Porous noble metal nanomaterials can be employed to construct sensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates, because the plasmonic nanopores and nanogaps of the porous materials can provide a larger number of hotspots, and can also serve as containers of analyte molecules. However, the fabrication processes of nanoporous noble metal are generally complicated. Here, a facile method is presented to prepare nanoporous Ag nanoparticles-decorated Ag7O8NO3micro-pyramids, which are fabricated through the chemical reduction of the electrodeposited Ag7O8NO3micro-pyramids using NaBH4. The Ag7O8NO3micro-pyramids are fabricated by electrodeposition by using a simple aqueous solution of AgNO3as electrolyte. Then, porous Ag-decorated Ag7O8NO3micro-pyramids are achieved by the chemical reduction of the surface of the electrodeposited Ag7O8NO3micro-pyramids with NaBH4. The high-density nanopores and nanogaps of the fabricated nanoporous Ag can provide plenty of hot spots for Raman enhancement. Additionally, the nanopores have an effective capacity to trap and enrich analytes. Using rhodamine 6G (R6G) as a probe molecule, the SERS performance of the fabricated SERS substrate has been investigated. It is found that a limit of detection (LOD) ~1.0 × 10−15M can be achieved for R6G. Then, the SERS substrates are employed to detect dye molecule (crystal violet) and pesticide (thiram), and their LODs are calculated down to 9.6 × 10−13M and 1.3 × 10−15M, respectively. The enhancement factor of the fabricated SERS substrate is estimated to be as high as 5.6 × 108. Therefore, the nanoporous Ag-decorated Ag7O8NO3micro-pyramids have shown promising application in the sensitive SERS detection of organic molecules.Keywords:surface-enhanced Raman scattering;detection;porous silver;pesticide;chemical reduction

Supported silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) have been used extensively as antibacterial agents in biomedicine, biotechnology, and environmental remediation. However, a facile and scalable method for preparing Ag NPs dispersed homogeneously on supports remains a challenge. In this study, a novel molten salt method was developed successfully to synthesize the supported, homogeneously dispersed Ag NPs on palygorskite. Abundant pores and ample surface hydroxyl groups of palygorskite served as anchoring sites, preventing the rapid growth, aggregation, and sintering of Ag NPs. Typically, palygorskite was mixed with AgNO 3 (as a precursor) and NaNO 3 (as a dispersant), and then the mixture was heated slowly. During the heating process, the AgNO 3 decomposed gradually into Ag NPs and the molten NaNO 3 with a high concentration of ions dispersed the newly formed Ag NPs. The Ag NPs were dispersed homogeneously on the palygorskite and had very small particle sizes (~5.8 nm) even for a significant loading amount (~9 wt.%). As antibacterial agents, the Ag/palygorskite nanocomposites showed enhanced antibacterial activity, compared with those synthesized without the introduction of molten NaNO 3 . In addition, the key effect of the surface hydroxyl groups of palygorskite on the characteristics of the loaded Ag and the corresponding antibacterial activity were also elucidated. As such, the present work provided a novel and facile strategy for the synthesis, without a chemical reductant or surfactant, of supported, highly dispersed Ag NPs on clay minerals and this could have potential in the scalable production and practical application of Ag-based antibacterial materials.

Separating of oil-water emulsions under harsh conditions is a major challenge for membrane-based filtration systems. In this study, a well-stabilized electrospinning nanofibrous membrane was successfully fabricated by combining a high-performance engineering polyarylene ether nitrile (PEN) with polydopamine (PDA), and silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs). The employed PEN has comprehensive performance in thermoresistant, anti-corrode and mechanical properties, which was expected to be a robust polymer matrix. Ag NPs were loaded on PEN electrospinning nanofibrous membranes via PDA coating and in situ growth. Morphological measurements revealed a hierarchical structure of fabricated Ag@PDA/PEN membrane with Ag NPs formed in situ covered on the surface. The particle size of Ag NPs was mainly in the range of 50–85 nm and the diameter of PEN fiber was located at∼0.39 μm. The water contact angle (CA) of membranes increased from 30 o to 130 o by the increasing Ag NPs formation. As a result, the prepared composite membranes reached 4978.71 L/m 2 h and 99 % for permeate flux and good retention rate for oil-water emulsion separation, respectively. Moreover, the high-performance PEN further endowed the tough stability and durability of the obtained composite membranes, which can tolerate corrosive emulsions, resist high temperatures, and maintain a high separation efficiency after cycle reuse. Furthermore, the as-prepared membranes demonstrated excellent anti-bacterial properties (>99.99 %) inherited from the introduction of Ag NPs. Therefore, the comprehensive anti-corrode, anti-heat, and anti-bacterial performance provide the fabricated robust Ag@PDA/PEN electrospinning nanofibrous membrane a broad prospect for purifying water resources, especially industrial wastewater treatment under harsh conditions.

