Efficient alcoholysis of total saponins in D. zingiberensis C. H. Wright with novel magnetic solid acids through a cleaner approach

Mingxuan Fan,Wenxiu Jiang,Lingqian Tang,Mengqi Zhao,Qingrong Cheng,Lu Feng,Hanjun Wu,Zhiquan Pan,Hong Zhou

From the perspective of full utilization of biomass, a clean approach for the production of diosgenin from total saponins in Dioscorea zingiberensis C.H. Wright (DZW) was realized by preliminary separation and extraction. An alcoholysis approach was adopted to obtain diosgenin using a novel magnetic solid acid Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -Pr-S-Pr-SO 3 H Pr = -(CH 2 ) 3 -) as the catalyst. The prepared solid acid has been fully characterized. The single factor methodology was used to optimize the process parameters. The optimum conditions were: 0.50 g Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -Pr-S-Pr-SO 3 H, 6.0 mL ethanol, the reaction temperature 120 ℃, reaction time 7.0 h and the maximum yield of diosgenin was 24.18% which are higher than conventional hydrolysis with 1.5 M sulfuric acid indicating the high catalytic activity of the solid acids. In addition, the solid acid had good reusability. The LC-MS technique was applied to analyze the main steroidal saponins in total saponins and possible mechanisms and pathways of hydrolysis and alcoholysis processes. Alcoholysis by an as-prepared magnetic solid acid is clearly excellent in high efficiency and reusability. It is a promising strategy for the green production of diosgenin through a cleaner approach.

Effect of Synergistic Modification of Building Materials Based on α-Hemihydrate Phosphogypsum by Portland Cement/H-PDMS on Water Resistance

Guang Yang,Lei Deng,Xiaofeng Luo,Qibin Liu

Alpha-hemihydrate phosphogypsum (α-HPG) is a cementitious material obtained by dehydration of phosphogypsum (PG), a byproduct of phosphoric acid production. Poor water resistance of α-HPG has usually restricted its application in construction materials. In this study, hydroxy-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (H-PDMS) and Portland cement (PC) were used for the hydrophobic modification of α-HPG. The fluidity, setting times, compressive strength, flexural strength, ratio of compressive to flexural strength, water absorption rate, softening coefficient, pore structure, chemical information, and microstructure of the samples were measured to evaluate the modification effect of H-PDMS and PC. The results showed that H-PDMS and PC significantly improved waterproof properties of α-HPG and reduced its porosity, total pore area, and pore diameter. Specifically, PC provided the reactive group −OH that reacted with H-PDMS. Also, due to the coverage of hydrophobic −CH3 groups, PG was given an overall hydrophobicity with a contact angle of 134° (1.5% H-PDMS). H-HPG (H-PDMS- and PC-modified α-HPG) hydrophobic material can be used in building materials with waterproof requirements and achieve the comprehensive utilization of solid waste PG.

Isolation, Antibacterial, Nematicidal and Anxiolytic Activities of Essential Oil from Cinnamomum longepaniculatum (Gamble) N. Chao ex H. W. Li Leaves

Yuanyuan Zhang,Lin Zhang,Yongbin Meng,Yuangang Zu,Feng Han,Xiuhua Zhao

The utilization of natural product resources is significant for economic growth and health care. Herein, Cinnamomum longepaniculatum essential oil (CLEO) was isolated by microwave-assisted hydrodistillation (MAH). The composition of CLEO was determined by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS), and the antibacterial, nematicidal and anxiolytic activities of CLEO were evaluated. GC/MS results revealed that 33 compounds were identified, accounting for 99.87% of the total identified compounds. The major components of CLEO were monoterpenes, including β-myrcene (22.55%), eucalyptol (11.59%), α-pinene (11.56%), terpinen-4-ol (8.63%). Further research found that CLEO can inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus (MIC 7.13 mg/mL, MBC 14.25 mg/mL), Escherichia coli (MIC 14.25 mg/mL, MBC 57 mg/mL), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MIC 14.25 mg/mL, MBC 28.50 mg/mL), the zone of inhibition were 17.49 ± 0.51 mm, 13.35 ± 0.27 mm and 15.15 ± 0.31 mm, respectively. CLEO could increase cell membrane permeability and make β-galactosidase, protein and other substances leak from the cell. Importantly, CLEO was first used to kill pine wood nematodes (PWN, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus). It was found that CLEO was toxic to B. xylophilus (LC50=30.81 mg/mL), and PWN treated with CLEO rapidly died and extended. Furthermore, CLEO was used in anxiolytic for the first time. CLEO inhalation can effectively relieve anxiety-like behaviors in open-field test (OFT) and elevated plus-maze test (EPT), and restore neurotransmitters (5-HT, NE, GABA) in brain tissue to normal levels. This study provides a strategy for the industrial production of CLEO and discovers its potential role in food transportation and preservation, forest pest control, and relief of emotional disorders such as anxiety and stress, which are beneficial to health care and economic development and provides a basis for broader application of CLEO.

