Superhydrophobic surfaces with long-lasting stability through simple fabrication procedures have attracted considerable attention. The application of existing superhydrophobic surfaces is limited, considering the use of toxic ingredients and their poor longevity. Herein, we report the novel fabrication of durable, fluorine-free, and self-healing superhydrophobic cotton textiles by utilising boric acid (H 3 BO 3 ) as a cross-linker to silica nanoparticles and poly (vinyl alcohol) followed by polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) modification through a simple dip-dry coating technique. Boric acid possessed a noticeable micro/nanoporous structure with silica and poly (vinyl alcohol) via cross-linking on the surface, which showed excellent superhydrophobicity, and PDMS modification on the textile surface created a lower surface energy than unmodified textile. The fabricated surface exhibited a maximum water-contact angle of 156.84°±1.5° with a small rolling angle of 1.8°±0.3°, presenting outstanding superhydrophobicity for cotton textiles. The modified cotton textile surface had excellent durability against mechanical and chemical disturbances. The experimental findings indicated that the fabricated textile had adequate mechanical strength that could withstand sandpaper abrasion for 120 cycles, tape-peeling repetition 60 times, knife scratching for 20 cycles and washing by surfactant solutions for 80 cycles. Additionally, the modified textiles exhibited oil–water separation and self-healing abilities, therefore showing multifunctional properties that have potential in a wide range of cotton textile surface treatments.

Two important issues in skin tissue engineering are the vascularization and regeneration of the dermis. Basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) is known to promote angiogenesis and accelerate wound healing. Direct delivery of bFGF to the wound area, however, would lead to a loss of bioactivity. To this end, bFGF-loaded alginate microspheres (Ms) were fabricated and incorporated into carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS)–poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) to form a composite hydrogel. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results indicated that the incorporation of Ms does not significantly affect the inner structure of CMCS–PVA. In an in vitro study, the release of bFGF from Ms–CMCS–PVA in a sustained manner retained higher bioactivity over a 2-week period. Full-thickness burn wounds were created in the dorsal area of rats for in vivo evaluation of skin regeneration treated with CMCS–PVA hydrogel, with and without bFGF. Compared with the control, CMCS–PVA and bFGF–CMCS–PVA groups, the bFGF/Ms–CMCS–PVA group revealed significantly faster wound recovery rates, with re-epithelialization and regeneration of the dermis. Moreover, the bFGF/Ms–CMCS–PVA group had the highest density of newly formed and mature blood vessels during the 2 mweek treatment period. The ability of the bFGF/Ms–CMCS–PVA hydrogel to accelerate wound healing in a full-thickness burn model suggests its potential for use in dermal tissue regeneration. Novel nanocomposite hydrogels composed of hyaluronan (HA), poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and silver nanoparticles were prepared by several cycles of freezing and thawing. The nanocomposite was then characterised using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The complex hydrogels consisted of semi-interpenetrating network structures, with PVA microcrystallines as junction zones. By increasing the HA content, the crystallinity and melting temperature of the complex hydrogels decreased, whereas the glass transition temperatures of these materials increased because of the steric hindrance of HA and the occurrence of intermolecular interactions through hydrogen bonding between HA and PVA in the complex hydrogels. Swelling studies showed that in comparison with the swelling properties of the cryogels from PVA alone, those of the complex hydrogels can be significantly improved and presented in a pH-sensitive manner. In addition, silver nanoparticles were synthesised through UV-initiated photoreduction with HA functioning as a reducing agent and stabiliser. The silver nanoparticles were then incorporated in situ into the HA/PVA complex hydrogel matrix. The size and morphology of the as-prepared Ag nanoparticles were investigated through ultraviolet–visible light spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, XRD and thermogravimetric analysis. The experimental results indicated that silver nanoparticles 20–50 nm in size were uniformly dispersed in the hydrogel matrix. The antibacterial effects of the HA/PVA/Ag nanocomposite hydrogel against Escherichia coli were evaluated. The results show that this nanocomposite hydrogel possesses high antibacterial property and has a potential application as a wound dressing material.

The blended membranes of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and chitosan (CS) (PVA-CS) were prepared for pervaporation dehydration of a binary system of n -butyl acetate/water and a ternary mixture of n -butyl acetate/ n -butanol/water. Membranes were characterized by FTIR, DSC and XRD to investigate the intermolecular interactions, the blending compatibility and the effects of blending on crystallinity. Tensile strengths were measured to determine the influence of blending ratios on the membrane’s mechanical properties. The membrane’s degree of swelling in water dropped significantly with increasing CS fraction. The results agreed well with the calculation of the solubility parameter. Separation factor and permeation flux increased when the temperature was raised for both the binary and ternary pervaporation systems. An optimal separation factor of 27,000 with a total flux of 402 g·m −2 ·h −1 was obtained using the blend membrane containing 25 wt% CS at 40 °C for the binary system. For the ternary system, the maximum separation factor and total flux were obtained for blend membranes at 75 wt% and 50 wt% CS content, respectively.

