Synthesis of Ultrafine Pt/Pd Bimetallic Nanoparticles and Their Decoration on MWCNTs for Hydrogen Evolution

Mingshu Xiao,Xiaocai Liang,Weiwei Li,Yang Yang,Yuqing Miao

Here, the ultrafine Pt/Pd bimetallic nanoparticles (Pt/Pd NPs) were synthesized and decorated on the multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) for hydrogen evolution. Pt/Pd NPs were synthesized through the reduction of their metal salt mixture with tert-butylamine as reductant and polyvinylpyrrolidone as protectant. Under the observation of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), the well dispersed Pt/Pd NPs exhibit the ultrafine size of about 13 nm diameter with the good crystallinity corresponding to the (111) planes of face-centered cubic (fcc) Pt and the (200) planes of fcc Pd. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) also shows the dispersion and anchor of Pt/Pd NPs in the matrix of MWCNTs. Electrochemical study confirms the good electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution of Pt/Pd-MWCNT in 0.5 M H2SO4, exhibiting a potential application in the future for hydrogen based energy transformation and storage.

Efficient synthesis of Pt–Co nanowires as cathode catalysts for proton exchange membrane fuel cells

Zhikun Liu,Yanhong Yin,Daijun Yang,Cunman Zhang,Pingwen Ming,Bing Li,Shuting Yang

A simple and efficient method was used to prepare highly active and durable carbon-supported ultrathin Pt–Co nanowires (NWs) as oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts for the cathode in a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). Chromium hexacarbonyl plays a significant role in making Pt and Co form an alloyed NW, which acts as both a reducing agent and a structure directing agent. The nanocrystal exhibits a uniform nanowire morphology with a diameter of 2 nm and a length of 30 nm. In half cell tests, the Pt–Co NWs/C catalyst has a mass activity of 291.4 mA mgPt−1, which is significantly better than commercial Pt/C catalysts with 85.5 mA mgPt−1. And after the accelerated durability test (ADT), Pt–Co NWs/C shows an electrochemically active surface area (ECSA) loss of 19.1% while the loss in the commercial catalyst is 41.8%. Also, the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) was prepared using Pt–Co NWs/C as the cathode catalyst, resulting in a maximum power density of 952 mW cm−2, which is higher than that of Pt/C. These results indicate that the one-dimensional structure of the catalyst prepared herein is favorable to improve the activity and durability, and the application of the catalyst in the MEA is also realized.

Enhanced electrocatalytic performance of hydroxyl‑grafted PProDOT:PSS/YRFC/Pt composites for direct alcohol fuel cells

Nurbiye Sawut,Ruxangul Jamal,Tursun Abdiryim,Ahmat Ali,Ayigul Kadir,Zulpikar Helil,Mariyam Niyaz,Yajun Liu

It is important to select an appropriate supporting matrix, which can probably improve the electro-catalytic activity of Pt and reduce the Pt loading. In this paper, a composite (PProDOT-2MeOH:PSS/YRFC/Pt) comprising hydroxyl‑grafted poly(3,4-propylenedioxy thiophene):polystyrene sulfonate(PProDOT-2MeOH:PSS), resorcinol-formaldehyde yolk-shell carbon sphere (YRFC) and Pt nanoparticles is fabricated as electrocatalyst for methanol and ethanol electrooxidation . The PProDOT-2MeOH:PSS is uniformly coated on the YRFC, which enhances the conjugation degree of polymer and the dispersion of Pt nanoparticles to facilitate the mass transfer during catalytic reactions . PProDOT-2MeOH:PSS/YRFC/Pt has a larger electrochemical active surface area (61.02 m 2 g −1 ) than commercial 20 wt% Pt/C (17.1 m 2 g −1 ), which is resulted from anchoring sites of S atom in PProDOT-2MeOH:PSS/YRFC. The composite displays excellent electrochemical performance for ethanol and methanol oxidation with the mass activity of 1077 mA mgPt −1 and 689 mA mgPt −1 , respectively. The composite had satisfactory anti CO tolerance from the contribution of the high conductivity of PProDOT-2MeOH:PSS and YRFC. The composite also exhibits favorable cyclic stability, due to noncovalent bonding between constituents and the yolk-shell structure. These results indicate that PProDOT-2MeOH:PSS/YRFC/Pt is a promising catalyst for direct fuel cell applications .