Functionalization of h-BN by the exfoliation and modification of carbon dots for enhancing corrosion resistance of waterborne epoxy coating

Shan Wan,Huikai Chen,Guangyi Cai,Bokai Liao,Xingpeng Guo

The amino-functionalized carbon dots (FCDs) were used as intercalators to exfoliate and modify the boron nitride for obtaining the FCDs/boron nitride nanosheets (BNNS) nanocomposite . The FCDs, BNNS and FCDs/BNNS were respectively dispersed into the waterborne epoxy (WEP) matrix to prepare the corresponding modified WEP coatings on the copper substrate through the spray coating method. Their micro/macro-morphologies, compositions, surface roughness , self-healing and corrosion resistance behaviors were comparatively researched. Electrochemical results and surface morphology observation show that WEP FCDs/BNNS coating possesses the optimal corrosion protection performance after 40 d immersion in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. And the impedance value (4.97 × 10 5  Ω cm 2 ) of WEP FCDs/BNNS coating is still about an order of magnitude higher than that of pure WEP coating (3.36 × 10 4  Ω cm 2 ). In the WEP FCDs/BNNS coating system, BNNS as physical barrier extend the diffusion path of corrosive species and block inherent defects of the coating, thus slowing down the corrosion rate; FCDs as intercalators strip BNNS enhancing its physical barrier effect. Besides, FCDs can also act as the effective corrosion inhibitors , which could adsorb on the exposed or corroded copper surface and hinder the further corrosion. Their synergistic effects of physical barrier performance from BNNS and self-healing capability from FCDs endow the WEP composite coating with outstanding corrosion resistance.

Turn air-captured CO2 with methanol into amino acid and pyruvate in an ATP/NAD(P)H-free chemoenzymatic system

Liu Jianming,Zhang Han,Xu Yingying,Meng Hao,Zeng An-Ping

The use of gaseous and air-captured CO 2 for technical biosynthesis is highly desired, but elusive so far due to several obstacles including high energy (ATP, NADPH) demand, low thermodynamic driving force and limited biosynthesis rate. Here, we present an ATP and NAD(P)H-free chemoenzymatic system for amino acid and pyruvate biosynthesis by coupling methanol with CO 2 . It relies on a re-engineered glycine cleavage system with the NAD(P)H-dependent L protein replaced by biocompatible chemical reduction of protein H with dithiothreitol. The latter provides a higher thermodynamic driving force, determines the reaction direction, and avoids protein polymerization of the rate-limiting enzyme carboxylase. Engineering of H protein to effectively release the lipoamide arm from a protected state further enhanced the system performance, achieving the synthesis of glycine, serine and pyruvate at g/L level from methanol and air-captured CO 2 . This work opens up the door for biosynthesis of amino acids and derived products from air.

Robust self-healing slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces containing CeO2@PDA/h-BN nanofillers for effective protection of magnesium alloys

Jie Yang,Wenhui Yao,Daizhi Chen,Xin Li,Jiaming Yan,Liang Wu,Young-Rae Cho,Xianhua Chen

A novel nanofiller-reinforced SLIPS is developed on AZ31 Mg alloys. • CeO 2 @PDA/h-BN nanofillers enhance the corrosion resistance and self-healing properties of coatings. • Self-healing ability is due to rapid lubricant redistribution and passive film formation. • The coating shows better long-term corrosion protection than conventional SLIPSs. Conventional slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPSs) have emerged as an effective strategy to protect Mg alloys from corrosion. However, their anti-corrosion and self-healing performances remain insufficient for long-term service. Therefore, multifunctional CeO 2 @PDA/h-BN nanofillers were incorporated into liquid lubricant to fabricate nanofiller-reinforced SLIPSs (CeO 2 @PDA/h-BN-SLIPSs). In particular, this study systematically investigated influences of nanofiller concentrations on surface morphology, hydrophobicity, and electrochemical behavior. CeO 2 @PDA/h-BN-SLIPS-8, prepared at a concentration of 8 mg/mL, displayed the lowest corrosion current density (8.22 × 10 -11 A/cm 2 ) and the highest impedance modulus (9.06 × 10 8 Ω cm 2 at 0.01 Hz). This was ascribed to the synergistic effects of high surface hydrophobicity provided by a lubricant layer, tortuous diffusion pathways provided by h-BN nanosheets, ion-exchange property of MgAl-LDH, and active corrosion inhibition of CeO 2 . In addition, scanning vibration electrode technique (SVET) analysis confirmed good self-healing behavior of CeO 2 @PDA/h-BN-SLIPS-8, arising from both rapid lubricant redistribution and formation of protective cerium-based passive films. Overall, this study provides an effective strategy for fabrication of robust anti-corrosive and self-healing SLIPSs, offering enhanced corrosion protection for Mg alloys in industry.

