Adjusting Al location in the framework of ITH zeolites for catalytic conversion of methanol to olefins

Kai Fan,Qinming Wu,Shuo Liu,Haiyu Kong,Sen Wang,Eduard Kunkes,Trees De Baerdemaeker,Andrei-Nicolae Parvulescu,Nils Bottke,Toshiyuki Yokoi,Dirk E. De Vos,Xiangju Meng,Weiping Zhang,Feng-Shou Xiao

Adjusting location and distribution of Al sites in the zeolite framework is critical for catalysis, and typical strategies include using zeolites as starting Al source. However, this approach is still challenging for aluminosilicate ITH zeolite. Herein, the distribution of Al species in the framework of ITH was efficiently regulated by implementing LTA zeolite as the aluminum source added in the starting gels (LTA-ITH). The obtained LTA-ITH zeolites have similar nanosheet morphology, textual parameters, and acidic properties to those of conventional ITH synthesized from boehmite (C-ITH), while the results of 27 Al MAS NMR spectra and 1-hexene cracking indicate that they have a different Al distribution. The use of LTA zeolite in starting gel is favorable for the formation of more Al species in sinusoidal and straight channels, compared with the C-ITH. Catalytic tests in the conversion of methanol to light olefin showed that LTA-ITH exhibited enhanced catalyst lifetime and propene selectivity compared with the C-ITH, which is reasonably attributed to the different locations of Al species in their respective ITH frameworks.

Tailoring microstructure and mechanical properties of nacre-architecture (TiBw-TiB2p)/Al hybrid composites by particle grading

Jidong Zhang,Xuexi Zhang,Mingfang Qian,Junjian Zhou,Lin Geng

A nacre-inspired (TiBw-TiB 2p )/Al composites with strength-toughness synergy were prepared by combination of freeze casting and squeeze casting. By adjusting the ratio of fine and coarse TiB 2 particle sizes (F/C), the microstructure, mechanical properties, heterogeneous deformation induced (HDI) strengthening, and toughening mechanisms of the (TiBw-TiB 2p )/Al composites were effectively tailored. The results indicated that the mechanical properties in the longitudinal section were superior to those in the transverse section. The F7C3 composite showed the highest longitudinal compressive strength of 771 MPa, flexural strength of 760 MPa, and plane strain fracture toughness ( K Ⅰc ) of 18.2 MPa⋅m 1/2 and crack-growth toughness ( K Jc ) of 35.1 MPa⋅m 1/2 . The peak HDI stress accounted for more than 60 % of the flow stress and thus HDI strengthening played an important role in improving the composite mechanical properties. Of these, the F10C0 composite had the highest HDI stress in the longitudinal section (431 MPa) while F0C10 had the highest HDI stress in the transverse sections (379 MPa). The outstanding fracture toughness in the longitudinal section was attributed to several toughening mechanisms, including Al deformation, crack deflection, blunting and branching, Al bridging and interfacial debonding, while the poor fracture toughness in the transverse section was mainly related to the lack of a toughening mechanism.

Selective removal of cesium from wastewater by salt-resistant hydrogel fiber-supported Al-doped tin sulfide

Can Liu,Xinru Li,Haojie Ge,Xiaoping Yu,Yafei Guo,Tianlong Deng

The extreme pH and complex composition of radioactive wastewater pose great challenges to the chemical stability and properties of adsorbents. Herein, three kinds of metal-doped tin sulfides were developed by a simple one-pot method for cesium removal. DFT calculations combined with experiments were conducted to reveal their structures, stability, and adsorption properties. It was found that the crystal structures of tin sulfide became more stable after doping by Ni and Al. Particularly, the Al-doped material (NAlSS) exhibited the highest stability and adsorption performance because of the highest −COHP value of the Sn-S bond in NAlSS and the low binding energy between NAlSS and Cs + . The industrial application of the powdery NAlSS was further solved by wet spinning using glutaraldehyde cross-linked sodium alginate and hydroxyethyl cellulose (SHG) as the supporters. The obtained salt-resistant hydrogel fibers (SHG-NAlSS) exhibited excellent adsorption performance and stability in wide pH (2 ∼ 12) and temperature (298.15 ∼ 328.15 K) ranges. The maximum adsorption capacity reached 401.34 mg·g −1 within 10 min. The material was successfully applied for Cs + removal from wastewater, and the distribution coefficient of Cs + reached 255020.33 mL·g −1 . After 10 adsorption–desorption cycles, the adsorbent maintained good stability. These results, along with the fixed-bed adsorption, demonstrate that the developed material can be used as a candidate for Cs + removal from radioactive wastewater.

