Severe charge recombination and inherent photocorrosion are two critical bottlenecks restricting the application of metal sulfide photocatalysts for solar-to‑hydrogen conversion. Herein, a “Geometric-Electronic Synergistic” strategy is proposed to overcome these limitations by constructing a high-entropy Schottky junction photocatalyst, where spinel-phase high-entropy sulfide (HES, CoNiCuTiVS x ) nanoparticles are anchored on hollow CdS spheres (CdS-h) via electrostatic self-assembly. Benefiting from the entropy stabilization effect, the multi-component HES maintains a high-symmetry spinel structure and exhibits superior metallic-like conductivity. Experimental characterizations combined with Density Functional Theory calculations reveal the underlying mechanism: Electronically, the HES possesses a significantly higher work function, inducing a substantial Fermi level difference upon contact with CdS. This establishes a robust Schottky junction with a strong built-in electric field, which acts as a powerful driving force for ultrafast interfacial electron extraction, thereby suppressing photocorrosion. Geometrically, the nanoscale thin-shell architecture of the hollow CdS physically shortens the bulk diffusion distance of photogenerated carriers, minimizing transport losses. Consequently, the optimized CH-20 composite achieves a remarkable hydrogen evolution rate of 11,942.23 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 under visible light, which is 3.94 and 2.55 times higher than that of pristine CdS-h and the binary Co 9 S 8 -based composite, respectively. This work not only demonstrates the superiority of high-entropy materials in modulating Schottky barriers but also provides a paradigm for designing efficient photocatalysts by integrating morphology engineering with entropy engineering.

The new Zn-CDs were synthesized with a fluorescence quantum yield of 31.72%. • Zn-CDs exhibited strong antibacterial activity against both E. coli and S. aureus. • Zn-CDs were successfully utilized for MTZ detection by IFE and static quenching. Bacterial infections pose a major global health threat, highlighting the need for the development of effective antibacterial materials. Metronidazole (MTZ), a widely used antimicrobial agent, has raised concerns due to its misuse, emphasizing reliable detection methods. In this study, we synthesized zinc-doped carbon dots (Zn-CDs) via a hydrothermal method using hexahydrate zinc nitrate and histidine as precursors. Zn-CDs were thoroughly characterized for their optical properties, antibacterial activity, cytotoxicity, and potential for MTZ detection. Zn-CDs displayed a uniform spherical morphology with an average particle size of 4.65 nm and excitation-dependent fluorescence. Antibacterial assays revealed their effectiveness against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ), with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 313 μg/mL for both bacterial strains. Its antibacterial mechanism relied on the damage of bacterial cell membranes. Furthermore, Zn-CDs exhibited low cytotoxicity and hemolytic activity showing their excellent biocompatibility. Zn-CDs also displayed remarkable photostability, salt tolerance, and pH adaptability, making them suitable for diverse environments. For MTZ detection, Zn-CDs exhibited high specificity and anti-interference properties, with the fluorescence quenching mechanism attributed to the static quenching and internal filter effect (IFE). Furthermore, Zn-CDs were successfully applied to detect MTZ residues in honey, with recovery rates ranging from 92.3% to 101.7%. Overall, this study highlights the dual functionality of Zn-CDs as antibacterial agents and fluorescence-based sensors, offering promising applications in environmental monitoring and food safety analysis. Early diagnosis and precise treatment of liver cancer represent critical directions in medical research. Theranostic strategies integrating bioimaging and drug delivery have demonstrated significant potential, offering advantages such as high precision, enhanced imaging clarity, and improved therapeutic efficacy. Room temperature phosphorescence carbon dots@silica composites (RTP CDs@SiO2) stand out in bioimaging for their excellent properties such as long phosphorescence lifetime and low toxicity. However, their irregular morphology and large particle size restrict applications in drug delivery. In this study, RTP CDs@SiO2 composites were synthesized in an an aqueous solution via three approaches with different alkaline additives: no alkaline additive, ammonia solution, and arginine. Through the synergistic effect of the guanidine group, amino group, and carboxyl group in arginine molecules, nanoparticles with an average particle size of 14.2 nm, a phosphorescence lifetime of 1398.91 ms, and a visible afterglow duration of 12 s were prepared. The resultant composites possessed favorable biocompatibility with low toxicity, as well as outstanding phosphorescence imaging performance both in vitro and in vivo. The RTP CDs drug delivery system (CDs@SiO2-HA-DOX) was further constructed by loading the targeting molecule hyaluronic acid (HA) and the chemotherapy drug doxorubicin (DOX) via electrostatic adsorption and covalent coupling using CDs@SiO2 as a carrier. Results demonstrated that this system achieved a maximum drug loading capacity of 49.39% and exhibited pH-dependent DOX release under weakly acidic conditions. In vitro antitumor experiments revealed that CDs@SiO2-HA-DOX reduced the viability of HepG2 cells to 22.95%. In vivo studies using tumor-bearing mouse models confirmed a tumor inhibition rate of 75.48%, demonstrating significant antitumor efficacy. This work represents the first successful application of RTP CD composites in drug delivery. The developed system shows great promise as a theranostic candidate for liver cancer by integrating drug delivery and RTP imaging, highlighting its significant potential for cancer therapy applications.

