change effect, poor interfacial compatibility and low conductivity, delivering excellent LIB performance. Tested at 2.0 A g−1, Fe/Fe3C–Si@CNFs provides a high reversible capacity of 956.5 mA h g−1 with a coulombic efficiency of more than 99.5% even after 4000 ultra-long stable cycles. The high conductivity of the Fe/Fe3C embedded in the CNF framework can promote e− transfer and boost the Li+ diffusion kinetics in the electrode. The catalytic activity of Fe/Fe3C helps to enhance the interfacial compatibility, grow a balanced stable SEI film and promote the long-cycle stability of the electrode at room temperature.

Highly sensitive and selective gas sensors hold great potential in disease diagnosis. However, the rational design of non-noble-metal-based, high-efficiency sensing materials for trace gas detection remains a crucial challenge. Herein, a chemiresistive sensor that can detect parts per billion (ppb)-level acetone was realized based on three-dimensional (3D) α-Fe2O3/ZnO nanocages, which were achieved by a simple encapsulation and calcination process. In particular, we found that Fe species play an intriguing role in the evolution from Fe-ZIF-8 to heterogeneous α-Fe2O3/ZnO nanocages. α-Fe2O3 functionalization empowered the α-Fe2O3/ZnO nanocage-based sensor with a high response of 45.25, an ultrafast response (7 s) and recovery (6 s) time toward 50 ppm of acetone, a limit of detection (LOD) of 500 ppb, and superior selectivity. Moreover, in situ Fourier transform infrared analysis allowed one to devise of an acetone sensing mechanism for dissociative acetone adsorbed on the α-Fe2O3/ZnO nanocages, involving the first oxidation of acetone to form formate and acetate complexes, followed by further oxidation to CO2 and H2O. The enhanced acetone sensing performance can be attributed to the high specific surface area, abundant oxygen vacancies, well-tuned heterojunction, and optimal acid–base property.

The degradation of carbon tetrachloride (CT) by Fe(II) activated calcium peroxide (CaO 2 ) in the presence of ethanol (CH 3 CH 2 OH, EtOH) was investigated. The results showed that CT could be completely degraded in 20 min with 3.90 mmol L −1 CaO 2 , 5.20 mmol L −1 Fe(II) and 1.30 mmol L −1 EtOH in CaO 2 /Fe(II)/EtOH system. Superoxide radical anion (O 2 •− ) and hydroxyethyl radical ( • CHCH 3 OH, HER) were demonstrated as the main radicals for CT degradation which were confirmed by scavenging tests and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) detection. The mechanism of CT degradation was mainly due to the split of C–Cl and CT degradation pathway was proposed accordingly. Further investigation suggested that the solution pH in range of 3–5 were favorable to CT degradation. Both Cl − and HCO 3 − had inhibitive effect on CT removal, while the influence of NO 3 − and SO 4 2− could be negligible. Moreover, the results of experiments performed using actual groundwater demonstrated that an adverse impact occurred on CT degradation, but this drawback could be overcome by increasing reagent dosages. In summary, CT degradation in Fe(II) activated CaO 2 system can be significantly promoted by EtOH addition, and this finding, for the first time, provides an innovative technology for degradation of the highly oxidized organic contaminants.

A novel fluorescent chemosensor bearing a rhodamine and a dansyl moiety was developed for highly selective detection of Fe 3+ based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) mechanism. Binding of Fe 3+ to the chemosensor induced spirolactam ring opening in the rhodamine moiety and subsequent off–on FRET from the dansyl energy donor to the rhodamine energy acceptor due to the spectral overlap between the emission of the dansyl moiety and the absorption of the ring opened rhodamine moiety. Job’s plot analysis indicated a 1:1 binding stoichiometry between the chemosensor and Fe 3+ . The association constant was estimated to be 2.72 × 10 3 M −1 according to the Benesi–Hildebrand method. With the feature of easy synthesis, simple structural skeleton and excellent sensing ability, the newly synthesized chemosensor provided the potential for applying as a highly selective fluorescent probe in complex samples containing various competitive metal ions and developing other metal ion chemosensors to fulfill various needs of biological and environmental field.

