Role of Mo and N doping ratios in regulating the zinc storage performance of δ-MnO2: a systematic study from single to co-doping

Shaoyan Huang,Shuling Liu,Sha Fan,Rui Su,Libo Liu,Deliang Tian,Jinbao Li,Jianbo Tong

Manganese-based cathode materials are highly promising for large-scale aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) due to their high specific capacity, low cost, and environmental benignity. However, structural instability and severe Mn dissolution at the cathode/electrolyte interface during cycling lead to rapid capacity degradation, which greatly limits their practical application. To address these critical issues, this work proposes an innovative Mo/N cation–anion co-doping strategy for δ-MnO2, which differs from single Mo or N doping and achieves synergistic optimization of structural and electrochemical properties. Specifically, Mo doping effectively modulates the lattice parameters of δ-MnO2 to expand ion diffusion channels, while N doping strengthens the layered framework and suppresses Mn dissolution. Their synergistic effect significantly enhances electronic conductivity and structural robustness compared with single-doped or pristine δ-MnO2 samples. The optimized Mo0.1/N1-δ-MnO2 cathode delivers a high discharge specific capacity of 370.8 mAh g−1 at 0.2 A g−1, retaining 270.0 mAh g−1 after 200 cycles; it also delivers 140.0 mAh g−1 at a high current density of 1 A g−1 and still retains a capacity of 80.6 mAh g−1 after 800 cycles. Combined with in situ EIS, ex situ XRD, and DFT calculations, the underlying mechanism is quantitatively revealed through Mo/N co-doping induced reduction of the Zn2+ diffusion barrier, optimization of ion migration pathways, and regulation of the reversible Zn2+/H+ co-intercalation mechanism. This work provides clear mechanistic insights and establishes a reliable cation–anion co-doping design principle for high-performance Mn-based AZIB cathodes.

Role of introduced Se element and induced anion vacancies in Mo(SSe)2-x/G van der Waals heterostructure for enhanced hydrogen evolution reaction

Xianbo Yu,Feng Yan,Bo Geng,Xiaoming Bai,Chenghao Zhao,Ming Wang,Yang Zhao,Guangyu Zhao,Xitian Zhang

The Gibbs free energy of hydrogen adsorption at the edge of molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) is close to that of Pt, meaning that MoS 2 is the best candidate to replace Pt-based materials. However, easy agglomeration between layers to mask active sites, lack of catalytic activity in the basal planes, and poor electronic conductivity make MoS 2 exhibit dissatisfactory hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalytic performance. Here, we successfully construct a van der Waals heterostructure stacked alternately with Mo(SSe) 2-x and graphene (Mo(SSe) 2-x /G) to enhance its catalytic ability. The introduction of Se into MoS 2 and the thermal treatment induce the sample to generate more anion vacancies. Theoretical and experimental results demonstrate the constructed van der Waals heterostructure, the introduced Se element, and the increased anion vacancies are in favor of promoting the number of active sites and improving the electronic conductivity of the catalyst. Therefore, Mo(SSe) 2-x /G exhibits superior HER catalytic performance (the overpotentials of 137 mV and 136 mV at a current of 10 mA cm −2 ) and long-term stabilities (>90 h and 140 h at a current density of 20 mA cm −2 ) in both acidic and alkaline media.

Insights into the fundamental role of Mo doping in facilitating the activation of peroxydisulfate by iron-based catalysts: Accelerating the generation of sulfate radicals

Taozhen Li,Jingwen Pan,Xiaoning Wang,Zihao Fan,Tao Shi,Lei Wang,Baoyu Gao

Electron-rich Fe sites in iron-based catalysts provide sufficient electrons to activate peroxydisulfate (PDS) for organic pollutants degradation, whereas catalyst activity is restricted by the inert Fe(III)/Fe(II) conversion. Herein, we synthesized Fe and Mo co-doped carbon (Fe/Mo@C) catalysts to explore the effect of Mo doping on Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycling during PDS activation process. Compared to the sole Fe loaded carbon (Fe@C), the introduced Mo converted the iron to a lower valence state (Fe 0 and Fe(II)) during the catalysts preparation. Bisphenol A (BPA) was completely degraded within 10 min in Fe/Mo@C-PDS system with the degradation rate of 0.70 min −1 , which was 26 times higher than that in Fe@C-PDS system. Mechanism studies indicated that the introduction of Mo promoted the cycling of Fe(II)/Fe(III) in catalytic-oxidation system and accelerated the generation of more SO 4 •− , resulting in a significant improvement of the catalytic activity. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that Mo doping facilitated PDS adsorption onto Fe/Mo@C and accelerated the O-O breaking in PDS to produce more SO 4 •− for BPA degradation. Besides, the intermediates formed during the BPA degradation in Fe/Mo@C-PDS system exhibited lower bio-toxicity than the pristine BPA and those in Fe@C-PDS system. This work elucidates the mechanism of Mo doping to improve the catalytic activity of iron-based catalysts in sulfate-based advanced oxidation processes, providing a new strategy for solving the blockage of Fe(II)/Fe(III) cycle.