Peroxidase-like Au@Pt nanozyme as an integrated nanosensor for Ag+ detection by LSPR spectroscopy

Yueyue Tian,Yancao Chen,Mei Chen,Zhi-Ling Song,Bin Xiong,Xiao-Bing Zhang

Here we report the peroxidase-like [email protected] nanozyme as an integrated nanosensor for selective detection of silver ions (Ag + ), where the nanozyme plays the roles as both the signal trigger and reporter simultaneously. This method relies on two critical chemical reactions, including (1) the unique inhibitory effect of Ag + on the nanozyme triggered H 2 O 2 decomposition at weak acid environment and (2) H 2 O 2 induced Ag + reduction onto the nanozyme surface at basic environment, leading to a blueshift in the localized surface plasmonic resonance wavelength (LSPR λ max ) of the nanosensor. With this simple strategy, we demonstrated the sensitive and selective detection of Ag + over a dynamic range from 0.5 to 1000 μM with a limit of detection (LOD) of 500 nM by UV–visible spectroscopy, which is below the permitted level of Ag + in drinking water by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This method also exhibits satisfying recovery efficiency for Ag + detection both in tap water and spring water from the Yuelu Mountain. With this satisfying sensing performance and excellent stability of nanoprobes, this strategy is promising for the detection of Ag + in environment monitoring and food safety analysis.

K-promoted Pt/meso-Al2O3 catalysts for H2 production from dehydrogenation of dodecahydro‑N‑ethylcarbazole

Jihui Yao,Lijuan Su,Lipeng Guo,Xing Wu,Haibo Zhu

N -ethylcarbazole, as a liquid organic hydrogen carrier, has shown great promise in the field of hydrogen storage technology. The development of efficient and stable catalyst for producing H 2 through N -ethylcarbazole dehydrogenation is crucial for its practical application. In this study, a series of mesoporous Al 2 O 3 -supported Pt catalysts with K modification were developed for N -ethylcarbazole dehydrogenation. These catalysts were characterization using various techniques including XRD, N 2 adsorption–desorption, TEM, 27 Al MAS NMR, XPS, NH 3 -TPD, H 2 -TPR, CO-FTIR, and Py-IR, providing detailed structural information to elucidate the structure–activity relationship. Mesoporous Al 2 O 3 was found to possess significant amounts of coordinatively unsaturated pentacoordinate Al 3+ , which greatly promotes the dispersion of Pt species for the formation of small Pt particles. The addition of K was observed to modulate the electronic structure of Pt, reduce the acidity of the catalysts, and inhibit the sintering of Pt. These synergetic effects led to Pt 3.0 /K 3.0 -Al 2 O 3 -m achieving remarkable performance in dodecahydro- N -ethylcarbazole dehydrogenation at 180 °C and 101 kPa, delivering a dodecahydro- N -ethylcarbazole conversion of 100 %, H 2 release amount of 5.63 wt% and dehydrogenation efficiency of 97.10 %. Additionally, this catalyst demonstrated high efficiency in the dehydrogenation of dodecahydro- N -propylcarbazole, octahydro-2-methylindole, and octahydro-1,2-dimethylindole, achieving dehydrogenation efficiencies of 99.60 %, 100 % and 100 %, respectively. These findings provide valuable knowledge for the rational design of efficient metal-based catalysts for liquid organic hydrogen carriers in hydrogen storage systems.

