Effects of ZnO nanoparticles on aerobic denitrification by strain Pseudomonas stutzeri PCN-1

Qian Chen,Tingting Li,Mengyao Gui,Shufeng Liu,Maosheng Zheng,Jinren Ni

Anaerobic denitrification has been proved to be negatively affected by ZnO nanomaterials (NPs), but little is known about how ZnO NPs affects aerobic denitrification. In this study, inhibition of ZnO NPs to an aerobic denitrifier, Pseudomonas stutzeri PCN-1, was firstly reported. The results showed total nitrogen removal efficiency was decreased from 100% to 1.70% with the increase of ZnO NPs from 1 to 128   mg/L. The presence of ZnO NPs caused significant inhibition of gene expressions and catalytic activities of nitrate reductase and nitrite reductase, which finally led to delayed nitrate reduction and high nitrite accumulation. Further studies revealed that the deposition of nanoparticles on the bacterial surface caused by electrostatic forces and the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) were responsible for the cytotoxicity of ZnO NPs, where ROS played a more important role. These results were of significance to evaluating the potential ecological toxicity and risks of nanomaterials.

Enhancing Hydroxylation of Benzene to Phenol over Vanadium-Modified Hollow TS-1 Catalysts

Rui Feng,Zhou Fang,Runxi Zhang,Xiaoyan Hu,Tianbo Li,Wei Zhou,Feifei Yang,Xinlong Yan,Shijian Lu

Direct hydroxylation of benzene to phenol is a more environmentally friendly way to generate phenol compared with the traditional method. This study developed vanadium-modified hollow-structured titanium silicate-1 (TS-1) as a catalyst for the effective hydroxylation of benzene to phenol under moderate conditions using hydrogen peroxide as an oxidant. The synthesis of TS-1 zeolites has been improved using traditional hydrothermal, crystal seed, and dissolution–recrystallization techniques. Compared with conventional TS-1, hollow-structured TS-1 exhibited a higher mesopore volume and surface area. Later, vanadium doping increased the charge density associated with the framework Ti centers and acid site content. In the radical reaction process, the adsorption and activation of benzene on highly reactive Ti–OOH intermediates, as well as the improvement of performances toward benzene hydroxylation to phenol, were facilitated by the increase in the concentration of open active centers and acid and electron characteristics.

Efficient adsorption desulfurization via encapsulation of CeO2 nanoparticles in hierarchical porous HKUST-1

Yuting Li,Yueyang Xu,Erjian Huang,Liming Kong,Yongping Zeng

Thiophene-like sulfides present in fuel oil release sulfur oxides (SO x ) during combustion, which pose significant risks for both environmental sustainability and public health. Adsorption desulfurization (ADS) has garnered considerable attention because of its mild operating conditions, low production costs, and minimal impact on the octane number of fuels. Metal-organic frameworks used as desulfurizing adsorbents provide several advantages, including a high specific surface area and easily adjustable structures . Here, we synthesized the micro/mesoporous adsorbent CeO 2 @HP-HKUST-1 (CeO 2 @Hierarchical Porous-Hong Kong University of Science and Technology-1) through the hybridization of salicylic acid (SA) using a solvothermal method. We assessed the adsorption performance of   CeO 2 @HP- HKUST-1 _ 1.5   for benzothiophene and thiophene through batch and breakthrough adsorption experiments. The adsorption capacities for thiophene and benzothiophene were measured at 21.2 mg S/g and 35.3 mg S/g, respectively. Remarkably, in competitive toluene experiments, the adsorption capacity for benzothiophene remained significant at 28.9 mg S/g, due to enhanced Ce–S bonding interactions and the exposure of unsaturated metal centers of Cu. Additionally, regeneration experiments demonstrated that CeO 2 @HP-HKUST-1 retained excellent adsorption capacities after four cycles. These findings highlight the potential of CeO 2 @HP-HKUST-1 as an effective adsorbent for desulfurization applications.