Due to the consumption of traditional fossil fuels, human society faces global energy shortages and increasing environmental pollution problems. To address water pollution caused by the abuse of antibiotics and to promote green hydrogen production. In this paper, a Bi 2 WO 6 /CdS S-scheme heterojunction was prepared to realize the photocatalytic levofloxacin (LEV) degradation coupled with hydrogen production reaction. Under the introduction of [Co(bpy) 3 Cl 2 ] (CoBpy) as a molecular photosensitizer, the hydrogen production activity of Bi 2 WO 6 /CdS increased remarkably to 5395.9 μmol g −1 h −1 , meanwhile, the degradation rate of LEV could reach 87.5 %, which was much higher than that of the pure phase material and exhibited excellent stability over five cycles. The enhanced photocatalytic activity originates from the S-scheme heterojunction mechanism that enables the oxidizing and reducing abilities of the material to be fully exploited, meanwhile the sensitization of CoBpy further optimizes the charge transfer pathway, which realizes the combination of visible-light-driven wastewater treatment and green hydrogen production. Our findings provide an efficient and safe approach to environmental remediation and green energy production for a sustainable energy future.

A novel strategy is reported for the synthesis of glutathione (GSH)-protected bimetallic nanoclusters, Au-AgNCs@GSH, and its fabrication with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) into a film sensor for H 2 S gas detection. Meanwhile, carbon dots (CDs) synthesized from polyethyleneimine (PEI) are introduced as an internal standard to correct the photobleaching of Au-AgNCs@GSH and uniformity of film. The joining of it greatly improves the chemical and structural stability of the composite film via multi cross-linking between PEI, PVA, and GSH. The PVA-AuAgNCs-CDs film exhibits an emission-quenching response to H 2 S gas at atmosphere, which is highly repeatable, fast, sensitive, and can distinguish H 2 S from other poisonous gases. Finally, the in-depth mechanism investigations reveal that the quenching response is attributed to decomposition of Au-AgNCs@GSH and the formation of Au 2 S and Ag 2 S in the composite film. As a sensor, the PVA-supported film combines the functions of fluorescent metal nanoclusters and polymer CDs, providing a portable device for the rapid detection of H 2 S gas in air.

Abnormally expressed miRNAs have been employed as crucial indicators for the diagnosis and prognosis of disease. It is essential to develop quick, affordable, accurate, and multiplexed methods for miRNA detection. In this study, polyethylene glycol (PEG) hydrogel microparticles were used as solid-phase carriers for the hybridization chain reaction (HCR) in combination with cation-exchange fluorescence amplification, thus enabling the development of a new method for miRNA determination. The assay was sensitive with the detection limit for miRNA let7a equal to 46 pM. The assay was specific, the base-mismatched sequences of miRNA let7a were distinguished, and the serum matrix did not cause any interference. Moreover, by integration with a microfluidic chip, the throughput was significantly enhanced and the process was noticeably simplified. With further development, the developed method may be suitable for practical clinical analysis.

Low charge carrier separation and transfer efficiency continues to be the major obstacle to harvest solar energy to split hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) as hydrogen source for H 2 production with value-added utilization for waste by-products. Herein, we designed a Type-II core/shell AgIn 5 S 8 /CdS (AIS/CdS) quantum dots (QDs) photocatalyst capped with short-chain inorganic sulfide ion (S 2− ) ligand with dual charge-accepting engineering to promote charge carrier extraction and faster photogenerated electron transfer. Transient absorption spectroscopy analysis demonstrates that the excited electrons are fast injected into CdS shell from AIS core within 1.7 ps, instead of transferring to sub-bandgap states. Consequently, the highest photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of AIS/CdS QDs with S 2- ligand is 12.74 mmol g −1 h −1 that is more than four times of pristine AIS core. This work offers insightful guidance on the rational design of charge-accepting engineering QDs-based photocatalysts, thereby stimulating solar to hydrogen generation and resource utilization of pollutants.

An off–on fluorescence aptasensor was developed for trace thrombin detection based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between CdS QDs and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). Using DNA pairwise hybridization of the aptamer to the complementary DNA (cDNA), the CdS QDs (energy donor) were tightly coupled to the AuNPs (energy acceptor), resulting in the occurrence of FRET and there was a dramatic fluorescence quenching of CdS QDs (turn off). When the thrombin was added to the fluorescence aptasensor, the specific binding of the aptamer to the target formed a G-quadruplex that caused the AuNPs receptor to detach and the DNA duplex to be disassembled. The process would inhibit the FRET which contribute to the recovery of fluorescence (turn on) and an “off–on” fluorescence aptasensor for thrombin detection was constructed accordingly. Under optimal conditions, the fluorescence recovery showed good linearity with the concentration of thrombin in the range of 1.35–54.0 nmol L−1, and the detection limit was 0.38 nmol L−1 (S/N = 3, n = 9). Importantly, the fluorescence aptasensor presented excellent specificity for thrombin, and was successfully applied to the quantitative determination of thrombin in real serum with satisfactory recoveries of 98.60–102.2%.

