Microalgae have been used for the removal of heavy metals or synthetic organics; however, the simultaneous removal of both types of compounds is always technically difficult. In this study, a green algae , Chlamydomonas reinhardtii , was first used to simultaneously remove hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] and o-nitrophenol (ONP), and the balance among biomass, oxidative damage and removal rate was also investigated. The results showed that treatment with Cr(VI) or ONP decreased the photosynthetic and superoxide dismutase activities and increased the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and malondialdehyde content. However, combined treatment with Cr(VI) (≤4 mg/L) and ONP (≤15 mg/L) significantly decreased ROS generation and alleviated cell damage in C. reinhardtii . In addition, the removal rates of Cr(VI) and ONP by C. reinhardtii cells significantly increased from 37.4% to 54.9% and from 35.8% to 45.9%, respectively, and the cells could be reused at least four times. Moreover, the increased acidity in the medium and Cr(VI) reductase content in C. reinhardtii caused Cr(VI) to be reduced to Cr(III). The addition of an exogenous antioxidant decreased the removal rates of Cr(VI) and ONP. These results indicated that the presence of Cr(VI) could induce ROS generation in C. reinhardtii and enhance ONP degradation, which consumed ROS, alleviated cell damage, and thus benefited Cr(VI) reduction. As a result, C. reinhardtii could be used as a theoretical candidate for the simultaneous removal of combined Cr(VI) and ONP contamination.

Two-dimensional transition metal carbides (MXenes) have a unique structure, excellent electronic conductivity and a low Li+ diffusion barrier, and show potential for application in energy storage. Especially, MXenes can act as a conductive matrix to achieve excellent lithium storage performance. Herein, a Ti3C2Tx MXene/carbon nanotubes@red phosphorus (Ti3C2Tx/CNTs@P) nanohybrid with stable Ti–O–P bonds is fabricated. The CNTs are introduced into Ti3C2Tx to construct a conductive network, and then the Ti3C2Tx/CNTs are combined with P by a ball-milling method. In this process, the surface oxygen-containing functional groups of Ti3C2Tx interact with P, forming Ti–O–P bonds. Owing to the large capacity contribution of P, the conductive network and buffering role of Ti3C2Tx/CNTs, and the effect of the Ti–O–P bond, the Ti3C2Tx/CNTs@P nanohybrid exhibits a superior reversible capacity of 2598 mA h g−1 at 0.05C (1C = 2600 mA g−1, based on the active material P), excellent cycling stability (2078 mA h g−1 after 500 cycles) and superior rate capability (454 mA h g−1 at 30C). These results demonstrate that the Ti3C2Tx/CNTs@P nanohybrid offers fascinating potential for high-performance lithium-ion batteries.

A facile calcination temperature awakens inert CoAl 2 O 4 for nonenzymatic glucose sensing. • Partial inversion creates octahedral Co sites that generate high valent active species. • Tetrahedral Co in normal spinel shows negligible glucose electrooxidation activity. • The awakened sensor delivers competitive sensitivity and reliable real sample analysis. Activating intrinsically inert tetrahedral cobalt in spinel oxides for non-enzymatic glucose sensing remains a challenge, since octahedrally coordinated cobalt is known to readily generate active high-valent species whereas its tetrahedral counterpart stays largely inactive. Herein we demonstrate that the intrinsically inactive spinel CoAl₂O₄ can be effectively activated for glucose electrooxidation via a simple calcination temperature strategy. A Co Al gel precursor calcined at 500 °C (CoAl₂O₄-500°) yields a partially inverse spinel with a fraction of cobalt occupying octahedral sites, while the same precursor calcined at 800 °C forms a normal spinel (CoAl₂O₄-800°) with cobalt confined to tetrahedral sites. CoAl₂O₄-500° exhibits strong electrocatalytic activity toward glucose oxidation, whereas CoAl₂O₄-800° remains nearly inert. Consequently, the sensor fabricated from CoAl₂O₄-500° exhibits outstanding sensitivity of 722 μA mM −1 cm −2 , a wide linear range from 0.4 μM to 0.222 mM, and a low detection limit of 0.13 μM. This work establishes that engineering cation site occupancy can effectively activate dormant spinel oxides, thus offering a generalizable design strategy for advanced non-enzymatic electrochemical sensors. Shifting cobalt from tetrahedral to octahedral sites awakens inert CoAl₂O₄ for non-enzymatic glucose sensing. Download: Download high-res image (117KB) Download: Download full-size image

L-Methionine is the unique sulfur-containing amino acid essential for humans and animals, which is widely used in pharmaceutical, food and feed industries. Its green and efficient production has attracted a great deal of attention. Fermentation-enzymatic coupling route is regarded to be promising for L-methionine biosynthesis, while O- succinyl-L-homoserine mercaptotransferase (MetZ) is the key biocatalyst. Exploring and engineering of MetZ with ideal catalytic properties is highly desired. Herein, the MetZ from Chromobacterium violaceum ( Cv MetZ) was screened and through in silico analyses, potential beneficial amino acid residues both at the access channel and around the oxygen anion holes were anchored for site-saturation mutagenesis. The positive mutants were obtained with improved activity for L-methionine biosynthesis using O -succinyl-L-homoserine (OSH) and methyl mercaptan as substrate. The best mutant was further applied for L-methionine production and supply of methyl mercaptan was optimized in a fed-batch approach. The conversion of 100 g/L OSH reached 92% with L-methionine yield of 62.6 g/L, which was well coupled with the OSH fermentation level.

