pH-responsive charge reversal loaded miRNA nanocomposite was prepared by electrostatic self-assembly. The morphology, particle size and zeta potential of the nanocomposites were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering. The synthesis of the polymer was analyzed by 1 H-NMR. The zeta-potential changes and cellular uptake effects of the nanocomplexes under different pH environments were investigated. The experimental results show that the surface morphology of the nanocomposite is spherical, and the average particle size is about 135 nm. As the pH value of the solution gradually decreases, the surface charge of the nanocomposite reverses from negative charge to positive charge (from −9.4 to +17.1 mV). Cellular uptake mediated by pH-responsive nanocomposite is selective for tumor cells, and the cellular uptake effect in tumor cells at pH 6.5 was approximately 3 times higher than that at pH 7.4. This pH responsive charge reversal nanocomposite has promising application prospects for gene delivery in the weak acid environment of tumors.

Compared with layered materials such as graphite and transition metal disulfide compounds with highly anisotropic in-plane covalent bonds , it is inherently more challenging to obtain independent metallic two-dimensional films with atomic thickness. In this study, PtNi layered metallene nanobowls (LMBs) with multilayer atomic-scale nanosheets and bowl-like structures have been synthesized in one step using structural and electronic effects. The material has the advantage of catalyzing pH-universal hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Compared with Pt/C, PtNi LMBs exhibited excellent HER activity and stability under all pH conditions. The overpotentials of 10 mA cm −2 at 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 , 1.0 M phosphate buffer and 1.0 M KOH were 14.8, 20.3, and 34.0 mV, respectively. Under acidic, neutral and alkaline conditions, the HER Faraday efficiencies reach 98.97%, 98.85%, and 99.04%, respectively. This study provides an example for the preparation of unique multilayer nanobowls, and also provides a basic research platform for the development of special HER materials.

With the deepening of the harm of foodborne pathogens to human health and the increasing attention of people to healthy diet, novel food antimicrobial agents have been widely studied by researchers as hotspots. In this study, three different morphologies of citral-modified ZnO nanopaticles antimicrobial materials were prepared, and the citral-modified porous ZnO nanorods antimicrobial materials with the highest loading (60.35%) and the strongest inhibitory effect (MIC = 0.2 mg/mL ~ 0.1 mg/mL) were screened out through a series of characterization and bacterial inhibition experiments. This novel antimicrobial material has excellent and long-lasting antimicrobial properties. It inhibits Escherichia coli by 100% when stowed at 25°C and protected from light for 10 days, and inhibits the growth of E. coli by 58.17% after being stowed under the same conditions for 60 days. Furthermore, we tested the pH change during 24 hours of E. coli growth and pH responsiveness of the materials. The results demonstrated that under the acid-producing condition of E. coli growth, the pH-sensitive imine bond (-CH=N-) formed by the condensation of amino of functionalized ZnO nanoparticles and citral was hydrolyzed to release the citral, thus indicating that the release mechanism of citral in the antibacterial material was pH-sensitive acid release in the process. The antibacterial materials in this study have broad application prospects in the field of food production and packaging in the future. Meanwhile, this study provides a theoretical basis for guaranteeing food quality and safety.

Inorganic nanoparticles play important roles in cancer treatment, but the issues of biodegradable properties, and tumor penetration restricted further clinical application. Aiming at the low efficiency and toxic side effects problems existing in the current clinical treatment of cancer, a biodegradable mesoporous silica nanoparticle (MSN) platform integrating pH-responsive drug release and synergistic chemo-radiotherapy was developed. The doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX) was loaded in MSNs via electrostatic interactions, with ultra-small hafnium sulfide (HfS 2 ) nanodots were anchored to the surface of MSN. At physiological pH, HfS₂ reinforces DOX retention through steric and electrostatic effects, while in acidic tumor microenvironments, it triggers DOX release. Concurrently, dissociated HfS 2 acts as a radiosensitizer, enhancing X-ray-induced cytotoxicity and promoting deep tumor penetration. Both the in vitro cellular and in vivo animal level results confirmed synergistically enhanced chemoradiotherapy efficiency. Therefore, this research, we believed, will bring a new train of thought and scientific support for more safety and more efficiency in cancer therapy.