Promoting Cu/ZnOx Interface Formation and Zn-H-Zn Activation in Industrial CuZnAl Catalysts via ZrO2 Doping for Methanol Synthesis

Wang Kaixin,Dang Shanshan,Tong Qi,Gao Peng,Ni Xiaolu,Zhang Zhenzhou,Tu Weifeng

Although industrial Cu/ZnO/Al 2 O 3 catalysts are highly promising for methanol synthesis from CO 2 hydrogenation, identifying the nature of the surface active structure and establishing a quantitative structure-activity relationship remain elusive. Herein, through integrated qualitative, titration, and isothermal adsorption characterizations, we elucidate how Zr species promotion tailors the electronic and structural properties of Cu/ZnO x interfacial sites—the primary active sites. A substantial methanol STY of 0.813 g g cat –1 h –1 is achieved over the Cu/ZnO/Al 2 O 3 -2Zr catalyst at 503 K and 3 MPa with an H 2 /CO 2 ratio of 4 and a GHSV of 40,000 mL g cat –1 h –1 , a 23.9% leap over the pristine benchmark. Mechanistically, a linear dependence of CO 2 conversion on the density of Cu/ZnO x interfacial sites is established, which originates from the improved dispersion of both ZnO and Cu induced by moderate ZrO 2 incorporation. Electronic analyses reveal that Zr species acts as an electron donor to ZnO x , enriching its electron density. This electronic modulation facilitates H 2 dissociation and the surface Zn-H-Zn species formation even at low temperature, selectively driving the intermediate hydrogenation to methanol. In situ spectroscopies identify a sequential HCOO* → CH 3 O* hydrogenation pathway for methanol synthesis. Ultimately, this work establishes a definitive quantitative structure-activity relationship, paving a clear path for designing advanced industrial methanol catalysts.

Densification characteristics, microstructure, and mechanical properties of h-BN@Al₂O₃/WC-based cemented carbides prepared by spark plasma sintering

Tao Guo,Qiulin Niu,Lu Jing,Tao Zhong,Chenyi Zhu,Binghui Wu,Shengfeng Zhang,Shibo Guo

To improve h-BN dispersion and the local interfacial environment in WC-based cemented carbides, an h-BN@Al₂O₃ composite powder was prepared by heterogeneous nucleation and calcination, with h-BN as the designed core phase and Al₂O₃ as the designed outer-layer component. The composite powder was incorporated into WC-based cemented carbides consolidated by spark plasma sintering (SPS), and the effects of powder content and sintering temperature on phase composition, microstructure, mechanical properties, and densification characteristics were examined. The h-BN@Al₂O₃ content was closely related to WC grain size, microstructural uniformity, and porosity. At 1300 °C, the specimen containing 5 vol% h-BN@Al₂O₃ had a fine, relatively homogeneous microstructure with few visible pores; higher additions increased porosity and local particle agglomeration. For the 5 vol% composition, raising the sintering temperature from 1100 to 1400 °C increased the relative density and reduced visible porosity. At 1500 °C, local WC grain coarsening, microstructural inhomogeneity, and residual porosity increased, accompanied by lower mechanical properties. The best overall performance was obtained with 5 vol% h-BN@Al₂O₃ at 1400 °C: a relative density of 99.1 ± 0.4%, flexural strength of 871.3 ± 26 MPa, Vickers hardness of 1912.1 ± 38 HV, and fracture toughness of 9.86 ± 0.2 MPa·m 1/2 .

Defective Auδ−-Ov interfacial sites boost C-H bond activation for enhanced selective oxidation of amino alcohols to amino acids

Ying Liao,Yue Pan,Xiang Feng,Xiaobo Chen,Yibin Liu,Chaohe Yang,Hao Yan

Designing efficient active sites to facilitate the oxidation of hydroxyl group to carboxylic acid under the influence of nitrogen-containing functional groups is worth exploring, but it is rarely investigated. Herein, we construct defective Au-ZrO 2 interfacial structures by tuning the calcination temperature of ZrO 2 support to boost the oxidation of amino alcohols to amino acids. Interestingly, the modification of calcination temperature induces the escape of saturated coordination oxygen atoms in ZrO 2 support, leaving behind abundant surface oxygen vacancy (O v ). The as-formed Au δ− -O v interfacial site displays the unique synergistic adsorption effect and electron transfer ability. Specifically, the O v site voluntarily adsorbs the –NH 2 group of amino alcohol, thus ensuring that the electron-rich Au δ− nearby O v site adsorbs the hydroxyl groups and activates the C-H bond activation of NH 2 CH 2 CH 2 O* intermediates. Consequently, Au/ZrO 2 -600 catalyst with more defective Au δ− -O v interfacial sites exhibits 98.8 % product yield for the oxidation of diethanolamine to iminodiacetic acid at only 30 °C. The catalyst system is further extended to the oxidation of other amino alcohols, involving monoethanolamine and triethanolamine, to their corresponding amino acids with excellent catalytic performance.

