Understanding the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) mechanism is critical for the rational design of high-performance OER electrocatalysts. Theoretically, the lattice oxygen oxidation mechanism (LOM) bypassing the inherent limitations of the traditional adsorbate evolution mechanism through direct interactions between lattice oxygen and oxygen intermediates, thereby lowering the energy barrier of alkaline OER. However, effective lattice oxygen activation remains a significant challenge. Herein, a Ni-based metal-organic framework, Ni N x F 10-x , was employed as a model system to precisely regulate the local microenvironment around the Ni active site via the push-pull effect of organic ligand side groups, thus achieving an efficient LOM pathway. Experimental results demonstrated that this electronic push-pull effect induced lattice strain and morphology variations in Ni N x F 10-x , driven to generate more unsaturated metal sites. The optimized Ni N 3 F 7 /CP exhibited excellent OER activity, achieving a low overpotential of 213 mV at 10 mA cm⁻² and long-term stability in 1.0 M KOH. In-situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, in-situ Raman, DEMS and density functional theory calculations combined to illustrate that this ligand functionalization significantly benefited the LOM pathway and OER performance by optimizing intermediate adsorption. This work provides a new perspective for developing advanced OER catalysts.

The iron-based metal–organic frameworks (Fe-MOFs) NH2-MIL-101(Fe) (MIL) has gained widespread attention as a drug carrier material in agriculture. In this study, a multifunctional nanocomposite, MIL@A@D@C, was successfully synthesized by loading the fungicide azoxystrobin (AZOX) and immunoinducer d-cellobiose (D) onto MIL, followed by surface modification with carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). The loading capacity of MIL was optimized by varying solvent conditions and the mass ratio of MIL to AZOX, revealing that ethanol as the reaction solvent and a MIL: AZOX mass ratio of 1:4 resulted in the highest loading efficiency (6.73%). MIL@A@D@C exhibited pH- and cellulase-responsive controlled release behavior. In vitro antifungal assays demonstrated that MIL@A@D@C at a low concentration of 1 ppm effectively inhibited Colletotrichum graminicola (the causal agent of maize anthracnose). Foliar application experiments further confirmed that the composite formulation achieved significant inhibition at a low dosage of 10 ppm, outperforming commercial azoxystrobin products. Plant and animal safety assessments indicated that MIL@A@D@C possessed enhanced biosafety. These findings highlight the potential of MIL@A@D@C as an environmentally friendly and highly effective nanodelivery system for crop disease management.

Effective identification of excavated leather artifacts assumes a crucial role in the subsequent restoration and protection of the artifacts, and on a deeper level, it holds significant implications for the history and culture represented by the artifacts. Existing approaches fail to address the pain points of micro-trace detection and species identification. In this work, two-dimensional transition metal carbonitrides/carbon nanotubes (MXene/CNTs) and metal organic frameworks (MOFs) were employed as electrochemical immunosensor materials to construct and utilize a sandwich-type immunosensor for the first time to detect leather artifacts. The sensor exhibits a wide linear detection range of 10 −1 –10 3 ng/mL and an extremely low detection limit of 83 pg/mL, which can fulfill the requirements of ultra-sensitive detection. In addition, the sandwich electrochemical immunosensor demonstrates excellent specificity and stability, with the redox peak current value retaining over 95 % of the original value after 10 repeats of cyclic voltammetry (CV) and more than 85 % of the original peak current after one week of differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), with an RSD of 0.767 %. The immunosensor achieves satisfactory outcomes in both qualitative and quantitative detection when analyzing leather artifacts and micro-traces, and its performance surpasses that of existing methods. Therefore, this work not only introduces novel materials for the construction of sandwich immunosensors but also provides new concepts and approaches for archaeological detection of cultural relics.