Piezo-photocatalytic interfacial charge regulation in batch-produced PVDF@MOF/Pt core-sheath nanofibrous membranes

Yiman Gao,Zishuo Zhang,Yubin Bai,Bowen Yao,Ying Xu,Yang Liu,Deng-Guang Yu,Yanan Liu

● Core-sheath nanofibers fabricated via batch coaxial electrospinning. ● Polarization-induced band bending regulates MOF/Pt interface. ● PVDF piezopotential drives directional interfacial charge separation. ● Photo-piezo coupling enhances H 2 O 2 production. ● Multiscale evidence supports polarization-mediated charge regulation. Regulating interfacial charge separation and oxygen reduction process in heterogeneous nanostructures remains a fundamental challenge for photocatalytic hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) generation. Herein, we construct a spatially organized core-sheath nanofibrous architecture composed of a piezoelectric poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) core and a UiO-66-NH 2 (Hf)/platinum (Pt) functionalized sheath, enabling dynamic modulation of interfacial band alignment under coupled mechanical and photoexcitation. Strain-induced polarization within the PVDF core generates a transient internal electric field that cooperates with photogenerated charge carriers in the metal-organic framework (MOF)/Pt sheath, thereby favoring interfacial charge separation and Pt-assisted electron trapping while suppressing charge recombination. Comprehensive electrochemical analysis, valence band spectroscopy, piezoresponse force microscopy, electron spin resonance, and finite element simulations consistently reveal that polarization-mediated band bending facilitates electron extraction across the MOF/Pt interface and promotes a hydrogen-peroxide-oriented oxygen reduction process. Under simultaneous light irradiation and mechanical stimulation, the optimized membrane achieves enhanced hydrogen peroxide production of approximately 90 μM within 120 min, together with efficient degradation of representative organic pollutants. By coupling batch-controllable structural fabrication with polarization-mediated interfacial electronic regulation, this study provides a reproducible core-sheath platform and mechanistic insight into polarization-regulated oxygen reduction in composite nanofibrous membranes. Engineering Oxygen Vacancies in Pt/TiO2 Catalysts for Efficient Light-Driven Reverse Water-Gas Shift

Li Fang,Yuxian Jiang,Xueyang Jiang,Qin Zhang,Sihui Suo,Chenhui Zhao,Jiayu Song,Jiancong Liu

Oxygen vacancies are a key factor determining the efficiency of the CO2hydrogenation reaction and play a crucial role in CO2adsorption and activation. However, effectively regulating the concentration of oxygen vacancies to enhance the performance of the light-driven reverse water gas shift (RWGS) reaction remains a challenge. To address this, this study successfully developed Pt/TiO2catalysts with varying oxygen vacancy concentrations by controlling the morphology of TiO2. Structural characterization results indicate that, compared to Pt/TiO2-NR, Pt/TiO2-NB exhibits a higher oxygen vacancy (OV) concentration and greater CO2absorption. Catalytic performance evaluation results showed that under an irradiance of 2.5 W/cm2, the CO production rates of the Pt/TiO2-NB catalyst reached 57.03 mol·gPt−1·h−1. Furthermore, the catalyst maintained excellent catalytic stability during 45 h of continuous operation, demonstrating good potential for practical applications.

Toxicity-shielded Ag-Pt-ICG nanocomposite with photothermal-enhanced ionic release for lung cancer therapy