A novel noble-metal-free binary and ternary In2S3 photocatalyst with WC and “W-Mo auxiliary pairs” for highly-efficient visible-light hydrogen evolution

Xiaohui Ma,Wenjun Li,Chaojun Ren,Hongda Li,Xintong Liu,Xinyang Li,Tianyu Wang,Mei Dong,Shujing Liu,Shaowei Chen

Herein, noble-metal-free In 2 S 3 -WC and In 2 S 3 -based photocatalysts with dual cocatalysts of flower-like MoS 2 and bulk WC were synthesized through a facile solvothermal reaction. Electrochemical results indicated WC increased the interface conductance of photocatalyst and boosted the transference of photogenerated carriers. The optimal In 2 S 3 -WC show a hydrogen production rate of 128.11 μmol·h −1 ·g −1 , which is around 6 times higher than In 2 S 3 -1%Pt (20.73 μmol·h −1 ·g −1 ). The above results demonstrate commercial WC has a crucial impact of replacing precious metal and separating carriers. Morphology characterization exhibited hydrangea In 2 S 3 and flower-like MoS 2 were attached to bulk WC. Gratifyingly, photocurrent, impedance and photoluminescence results demonstrated MoS 2 further effectively separated the photogenerated carriers. Remarkably, the higher hydrogen generation rate of 390.52 μmol·h −1 ·g −1 obtained by the optimal ternary In 2 S 3 -WC-MoS 2 composite was around 3 and 18 times higher than the optimal In 2 S 3 -WC and In 2 S 3 -1% Pt. The photocatalytic results demonstrated that "W-Mo auxiliary pairs" was a great efficient synergistic cocatalyst for In 2 S 3 to increase active sites and improve e - -h + pairs separation for H 2 generation. Furthermore, a probable reaction mechanism of the enhanced photocatalytic H 2 generation was also proposed. This presented research provides an effective concept to design novel and efficient noble-metal-free photocatalyst with "W-Mo auxiliary pairs" for prominent H 2 generation activity.

In Situ Construction of Biphasic Boride Electrocatalysts on Dealloyed Bulk Ni–Mo Alloy as Self-Supporting Electrode for Water Splitting at High Current Density

Guangyao Yang,Weiliang Peng,Zhipeng Chen,Shaobo Li,Qiying Han,Renzong Hu,Bin Yuan

Nickel–molybdenum–boron (Ni–Mo–B)-based catalysts with biphasic interfaces are highly advantageous in bifunctional electrocatalytic activity in alkaline water-splitting. However, it remains an ongoing challenge to obtain porous Ni–Mo alloy substrates that provide stable adhesion to catalysts, ensuring the long-term performance of bifunctional self-supporting electrodes at a high current density. Herein, a porous Ni–Mo alloy substrate was effectively obtained by a cost-effective dealloying process on a commercial Ni–Mo alloy with high-energy crystal planes. Subsequently, the Mo2NiB2/Ni3B bifunctional catalyst was in situ synthesized on this substrate via boriding heat treatment, resulting in outstanding catalytic activity and stability. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the abundant biphasic interfaces and surface-reconstructed sites of the Mo2NiB2/Ni3B catalyst can decrease the energy barriers for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), respectively. Thus, the designed self-supporting electrodes show bifunctional catalytic activity with overpotentials of 151 mV for HER and 260 mV for OER at a current density of 10 mA cm–2. Markedly, the assembled water electrolyzer can be driven up to 10 mA cm–2 at 1.64 V and maintain catalytic activity at a high current density of 1000 mA cm–2 for 100 h. The new strategy is expected to provide a low-cost scheme for designing self-supporting bifunctional electrodes with high activity and excellent stability and contribute to the development of hydrogen energy technology.