There has been extensive research on conductive hydrogels, however, the current lack of practical applications is a significant issue. The crucial challenge lies in effectively integrating conductive hydrogels into practical use. Here, a uniform multifunctional hydrogel was facilely fabricated by integrating nitrogen-doped carbon capsules (N-Cc) and g-C 3 N 4 to PEO/PVA hydrogels (VECGNC). The introduction of a double network structure through carbon material endows the VECGNC hydrogel with exceptional mechanical strength (stress: 47.2 kPa; strain: 318 %) and high electrical conductivity (0.025 S cm −1 ). And it showed a good linear relationship between the temperature and pressure difference. Taking advantage of these properties, a logic gate circuit capable of sensing external pressure changes and effecting corresponding adjustments was constructed. Moreover, the strain sensitivity hydrogel designed in this work is capable of intelligent new traffic lights. Our work offers novel insights and methodologies for the utilization of multifunctional hydrogels in multi-scenario temperature and strains ensing applications.

The filtration of oil aerosols is crucial for safeguarding human health and protecting industrial machinery. While most research focuses on achieving high efficiency and low air resistance, limited studies have investigated filters that effectively combine these attributes with easy cleaning, primarily due to challenges associated with oil adhesion and the low mechanical strength of filter media. This study introduces a novel nanofibrous membrane (NFM) composed of fluorinated PVA/SiO 2 fibers, which exhibits cleanability alongside with high filtration efficiency. The F-PVA/SiO 2 NFM features a fibrous structure with periodic SiO 2 nano-protrusions on the PVA nanofibers, resembling the Chinese sweet Tanghulu . This design significantly enhances the surface roughness of the fibers. Moreover, the hydroxyl-rich PVA/SiO 2 matrix, in conjunction with the rough fiber surface, forms a durable amphiphobic coating after fluorination treatment. This coating retains its amphiphobic properties for over a year under ambient conditions while resisting swelling caused by organic solvents. Consequently, this design achieves an impressive filtration quality factor of 0.0190 Pa −1 , surpasses 95.58 % removal efficiency, and possessed an oil load capacity of 12.8 g m −2 . Furthermore, the filter can be easily regenerated through simple spray cleaning procedures without compromising its original filtration efficiency or experiencing significant pressure drop changes. Throughout ten consecutive filtration and cleaning cycles, the NFM consistently maintained its original filtration efficiency, with a 99 % restoration of pressure drop after each cycle. This F-PVA/SiO 2 NFM presents a practical solution for efficient oil aerosol filtration while offering excellent reusability and durability.

In this study, a high-performance and swell-resistant triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) has been proposed, specifically designed for high-humidity environments to meet the challenges of swelling problem and performance degradation. The composite film was fabricated by combining self-aggregation crosslinking reactions for polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) through ammonium persulfate (APS) initiations and interface physicochemical structure regulations for polyacrylonitrile (PAN) support layer. The treatment of PAN films with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and tannic acid (TA) significantly enhances their electron affinity and electrical properties. Furthermore, the film exhibits superior swelling resistance, mechanical strength, and triboelectric characteristics. Owing to higher positive surface potential and optimized interface modulation, the constructed TENG using 8 wt% PVA initiated by 1.25 wt% APS spined on modified PAN support layer (PA 8–1.25 NTP-TENG) presents excellent stability and performance, with the I SC density reaching 180.9 mA·m −2 , voltage of 1396 V, and power density of 89.66 W·m −2 . Practically, the TENG successfully powered electronic devices and generated signals through human movements, harvesting biomechanical energy. Additionally, a self-powered ethanol pervaporation dehydration detector was developed, showcasing excellent permeability selectivity and stable performance in high humidity and elevated ethanol concentrations. Notably, in the dehydration process, the concentration of ethanol after membrane treatment achieves exceeding 99.99 %. This work introduces a novel strategy for enhancing the electrical properties of TENGs, providing valuable insights into material interface regulation mechanisms during energy conversion.

