Inspired by natural photosynthesis, the design of novel Z-scheme photocatalytic systems holds great promise for improving photocatalytic hydrogen production performance. Here, we constructed a Z-scheme heterojunction to effectively improve the charge separation of TiO 2 /ZnIn 2 S 4 , with the N-doped C layer acting as an electron bridge. The T@NC-A/ZIS-72 heterojunctions demonstrated hydrogen production activity approximately 12.1 and 97.9 times higher than those of ZnIn 2 S 4 and TiO 2 @NC-A, respectively. The excellent electron migration ability of the carbon layer accelerated the photocatalytic hydrogen production performance. Our design introduces a component to provide a dedicated charge transport pathway, overcoming the inherent properties of the material and providing a new perspective for enhancing photocatalytic performance.

The decaying photocatalytic rate caused by carrier recombination is a thorny problem that has not been properly solved. Improvement of photocatalysis can be achieved through structural innovation, diversification of catalytic modes, or a combination of both. Herein, effective separation of photo-generated carriers in Bi 0·5 Na 0·5 TiO 3 /ZnO composites was achieved by heterojunction construction for energy band regulation and synchronously mechanical energy harvesting from piezoelectric effect. The formation of heterojunctions between Bi 0·5 Na 0·5 TiO 3 and ZnO was confirmed by electron microscopy and analysis of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy spectra. The degradation performance of Rhodamine B, a representative industrial dye contaminant, was optimized through the formation of Bi 0·5 Na 0·5 TiO 3 /ZnO heterojunctions and ultrasonic vibration harvesting. Their band structures were described in detail and electrochemical tests were performed to substantiate a novel Z-scheme heterostructure that can explain the carrier separation and transfer processes in catalysis. The piezoelectric polarization field generated by the piezoelectric effect of both Bi 0·5 Na 0·5 TiO 3 and ZnO coordinates perfectly with the photocatalysis , enabling the piezo-photocatalysis. Our research opens a promising avenue in alleviating charge carrier complexation through heterojunction construction and mechanical strain for future pollutants degradation via catalysis.

p–n heterojunction composites with high-charge-transfer efficiency have attracted considerable attention owing to their unique structure and interface interactions. Herein, a novel Z-scheme Cu 2 O/SrBi 4 Ti 4 O 15 p–n heterojunction was successfully constructed using the microwave hydrothermal method for DOC removal under visible light irradiation. The structure, composition, and photoelectric chemical properties of Cu 2 O/SrBi 4 Ti 4 O 15 nanocomposites were studied. The composites exhibited high photocatalytic activity for DOC, and 92.2% of DOC was decomposed within 60 min, which is 9.2 and 5.2 times higher than those of original Cu 2 O and SrBi 4 Ti 4 O 15 , respectively. The extraordinary degradation performance can be attributed to the formation of Z-scheme heterostructure. On the one hand, a unique interface structure can significantly enhance the number of active sites on the catalyst surface. On the other hand, Z-scheme heterostructure can accelerate generation and migration of the photoinduced carriers. Furthermore, the effects of operational parameters such as catalyst dosage, initial concentration, inorganic salts, and water sources, were investigated. Finally, a photodegradation mechanism of Z-scheme Cu 2 O/SrBi 4 Ti 4 O 15 p–n heterojunction for DOC was proposed.

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are new porous materials composed of metal centers and organic ligand bridges, which received great attention in the field of photocatalysis. In this work, Ag2CrO4@MIL–125(Ti)–NH2(denoted as AgCr@M125) Z–scheme heterojunctions were synthesized via a simple microemulsion method, by which highly dispersed nano–sized Ag2CrO4can be anchored uniformly on the surfaces of porous MIL–125(Ti)–NH2(denoted as M125). Compared with pure M125 and Ag2CrO4, the as–prepared AgCr@M125 hybrids show significant photocatalytic efficiency against inactivatedStaphylococcus aureus(S. aureus), reaching over 97% inactivation of the bacteria after 15 min of visible light irradiation. Notably, the photocatalytic activity of the obtained 20%AgCr@M125 is about 1.75 times higher than that of AgCr–M125, which was prepared via a traditional precipitation method. The enhanced photocatalytic antibacterial activity of the AgCr@M125 photocatalytic system is strongly ascribed to a direct Z–scheme mechanism, which can be carefully discussed based on energy band positions and time–dependent electron spin response (ESR) experiments. Our work highlights a simple way to enhance the antibacterial effect by coupling with Ag2CrO4and M125 via a microemulsion–assisted strategy and affords an ideal example for developing MOFs–based Z–scheme photocatalysts with excellent photoactivity.Keywords:MIL–125(Ti)–NH2;Ag2CrO4;S. aureus;Z–scheme;microemulsion method