Catalytic oxidation is widely used in the treatment of refractory wastewater. However, catalytic oxidation has some problems such as high cost and limited production of radicals. To improve these, in this study, a new process of O 3 /H 2 O 2 /Fe-shavings which coupled catalytic ozonation and Fenton-like oxidation with Fe-shaving wastes reused, was used in the treatment of coking wastewater secondary biochemical effluent (CWSBE). The effects of the environmental conditions on the degradation of CWSBE were studied and the response surface method was used to optimise the parameters. The performances in organic pollutant removal from CWSBE were systematically analysed by a couple of methods such as gas chromatography mass spectrometry and three-dimensional fluorescence. The results showed that macromolecular organics were degraded into small molecules pollutants after treatment by the O 3 /H 2 O 2 /Fe-shavings process. At an ozone concentration of 27.5 mg/L, with the hydrogen peroxide concentration being 10.7 mmol/L, the reaction time 60 min, the initial pH value 3.6, and the pump speed 150 rpm, the COD removal degradation efficiency was 77.5%, and the effluent COD met relevant wastewater discharge standards in China (GB 16171-2012). The mechanism research showed that·OH plays an important role in the degradation of organic pollutants.

Effective modulation of spin state in spinel cobalt oxides by transition metal Fe doping is applied to enhance the chlorine evolution reaction. • Fe-Co 3 O 4 exhibits superior selectivity and stability for the chlorine evolution reaction compared with pure Co 3 O 4 . • The preferential Cl − adsorption on Fe-Co 3 O 4 was confirmed by open-circuit potential measurements and theoretical calculations. The chlorine evolution reaction (CER) is pivotal for advancing the chlor-alkali industry, which is limited by the sluggish kinetics. Transition metal catalysts offer highly tunable electronic structures, where regulating the spin state of metal centers is crucial but challenging for enhancing CER performance. Herein, Fe-doped spinel oxides (Fe-Co 3 O 4 ) were synthesized via a simple sol-gel method. The strategic incorporation of Fe ions introduces geometric confinement, which modulates octahedral distortion at the surface and thereby regulating the spin state of Co centers, ultimately optimizing CER activity and stability. Combined experimental and theoretical analyses reveal that Fe doping triggers a spin-state transition in Co ions from high-spin towards intermediate-spin or low-spin configurations. The enhanced electronic interaction between Co and Fe 3d orbitals in Fe-Co 3 O 4 leads to superior CER selectivity compared to pure Co 3 O 4 , even under unfavorable conditions such as high pH and lower Cl − concentrations. Furthermore, Fe-Co 3 O 4 nanocubes exhibit excellent durability, maintaining stable performance for over 50 h, which is significantly better than that of Co 3 O 4 . Theoretical calculations confirm that octahedral Co and Fe sites in Fe-Co 3 O 4 serve as the active centers for chloride ion release, in contrast to the tetrahedral Co sites in pristine Co 3 O 4 . The spin state modulation of Co not only facilitates chloride ion adsorption but also optimizes the adsorption energetics, elucidating the fundamental mechanism behind the enhanced CER activity. This work highlights the critical role of spin-state regulation at active sites and proposes a chitosan gel-mediated cross-linking strategy for fabricating high-performance CER catalysts. Fe-Co 3 O 4 nanocubes were successfully synthesized via a sol-gel strategy, in which transition metal Fe doping was effectively used to modulate the spin state of Co 3 O 4 in spinel to improve chlorine evolution reaction performance. Solar-driven interfacial evaporation (SDIE) is a low-energy and environmentally friendly technology for clean-water production. However, when applied to complex waters, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can readily enter the condensate. In this study, a sequential strategy involving carbonization followed by composite fabrication was used to construct a CuO@Fe 2 O 3 @CC-SA (CFCC-SA) bimetallic oxide aerogel evaporator with both mechanical stability and flexibility for efficient water evaporation and VOC degradation. Synergistic interactions between Fe and Cu enhanced both the photothermal conversion efficiency and Fenton-like catalytic activity of the material. Meanwhile, the porous aerogel network provided excellent hydrophilicity and rapid water transport, thereby promoting efficient evaporation. Under 1.0 kW m –2 irradiation, the CFCC-SA evaporator exhibited an evaporation rate of 2.06 kg·m –2 ·h –1 , corresponding to an approximately 20% increase relative to the monometallic CuO@CC-SA evaporator. For phenol, CFCC-SA achieved removal efficiencies of 98.4% in the condensate and 63.8% in the raffinate. Furthermore, CFCC-SA maintained high phenol removal performance over a broad pH range and under highly saline conditions (20 wt% NaCl). Overall, by integrating efficient water transport with synergistic bimetallic catalysis, the CFCC-SA evaporator offers a promising strategy for designing SDIE systems that simultaneously enable high-rate water evaporation and VOC removal. To mitigate interconnect corrosion in seawater-fed solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs), Mn 1.5 Co 1.5 O 4 spinel coatings were deposited on Fe-22Cr stainless steel. At 750 °C, the coated interconnects exhibited an area-specific resistance (ASR) of 31.8 mΩ cm 2 after 4835 h of oxidation in air, with a parabolic rate constant of 3.0 × 10 −5 mg 2 cm −4 h −1 . Following exposure to seawater vapor for 500 h, the ASR reached 3.36 mΩ cm 2 , with a predicted value of 9.80 mΩ cm 2 at 5000 h. These findings underscore the coating’s improved oxidation resistance under dual-atmosphere conditions. Furthermore, a three-cells stack demonstrated high stability with a low degradation rate of 1.04 × 10 −5 h −1 at 100 mA cm −2 for 100 h. Post-test analysis confirmed a crack-free structure with negligible additional resistance, indicating that the spinel coating satisfies the engineering requirements for durable, direct seawater electrolysis and provides a scalable pathway for green hydrogen production.