Properly engineered heterojunction photocatalysts warrant a more effective way to facilitate the separation of photoexcited electron-hole pairs and consequently bolster the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance. Herein, 3D bicontinuous nanoporous reduced graphene oxide (np-rGO) is served as a free-standing supporting matrix for the anchorage of CdS nanoparticles to obtain the highly efficient photocatalysis system for hydrogen production . The bicontinuous internal ligament and open nanopores in 3D nanoporous heterojunction are conducive to multiple reflecting and scattering of the incident light, leading to improved light absorption and utilization capacity. Moreover, the construction of p-n heterojunction with staggered band alignment is achieved in CdS/np-rGO to accelerate the transport of photo-excited carriers. The constructed CdS/np-rGO p-n heterojunction achieves a corresponding hydrogen generation rate of 2171.23 μmol g −1 h −1 , which is 3.6 times in comparison with bare CdS. DFT calculations also indicate the preferable photocatalytic performance of CdS/np-rGO could be assigned to the ideal interfacial charge rearrangement on the heterointerface, which optimizes the H* adsorption kinetic energies and leads to a remarkable enhancement in the charge separation efficiency. It is anticipated this work could provide new sight for making the best usage of sunlight to produce solar fuel.

The construction of heterojunctions is considered as an effective strategy to boost catalytic degradation activity of photo-Fenton catalyst. Herein, a series of CdS@CuS/g-C 3 N 4 (CC-x/CN) heterojunctions have been successfully prepared by hydrothermal and cation exchange process, which have been applied for the removal of methyl orange (MO) via photo-Fenton process. The results demonstrate that the exchange of Cu 2+ for Cd 2+ on g-C 3 N 4 could inhibit the aggregation of CdS@CuS and increase the light absorption range and the active sites. Under visible light illumination, CC-10/CN (molar ratio of CuS to CdS is 10%) exhibits the optimal photo-Fenton-like catalytic performance with the degradation efficiency of 96% towards MO (40 mg L −1 ) and the total organic carbon removal rate of 75% within 35 min illumination. The apparent reaction rate constant of CC-10/CN (0.088 min −1 ) is approximately 22 and 6.29 times higher than those of pure g-C 3 N 4 and CdS@CuS (molar ratio of CuS to CdS is 10%), respectively. The enhanced photo-Fenton catalytic activity of CC-x/CN is mainly ascribed to the formation of the photo-Fenton effect between CC-10 and g-C 3 N 4 , which promotes the conversion and recycling of Cu 2+ and Cu + . Meanwhile, the successful formation of the heterojunctions reduces the recombination rate of carriers. In addition, the cycling experiments demonstrate that CC-10/CN possesses favorable stability and recoverability. Overall, the well-designed CC-x/CN heterojunctions reveal desirable potential application in the effective treatment of sewage via photo-Fenton process.

Solar-to-hydrogen conversion is a potential technology to help end our dependency on fossil fuels. The electron cloud structure of metal sulfide is more suitable than oxide for the preparation of photocatalytic materials. However, their low production rate has always been a limiting factor. Precious metal cocatalysts, such as Pt, Pd, Au, and Ru, are often introduced to tackle this problem. But in fact, their high price and scarcity limit their large-scale application in photocatalysis . At the same time, photooxidation corrosion has always been a problem in the application of metal sulfide. In the present study, we loaded cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanorods with noble metal-free nickel-based cocatalyst at room temperature. The reaction conditions were mild, making the process facile and easy to control. The nickel-based cocatalyst successfully prevented the oxidative photocorrosion of CdS, making the composite material stable for an extended time. The suggested non-noble metal-based cocatalyst had better performance than the traditional Pt cocatalyst. The hydrogen production rate was 58 mmol/g/h at the reaction time of 5 h, and the cumulative hydrogen production was kept up to 35 h with the same evolution rate. Overall, the results were striking to serve a new idea for efficient and persistent photocatalytic hydrogen generation using a non-noble metal-based photocatalyst .

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting provides a promising strategy for the production of clean hydrogen fuel. Herein, a new CdS@ZnO core–shell nanorod arrays (NRAs) is successfully constructed by atomic layer deposition (ALD) for H 2 evolution from PEC water splitting. The CdS@ZnO 200 obtained after 200 ALD cycles presents a significantly enhanced PEC H 2 evolution rate of 21.64 μmol·h −1 ·cm −2 , which is about 9.4 times of pristine CdS NRAs (2.31 μmol·h −1 ·cm −2 ). The reasons for the improved PEC H 2 evolution performance can be ascribed to several aspects: firstly, the Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism formed between CdS core and ZnO shell promotes the effective spatial separation of photo-induced electrons and holes; secondly, the close contact between the two semiconductors resulted from ALD process helps to reduce the transfer resistance of charge carriers. In addition, the CdS core is tightly wrapped by ZnO shell, which helps to prevent the photo-corrosion of CdS core. This work provides a new type of photoanode material suitable for PEC H 2 evolution from water splitting, and provides an efficient anti-corrosion method for the use of photocorrosive semiconductor materials.
