Ultra-broadband near-infrared (NIR) lighting sources covering NIR Ⅰ to III regions are pivotal components for NIR spectroscopy devices. However, achieving ultra-broadband and efficient emission covering the entire NIR Ⅰ to III regions remains a significant challenge. To address this, we selected Mg 7 Ga 2 GeO 12 as host material to realize ultra-broadband NIR emission. Density functional theory calculations on formation energies confirmed the feasibility of doping both Ni 2+ and Cr 3+ within Mg 7 Ga 2 GeO 12 . Band structure calculations reveal a significantly reduced band gap upon the doping of Ni 2+ . Following that, we synthesized Mg 7 Ga 2 GeO 12 :Ni 2+ through conventional solid-state-reaction method. This phosphor exhibits broadband NIR emission with a full-width-at-half-maximum of 377 nm in the range of NIR II ∼ III (1100–2100 nm). To further enhance the emission efficiency, we co-doped Mg 7 Ga 2 GeO 12 :Ni 2+ phosphor with Cr 3+ . This co-doping strategy not only dramatically enhances the Ni 2+ emission intensity, but also extends the lower limit of emission band to 600 nm. However, a spectral gap around 1150 nm remains between Cr 3+ and Ni 2+ emission centers. To bridge this spectral gap, we employed LiScSiO 4 :Cr 3+ phosphor alongside Mg 7 Ga 2 GeO 12 :Ni 2+ ,Cr 3+ phosphor to fabricate a phosphor converted LED (pc-LED) with ultra-broadband NIR emission covering entire NIR Ⅰ to III regions. By utilizing this pc-LED as the lighting source for NIR spectral detection, multiple organic functional group signals can be identified simultaneously in NIR II and III bands from 1000 to 2100 nm. The performance of such an NIR pc-LED not only confirms the application potential of Mg 7 Ga 2 GeO 12 :Ni 2+ ,Cr 3+ phosphor in non-destructive spectral analysis but also underscores the feasibility of combining two phosphors to achieve ultra-broadband NIR pc-LEDs, rendering them suitable to be lighting sources for portable spectrometers.

Near-infrared phosphor conversion light-emitting diode (NIR pc-LED) is a widely used ideal NIR light source due to its unique advantages of low cost, energy saving, compactness and long operational lifetime. However, there is currently a scarcity of appropriate phosphor for NIR light sources utilized in spectral detection, with emission peak larger than 850 nm and steady spectrum output of ultra broadband spectra. Here, a broadband Cr 3+ activated LiScSnO 4 (LSS) phosphor ( λ ex-max = 460 nm) matching the pump band of commercial blue LED chips has been developed, which shows a long wavelength NIR emission peaking at 900 nm. Cr 3+ simultaneously replace the Wyckoff site co-occupied by Sc and Sn in LSS. Due to the difference of local environment of the specific crystal field , two different wide emission bands are caused. These two broad emission bands both contribute to the broadband luminescence with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 227 nm. Benefiting from the crystallography consistent Wyckoff position occupation of Cr 3+ ions, the spectral distribution of LSS:Cr 3+ exhibit excellent stability over a wide temperature span (80–423 K). The broadband NIR pc-LED prototype based on LSS:Cr 3+ shows great potential in NIR spectrum detection, night vision imaging applications.

Thermal quenching of luminescence materials poses a major obstacle to the technological application of luminescence thermometry. It still remains challenging to attain thermally enhanced light emissions, especially in the second near-infrared window (NIR-II). Herein, an anomalous thermal dependence of NIR-II luminescence in the negative thermal expansion (NTE) Sc 2 Mo 3 O 12 :Er 3+ /Ho 3+ nanocrystals is reported. Mechanistic investigations affirm that Ho 3+ ion can work as an energy reservoir and back-transfer to Er 3+ ion with the assistance of lattice phonon at elevated temperatures. Moreover, the Ho 3+ -mediated energy feedback is strengthened by the thermal contraction between dopant ions, thereby enabling a remarkable thermal enhancement of NIR-II emission over 11-fold. The opposite thermal response of Er 3+ and Ho 3+ emissions is harnessed for NIR-II ratiometric thermometry, registering exceptional performance in a high-temperature regime ( S r = 1.71% K −1 , δT = 0.2 K at 513 K). These findings may inspire new insights for addressing the thermal quenching of NIR-II luminescence, which also raises exciting opportunities for flexible thermometry in complex settings.

Near-infrared light-emitting diodes (NIR-LEDs) are potential candidates in food composition analysis, temperature and security monitoring, biometrics, and medical applications. To realize the above objectives, the development of NIR-emitting phosphors is urgently required. Herein, a novel NIR emission is successfully achieved in Bi3+-activated XAl12O19 (X = Ba, Sr, Ca) compounds by constructing the selective site occupation of Bi3+ in Al3+ polyhedra with small coordination number. The designed phosphors exhibit broad-band NIR emission of Bi3+ from 600 to 1000 nm. Interestingly, a broad photoluminescence control from blue to red is also achieved by just changing the sintering atmosphere. The blue emission of Bi3+ should be assigned to the prior occupation in X2+ sites and the existence of oxygen vacancy. This work not only provides a novel insight to develop NIR-emitting Bi3+-activated phosphors but also helps to reveal the underlying NIR luminescence mechanism of Bi3+ in inorganic compounds.