Suppressing catalyst reconstruction in neutral electrolyte: stabilizing Co-O-Mo point-to-point connection of cobalt molybdate by tungsten doping for oxygen evolution reaction

Zhouzhou Wang,Qiancheng Zhou,Li Luo,Yaran Shi,Haoran Li,Chunchun Wang,Kesheng Lin,Chengsi Wang,Libing Zhu,Linyun Han,Zhuo Xing,Ying Yu

Neutral oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a crucial half-reaction for electrocatalytic chemical production under mild condition, but with limited development due to low activity and poor stability. Herein, a tungsten-doped cobalt molybdate (WDCMO) catalyst was synthesized for efficient and durable OER under neutral electrolyte. It is demonstrated that catalyst reconstruction is suppressed by W doping, which stabilizes the Co-O-Mo point-to-point connection in CoMoO 4 architecture and stimulates to a lower valence state of active sites over the surface phase. Thereby, the surface structure maintains to avoid compound dissolution caused by over-oxidation during OER. Meanwhile, the WDCMO catalyst promotes charge transfer and optimizes *OH intermediate adsorption, which improves reaction kinetics and intrinsic activity. Consequently, the WDCMO electrode exhibits an overpotential of 302 mV at 10 mA cm –2 in neutral electrolyte with an improvement of 182 mV compared with CoMoO 4 electrode. Furthermore, W doping significantly improves the electrode stability from 50 h to more than 320 h, with a suppressive potential attenuation from 2.82 to 0.29 mV h –1 . This work will shed new light on designing rational electrocatalysts for neutral OER.

Yingxue Du,Qichang Li,Linping Han,Pengfei Yang,Liantao Xin,Wei Jin,Weiping Xiao,Zhenjiang Li,Jinsong Wang,Zexing Wu,Lei Wang

Designing efficient and robust pH-universal electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is the key to boost the development of eco-friendly hydrogen energy. Herein, metallic Mo, Ru coupled with graphitic carbon dots (GQDs) activate inertness 1D copper-based nanowires (GQDs@ Ru, Mo-Cu 2 O/CF) by surface chemical oxidation, solvothermal and low temperature calcination . The metals of Mo, Ru favor the water-dissociation and optimize the hydrogen adsorption/desorption. In addition, GQDs owns edge effect and good conductivity, and then benefiting electron transport and active sites exposure. Therefore, the synthesized GQDs@ Ru, Mo-Cu 2 O/CF requires only 30, 39, 17 and 55 mV in alkaline, acidic, alkaline seawater and neutral to achieve 10 mA cm −2 . Moreover, the assembled electrolyzer requires 1.58 V to reach 10 mA cm −2 in alkaline seawater, and maintained well at 200 mA cm −2 for 100 h. This research opens a new avenue for designing efficient catalysts on energy-relation applications through introducing both metal and non-metal.

Investigation on hydroisomerization and hydrocracking of C15–C18 n-alkanes utilizing a hollow tubular Ni-Mo/SAPO-11 catalyst with high selectivity of jet fuel

Guanhua Xing,Siyang Liu,Qingxin Guan,Wei Li

This paper focused on the isomerization and cracking of n -alkanes to synthesize bio-jet fuel. A series of SAPO-11 supports with different Si/Al molar ratio (0.2, 0.4, 0.6) were prepared, characterized, and evaluated by the hydroisomerization on hydrodeoxygenation product of castor oil. As a result, a Ni-Mo/SAPO-11(0.4) catalyst with hollow tubular structure and moderate acidic strength exhibited optimum conversion (97.2%) and jet fuel selectivity (81.6%) in the reaction. Subsequently, Ni-Mo/SAPO-11(0.4) was selected to carry out further experiments on studying the hydroisomerization and hydrocracking of long chain n -alkanes. The results show that increasing temperature may promote hydroisomerization and hydrocracking. Temperature is more favorable for the reaction with the length of the carbon chain decreasing, no matter conversion, hydrocracking degree or isomerization tendency. The product selectivity of different n -alkanes is associated with the carbon number. In reaction to n -C 18 , Ni-Mo/SAPO(0.4) surpassed the other two catalysts in the conversion and i/n ratio at 623 K which is the optimum temperature.

Dual Mo and Se Vacancies in Dual S-Scheme Heterojunction Suppress Charge Recombination and Boost Redox Capability for Simultaneous Removal of Tetracycline and Cr(VI)

Pengfei Tian,Yunan Shen,Yuzhe Hua,Xiyu Zou,Guangmin Ren,Qingjie Guo,Hongjing Tian