${\mathrm{Co}}_{2.5}{\mathrm{Fe}}_{0.5}{\mathrm{Sn}}_{2}{\mathrm{S}}_{2}$ single crystal was grown by a flux method, and its magnetocaloric effect and critical behavior were systematically investigated. Significant changes in magnetic properties and critical behavior were observed in Fe-doped ${\mathrm{Co}}_{3}{\mathrm{Sn}}_{2}{\mathrm{S}}_{2}$, compared with undoped ${\mathrm{Co}}_{3}{\mathrm{Sn}}_{2}{\mathrm{S}}_{2}$. Specifically, the magnetization of ${\mathrm{Co}}_{2.5}{\mathrm{Fe}}_{0.5}{\mathrm{Sn}}_{2}{\mathrm{S}}_{2}$ measured at a low magnetic field ($H<500$ Oe, $H\ensuremath{\parallel}c$ axis) does not show the thermal hysteresis phenomenon, whereas it was observed in ${\mathrm{Co}}_{3}{\mathrm{Sn}}_{2}{\mathrm{S}}_{2}$ near ${T}_{\mathrm{c}}$, which is characteristic of a typical second-order phase transition. Previous reports usually attribute the suppression of ferromagnetism by the substitution of Fe for Co to the decrease in the number of $3d$ electrons. Herein, according to the first-principles calculation, the magnetic moments of dopant Fe align antiparallelly to those of Co atoms, which is also the possible reason for the decrease in magnetization. The critical behavior analysis shows that the critical exponents of the Fe-doped sample around magnetic transition are very close to theoretical values of the mean-field model. Furthermore, the exchange interaction distance $J(r)\ensuremath{\approx}{r}^{\ensuremath{-}4.65}$ and the Rhodes-Wolfarth ratio (RWR) (RWR > 1) prove the long-range itinerant ferromagnetism. The hybridization between the $3d$ orbitals of Fe/Co and the orbitals of $\mathrm{Sn}\text{\ensuremath{-}}5p/\mathrm{S}\text{\ensuremath{-}}3p$ may be an important factor for long-range itinerant ferromagnetism. The zero-field cooling magnetization ($H=100$ Oe, $H\ensuremath{\parallel}\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}ab$ plane) undergoes the spin reorientation around 76 K, maybe because the magnetic moments of Fe, aligning antiparallelly to moments of Co atoms, reorient from out of plane to in plane. The critical behavior analysis shows that the first-order phase transition may occur below ${T}_{\mathrm{c}}$ in the case of the $H\ensuremath{\parallel}\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}ab$ plane.