A flexible thermoelectric device has been considered as a competitive candidate for powering wearable electronics. Here, we fabricated an n-type Ag2Se/Ag composite film on a flexible nylon substrate using vacuum-assisted filtration and a combination of cold and hot pressing. By optimising the Ag/Se ratio and the sequential addition and reaction time of AA, an excellent power factor of 2277.3 μW∙m−1K−2(corresponding to aZTof ~0.71) at room temperature was achieved. In addition, the Ag2Se/Ag composite film exhibits remarkable flexibility, with only 4% loss and 10% loss in electrical conductivity after being bent around a rod of 4 mm radius for 1000 cycles and 2000 cycles, respectively. A seven-leg flexible thermoelectric device assembled with the optimised film demonstrates a voltage of 19 mV and a maximum power output of 3.48 μW (corresponding power density of 35.5 W m−2) at a temperature difference of 30 K. This study provides a potential path to design improved flexible TE devices.Keywords:thermoelectricity;Ag2Se;Ag;composite film;flexible device

In order to increase the photocatalytic performance of titanium dioxide mesocrystals (TMCs), in this study, Ag nanoparticles with different mass content were first photodeposited on the surface of as-prepared TMCs to form heterostructured Ag–TMCs catalysts, followed by loading them on g-C 3 N 4 via one step “bottom-to-up” calcination method. The results of photocatalytic degradation toward RhB experiments showed that the prepared ternary photocatalyst of g-C 3 N 4 /Ag–TMCs exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity not only compared with the bare TMCs and Ag–TMCs, but also with all of those reported TiO 2 /Ag/g-C 3 N 4 ternary photocatalysts. Such improved photocatalytic properties were attributed to the synergistic effect created by the LSPR effect and an important role as an electron-conduction bridge of Ag and the existence of heterojunction structure formed between Ag, TMCs and the further coupling g-C 3 N 4 , which added to the evidences that enabled the prepared g-C 3 N 4 /Ag–TMCs catalyst enhanced transfer efficiency of photogenerated carriers and suppressed recombination rate of electron-hole pairs. Moreover, the deposited Ag content had a positive effect on the photocatalytic degradation efficiency. On the basis of the results of this study, the specimen of g-C 3 N 4 /9% Ag–TMCs showed RhB degradation efficiency up to 100% under only 15 min visible-light irradiation. A possible degradation mechanism was also proposed based on several characterizations including photoluminescence spectrum and a serious of photoelectrochemical measurements. Overall, the prepared g-C 3 N 4 /Ag–TMCs ternary photocatalyst with good recyclability looked promising for future practical applications in the visible-light photodegradation of organic pollutants.

As a new structural motif, an interesting 3D energetic metal – framework of silver ions and 3,4-diaminofurazan, [Ag+(daf)NO3−]n, is successfully synthesized and the structure is determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The effects of hydrogen bond, coordination bond, adsorption and filling interactions make this compound have a high density (2.694 g·cm−3 at 293 K). The calculated detonation velocity and the sensitivities are all comparable with trinitrotoluene (TNT). The onset decomposition temperature is equal to hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX), state-of-the-art explosive. This framework provides a potential superiority of E-MOFs for energetic materials.

The heterogenization of Keggin-structure heteropoly acids (HPAs) has been proposed as a strategy to improve their application in biodiesel production in an attempt to comply the green and clean production demand. Herein, the commercial activated carbon (AC) was firstly modified with different metal ions (Cs + , K + and Ag + ), and then the H 6 PV 3 MoW 8 O 40 acid was incorporated into as-modified AC supports, so as to prepare HPAs-based solid catalysts. By screening tests, the 35%H 6 PV 3 MoW 8 O 40 /AC-Ag hybrid solid catalyst showed highly catalytic performance for transesterification of soybean oil. The best oil conversion of 91.3% was achieved under optimized conditions: methanol/oil molar ratio of 30:1, reaction time of 10 h, reaction temperature of 140 °C and catalyst dosage of 8 wt.%. Characterization results of XRD, IR, ICP and TG indicated that H 6 PV 3 MoW 8 O 40 was highly dispersed on the AC-Ag support as the loading was less than 35%. Proton exchange with Ag may contribute to the highly dispersion of H 6 PV 3 MoW 8 O 40 on the support and thus enhance the interaction of the heteropoly acids with the support, thereof leading to the increased catalytic stability. The as-prepared 35%H 6 PV 3 MoW 8 O 40 /AC-Ag catalyst was easily recycled and had good resistance to free fatty acid (FFA) and water, which were usually included in the low-quality oils. Moreover, as a bifunctional catalyst, the solid acid catalyst could simultaneously catalyze the transesterification of soybean oil and esterification of FFAs, and a probable mechanism of the catalytic process was also proposed. All the features of this novel solid catalyst are more advantageous than the homogenous H 6 PV 3 MoW 8 O 40 catalyst, successfully creating an efficient and sustainable approach of biodiesel production especially from the low-quality oils.