Synergistic enhancement of persulfate activation by Al-Fe‑carbon hybrid composite for aniline degradation in water

Long Fang,Xi Zheng,Ruina Yuan,Tianyuan Xu,Minwang Laipan,Yijun Cao,Yaowen Xing,Xiahui Gui

Persulfate (PS)-based advanced oxidation process is an excellent technology for removing organic pollutants. Herein, an Al-Fe‑carbon hybrid composite (AlFeOH/CS) by hybridizing bimetal Al-Fe and carbon sphere was synthesized and its ability to activate PS was evaluated. Within 120 min reaction in the presence of PS, 70 % of aniline was removed by FeOH/CS, while >99.9 % of aniline was degraded by AlFeOH/CS. Moreover, AlFeOH/CS exhibited wide pH applicability, relatively high resistance to inorganic anions, and strong stability for PS activation. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and quenching tests revealed that aniline degradation in the AlFeOH/CS/PS system occurred via a radical pathway, with O 2 − the dominant reactive oxygen species. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of AlFeOH/CS was attributed to: Al doping could 1) increase the specific surface area and porosity, exposing more active sites, 2) facilitate electron transfer from Fe atoms to PS, and 3) enhance the generation of carbon-centered persistent free radicals (PFRs). Depending on the carbon-centered PFRs, carbonyl functional groups, sp 2 and sp 3 -hybridized carbon, and Fe/Al hydroxides on AlFeOH/CS, PS was effectively activated to produce free radicals for aniline degradation. These findings provide new insights into the design of functional hydrothermal carbonaceous material with high stability and PS activation efficiency for removing organic contaminants.

Microwave irradiation-assisted isomerization of glucose to fructose over Mg/Al-doped lignin self-assembled nanospheres

Jianrong Shan,Bowen Yang,Yaqiong Su,Gunhean Chong,Luqman Chuah Abdullah,Xinhua Qi,Haixin Guo

Isomerization of glucose to fructose is a key step in achieving high value conversion of biomass. Lignin nanosphere (LN) showing hollow structure were successfully prepared using lignin oligomers as carbon precursors and self-assembly method. On this basis, Mg and Al were doped into lignin nanospheres by electrostatic and coordination interactions to obtain a heterogeneous catalyst (Mg x Al y /LN) with the coexistence of Brønsted base and Lewis acid. In this catalytic system, the synergistic effect of Al(OH) 3 and MgO as the active center of the catalyst promoted the formation of intermediates for the isomerization of glucose to fructose. DFT analysis show that Al(OH) 3 plays a greater role than MgO in promoting the isomerization of acyclic glucose to form fructose. When the Mg/Al ratio of 2:1, the yield of Mg 2 Al 1 /LN catalyzed isomerization of glucose to fructose under microwave irradiation can reach as high as 57.2 %, which could be reused for 5 times and still remain its initial activity. The activation energy was about 39.8 kJ/mol, which was lower than that of most heterogenous catalytic systems, showing good catalytic performance and potential for application.

Selective separation of Fe and Ga from Al-rich HNO3 leach liquor using sequential solvent extraction

Shuyang Shi,Chen Yang,Baozhong Ma,Hui Yang,Zhihe Cao,Yubo Liu,Yongqiang Chen,Chengyan Wang

Ga exhibits enrichment in coal-based solid waste, establishing it as a promising alternative source for Ga recovery. The HNO 3 pressure leaching process effectively achieves simultaneous leaching of Al and Ga while retaining most of the Fe in the residue. However, separating Ga from acidic solutions containing Fe and Al remains a persistent challenge in hydrometallurgy due to their similar physicochemical properties. Herein, a simplified and effective two-stage sequential solvent extraction process using acid phosphorus extractants (P507 and P204) for selective Ga recovery was proposed. Under optimized conditions, P507 removed 97.2 % of Fe from coal gangue HNO 3 leach liquor with limited co-extraction of Ga (10.1 %) and Al (5.7 %). Subsequent P204 extraction recovered 99.2 % Ga with only 9.1 % Al co-extraction from the Fe raffinate. Stripping with 2 mol·L –1 H 2 SO 4 yielded 88.0 % Ga recovery, with the extractants showing excellent regeneration and cycling performance. Mechanistic studies including FT-IR, UV-Vis, ESI-MS, and stoichiometric analysis confirmed coordination through both P = O and P–O–H groups, forming Fe(HA)A 3 and Ga(HL)L 3 complexes (A = P507; L = P204 ligands), respectively. This study presents a highly efficient approach for the separation of Fe/Ga/Al and Ga recovery from HNO 3 leach liquor, featuring exceptionally low acid depletion.