In this work, Cu-Fe bimetal-embedded carbonaceous CuFe@C materials were prepared by high-temperature pyrolysis of CuFe-MOFs precursors synthesized through a facile two-step feeding approach. Through adjusting the reaction time of each feeding step, CuFe-MOFs of uniform dispersed crystals with controlled sizes were obtained. The carbonized composites were then applied to activate persulfate (PMS) for Reactive Brilliant Red X-3B (RBRX-3B) degradation in water. The removal rate of RBRX-3B was up to 98% in 40 min in the CuFe@C 600 /PMS system, indicating that the CuFe@C 600 catalyst showed excellent sulfate radical-based oxidation (SR-AO) activity in the degradation process. The effects of PMS dosage, initial pH, RBRX-3B concentration on the degradation efficiency were investigated in detail. Based on quenching experiments, a possible mechanism for the CuFe@C 600 /PMS system was proposed. The catalyst had good reusability, in which the removal rate of RBRX-3B could attain 82% after 5 times of repeated recycling. It also showed satisfactory removal effect on other organic pollutants, i.e. Congo red, Methyl orange, Reactive blue and p-nitrophenol. This study provided a valuable strategy for the treatment of wastewater containing organic pollutants using MOFs-derived materials.

Lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) is a promising tool for rapid detection in the field of agricultural product analysis due to its advantages of cost-effectiveness and operational simplicity. In this work, Eu metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) were introduced to LFIA as a rapid detection method characterized by high stability and low interference. Key research objectives included strong fluorescence, ease of labeling, and the utilization of fluorescent probes. Eu-MOFs were synthesized in one step via the hydrothermal method, exhibiting a fluorescence lifetime of 163 μs and spherical particles with diameters ranging from 250 to 400 nm. These conditions fulfill the characteristics and requirements of LFIA. Eu-MOFs exploit the porous nature of MOFs to mitigate the drawbacks associated with complex crosslinking agents. This enables antibody proteins to be cross-linked merely upon contact, thereby simplifying the detection process. A time-resolved LFIA method was developed utilizing Eu-MOFs for the detection of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) in corn, achieving a limit of detection (LOD, IC10) of 0.149 ng/mL. The accuracy and reliability of the Eu-MOFs-LFIA method were validated through comparisons with spiked concentrations during spiking and blind sample analyses, with verification conducted using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS). Furthermore, testing of real samples demonstrated that the Eu-MOFs-LFIA method can effectively facilitate rapid detection of AFB1 in corn.

The development of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs)–based heterogeneous catalysts with both Lewis acid and Brønsted acid sites has proved to be promising and useful because they offer an economical route to synthesize environment-friendly biofuels. Here, a series of Al-based MOFs, functionalized by single -H, -NH 2 , and -NO 2 groups, are successfully synthesized and applied as supports to load phosphomolybdic acid (HPMo) through a facile one-pot hydrothermal method, by forming composites of HPMo@Al-MOFs-X (where X = -H, -NH 2 , and -NO 2 ), and it was used to esterify fatty acids into biodiesel. The structural features of the prepared hybrid materials were evaluated by various techniques, including XRD, FTIR, BET, SEM-EDS, NH 3 -TPD, Py-FTIR, TG, and XPS. The material characterization revealed that the catalytic behavior of the prepared HPMo@AlB composite is better than HPMo@AlB-NH 2 , HPMo@AlB-NO 2 , and pure AlB. The optimized conversion of oleic acid (OA) is 97.5% under the optimized reaction conditions. Moreover, the composite maintained above 90% conversion after nine cycles and demonstrated excellent reusability. This outstanding catalytic activity and stability is mainly attributed to the large specific surface area (138.4 m 2 /g), appropriate pore volume (0.47 cm 3 /g), and mesoscale pore size (17.7 nm) of HPMo@AlB composite that reduced the mass transfer resistance, high total acidity, and the synergistic effect of Lewis acid and Brønsted acid sites and ensures efficient esterification. The present research introduces an important reference for advancing high-performance MOFs-based hybrid materials to industrialize biofuels production.