Despite excellent charge-discharge performance in carbon-based supercapacitors, their mechanisms across pH solutions remain unclear due to difficulties decoupling capacitive effects from porous structures and intricate micro-nano molecular/ionic channels. To investigate these mechanisms, we electrochemically synthesize structure-defined, nanohole-free N-doped graphene (ENG) as a model system. Attenuated total reflection in situ infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) reveals splendid electrochemical activity for pyridinic N and carboxyl functional groups in acidic medium. In contrast, hydroxyl groups dominate the charge-discharge behavior of ENG in alkaline medium. This behavior differs from the neutral medium scenario, where only C O bonds produce detectable ATR-FTIR peaks. Theoretical calculations identified strong adsorption affinity of pyridinic N and carboxyl functional groups for H + over OH − , which directly enhances the electrochemical activity of ENG in acidic medium. This work pioneers a targeted synthesis strategy for ENG, establishing it as a robust model to decode charge-discharge mechanisms of carbon-based materials across the full pH range.

The activatable upconversion photosensitizer is a type of photosensitizer that can be activated in the tumor microenvironment (TEM) to achieve precise photodynamic therapy. As an inducer of ferroptosis, it is difficult for RSL3 to target tumor cells accurately and may be toxic to normal tissues. Thus, we developed a pH-responsive self-assembled near-infrared upconversion photosensitizer (Re-NPs) and encapsulated RSL3 drugs (RSL3@Re-NPs) to induce ferroptosis synergistically. The RSL3@Re-NPs can effectively release RSL3 under acidic conditions in TEM, and they can generate singlet oxygen under 808 nm. Through the combination of RSL3 and a photosensitizer, the specific release of the drug and the accumulation of lipid peroxide were realized. In vitro and in vivo results showed that RSL3@Re-NPs had good biocompatibility and significantly inhibited tumor cell proliferation by inducing cell ferroptosis. This combination strategy provides new ideas and methods for tumor treatment, which is expected to improve the efficacy of tumor treatment and reduce side effects.

The development of safe, low-cost and highly active non-precious metal electrocatalysts plays a vital role in efficient hydrogen production. Herein, Mo 2 C/Mo 2 N heterostructure was in-situ synthesized by a two-step method for excellent hydrogen evolution performance at a universal pH range. The results show that the optimized MoCN-750-2h only needs 86.5, 102.5 and 120.5 mV overpotentials to reach 10 mA·cm −2 in alkaline, acidic and neutral media, respectively. Not only that, MoCN-750-2h had a low Tafel slope (37.2 and 88.5 mV·dec −1 ) in alkaline and neutral media, implying that catalytic kinetic is close to the level of Pt/C. These results can be attributed to reasonable C and N content in MoCN-750-2 h, optimizing the electron cloud distribution of Mo 2 C/Mo 2 N heterostructure to boost hydrogen production. Graphical In this paper, the nanocomposites with dodecahedral structure ZIF-8@ZIF-67 and BBH@ZIF-8@ZIF-67 have been synthesized by one-pot method. Bimetallic MOFs ZIF-8@ZIF-67 exhibited superior antibacterial properties and good biocompatibility. BBH-loaded ZIF-8@ZIF-67 showed enhanced synergistic antibacterial activity. Molecular docking suggests that PBP2a and DHFR may be potential antibacterial targets of BBH. Stimulus-responsive nanocarrier materials have garnered significant attention in biomedical science. Among them, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as promising candidates due to their remarkable antibacterial properties and pH sensitivity. In this study, a pH-responsive bimetallic MOFs carrier, ZIF-8@ZIF-67, was successfully synthesized for the delivery of berberine hydrochloride (BBH). Comprehensive characterization using UV-Vis spectroscopy, FT-IR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed the successful synthesis and structural integrity of ZIF-8@ZIF-67 and BBH@ZIF-8@ZIF-67. Subsequently, the drug release behavior, antibacterial efficacy, and biocompatibility of the composite material were systematically evaluated. Our findings revealed that BBH@ZIF-8@ZIF-67 exhibited well-controlled drug release properties, excellent antibacterial effects and biocompatibility. Furthermore, molecular docking results revealed that penicillin-binding protein 2a and dihydrofolate reductase in S. aureus may serve as two potential antibacterial targets for BBH. This research provides valuable insights into the use of bimetallic MOFs materials for developing highly efficient stimulus-responsive nanocarrier systems in biomedical applications.