Concrete-inspired closet packing designed Al-doped silica aerogel coatings for fireproof and thermal insulation protection

Yuming Zhang,Wenjian Lin,Cong Li,Xianzhang Dong

Modern civil and industrial fire protection applications demand increasingly rigorous performance standards for thermal insulation materials. While aerogel-based coatings have emerged as promising candidates in recent years, their effectiveness remains constrained by limited aerogel loading capacities, which fundamentally restricts their thermal insulation performance. Here, we fabricate an Al-doped silica aerogel coating inspired by the closet packing design of concrete. The result coatings’ aerogel content could up to 95 %–98 %, which is far beyond the present reported works. Besides, the coating showed ultra-lightweight property (263.36 ± 4.56 mg/cm 3 ), outstanding thermal insulation performance (29.75 mW m −1  K −1 at 25 °C, 168.97 mW m −1  K −1 at 1000 °C), and could work at 800 °C for long-term with backside temperature 258 °C (4 mm thickness). Meanwhile, the result coating showed super fire retardant compared to commercial aerogel coating and fire intumescent coating. This large aerogel content coating with excellent fireproof performance can perfectly match the advanced fire protection requirements, and provide an idea for improving thermal insulation performance of coatings.

A novel method to repair and upgrade spent LFP cathode material by inherent Al impurity doping

Haoxuan Yu,Derun Zhao,Kechun Chen,Meiting Huang,Haitao Yang,Liming Yang,Zhihao Wang,Liang Chen,Xuan Ding,Hui Lv,Xubiao Luo

The increasing retirement of LiFePO 4 (LFP) batteries provides a unique chance for advancing the direct regeneration of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the existence of Al impurities from current collectors during the pretreatment of recycling poses a challenge. In this study, we enhance the direct regeneration process of spent LFP material by utilizing Al impurities to replace some cationic sites in the olivine structure. This approach achieves simultaneous elemental compensation and valence restoration, promoting the regeneration of LFP with stable structure and enhanced Li + diffusion rate. The regenerated LFP with Al doping exhibits an initial discharge capacity of 153.9 mAh g -1 , good rate performance with capacity of 112.1 mAh g -1 at 5 C (1 C = 170 mAh g -1 ), and excellent cycling stability (96.4 % capacity retention after 200 cycles). This strategy introduces a threshold for Al impurities and offers a chance to guide the future direct regeneration of LFP materials.

Trinity System: Leaf-like PVDF/Al@CNTs Composites with Superhydrophobic, Safety, and High Energy-releasing Performance

Pei Yang,Shuang Wang,Huihui Liu,Linghui Meng,Yongping Bai,Jinmei He

The development of multifunctional Metastable intermixed composites (MICs) is a highly coveted objective in this field. Inspired by trees, its excellent ability to grasp soil plays an important role in energy conversion. Here, leaf-like PVDF/Al@CNTs (PDC) colloids with an energy conduction network of CNTs were prepared by strong shearing and precipitation in poor solvent. This trinity system achieved synchronous super-hydrophobicity, high safety, and excellent combustion performance. The synergistic effect of CNTs, micro-clusters of PDC and β-PVDF greatly increased the water contact angle (WAC) of the samples, achieving a WAC of 140° when CNTs were added at 3   wt%. The high conductivity and unique CNTs network enable PDC's security and electromagnetic shielding of PDC. Importantly, the sensitivity of the laser ignition and the ignition delay time were tuned. The reaction process of PDC was characterized by DSC-TG-MS, and the main reaction temperature decreases with the addition of CNTs. Moreover, PDC-1 exhibits the highest ignition pressure, energy release, and combustion rate. The combustion process is characterized by simplified simulations, which verify the important role of the unique network of CNTs in PDC for energy conduction during combustion. This work presents a distinctive approach for multifunctional MICs, demonstrating encouraging potential for various applications in energetic materials.