Recently, flexible strain sensors have been intensively studied in order to meet the growing demands of detecting multiscale mechanical deformations. However, it remains a big challenge to integrate high stretchability and high sensitivity in a strain sensor simultaneously. In this study, a highly stretchable and sensitive strain sensor is successfully fabricated by constructing ionogel/silver synergistic conductive network. The transmetalation reaction is utilized to transform the copper atoms in the copper/ionogel nanocomposite into more silver atoms with larger radius, which eliminates the interspace among the nanoparticles, and therefore a silver/ionogel nanocomposite with high conductivity is obtained. Owing to the fragility of the conductive network, the obtained nanocomposite possesses high sensitivity. In addition, as the polymer substrate, the conductive ionogel can connect the crack of the silver conductive network during stretching, endowing the nanocomposite with high stretchability. Hence, the obtained strain sensor exhibits a high sensitivity in a wide sensing range and can detect various human activities. Therefore, this strategy can be envisioned as promising strategy for fabricating high-performance strain sensors and other flexible electronics.

Design of active catalysts for chemical utilization of methane under mild conditions is of great importance, but remains a challenging task. Here, we prepared a Ag/AgCl with SiO2 coating (Ag/AgCl@SiO2) photocatalyst for methane oxidation to carbon monoxide. High carbon monoxide production (2.3 μmol h−1) and high selectivity (73%) were achieved. SiO2 plays a key role in the superior performance by increasing the lifetime of the photogenerated charge carriers. Based on a set of semi in situ infrared spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance, and electronic property characterization studies, it is revealed that CH4 is effectively and selectively oxidized to CO by the in situ formation of singlet 1O2via the key intermediate of COOH*. Further study showed that the Ag/AgCl@SiO2 catalyst could also drive valuable conversion using real sunlight under ambient conditions. As far we know, this is the first work on the application of SiO2 modified Ag/AgCl in the methane oxidation reaction.

The self-healing ability of articular cartilage is poor, and hydrogel materials are expected to be used for cartilage replacement due to their high-water content and good biocompatibility. Here, the polyvinyl alcohol-acrylamide-agarose multi-network hydrogel was proposed. The hydrogel has a compressive modulus of 1.19 MPa and a compressive strength limit of 8.87 MPa, as well as a tensile modulus of 0.63 MPa and a tensile strength limit of 1.08 MPa. The mechanical properties of hydrogel meet the requirement for cartilage replacement materials. The in vitro cell experiments indicate that the introduction of agarose improves the cell adhesion of the hydrogel, which is expected to be beneficial in the field of biomedicine.

Photocatalysis is considered to be one of the possible routes to solve energy crises at a low cost. Graphitic-C 3 N 4 combined with other semiconductors at the nanoscale has demonstrated a promising potential in photocatalysis application owing to the heterojunction configuration. In this study, Ag/g-C 3 N 4 /CuNb 2 O 6 -4 (mass ratio of CuNb 2 O 6 to g-C 3 N 4 = 1:4) composites were prepared by photo-deposition of Ag particles on the hydrothermally synthesized g-C 3 N 4 /CuNb 2 O 6 -4 composites. The microstructure, morphology, and light absorption property of the photocatalysts were characterized by X-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The photocatalytic properties of photocatalysts and active species responsible for the degradation of RhB dye under visible light were investigated. After loading Ag particles on the g-C 3 N 4 /CuNb 2 O 6 -4 composites, the resulting Ag/g-C 3 N 4 /CuNb 2 O 6 -4 composites show a bandgap of ~ 2.31 eV and a significant increase in photocatalytic efficiency. In particular, the photocatalytic activity of 11% Ag/g-C 3 N 4 /CuNb 2 O 6 -4 composite (Ag mass fraction = 11%) is nearly seven times that of orthorhombic CuNb 2 O 6 and 3.8 times that of g-C 3 N 4 /CNO-4 composite. The Z-scheme heterojunction has been successfully formed in the Ag/g-C 3 N 4 /CuNb 2 O 6 -4 composites and it enhances the photocatalytic performance significantly with the best degradation efficiency of 88% after 2 h.

This paper reports the design and fabrication of an anisotropic Ag nanocavity array, which mainly uses magnetron sputtering and ion beam etching techniques to get the ordered Ag nanocavity array on the polystyrene templates. The nanocavity array can be used as an active substrate for polarized Raman scattering to eliminate polarization-independent background clutters. By controlling the etching angle of the ion beam and the film thickness of the sample, the size of the Ag nanocavity and the position of hot spots can be tuned. The polarized extinction spectra and the polarization Raman test further show the anisotropy of the nanocavity array, which leads to angle-dependent SERS observations. The three-dimensional simulation results of the polarized electric field are consistent with the polarized Raman spectroscopy results, and the fundamental reason for the response of an anisotropic nanostructure to polarized light is found. The angle-dependent SERS excited by polarized light is used to eliminate the background signals, which finally leads to improved SERS signals.