In this paper, a method for the determination of hypochlorite by near-infrared spectroscopy was reported, which was conducted by a commercially available dye cresol violet ( CVA ) for the determination of hypochlorite (ClO − ). Probe CVA was used as fluorescent reagent to detect hypochlorite efficiently and selectively. The detection method showed high sensitivity to hypochlorite, and the detection limit was as low as 56 nM. Most importantly, the detection process was easy-handling, fast, sensitive, and could be introduced in cell imaging experiments.

Pyroptosis resulted from photodynamic therapy (PDT) plays a crucial role in triggering photoimmunotherapy (PIT). However, visible light-triggered PDT may rise phototoxicity, with low penetration into biological tissues. Crucially, the efficacy of PDT in eliciting pyroptosis remains suboptimal. To address these formidable challenges, we developed a O 2 -supplementing photosensitizer AuNCs@TAT that could efficiently induce pyroptosis upon irradiation with second near-infrared (NIR-II) light in hypoxic tumor microenvironment (TME). Replacing GSH with TAT resulted in a gold nanocluster AuNCs@TAT. The ratio of Au (I) to Au (0) shifted from 1: 0.26 in pristine AuNCs to 1: 1.21 in AuNCs@TAT, which contributed to enhanced catalytic activity of AuNCs@TAT. The superior catalase-like activity of AuNCs@TAT produced 1.9-fold higher O 2 than AuNCs. This O 2 self-supplying capability of AuNCs@TAT not only relieved hypoxic condition in TME but also significantly enhanced the efficiency of AuNCs@TAT to induce pyroptosis upon 1064 nm light irradiation. Western blotting indicated both remarkable upregulation of cleft Caspase-3 and GSDME-N, suggesting GSDME mediated pyroptosis. Further, release of pro-inflammatory cytokines and damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) triggered a strong systematic immune response and reprogrammed the immunosuppressive microenvironment into an immunostimulatory state, which led to a significant suppress of tumor metastasis in mice. Overall, this work sets the stage for future advancements in the design of NIR-II photosensitizer with O 2 -supplementing capability and therefore offers an innovative framework and solid foundation for tumor PIT.

Ginsenosides, the principal bioactive constituents of American ginseng ( Panax quinquefolius ), require precise monitoring during column chromatography to ensure product quality. Conventional assays are time-consuming and unsuited for real-time process control, particularly for low-abundance compounds. Here, we present a rapid, non-destructive near-infrared (NIR) optical sensing system coupled with an Evolutionary Attention–based Long Short-Term Memory (EA-LSTM) model to predict ginsenoside concentrations dynamically. The approach exploits the high-speed acquisition and reproducibility of NIR spectra while leveraging EA-LSTM's temporal feature extraction and adaptive attention to focus on chemically informative elution segments. Offline spectra from eight elution batches, referenced by UPLC, enabled model training and validation, with high-frequency sampling simulated to mimic industrial deployment. The system demonstrated high accuracy (R 2 = 0.9841, RPD = 7.94) and robustness under dynamic conditions (R 2 = 0.9694, RPD = 5.72, response time = 0.34 ms), highlighting its potential for real-time, non-destructive monitoring and intelligent control in natural product purification.

Multifunctional hydrogels acting as wound dressing have received extensive attention in soft tissue repair; however, it is still a challenge to develop a non-antibiotic-dependent antibacterial hydrogel that has tunable adhesion and deformation to achieve on-demand removal. Herein, an asymmetric adhesive hydrogel with near-infrared (NIR)-triggered tunable adhesion, self-deformation, and bacterial eradication is designed. The hydrogel is prepared by the crosslinking polymerization of N -isopropylacrylamide and acrylic acid, during the sedimentation of conductive PPy-PDA nanoparticles based on the polymerization of pyrrole (Py) and dopamine (DA). Due to the conversion capacity from NIR light into heat for PPy-PDA NPs, the formed temperature-sensitive hydrogel exhibits tissue adhesive as well as NIR-triggered tunable adhesion and self-deformation property, which can achieve an on-demand dressing refreshing. Systematically in vitro / in vivo antibacterial experiments indicate that the hydrogel shows excellent disinfection capability to both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. The in vivo experiments in a full-layer cutaneous wound model demonstrate that the hydrogel has a good treatment effect to promote wound healing. Overall, the asymmetric hydrogel with tunable adhesion, self-deformation, conductive, and photothermal antibacterial activity may be a promising candidate to fulfill the functions of adhesion on skin tissue, easy removing on-demand, and accelerating the wound healing process.