How to modulate the open metal sites (OMS) for enhancing the luminescence emerges as a significant issue to explore in the exploration of high-performance metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for photoluminescence (PL) sensing and X-ray detection. Here, by efficiently extending the conjugation of the ligand, nanoscale Zr-ADIP, which has eight OMS per Zr cluster, was first synthesized and demonstrated to have enhanced PL and X-ray excited luminescence (XEL) performance. Furthermore, a modulator tuning strategy was adopted to occupy the OMS, which has been proven to be efficient for engineering the unoccupied electronic levels, promoting the relaxation of the excited electrons, and enhancing the PL efficiency. It is found that with benzoic acid as the modulator, the optimal nanoscale Zr-ADIP-BzOH exhibits superior performance with an X-ray detection limit of 0.53 μGy s–1, which is 10 times lower than the minimum X-ray dose rate requirement for medical X-ray imaging. The superior XEL performance of Zr-ADIP-BzOH has been further proven to be effective in the tentative monitoring of the morphology of a mature pearl in a clam sample by constructing a condensed film device. We expect that the proposed OMS introduction and modulator tuning strategy would offer insights for the structural design and performance enhancement of luminescent MOFs.

In this work, the reduced metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) that can function as a three-dimensional catalytic nanoreactor for copper-catalyzed azide–alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) click reaction have been fabricated for development of the immunoassay. In our design, MOFs with well-defined porosity are accessible to the substrates of CuAAC, while the substrates can diffuse in the pore channel. Moreover, the high-ordered structural alignments of MOFs are beneficial for integration of copper ions into the three-dimensional lattice. Therefore, upon exposure to reduction, the copper nodes in MOFs are transformed from CuII to CuI in situ to achieve spatiotemporal control, eliminating the primarily dissolution procedure. Furthermore, the reduced MOFs can serve as a powerful catalyst to facilitate the CuAAC click reaction, which can greatly reduce time and improve the reaction efficiency. In addition, the proposed immunoassay shows high analytical performance for hepatitis B virus surface antigen (HBsAg) quantification in the linear range of 0.03–2.0 ng mL–1 with a detection limit down to 11.2 pg mL–1. The new immunoassay has also been challenged in detection of clinical serum sample, and a good consistency can be found with the time-resolved fluorescence immunoassay (TRFIA) in clinics, signifying its promising potential in clinical diagnosis.

Fabricating an inexpensive and efficient electrocatalyst for the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in an alkaline medium is crucial for renewable energy generation. In this work, nickel foam (NF) modified with few-layer or single-layer MXene (S-MXene) was used as a substrate to prepare an independent, self-supporting composite electrode for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysis. CoFe bimetallic MOF nanosheets were grown in situ on composite substrates by electrodeposition. Compared to multilayer MXene, S-MXene has a larger specific surface area and interlayer spacing, making it an ideal material for enhancing the conductivity of the electrode or serving as a supporting matrix. As an intermediate material, S-MXene can not only reduce the charge transfer resistance of the electrode and improve the active sites but also enhance the structural stability of the electrode, significantly improving the catalytic activity and long-term electrolysis stability of the electrode. The improved CoFe NSs@S-MXene/NF composite electrode delivers a current density of 10 mA cm–2 at a low overpotential value of only 191 mV in 1.0 M KOH, along with an ultralow Tafel slope of 31 mV dec–1. Additionally, the composite electrode exhibits outstanding stability for 24 h during OER at various current densities. This work innovatively uses S-MXene as a base material and develops a highly efficient new type of OER electrode. This novel strategy can serve as a reference for the modification of other electrode materials and expand the application of MXene in the field of water splitting.