Creatinine O-phosphate (COP) containing phosphorus and nitrogen elements was used as eco-friendly flame-retardant for lyocell/cotton blended fabric (L/C fabric). The flame retardant fabrics are prepared by a simple and effective dip-dry-cure method. Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses certified that COP has been successfully grafted onto the surface of the L/C fabric and distributed evenly. Compared with the control fabric, the thermogravimetric analysis (TG) results showed that the char residue rate of the flame-retardant fabric at 800°C increased by 229% (air atmosphere), indicating that it has excellent char-forming ability. Besides, cone calorimetry results showed that the PHRR and THR values of the treated L/C fabric were reduced by 88.83% and 76.65%, respectively. The volatile pyrolysis products of the treated L/C fabric were determined by thermogravimetric analysis coupled with Fourier transform infrared analysis (TG-IR). In general, these results indicated that the L/C fabric treated with COP had high flame retardancy, excellent washing resistance and thermal stability.

Natural amino acid polymers have been wide-used as bio-compatible emulsion stabilizers . In this study, Amphiphilic O(Phe- r -Glu)s were synthesized through the papain-catalyzed random polymerization of L -phenylalanine and L -glutamate with the major degree of polymerization value of 6–7. The polymerization yield was increased by more than 35 % using choline to reduce the energy barrier for the amino substrates to form the tetrahedral intermediate with the catalytic triad. The squalene/water emulsions stabilized by O(Phe- r -Glu) nanoparticles were pH-insensitive at pH 1–12. The investigation of mechanism found the combined effects of steric hindrance , electrostatic repulsion and the viscosity of the emulsion contributed to the stability of the emulsion droplets. Under acidic condition, the layers of O(Pho- r -Glu)s particle aggregates formed around the emulsion droplets and the higher viscosity of emulsion mainly contributed to the stability of emulsions . At basic condition, the strong electrostatic repulsion between emulsion droplets covered by the negatively charged O(Pho- r -Glu) particles and the steric hindrance contributed mainly to the prevention of the coalescence of emulsion droplets. The application of enzymatically synthesized amphiphilic peptides in emulsion, along with tunable performance through the polymerization of amino substrates, is in line with the sustainable development requirements in fields such as pharmaceuticals, food and cosmetics.

The steric effect caused by the lattice mismatch between the two phases hinders the separation and transfer of photogenerated carriers, which is one of the important factors limiting the activity of heterojunction photocatalysts. In this paper, semi - coherent interface Cu2O/Cu7S4 heterojunction was successfully constructed based on the epitaxy growth method of anion exchange. The degradation of tetracycline by semi - coherent interface Cu 2 O/Cu 7 S 4 -30 heterojunction under simulated visible light reached 95.3 % at 60 min, which is a significant improvement compared with single-phase catalysts and ordinary heterojunction catalysts (Cu 2 O/Cu 7 S 4 -mix). The experimental characterization and theoretical calculations confirmed the existence of unique S-Cu-O chemical bonds in the semi - coherent interface Cu 2 O/Cu 7 S 4 heterojunction. On the basis of heterojunction energy band bending and the formation of built-in electric fields, the S-Cu-O bonds can act as a specific bridge to further facilitate the separation, transfer and delivery of photoelectrons and holes, which contributes to the generation of more oxidatively active species (mainly superoxide radicals and holes). In addition, based on experimental characterization and theoretical calculations, the intermediates, degradation pathways and photodegradation mechanisms of the degradation process have also been discussed in detail.

Rational design of piezo-assisted photocatalytic systems for simultaneously efficient ultilization of solar and mechanical energy is promising but still challenging. In this work, a novel Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 @C (BTO@C) Schottky heterojunction with high piezo-assisted photocatalytic performance is rationaly designed, and the degradation reaction rate constant k for RhB reaches 0.092 min −1 in 30 min. Experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that C-layer is tightly coated on the surface of BTO. Furthermore, C-O covalent bonds , which act as electron transfer channels, are formed at the interface of BTO and C-layer. Meanwhile, the presence of piezoelectric potential field of BTO@C under piezo-assisted photocatalytic conditions further promotes the transfer of photogenerated electrons from BTO to C-layer, which synergistically contributes to the performance enhancement. This work provides a new idea for the design and development of efficient piezo-assisted photocatalytic materials.

Chiral molecules play a very important role in biological systems, and more and more chiral drugs are used in the treatment of diseases. Mandelic acid (MA) is an important chiral starting substance or the key intermediate of some chiral drugs, and the rapid detection of its chiral purity is very important in the synthesis, separation and detection of drugs. In this study, we developed a method for rapid determination of chiral purity of MA by Raman spectroscopy, and measured a series of Raman spectra of different chiral MA. Through the analysis, it is found that the OH stretching vibration peak can be used to identify the components of chiral molecules, and the enantiomeric excess ( ee value) obtained is in good agreement with the real value, and the error is about 5%. The experimental detection speed is fast and the efficiency is high. Our work firstly provides a new idea for the purity detection of chiral molecules by the original Raman spectrum.

The acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) faces great difficulty in concurrently addressing the site-specific activity and stability of the up-to-date choice Ir-based catalysts. Herein, we adopted a new inverse doping strategy to devise a Ti atomic doping into the surficial IrO x /Ir matrix to investigate the boosting effect of Ir-O-Ti motifs toward OER. Notably, only 1.92 wt % Ti introduction leads to 3.6 times and an order of magnitude improvement in intrinsic activity and stability, respectively, ascribed to the creation of abundant Ir-O-Ti motifs. While the Ti sites donate electrons to weaken the Ir-O interaction and thereby ignite Ir sites activity via adsorbate evolution mechanism (AEM), the restricted O–O bond formation in the lattice oxygen mechanism (LOM) and the widened stable region of Ir species help enhance the stability. This work provides a novel insight into the reactivity of atomic-level interface motifs in heterogeneous components, which inspires further design of advanced catalysts.