Flexible ammonia (NH3) gas sensors have gained increasing attention for their potential in medical diagnostics and health monitoring, as they serve as a biomarker for kidney disease. Utilizing the pre-designable and porous properties of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) is an innovative way to address the demand for high-performance NH3sensing. However, COF particles frequently encounter aggregation, low conductivity, and mechanical rigidity, reducing the effectiveness of portable NH3detection. To overcome these challenges, we propose a practical approach using polyvinyl alcohol-carrageenan (κPVA) as a template for in the situ growth of two-dimensional COF film and particles to produce a flexible hydrogel gas sensor (COF/κPVA). The synergistic effect of COF and κPVA enhances the gas sensing, water retention, and mechanical properties. The COF/κPVA hydrogel shows a 54.4% response to 1 ppm NH3with a root mean square error of less than 5% and full recovery compared to the low response and no recovery of bare κPVA. Owing to the dual effects of the COF film and the particles anchoring the water molecules, the COF/κPVA hydrogel remained stable after 70 h in atmospheric conditions, in contrast, the bare κPVA hydrogel was completely dehydrated. Our work might pave the way for highly sensitive hydrogel gas sensors, which have intriguing applications in flexible electronic devices for gas sensing.

Organic contaminant has detrimental influence on aquatic life and humankind through water circulation. In this work, Ag coated melamine sponge (Ag-P@MS) has been successfully prepared by facile, one-step and in-situ deposition method with the assistance of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). Methylene blue and congo red as the representative of dyes and 4-nitrophenol as the typical of nitrophenol contaminants are employed to evaluate the catalytic performance of the as-prepared Ag-P@MS. The as-prepared MS composite (Ag-P@MS(6.5)) in the nearly neutral condition demonstrates better catalytic property than that of Ag-P@MS(10.5), and the apparent rate constants for Ag-P@MS(6.5) degradation of MB, CR and 4-NP are 0.01356 s −1 , 0.00886 s −1 and 0.00465 s −1 , respectively. The present work presents a novel approach for the preparation of Ag carrying monolith catalysts based melamine sponge and the potential practical application prospect due to their excellent catalytic performance for organic pollutant.

The proton exchange membrane (PEM) constitutes a pivotal component of the fuel cell, with its property frequently serving as a determining factor in the overall performance of the fuel cell. In this study, a composite membrane with excellent comprehensive properties for direct methanol fuel cells (DMFC) is obtained by doping a highly conductive proton-ionic liquid (PIL) into a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) crosslinked membrane. The physicochemical properties of three PILs with different ΔpK a are characterized, and the relationship between their structure and properties is researched and the proton conduction mechanism of different PILs is clarified. Subsequently, the PIL exhibiting the optimal comprehensive performance is doped into the PVA crosslinking system, thereby introducing further proton conduction groups into the original system and enhancing the proton conductivity of PEMs. When the content of the PIL was 20 wt%, the CPVA/IL-20 composite membrane exhibits the most favorable comprehensive performance, with a proton conductivity of 53.5 mS/cm at 80 °C, and a peak power density of 42.7 mW/cm 2 at 80 °C with 100 % RH, which is 1.7 times that of CPVA without PIL. The methanol permeability and selectivity at room temperature are 6.5 × 10 −7 cm 2 s −1 and 3.75 × 10 4 S s cm −3 , respectively.

Efficient utilization of clean solar thermal energy remains for addressing the global energy challenges. Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene exhibits exceptional thermal conductivity and mechanical strength, however, its incorporation into polymer composites is hindered by weak interfacial interactions and poor dispersion. This study presents a covalent engineering strategy to construct MXene/carbon nanotube (CNT) hybrid fillers through esterification crosslinking, where polyacrylic acid (PAA) bridges hydroxyl-rich polydopamine-coated CNTs and MXene nanosheets. The resulting polyvinyl alcohol/MXene/CNTs (PMC) composite films fabricated through solution casting exhibit a unique gradient deposition architecture. The optimized PMC-10 film has excellent mechanical properties with a tensile strength of 216 MPa and a Young's modulus of 3.07 GPa, which are 2.8 and 5.1 times higher than those of the original PVA, respectively. Meanwhile, the composite simultaneously exhibits dual-mode thermal regulation capabilities: daytime photothermal heating enhancement of 45.43 °C and nighttime radiative cooling reduction of 7.47 °C. This diurnal thermal gradient enables continuous 24-h thermoelectric generation. Furthermore, the PMC films display rapid ice-melting capabilities, efficient heat dissipation, and improved flame retardancy. This work establishes a paradigm for designing 1D/2D covalent hybrid fillers in polymer composites that simultaneously enhance mechanical properties and multifunctional performance, significantly expanding their potential for sustainable energy applications.