With the improvement of environmental protection requirements, rare earth separation and purification technology is developing in the direction of green and high efficiency in recent years. The treatment of low-concentration mixed rare earth wastewater has significant resource and environmental values. MOFs had extremely high adsorption capacity for metal ions, but were implicated by poor water and acid stability, making them unsuitable for engineering applications. Herein, a smaller-sized fluorinated MOF (n-KAUST-8) was first fabricated by solvent-induced regulation, and then a thin layer of polyamide (PA) was constructed on the surface (PA-n-KAUST-8) by in situ interfacial polymerization. SEM, TEM, and DLS results well demonstrated that n-KAUST-8 and PA-n-KAUST-8 exhibited much smaller particle sizes of around 400 and 100 nm, respectively, than that of KAUST-8, proving that the solvent-induced regulation was effective. Additionally, coating of the PA layer helped PA-n-KAUST-8 maintain a stable crystalline structure in water from pH range 1 to 5 for 7 days, indicating its chemical stability meets the expectation for the adsorption of rare earth ions. The adsorption capacities of n-KAUST-8 for Pr 3+ , Nd 3+ , and Sm 3+ were as high as 484.5, 455.7, and 385.1 mg g −1 respectively, indicating that nano-sized n-KAUST-8 was an effective adsorbent for separating rare earth ions in aqueous environments. In addition, 0.5 mol L −1 HCl solution was appropriate for the desorption of Nd 3+ by PA-n-KAUST-8, whose desorption rate could be higher than 80 %.

To address the sluggish kinetics and limited current density in the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), we designed and synthesized dandelion-like V-doped CoP anchored on carbon cloth (V–CoP-X) via a MOF-derived strategy involving hydrothermal growth and subsequent phosphidation. By precisely controlling the V content in the MOF precursor, we achieve tunable morphologies of V–CoP materials. Experimental analyses reveal that Lewis acid sites of V promote electron transfer and adjust the d-band centers of V–CoP. According to the results of experimental and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the V-doped CoP lowers the water dissociation energy in alkaline media and optimizes the adsorption energy for H* (ΔGH*). These synergistic effects accelerate water dissociation kinetics as well as optimize adsorption and desorption behavior of H*, leading to improved HER activity in 1 M KOH and 0.5 M H2SO4. As a result, the optimal V–CoP electrode exhibits exceptional HER performance in diverse electrolytes, requiring low overpotentials of 69, 63 and 89 mV to obtain 10 mA cm−2 as well as 212, 254 and 401 mV at 500 mA cm−2 in 1 M KOH, 1 M KOH + 0.5 M NaCl and 0.5 M H2SO4, respectively. Remarkably, V-doped CoP possesses excellent long-term stability at large current density. This work presents a high-performance HER electrocatalyst while providing fundamental insights into the role of V doping in enhancing reaction kinetics.

Discharged tetracycline (TC) seriously threatens human health and environmental safety. Herein, we developed a novel 3D flower-on-sheet structure of Zr-metal organic framework adsorbent with the assistant of N,S co-doped carbon dots as heterogeneous nucleation (UiO-67/NSC) for selective and effective removal of TC residue from contaminated water. Functional groups of UiO-67/NSC acts as a tentacle to identify TC molecules, and TC-adsorbed NSC can be separated easily by incorporating in UiO-67 structure. Hierarchical UiO-67/NSC exhibited excellent recognition performance with a wide sensitive range (0.08–20.0 mg/L) and low detection limit (0.063 mg/L) for TC. Particularly, vertically oriented 2D nanosheets in UiO-67/NSC alleviate the diffusion barrier and enhance mass transfer between adsorption sites and TC molecules, endowing it with an ability that can improve the TC adsorption capacity of parent UiO-67 to 427.35 mg/g. UiO-67/NSC with 0D structure has no significant toxic effect on human cells (HepG2 and Caco-2), which demonstrate the prepared hybrid structure is safety in practical application. Our data indicate the great potential of UiO-67/NSC as an innocuous, bifunctional, smart adsorbent for the effective detection and removal of TC residues, and we not only provide a rational design of advanced metal organic framework-based hierarchical adsorbents, but also shed light on an available method to toxic antibiotic residue recognition and water remediation.