Improved Catalytic Performance on Post-Treated Zeolites SAPO-18 for 1-Butene Cracking

Tingting Lu,Yufei Sun,Zhiwei Wang,Shuo Zhang,Yongsheng Yang,Hongdan Zhang,Peng Cheng,Zhen Zhao

A facile and effective post-treatment route has been systematically applied for the preparation of hierarchical zeolites SAPO-18 using oxalic acid or sodium citrate etching solution. The influence of acidic or alkaline post-treatment on the relative crystallinity, morphology, chemical composition, pore characteristics, and acidity of a series of zeolites SAPO-18 was investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption–desorption, temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia, and solid-state magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy experiments. Post-treatment led to an increase in mesoporosity by widening the micropores, but a decrease in the acid strength of zeolite SAPO-18 samples. The effects of mesoporosity and acidity on the catalytic cracking performance of zeolite SAPO-18 samples were studied. The hierarchical zeolite SAPO-18 sample post-treated by alkaline sodium citrate solution with suitable concentration exhibited better catalytic conversion and improved light olefin selectivity in cracking of 1-butene.

Adsorption and desorption of phenanthrene and 1-hydroxyphenanthrene by goethite-coated polyvinyl chloride

Zhiyu Zhang,Shuyue Liu,Dehua Zeng,Jingyi Gu,Tingting Cai,Ketong Chen,Hong Zhou,Zhi Dang,Chen Yang

Microplastics loaded with phenanthrene and derivatives are widely detected in aquatic environments, and the coating of natural minerals or organic macromolecules may change the environmental behavior of microplastics. In this study, three kinds of composites with different coverage were prepared by coating goethite on the surface of polyvinyl chloride microplastics to investigate the adsorption and desorption behavior of phenanthrene (PHE) and 1-hydroxyphenanthrene (1-OHPHE), and the effect of mucin on desorption was investigated. The results showed that goethite promoted the adsorption of PHE and 1-OHPHE by increasing the specific surface area of the composites. With the increase of the cover degree, the adsorption of PHE decreased because of the decrease in hydrophobicity; while the adsorption of 1-OHPHE initially increased and then decreased with the contributions of hydrophobic interaction and hydrogen bond. The adsorption of 1-OHPHE could be influenced by the pH and ionic strength primarily through electrostatic interactions and Ca 2+ bridging. The goethite significantly increased the desorption hysteresis for two chemicals due to the complicated pore structures and increased adsorption affinity. Mucin promoted the desorption of PHE through competitive adsorption, and inhibit the desorption of 1-OHPHE through hydrophobic interaction, hydrogen bonding and Ca 2+ bridging. This study elucidated the effects of natural minerals on the adsorption and desorption behavior of organic pollutants on microplastics, briefly discussed the effects of organic macromolecules on the desorption behavior of pollutants with different properties, and emphasized the different environmental behaviors of pollutants.

Aluminium-based MOF CAU-1 facilitates effective removal of florfenicol via hydrogen bonding

Zhengjie Li,Miao Liu,Chunxia Fang,Huanshu Zhang,Tianyi Liu,Yixian Liu,Heli Tian,Jilong Han,Zhikun Zhang

The widespread use and subsequent accumulation of florfenicol (FFC), a common antibiotic, through the food chain poses significant risks to aquatic ecosystems and human health, necessitating effective strategies for its removal from water bodies. To solve the challenge, herein, we developed a novel aluminum-based metal–organic framework CAU-1, engineered for the efficient adsorption of FFC. CAU-1 contains the plentiful –NH 2 and μ-OH groups with the positively charged on the surface. In the adsorption process, CAU-1 perform hydrogen bonding interactions with FFC’s functional groups (−F, –OH, −Cl, –NH–, and −SO 2 –). Furthermore, the positively charged surface of CAU-1 enhances FFC adsorption via electrostatic attraction together. FFC adsorption equilibrium on CAU-1 is attained within 180 min with a monolayer adsorption capacity of 386 mg/g at 303 K, surpassing most of the reported adsorbents. The exothermic FFC adsorption process on CAU-1 remains largely unaffected by coexisting ions. Additionally, CAU-1 can be efficiently regenerated using a mixed solution of 0.1 M HCl and ethanol–water as an eluent. This work highlights CAU-1’s potential as an effective adsorbent for FFC removal, emphasizing the importance of tuning or designing surface functional groups on adsorbents to boost their adsorption capabilities.