Unravelling pH-dependent formation and deposition mechanisms of Si–Al complex scale in reverse osmosis systems

Hailan Wang,Rui Wang,Ruobin Dai,Zhiwei Wang

Reverse osmosis (RO) is a leading technology for wastewater/water treatment and resource recovery. The formation of Si–Al complex scale significantly impairs the performance of RO systems. Due to the diverse forms of silica and aluminum species, the scaling process involves both homogeneous and heterogeneous mechanisms, presenting substantial challenges in understanding Si–Al scale formation. Herein, we investigated the scaling mechanism of Si–Al complexes in RO systems under acidic, neutral, and alkaline conditions, focusing on Si–Al interactions in solution and their deposition behavior on membrane surfaces. We found that Si–Al interactions in solution did not directly determine their fouling behavior on RO membranes. In acidic conditions, silicic acid and aluminum species (i.e., Al 3+ ) remained stable in solution but underwent heterogenous polymerization on the membrane surface. The electrostatic shielding and the bridging effects of Al 3+ facilitated the formation of a dense and thick Si–Al complex layer. Under neutral and alkaline conditions, the Si–Al complex primarily underwent homogenous polymerization before depositing on the membrane surface, due to the adsorption of silicic acid by polymeric aluminum hydroxide. The electrostatic repulsion between the Si–Al complex and the membrane resulted in minimal scaling. This work offers comprehensive insights into the pH-dependent scaling behavior of Si–Al complexes in RO processes, providing a theoretical foundation for developing effective scaling control strategies.

A Porous Li–Al Alloy Anode toward High-Performance Sulfide-Based All-Solid-State Lithium Batteries

Jinhui Zhu,Jiayao Luo,Jingyan Li,Senhe Huang,Haozhe Geng,Zhenying Chen,Linan Jia,Yongzhu Fu,Xi Zhang,Xiaodong Zhuang

Compared to lithium (Li) anode, the alloy/Li-alloy anodes show more compatible with sulfide solid electrolytes (SSEs), and are promising candidates for practical SSE-based all-solid-state Li batteries (ASSLBs). In this work, a porous Li–Al alloy (LiAl-p) anode is crafted using a straightforward mechanical pressing method. Various characterizations confirm the porous nature of such anode, as well as rich oxygen species on its surface. To the best knowledge, such LiAl-p anode demonstrates the best room temperature cell performance in comparison with reported Li and alloy/Li-alloy anodes in SSE-based ASSLBs. For example, the LiAl-p symmetric cells deliver a record critical current density of 6.0 mA cm −2 and an ultralong cycling of 5000 h; the LiAl-p|LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 full cells achieve a high areal capacity of 11.9 mAh cm −2 and excellent durability of 1800 cycles. Further in situ and ex situ experiments reveal that the porous structure can accommodate volume changes of LiAl-p and ensure its integrity during cycling; and moreover, a robust Li inorganics-rich solid electrolyte interphase can be formed originated from the reaction between SSE and surface oxygen species of LiAl-p. This study offers inspiration for designing high-performance alloy anodes by focusing on designing special architecture to alleviate volume change and constructing stable interphase.

Synthesis of form-stabilized Al/Al2O3 composite phase change materials for high-temperature thermal energy storage

Nan Sheng,Wenlong Li,Shasha Lu,Renjie Liu,Songcen Shi,Hongzhi Liu,Chunyu Zhu

Phase change thermal storage represents a valid solution to the problem of renewable energy indirection. Metals have a high heat storage density and high thermal conductivity, making them a promising material for high-temperature phase change materials, yet limited in application by corrosion. As a solution, a boiling and cold pressing with subsequent calcination method was proposed for the development of shape-stabilized PCMs with Al as a phase change material and Al 2 O 3 as the matrix. A three-step preparation process was involved: (1) Generation of precursor shell layer on the surface of Al micropowder by boiling water treatment. This step was crucial for leakage prevention. (2) Stabilization and composite formation of the phase change material by cold pressing. In this step, we carefully studied the effect of pressure on the structural strength of composite phase change materials (PCCMs) and finally concluded that 10 MPa was the optimal cold pressure. (3) Formation of structurally stable PCCM was finalized by thermal oxidation treatment. The phase transition temperature and latent heat of phase transition of PCCM were 653°C and 68 J/g, respectively. Importantly, these phase transition properties remained consistent over 100 thermal cycles, indicating a good cycling property. These results inform the application of metallic Al in high-temperature thermal storage.