Meltable metal–organic frameworks (MOF) are essential for the formation of MOF glasses, which have emerged as a new family of functional materials offering promising potential for applications in gas separation, luminescence, energy storage, and beyond. Herein, the synthesis of iron-based zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) crystals, specifically Fe3(Im)6(HIm)2, where Im is imidazolate, is reported. Upon the substitution of some Im linkers with a secondary ligand, 5,6-dimethylbenzimidazole (dmbIm), it was found that such substitution induces the formation of new phases: one phase exhibits meltability and subsequent glass formation, while another phase [Fe3(Im)1.56(dmbIm)4.44(HIm)2] is non-meltable. Through structural characterizations, the configuration of the tetrahedral [Fe-linkers] units was revealed to be crucial in determining the meltability of Fe-ZIF. The incorporation of a large secondary ligand hinders the occurrence of melting. This work provides an insight into how ligands affect the accessibility of the liquid state of MOFs, showing a practical strategy for designing meltable MOFs.

Ferroptosis is an iron-dependent form of regulated cell death driven by excessive lipid peroxidation and reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation. Herein, we report a novel metal-coordinated nanoparticle system (OFe-NPs) fabricated via a one-pot self-assembly between orlistat and FeCl 3 ·6 H₂O for ferroptosis-based tumor therapy. The optimized OFe-NPs exhibited uniform nanoscale size and good colloidal stability under physiological conditions. In MCF-7 breast cancer cells, OFe-NPs showed significantly enhanced cytotoxicity compared with free orlistat, which was attributed to glutathione (GSH)-responsive disassembly and intracellular release of Fe ions and orlistat. Mechanistic investigations revealed that OFe-NPs effectively induced ferroptosis, as evidenced by increased lipid peroxidation, intracellular Fe 2+ accumulation, glutathione depletion, malondialdehyde elevation, and marked downregulation of GPX4. In an MCF-7 xenograft mouse model, OFe-NPs treatment significantly suppressed tumor growth, achieving a tumor inhibition rate of 76.76% with no evident systemic toxicity. These findings demonstrate that metal-coordinated orlistat–Fe(III) nanoparticles synergistically amplify ferroptosis via simultaneous iron-mediated oxidative stress and GPX4 suppression, offering a promising strategy for cancer therapy.

The sequestration of Sr2+ remains a significant challenge in the treatment of radioactive liquid waste. In this work, we studied the synthesis and characterization of sodium titanate (NTO) and Fe-modified sodium titanate (Fe-NTO) for the removal of Sr2+ from complex aqueous environments. The introduction of Fe species was accompanied by an expanded interlayer spacing of the sodium titanate phase, which may improve Sr2+ accessibility and influence adsorption behavior. Adsorption kinetics and isotherms of Fe-NTO could be described by the pseudo-second-order model and the Langmuir equation, respectively, giving an enhanced capacity of 173.92 mg g–1 as compared to pristine NTO (151.03 mg g–1). In complex solution matrices, Fe-NTO maintained effective Sr2+ uptake in simulated seawater, although the Sr/Ca discrimination was modest. In simulated waste liquid of the thorium molten salt reactor nuclear energy system (TMSR), Fe-NTO exhibited strong Sr2+ adsorption with a high distribution coefficient of 1.47 × 105 mL g–1, while also showing strong uptake of other multivalent ions. Combined Raman, XPS, postadsorption XRD, and ICP-OES analyses support that Sr2+ sequestration involves electrostatic attraction, Na+/Sr2+ ion exchange, and weak interactions with oxygen-containing sites in the titanate structure. These findings demonstrate the potential of Fe-NTO for effective Sr2+ sequestration in complex aqueous matrices, including simulated TMSR-related waste liquid, while underscoring the need for further optimization of ion selectivity in multicomponent systems.