Rare-earth-doped luminescent materials have attracted extensive attention owing to their unique 4 f electronic configuration and optical properties. However, the research has largely remained confined to single application domains, and developing multifunctional luminescent systems and elucidating energy transfer mechanisms are essential for broadening their applicability. Herein, we select the double perovskite tungstate Ca 2 MgWO 6 as a host material, leveraging the intrinsic W-O charge transfer band to achieve efficient self-activated blue emission. The W-O charge transfer band further serves as an efficient energy transfer channel to activate the luminescence of lanthanide-based trivalent cations (Ln 3 + ), overcoming the limitation posed by mismatched excited-state energy levels among different Ln 3+ ions (i.e., Er 3+ , Ho 3+ , and Tm 3+ ). By introducing Yb 3+ as an energy sensitizer, the fluorescence intensity of Ln 3+ in visible and near-infrared regions under 980 nm excitation is significantly enhanced. Switching the excitation wavelength enables tunable photoluminescence signals, which leverage to design multimodal decodable anti-counterfeiting labels and information storage systems. Moreover, a sensitizer-mediated NIR-II ratiometric optical thermometer is constructed by means of phonon-assisted energy transfer, exhibiting a relative sensitivity of 0.52% K −1 . This work demonstrates a strategy for designing next-generation, high-performance lanthanide luminescent materials that can be employed in various sensing and photonics applications.

Persistent luminescence from lanthanide ions provides unique opportunities for information storage, optical sensing, and bio-inspired computing owing to excellent characteristics such as photothermal stabilities, tunable emission wavelengths, and long afterglow times. However, these materials suffer from insufficient near-infrared (NIR) excitation and multimodal regulation for neuromorphic applications. In this study, we developed a composite strategy that enables NIR-triggered and thermally regulated long-persistent luminescence (LPL) by coupling SrAl 2 O 4 :Eu 2+ ,Dy 3+ with NaYF 4 :Yb 3+ ,Tm 3+ . NIR-triggered synapses were achieved through radiative reabsorption between upconversion emission from NaYF 4 :Yb 3+ ,Tm 3+ and the excited state of SrAl 2 O 4 :Eu 2+ ,Dy 3+ , with a high paired-pulse facilitation (PPF) of 211% recorded when excited with 980-nm light. At the same time, LPL is modulated by thermally activated dynamics that release defect-trapped electrons. Moreover, information encryption, handwritten digit recognition, and manipulator gesture control were achieved based on artificial synapses that exploit the synergy between optical and thermal stimuli, with a recognition accuracy of up to 91.12% recorded. Moreover, a visual–tactile bimodal synapse that mimics the physiological response associated with grabbing a hot cup was developed. These findings facilitate potential multimodal synapse applications based on LPL in neuromorphic photonics, intelligent perception, and human–machine interactions.

Fe 3+ ions as near-infrared (NIR) activators are emerging as an alternative to Cr 3+ . 1–5 However, it is a challenge to develop Fe 3+ -activated NIR phosphors featuring tunable optical properties, high efficiency, and thermal stability. Herein, we present a series of near-unity internal quantum efficiency (IQE), wavelength-tunable and thermal stability NIR-emitting phosphors Sr 2− y Ca y Sc 1− x SbO 6 : x Fe 3+ (S 2− y C y S 1− x S: x Fe 3+ ). Sr 2 ScSbO 6 :1%Fe 3+ (SSS:1%Fe 3+ ) phosphor shows broadband NIR emission at 904 nm and near-unity IQE under excitation at 300 nm. Experimental and theoretical calculation results demonstrate that introduced Ca ions could increase the bandgap value and Debye temperature (Θ D ) of host from E g = 3.702 eV, Θ D = 609 K of y = 0 to E g = 3.801 eV, Θ D = 692 K of y = 2. Significantly, the resultant S 2− y C y S 1− x S:1%Fe 3+ NIR phosphors show wavelength-tunable emission from 904 to 952 nm and high IQE of 84.6%–97.5% as well as enhanced thermal stability ( I 423K / I 298K = 76.9%) of Ca 2 ScSbO 6 :1%Fe 3+ (CSS:1%Fe 3+ ) in comparison with that ( I 423K / I 298K = 70.6%) of pristine sample. We fabricated an NIR light-emitting diodes (LED) device by using CSS:1%Fe 3+ NIR phosphors with ultraviolet LED chip and demonstrated its potential applications in anticounterfeiting, information encryption, and night vision.

Multidrug-resistant bacterial pneumonia (MDR-BP), particularly involving biofilm eradication, presents therapeutic challenges. While reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated chemodynamic therapy offers antibacterial potential, limitations in biocatalytic performance and nanotherapeutic efficacy hinder traditional approaches. We developed nitrogen-doped ruthenium single-atom catalysts (Ru-N-SACs) as a dual-functional nanotherapeutic platform. This nanozyme exhibits peroxidase-mimicking catalytic activity, generating ROS selectively. Near-infrared laser stimulation further enhances its activity and provides photothermal disruption of biofilms. The resulting synergistic action achieves complete biofilm eradication and improves survival in pneumonia models. Comprehensive multi-omics analyses elucidated the therapeutic effectiveness and regulatory mechanisms of Ru-N-SACs against MDR-BP pathogenesis. This work demonstrates a paradigm combining catalytic ROS generation and photothermal therapy for managing deep-tissue infections. It advances the design of precision-engineered nanozymes within antimicrobial nanomedicine, addressing the critical need for innovative strategies against MDR pathogens.