Mo vacancy (V Mo ) and Se vacancy (V Se ) are doped into Bi 2 MoO 6 (BMO) and ZnSe, respectively, while they are mechanically ground and mixed to fabricate the dual S-scheme heterojunction. The lattice distortion is observed at the interface between V Mo -BMO and V Se -ZnSe/CdSe (V Se -ZCS) while XPS results confirm the construction of the dual S-scheme heterojunction V Mo -BMO/V Se -ZCS (V Mo+Se -BZCS). DFT simulation demonstrate that the doping of V Mo and V Se lead to more electrons transferring spontaneously through the heterojunction interfaces and promote the IEF strength accordingly. Both in-situ XPS and fs-TAS characterization prove the presence of a fast photoinduced charge transfer pathway from V Mo -BMO to V Se -ZnSe under LED light irradiation. V Mo and V Se function as the holes trapping center in V Mo -BMO and the electron trapping center in V Se -ZCS, respectively, thereby effectively suppressing the electron-hole recombination, which enhances the redox capability of V Mo+Se -BZCS together with the fast charge transferring. During the photocatalytic degradation experiments for the wastewater containing both tetracycline (TC) and Cr(VI), both the TC and the Cr(VI) degradation efficiency of V Mo+Se -BZCS are competitive under either LED or xenon lamp irradiation in comparison with some reported catalysts. Dual doping of V Mo and V Se were testified to amplify the bi-directional promotion effects (BPEs) between TC and Cr(VI).

Fabrication of Ti/TiO2-NTs/SnO2–Sb–Mo anode and GF/Cu–C3N4 cathode and the synergistic treatment of wastewater by using the dual electrodes

Xiangqian Ren,Lianyan Zhu,Bin Guo,Wenting Liu,Shuang Yu,Xingfu Zhou

Ti/TiO 2 NTs/SnO 2 –Sb–Mo anode was prepared by adding intermediate layers and elemental doping and GF/Cu–C 3 N 4 cathode was prepared by impregnation method. The electrode was characterized by SEM, XRD, LSV, CV, and EIS, which show that a more uniform and finer-grained surface structure with higher electrocatalytic activity can be prepared by doping and the addition of TiO 2 -NTs interlayer. In addition, the cathode demonstrate the successful loading of Cu–C 3 N 4 on graphite felts (GFs) by SEM and EDS. The electrochemical test shows the high electrochemical activity. The high activity of the two-electrode system was verified according to the hydroxyl radical test, and then the two electrodes were applied to the degradation of 50 mg/L methylene blue wastewater at the same time, and the results showed that the degradation rate was 98.09% in 20 min, and the COD removal was as high as 80.11%, which is 1.33 times and 2.83 times of the single-anode and single-cathode systems, respectively. In addition, the system could show excellent degradation performance in a wide pH range. At the same time, the energy consumption of the two-electrode system is only 110.9 KWh/Kg. Finally, after ten consecutive decolorization experiments, the decolorization rate of methylene blue and the removal rate of COD could still reach 90.5% and 68.7% in 20 min, which indicated that the dual-electrode system had excellent reusability. The study opens a door to the practical application of electrochemical treatment of wastewater.

MHY@MO@PPP inhibits ferroptosis positive feedback and delays the acute kidney injury-to-chronic kidney disease transition by remodeling the Fe2+-mTORC1-GPX4 axis

Li Chenhao,Zhang Chao,Zhang Chuanqi,Duan Shiyu,Zhang Jiali,Wang Hongyue

AKI-to-CKD progression is shaped by sustained tubular stress, ferroptosis-related iron imbalance, and oxidative injury. To target this process, we developed an MHY1485-loaded molybdenum oxide (MoOx) nanozyme coated with a pH-responsive phenylboronic acid-polyethylene glycol-phenylboronic acid (PBA-PEG-PBA) polymer (MHY@MO@PPP). We tested whether this platform could weaken the ferroptosis-associated injury loop and delay AKI-to-CKD transition through regulation of the Fe 2+ -mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1)-glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) axis. Material properties were examined by dynamic light scattering (DLS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Biological activity was assessed in erastin-induced ferroptotic human renal proximal tubular epithelial (HK-2) cells and in a C57BL/6 mouse unilateral ischemia-reperfusion injury (UIRI) model. MHY@MO@PPP showed stimulus-responsive MHY1485 release under simulated lesion-like conditions, lowered reactive oxygen species (ROS), lipid peroxidation, and free Fe 2+ , restored mitochondrial function, and improved cell survival. Mechanistic assays showed increased p-mTOR and GPX4 expression with reduced autophagy-related stress, supporting attenuation of the ferroptosis-related feedback state. Proteomic analysis and functional intervention experiments further implicated the Fe 2+ -mTORC1-GPX4 axis in the protective response. In vivo, MHY@MO@PPP improved renal function and reduced renal tissue injury and fibrosis. These findings support a nanozyme-based strategy that combines catalytic redox regulation with pathway modulation to mitigate AKI-to-CKD progression. Graphical abstract