The emergence of drug-resistant bacteria and their easy recurrence have been challenging in the clinical treatment of skin abscesses. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop treatments against bacterial infections. This study developed an antibacterial PDT/CDT dual-mode treatment platform (Ce6/TA-Fe3+ NPs) to treat subcutaneous abscesses and promote wound healing. The Ce6/TA-Fe3+ NPs can quickly generate 1O2 under illumination and ·OH through the Fenton reaction in the microenvironment, leading to the eradication of biofilms. In particular, the Ce6/TA-Fe3+ NPs demonstrated over 90% effectiveness in fighting Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) bacteria and successfully eliminated biofilms after being exposed to a 660 nm laser for 10 min. Antibacterial mechanism research showed that the Ce6/TA-Fe3+ NPs induced a speedy rupture of the bacterial cell membranes, membrane lipid peroxidation, protein leakage, inhibition of intracellular ATP, and DNA damage based on the synergistic effect of PDT and CDT. Meanwhile, the Ce6/TA-Fe3+ NPs demonstrated good biosafety to normal cells and can clear the bacteria from the infected wound to promote the healing process of the infected area. The experimental results in vivo demonstrated that Ce6/TA-Fe3+ NPs effectively treated skin abscesses. Therefore, this study suggested that the Ce6/TA-Fe3+ NPs possessed the ability to kill bacteria, eliminate biofilms, and effectively treat subcutaneous abscesses based on the synergistic mechanism of PDT and CDT, which provided the promising strategy for the antibacterial medication and treatment of subcutaneous abscesses.

Developing highly efficient Pt-based catalysts through interface engineering is significant for hydrogen production by water electrolysis working at pH-universal conditions but still challenging. Herein, a PtCo@PtSn heterojunction with good hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance in pH-universal electrolytes is designed and prepared by combining the advantages of a Pt-based bimetallic alloy and heterojunction. Density functional theory simulations illustrate that the surface electronic structure of Pt is optimized by interface engineering to effectively improve the ability of water dissociation and decrease the Pt H bond strength for obtaining the suitable H* Gibbs free energy (∆ G H* ). It shows low HER overpotentials in 1.0 m KOH (η −10 = 25 mV), 1.0 m phosphate-buffered saline (η −10 = 18 mV), and 0.5 m H 2 SO 4 (η −10 = 21 mV) solutions, respectively, and it can steadily work for 100 000 (100k) cycles by cyclic voltammetry method. Thus, this work provides a novel strategy to design Pt-based hydrogen evolution catalyst with robust catalytic performance.

Metabolites can double as a signaling modality that initiates physiological adaptations. Metabolism, a chemical language encoding biological information, has been recognized as a powerful principle directing inflammatory responses. Cytosolic pH is a regulator of inflammatory response in macrophages. Here, we found that L-malate exerts anti-inflammatory effect via BiP-IRF2BP2 signaling, which is a sensor of cytosolic pH in macrophages. First, L-malate, a TCA intermediate upregulated in pro-inflammatory macrophages, was identified as a potent anti-inflammatory metabolite through initial screening. Subsequent screening with DARTS and MS led to the isolation of L-malate-BiP binding. Further screening through protein‒protein interaction microarrays identified a L-malate-restrained coupling of BiP with IRF2BP2, a known anti-inflammatory protein. Interestingly, pH reduction, which promotes carboxyl protonation of L-malate, facilitates L-malate and carboxylate analogues such as succinate to bind BiP, and disrupt BiP-IRF2BP2 interaction in a carboxyl-dependent manner. Both L-malate and acidification inhibit BiP-IRF2BP2 interaction, and protect IRF2BP2 from BiP-driven degradation in macrophages. Furthermore, both in vitro and in vivo, BiP-IRF2BP2 signal is required for effects of both L-malate and pH on inflammatory responses. These findings reveal a previously unrecognized, proton/carboxylate dual sensing pathway wherein pH and L-malate regulate inflammatory responses, indicating the role of certain carboxylate metabolites as adaptors in the proton biosensing by interactions between macromolecules.