Min Gao,Gege Li,Xiaoran Zheng,Yang Yang,Hai Zhong,Yunlei Zhang,Xiuwei Zhang

Background Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) show antitumor potential but are limited by off-target oxidative toxicity. By integrating platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) with indocyanine green (ICG)-mediated near-infrared (NIR) responsiveness, we developed an Ag-Pt-ICG (API) nanocomposite for fluorescence imaging and combined lung cancer therapy with enhanced therapeutic efficacy. Methods Ultrasmall Ag-Pt nanocomposites were synthesized via a seeded-growth strategy and subsequently functionalized with peptides to yield the intermediate conjugate AP-peptide (AP/PP). The photosensitizer indocyanine green bearing an NHS-ester group (ICG-NHS) was conjugated to the nanocomposites via peptide linkage, yielding API constructs. Comprehensive physicochemical characterization, including morphology, particle size, elemental composition, and colloidal stability, was conducted. We evaluated biosafety, and antitumor performance through a series of in vitro and in vivo assays. Results The API-based nanocomposites possessed typical nanoscale morphology and showed superior dispersion stability in serum-supplemented DMEM compared with PBS. Upon 808 nm NIR light irradiation, these nanocomposites achieved efficient photothermal conversion, excellent photothermal cycling stability, and NIR-triggered ROS production, endowing them with combined photothermal/photodynamic therapeutic effects. Under acidic conditions at pH 6.5, the nanocomposites could release silver ions into the surrounding medium, and 808 nm laser irradiation further accelerated silver ion release relative to the control group. In vitro results revealed that combined treatment with API nanocomposites and 808 nm NIR irradiation significantly suppressed the viability of A549 cells and elevated intracellular ROS levels. In vivo experiments confirmed that the combined treatment of API nanocomposites with 808 nm NIR laser exerted prominent tumor growth inhibition and alleviated tumor burden in tumor-xenografted mice compared with control groups. Forty-eight-hour in vivo fluorescence imaging confirmed the effective tumor accumulation of the nanocomposites. The fluorescence signal gradually decreased at later time points, suggesting time-dependent elimination while maintaining detectable tumor retention during the observation period. Furthermore, preliminary biosafety assessment confirmed no evident acute systemic toxicity under the tested conditions, which was evidenced by stable body weight changes, normal liver and renal function-related serum biochemical parameters, as well as hematoxylin-eosin staining results of major vital organs. Collectively, all these findings demonstrate that the as-prepared API nanocomposites are promising multifunctional nanoplatforms for NIR-activated combined tumor therapy with satisfactory biocompatibility. Conclusion The NIR-activated API hybrid nanoplatform synergizes photothermal-photodynamic therapy with Ag-induced cytotoxicity while suppressing off-target ROS toxicity via Pt-mediated antioxidant activity. This approach offers a clinically translatable strategy to enhance both the therapeutic efficacy and safety profile of metal-based nanotherapeutics. Robust dual-heterojunction Pt/CeO2-Ni(OH)2 bifunctional electrocatalyst toward efficient overall water splitting

Xiangyang Gao,Xin Liu,Chenxi Zhou,Qiyan Wang,Ruya Guo

Tailoring efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst with dual-heterojunction is crucial for overall water splitting (OWS). Herein, a multicomponent bifunctional catalyst with dual-heterojunction is rapidly constructed via sequential electrodeposition for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that bidirectional electron transfer at the interface induces a double built-in electric field (BIEF) in Pt/CeO 2 -Ni(OH) 2 , which offers additional impetus for electron transport and brings the d -band center closer to the Fermi level, thereby optimizing reaction kinetics and the adsorption of reaction intermediates. Active Pt and CeO 2 nanoparticles (NPs) are uniformly anchored on the stable Ni(OH) 2 nanoflocs, ensuring high exposure of active sites and preventing NPs aggregation. Meanwhile, Ni(OH) 2 , serving as abundant electron donor center, forms dual heterointerface with Pt and CeO 2 (Pt-Ni(OH) 2 and CeO 2 -Ni(OH) 2 ), which ensures structural stability during electrochemical processes. Benefiting from the dual-heterojunction and the unique structure design, Pt/CeO 2 -Ni(OH) 2 exhibits excellent electrocatalytic performance, requiring only 66 mV (10 mA cm −2 ) and 278 mV (100 mA cm −2 ) for HER and OER, respectively. Remarkably, the two-electrode electrolyzer based on Pt/CeO 2 -Ni(OH) 2 electrode requires only 1.49 V to deliver 10 mA cm −2 with an excellent durability for OWS. This work brings light to the rational design and directional construction of bifunctional electrocatalyst hybrid nanomaterials with multiple heterojunctions.