Preferential adsorption of ethane over ethylene on a Zr-based metal–organic framework: impacts of C–H⋯N hydrogen bonding

Yaping Zhang,Daofei Lv,Jiayu Chen,Zewei Liu,Chongxiong Duan,Xin Chen,Wenbing Yuan,Hongxia Xi,Qibin Xia

The separation of ethylene/ethane mixtures using energy-efficient technologies is important but challenging. In this study, we prepared a Zr-based metal–organic framework (MOF-545) possessing a high Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area of 2265.4 m2 g−1, and investigated its adsorption performance for ethylene/ethane separation. Isotherm measurements show that MOF-545 exhibits preferential adsorption of ethane over ethylene. The mechanism underlying the selective adsorption of ethane over ethylene was revealed by the calculations of preferential adsorption sites, interaction energies and adsorption density distributions of ethane and ethylene in MOF-545 via the Metropolis Monte Carlo method. Results show that the strong C–H⋯N hydrogen bonding between ethane molecules and porphyrin rings gives rise to the selective adsorption of ethane over ethylene. Thermal, air and cycling stability tests, adsorption selectivity and adsorption enthalpy calculations, and breakthrough experiments comprehensively validate the potential of MOF-545 as an efficient ethane-selective adsorbent for ethane/ethylene separation.

Study on the Preparation of High-Temperature Resistant and Electrically Insulating h-BN Coating in Ethanol Solution by Electrophoretic Deposition

Kun Jia,Xu Meng,Wei Wang

A hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) coating of micron thickness is deposited directly on 316L stainless steel (SS316L) cathode through efficient, adjustable electrophoretic deposition (EPD) in a suspension system containing surfactant and ethanol. It is based on the mixing of h-BN with polyethyleneimine (PEI) resulting in positively charged ceramic powder making cathodic electrophoretic deposition possible. The thickness of the resulting h-BN coatings deposited on SS316L could be controlled by varying the time and the voltage of electrophoretic deposition. The deposition kinetics and mechanism have been discussed. After soaking in Al(H2PO4)3solution and high-temperature annealing, the h-BN coatings exhibited good adhesive strength. Furthermore, a novel method has been used for the evaluation of the adhesive strength to explore the appropriate experimental conditions. X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) were employed to characterize the h-BN coatings. The h-BN coatings are applied for the DC breakdown performance test and exhibit remarkable breakdown voltage and breakdown strength. Keywords:electrophoretic deposition;hexagonal boron nitride;coating;aluminum dihydrogen phosphate;electrical insulation

Prompting direct single electron transfer to produce non-radical 1O2/H* by electro-activating peroxydisulfate process with core-shell cathode

Huajing Zhou,Dongxiu Lu,Shangquan Fang,Chang Liu,Yuancai Chen,Yongyou Hu,Qijin Luo

A novel heteroatomic N, P and S co-doped core-shell material (MnFe 3 O 4 @PZS) was synthesized by a simple polycondensation hydro-thermal method, and used as the cathode to cooperate with electron-catalysis to activate persulfate (S 2 O 8 2− ) (E-MnFe 3 O 4 @PZS-PDS) for tetracycline (TTC) degradation. Radical scavenger studies demonstrated that non-radicals including atomic H* and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) rather than sulfate and hydroxyl radicals were the crucial reactive oxygen species (ROS). Electrochemical analysis indicated that Mn doping could promote electro-catalytic process via diverting pathway from four/two-electron to one-electron to generate non-radical H*/ 1 O 2 at the cathode, including one-electron oxygen reduction reaction (1e-ORR) ( O 2 → 1 O 2 ), and one-electron hydrogen reduction reaction (1e-HRR) ( H 2 O + e − → H ∗ ) , as evidenced by the lowest onset potential (0.072 V) together with electron transfer number (n = 1.65). Besides, the regeneration/reduction of Fe Ⅱ/Ⅲ /Mn Ⅱ/Ⅲ/Ⅳ and persulfate will not cause excessive consumption of electron and chemicals due to that could directly get the electron individually from the cathode and anode , and finally TTC could be completely degraded with low energy consumption (0.655 kWh m −3 ). This study provides new insights into the direct single electron activating PDS to produce non-radical H*/ 1 O 2 via core-shell catalytic MnFe 3 O 4 @PZS, and displays a promising application in wastewater treatment .