1-Bromopyrene as a Photoredox Catalyst for O-ATRP: Exploring Low Loading Conditions

Shufang Wu,Zhiqian Long,Yushu Zhang,Ting Zhang,Qinghong Luo,Xiaoxuan Liu,Zhiquan Li

Using low catalyst loadings while maintaining precise polymer property control is a critical challenge in the O-ATRP field. Herein, we report a novel O-ATRP system utilizing 1-bromopyrene (Py-Br) as a photoredox catalyst, enabling controlled polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) at an ultra-low loading of 10 ppm. When combined with ethyl α -bromophenylacetate (EBPA) as an initiator, this system produces polymers with a molecular weight distribution of 1.48 and an initiation efficiency of 66.7%. Mechanistic studies, including UV–Vis spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and time-resolved fluorescence measurements, elucidate the photophysical and photochemical properties of Py-Br in O-ATRP. Kinetic analyses reveal first-order polymerization kinetics, while the linear increase of molecular weight with monomer conversion and low dispersity values indicate good control over the polymerization. The living nature of the system is further confirmed through successful chain extension experiments. This Py-Br-catalyzed O-ATRP system explores the feasibility of conducting polymerization at lower catalyst concentrations, offering insights into approaches for reducing catalyst usage in polymer synthesis. Graphical Photoinduced metal-free ATRP of MMA using ppm-level Py-Br as the organic photocatalyst.

Biotransformation activities of fungal strain apiotrichum sp. IB-1 to ibuprofen and naproxen

Peng Liang,Yun Hui,Ji Jing,Zhang Wenjie,Xu Ting,Li Si,Wang Zhenfei,Xie Li,Li Xiangkai

Ibuprofen (IBU) and naproxen (NPX), as widely prescribed non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), are largely produced and consumed globally, leading to frequent and ubiquitous detection in various aqueous environments. Previously, the microbial transformation of them has been given a little attention, especially with the isolated fungus. A yeast-like Apiotrichum sp. IB-1 has been isolated and identified, which could simultaneously transform IBU (5 mg/L) and NPX (2.5 mg/L) with maximum efficiencies of 95.77% and 88.31%, respectively. For mono-substrate, the transformation efficiency of IB-1 was comparable to that of co-removal conditions, higher than most of isolates so far. IBU was oxidized mainly through hydroxylation (m/z of 221, 253) and NPX was detoxified mainly via demethylation (m/z of 215) as shown by UPLC-MS/MS results. Based on transcriptome analysis, the addition of IBU stimulated the basic metabolism like TCA cycle. The transporters and respiration related genes were also up-regulated accompanied with higher expression of several dehydrogenase, carboxylesterase, dioxygenase and oxidoreductase encoding genes, which may be involved in the transformation of IBU. The main functional genes responsible for IBU and NPX transformation for IB-1 should be similar in view of previous studies, which needs further confirmation. This fungus would be useful for potential bioremediation of NSAIDs pollution and accelerate the discovery of functional oxidative genes and enzymes different from those of bacteria.

Microfluidic colorimetric biosensor for rapid and sensitive detection of Shewanella oneidensis MR‑1

Mingxia Jiang,Yuyin Lin,Liyuan Xu,Zhihang Chen,Junxian Wu,Yong Yuan,Lihua Zhou

Extracellular respiratory bacteria (ERB) assume a significant role in biological and environmental remediation, so the rapid detection of ERB is essential to monitor its biological repair process. This study developed a microfluidic colorimetric biosensor for rapid and sensitive detection of ERB model strain Shewanella oneidensis MR-1. In the process of separation and enrichment of bacteria based on immune magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), the biological signal is significantly amplified by the excellent peroxidase activity of flower-like CoOOH (FL-CoOOH). Firstly, immune MNPs, samples and immune FL-CoOOH were mixed and incubated within the microfluidic chip’s channel. Magnetic capture in the separation chamber yielded MNP-bacteria-CoOOH complex. Then, 3, 3′, 5, 5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) substrate was added to make the FL-CoOOH nanozyme catalyze the formation of yellow product. Finally, the target bacteria in the microplate were quantitatively detected. Based on the excellent simulated enzyme activity and stability of FL-CoOOH, the detection can be completed within 45 min after the introduction of the microfluidic chip. The detection was 5×10 1 ∼5×10 6 CFU/mL. Compared with the previously reported colorimetric sensors for MR-1, the sensitivity was increased by 99.54 % to 23 CFU/mL. This study uniquely integrates optical sensors and microfluidic technology for rapid ERB detection with enhanced portability. The design of biosensor can facilitate further investigations into extracellular respiration mechanisms and rapid ecological environment restoration applications.