Herein, a ternary TiO 2 /MIL-88A(Fe)/g-C 3 N 4 heterojunction is successfully constructed through a facile hydrothermal strategy for enhancing solar energy harvesting and efficiency of catalytic nitrogen reduction induced by enlarged light absorption range, increasing interfacial charge transfer ability and desirable stability. Under the simulated sunlight irradiation, the N 2 fixation experiment shows that the yield of NH 3 reaches 1084.31 μmol/(g·h) over the TiO 2 /MIL-88A(Fe)/g-C 3 N 4 photocatalyst, and the yield is significantly enhanced, which is 33.68 and 13.94 times that is higher than the pure TiO 2 and g-C 3 N 4 , respectively. In a mean time, the excellent performance of the photocatalytic N 2 fixation over the ternary TiO 2 /MIL-88A(Fe)/g-C 3 N 4 is verified based on density function theory calculation and the decisive step over the composite is investigated by calculating Gibbs free energies of nitrogen reduction paths. The performance enhancement mechanism of TiO 2 /MIL-88A(Fe)/g-C 3 N 4 is speculated, which indicates that the hybridized three-component system presents a desirable Z-scheme band alignment, resulting in the improvement of separation and transfer efficiency of photoinduced charge carriers. The article shows a new and high-efficiency TiO 2 /MIL-88A(Fe)/g-C 3 N 4 photocatalysis for excellent nitrogen reduction ability.

Photocatalytic activation of persulfate for the synergistic degradation of pollutants has become a major research hotspot, but the activation effect is poor due to the problems of low catalyst carrier separation efficiency and insufficient active sites. In this study, direct Z-Scheme heterojunctions of MoO 2 @CoFe LDHs were prepared by a simple hydrothermal method and a Co and Fe dual active site system was constructed to activate Na 2 S 2 O 8 (PS) for the synergistic degradation of tetracycline under visible light. The results showed that the synergistic degradation of tetracycline was 3.7 times and 2.7 times more efficient than the original heterojunction and PS, respectively. Combining material characterisation, photovoltaic performance tests and theoretical calculations revealed that the high efficiency is attributed to the formation of an internal electric field under the Z-Scheme heterostructure type generating effective electron-hole separation, with more photo-generated electrons converted into radicals acting together with holes to degrade the TC and activate the PS. More importantly, Co(II) and Fe(II) provide electrons to synergistically activate PS, and a portion of the photogenerated electrons and PS activation intermediates can facilitate cycling between Co(II)/Co(III) and Fe(II)/Fe(III) to accelerate PS activation. This paper's work on activating PS-assisted Z-Scheme heterojunctions for the efficient degradation of TC provides a reference for the study of high-performance photocatalytic catalysts for the degradation of organic pollutants .

The rational design and fabrication of junction-based photocatalysts is of great importance to enhance the photocatalytic efficiency of water splitting. Herein, a new heterophase junction photocatalyst consisting of cubic bixbyite and rhombohedral corundum In2O3 (c-In2O3 and h-In2O3) was readily prepared by directly annealing an InOOH precursor in an inert atmosphere. The resulting c/h-In2O3 heterophase junction photocatalyst showed an optimal hydrogen production rate of 0.73 mmol g−1 h−1 in a 6 h period reaction from alkaline formaldehyde solution in the presence of molecular oxygen under visible light irradiation, which was approximately 5.6 and 3.4 times higher than that of single-component c-In2O3 and h-In2O3, respectively. The superior photocatalytic activity of the c/h-In2O3 heterophase junction was partially attributed to its appropriate band gap and band positions. Spectroscopic characterization and photoelectrochemistry experiments indicated that the heterophase junction photocatalyst could effectively enhance charge separation and transfer abilities between h-In2O3 and c-In2O3. Furthermore, molecular O2 was found to play a key role in mediating the photocatalytic H2 evolution from formaldehyde oxidation as a catalytic electron scavenger, and O2 was not consumed throughout the reaction. Thus, the photocatalytic activity was also greatly enhanced because the adsorption ability of oxygen species was effectively improved after the formation of heterophase junctions.

Reducing the recombination rate of photoexcited electron–hole pairs is always a great challenging work for the photocatalytic technique. In response to this issue, herein, a novel Z-scheme CuInS2/In2O3 with interfacial S–O linkages was synthesized by a hydrothermal and subsequently annealing method. The Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS) measurements confirmed the formation of covalent S–O bonds between CuInS2 and In2O3. The quenching and electron spin resonance (ESR) tests revealed the Z-scheme transfer route of photogenerated carriers over the CuInS2/In2O3 heterojunctions, which was further verified theoretically via density functional theory (DFT) calculations. As expected, the CuInS2/In2O3 heterojunctions showed significantly boosted photocatalytic activities for lomefloxacin degradation and Cr(VI) reduction under visible light illumination compared with the bare materials. Accordingly, a synergistic photocatalytic mechanism of Z-scheme heterostructures and interfacial S–O bonding was proposed, in which the S–O linkage could act as a specific bridge to modify the Z-scheme manner for accelerating the interfacial charge transmission. Furthermore, the CuInS2/In2O3 heterojunction also exhibited excellent performance perceived in the stability and reusability tests. This work provides a new approach for designing and fabricating novel Z-scheme heterostructures with a high-efficiency charge transfer route.