In Situ Raman Spectroscopy Correlates *OOH Intermediates with Oxygen Reduction Activity on Pt-Based Nanocatalysts

Zou Lie,Huang Xiao-Yan,Zhang Yi,A Yao-Lin,Xu Qing-Chi,Chen Bing-Hui,Liu Jinxuan,Zhang Hua,Li Jian-Feng

Understanding the molecular origins of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity on Pt-based catalysts is essential for the rational design of high-performance electrocatalysts. Herein, by combining electrochemical measurements with in situ shell-isolated nanoparticle-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SHINERS), we systematically investigate the ORR pathway on Pt-based alloy nanocatalysts incorporating different transition metals to elucidate how surface oxygenated intermediates dictate ORR activity. Among the catalysts examined, PtNi exhibited higher activity than PtFe, PtCo, and commercial Pt/C, underscoring the pronounced sensitivity of intrinsic ORR activity to alloy composition. Potential-dependent in situ Raman spectra, corroborated by isotopic labeling, directly identified *OOH as a key ORR intermediate and established a clear correlation between its vibrational frequency and catalytic activity. The results suggest that Ni alloying may modify the electronic environment of Pt, thereby weakening the Pt-O interaction, optimizing the adsorption state of the kinetically relevant *OOH intermediate, and consequently promoting ORR kinetics. This study establishes an effective spectroscopic platform for probing ORR intermediates on realistic electrocatalyst surfaces and offers molecular-level understanding of the activity enhancement in Pt-based alloy catalysts.

Encapsulation of Pt Nanoparticles in ZSM-5 Zeolite for the Durable Hydrogen-Water Isotope Exchange

Xiaolin Zhou,Jun Chen,Zhen Wang,Yuwen Jiang,Zeping Peng,Yifei Yang

Bifunctional Pt-zeolite catalysts have shown outstanding activity for hydrogen-water isotope exchange due to the highly-efficient synergy between metal and Brønsted acid. However, the aggregation and sintering of Pt particles during this reaction impose the great difficulties for their practical applications. Here, the highly dispersed Pt nanoparticles were embedded into framework or channeled within micropores of ZSM-5 by one-pot hydrothermal synthesis to form the encapsulated catalysts. For comparison, a supported one with Pt species predominantly dewelled on the extra-framework was prepared to interrogate their catalytic durabilities during H 2 -HDO isotope exchange. The similarly catalytic efficacy of metal-acid enables the encapsulated and supported ones to share the same reaction pathway by the protonated water clusters on acid sites to deliver deuteron to reactive ones for the interfacial hydrogen isotope exchange between Pt and water cluster, leading to the measured reaction rate and activation energy to be comparable. During the long-term running, the encapsulated Pt-zeolite catalyst exhibits the superior stability with the ignorable activity loss due to the physical constraint effect to suppress the migration of Pt species. However, the absence of this effect upon the supported one causes the severe sintering and agglomeration of metal species, which greatly deteriorates the catalytic exchange. Graphical Pt nanoparticles were hydrothermally introduced within ZSM-5 framework for the liquid-phase hydrogen-water isotope exchange. This encapsulated structure exhibited the exceptional durability in long-term running, due to the inhibition of Pt species migration by the physical confinement effect of rigid framework.

Electrocatalytic hydrodeoxygenation of guaiacol on Pt/TiO2: The modulation on guaiacol adsorption and H spillover

Yiwei Zhao,Zuhang Jin,Cheng Tao,Rui Du,Yongzheng Shi,Chao Zhang

The synthesis of KA oil (a cyclohexanone-cyclohexanol mixture) from guaiacol through mild electrocatalytic approach represents a sustainable strategy for biomass valorization. Herein, we report the electrocatalytic conversion of guaiacol to KA oil over the reduced Pt/TiO 2 catalysts. The TiO 2 -induced hydrogen spillover effect facilitates strategic modulation of H ads (H*) coverage on Pt surfaces, thereby effectively suppressing competitive aromatic ring hydrogenation and excessive hydrogen evolution reactions. Comparative studies of electrocatalysis and thermocatalysis have demonstrated that Pt active sites serve as the dominant catalytic centers. However, H spillover significantly influences reactivity and selectivity, particularly in the electrocatalytic pathways. The electrocatalytic system demonstrates preferential C–O bond cleavage with KA oil selectivity around 70%. This work provides valuable insights into the regulation of metal-support interactions in the design of electrocatalysts.