Perturbation of phosphoglycerate kinase 1 (PGK1) only marginally affects glycolysis in cancer cells

Chengmeng Jin,Xiaobing Zhu,Hao Wu,Yuqi Wang,Xun Hu

Phosphoglycerate kinase 1 (PGK1) plays important roles in glycolysis, yet its forward reaction kinetics are unknown, and its role especially in regulating cancer cell glycolysis is unclear. Here, we developed an enzyme assay to measure the kinetic parameters of the PGK1-catalyzed forward reaction. The Km values for 1,3-bisphosphoglyceric acid (1,3-BPG, the forward reaction substrate) were 4.36 μm (yeast PGK1) and 6.86 μm (human PKG1). The Km values for 3-phosphoglycerate (3-PG, the reverse reaction substrate and a serine precursor) were 146 μm (yeast PGK1) and 186 μm (human PGK1). The Vmax of the forward reaction was about 3.5- and 5.8-fold higher than that of the reverse reaction for the human and yeast enzymes, respectively. Consistently, the intracellular steady-state concentrations of 3-PG were between 180 and 550 μm in cancer cells, providing a basis for glycolysis to shuttle 3-PG to the serine synthesis pathway. Using siRNA-mediated PGK1-specific knockdown in five cancer cell lines derived from different tissues, along with titration of PGK1 in a cell-free glycolysis system, we found that the perturbation of PGK1 had no effect or only marginal effects on the glucose consumption and lactate generation. The PGK1 knockdown increased the concentrations of fructose 1,6-bisphosphate, dihydroxyacetone phosphate, glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate, and 1,3-BPG in nearly equal proportions, controlled by the kinetic and thermodynamic states of glycolysis. We conclude that perturbation of PGK1 in cancer cells insignificantly affects the conversion of glucose to lactate in glycolysis.

DJ-1 suppresses ferroptosis through preserving the activity of S-adenosyl homocysteine hydrolase

Cao Ji,Chen Xiaobing,Jiang Li,Lu Bin,Yuan Meng,Zhu Difeng,Zhu Hong,He Qiaojun,Yang Bo,Ying Meidan

Ferroptosis is a newly characterized form of regulated cell death mediated by iron-dependent accumulation of lipid reactive oxygen species and holds great potential for cancer therapy. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying ferroptosis remain largely elusive. In this study, we define an integrative role of DJ-1 in ferroptosis. Inhibition of DJ-1 potently enhances the sensitivity of tumor cells to ferroptosis inducers both in vitro and in vivo. Metabolic analysis and metabolite rescue assay reveal that DJ-1 depletion inhibits the transsulfuration pathway by disrupting the formation of the S-adenosyl homocysteine hydrolase tetramer and impairing its activity. Consequently, more ferroptosis is induced when homocysteine generation is decreased, which might be the only source of glutathione biosynthesis when cystine uptake is blocked. Thus, our findings show that DJ-1 determines the response of cancer cells to ferroptosis, and highlight a candidate therapeutic target to potentially improve the effect of ferroptosis-based antitumor therapy.

Oscillatory solvation chemistry for a 500 Wh kg−1 Li-metal pouch cell

Zhang Shuoqing,Li Ruhong,Deng Tao,Ma Qiang,Hong Xiang,Zhang Hao,Zhang Ruixin,Ding Shouhong,Wu Yongjian,Zhu Haotian,Li Menglu,Zhang Haikuo,Lu Di,Ma Baochen,Lv Ling,Li Yong,Chen Lixin,Shen Yanbin,Guo Rui,Fan Xiulin

Cation solvation is well understood in the bulk solution phase, but knowledge is limited regarding the electrode–electrolyte interface. The process by which cation solvation conforms to the interfacial field to form interphases remains unclear. Here we examine the synergistic effects of external and intramolecular fields on accommodating Li + solvates to the Li-metal anode, leading to dielectric-mediated transfer dynamics on the interface. At charged interfaces, cation–anion pairs arrange in a periodic oscillatory distribution. A low-oscillation amplitude exacerbates the electrolyte decomposition and increases surface impedance. We propose a dielectric protocol that maintains cation–anion coordination with a high oscillation amplitude at the interfaces, addressing these issues. Accordingly, we demonstrate a Li-metal pouch cell with an energy density of 500 Wh kg −1 at the Ah level using an ultra-lean electrolyte (1 g Ah −1 ). Our study offers insights into solid/liquid interfaces that are crucial in advancing battery technologies.