Solar-driven conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) without sacrificial agents offers an attractive alternative in sustainable energy research; nevertheless, it is often retarded by the sluggish water oxidation kinetics and severe charge recombination. To this end, a Z-scheme iron oxyhydroxide/polymeric carbon nitride (FeOOH/PCN) heterojunction, as identified by quasi in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, is constructed. In this heterostructure, the two-dimensional FeOOH nanorod provides rich coordinatively unsaturated sites and highly oxidative photoinduced holes to boost the sluggish water decomposition kinetics. Meanwhile, PCN acts as a robust agent for CO2 reduction. Consequently, FeOOH/PCN achieves efficient CO2 photoreduction with a superior selectivity of CH4 (>85%), together with an apparent quantum efficiency of 2.4% at 420 nm that outperforms most two-step photosystems to date. This work offers an innovative strategy for the construction of photocatalytic systems toward solar fuel production.

Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 (BOC)/Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 (BOB)/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) Z-scheme heterojunction with promising photocatalytic properties was synthesized via a facile one-pot room-temperature method. Ultra-thin nanosheets of BOC and BOB were grown in situ on rGO. The formed 2D/2D direct Z-scheme heterojunction of BOC/BOB with oxygen vacancies (OVs) effectively leads to lower negative electron reduction potential of BOB as well as higher positive hole oxidation potential of BOC, showing improved reduction/oxidation ability. Particularly, rGO is an acceptor of the electrons from the conduction band of BOC. Its dual roles significantly improve the transfer performance of photo-induced charge carriers and accelerate their separation. With layered nanosheet structure, rich OVs, high specific surface area, and increased utilization efficiency of visible light, the multiple synergistic effects of BOC/BOB/rGO can achieve effective generation and separation of the electron-holes, thereby generating more •O 2 − and h + . The photocatalytic reduction efficiency of CO 2 to CO (12.91 µmol/(g·hr)) is three times higher than that of BOC (4.18 µmol/(g·hr)). Moreover, it also achieved almost 100% removal of Rhodamine B and cyanobacterial cells within 2 hours.

Due to their high persistence and ecotoxicity, developing a green and efficient approach to remove antibiotic residuals from aquatic environments becomes a challenging task. Efficient, visible light-active and reusable semiconductor photocatalyst is a promising solution to address this issue. In this work, Z-scheme CdTe/TiO 2 heterostructure photocatalysts were prepared by a hydrothermal method and the photocatalytic performance of as-prepared samples was evaluated by degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-H) under visible-light irradiation. The optimal performance was achieved for CdTe/TiO 2 heterostructure photocatalyst grown at 120 °C, which can decompose 78% TC-H after 30 min irradiation. The improved photocatalytic performance can be ascribed to synergistic effects including excellent visible-light absorption, efficient charge separation and relatively high redox potentials of electrons and holes associated with Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism. The possible degradation byproducts and stability of CdTe/TiO 2 heterostructures for TC-H degradation are also elucidated. This Z-scheme CdTe/TiO 2 photocatalysts may present a new strategy for degradation of antibiotics, providing an invaluable methodology for alleviation of aquatic environment pollution.

NO removal is one of the most important issues in dealing with air pollution. In this report, Z-scheme (BiO) 2 CO 3 -BiO 2-x -graphene (BOC-BiO 2-x -GR) composite photocatalyst was designed for NO removal under simulated solar light irradiation. Characterizations of physical properties of the ternary composites revealed extended light absorption and high efficient electron-hole separation. Through the optimization of the BiO 2-x content, we observed that the BOC-BiO 2-x (35wt%)-GR composite exhibited superior photocatalytic activities in NO removal as compared to pure BOC, BiO 2-x , and BOC-BiO 2-x binary composites. Detailed microstructural observation showed that the BOC-BiO 2-x heterojunction was formed between BOC (013) and BiO 2-x (111) planes. The density of state (DOS) calculation revealed that due to the different hybridization conditions in the energy bands of BOC and BiO 2-x , the Z-scheme charge transfer should be dominant at the heterojunction interface. The density functional theory (DFT) computation on the Fermi level results confirmed that energy band structure between BOC and BiO 2-x is more in favor of the transfer of photo-generated electrons from CB of BOC to the VB of BiO 2-x , which can be further enhanced by highly conductive GR sheets. The electron spin resonance (ESR) experiments results show that O 2 − and HO were produced during the photocatalytic process, which further provided evidences that the BOC-BiO 2-x (35wt%)-GR composite works as a Z-scheme photocatalyst. This work indicates that Bi-based nanomaterials can be employed as a stable and high efficient solar light active photocatalyst for NO removal in air pollution control.
