The peroxone (O 3 /H 2 O 2 ) process has long suffered from inefficient performance for water decontamination at acidic pHs. Herein, we find the evident capability of trace Ce(III) to boost the acidic peroxone process. In contrast to the negligible degradation (∼6% in 60 min) of oxalic acid (OA) as a recalcitrant compound in the O 3 /H 2 O 2 system, efficient removal of OA (∼95 %) was achieved by introducing trace Ce(III) (0.30 µM). OA was identified as an effective ligand activating Ce(III) by forming the Ce(III)-OA complex, which served as the catalytic active component to accelerate the decomposition of O 3 and H 2 O 2 to produce •OH and promote the co-degradation of refractory pollutant atrazine and ibuprofen. The remarkable catalytic activity of trace Ce(III) for peroxone reaction resulted from the efficient interconversion of Ce(III/IV) relying on both the favorable electron transfer from the ternary Ce(III)-OA-hydroperoxo complex to O 3 and the rapid reduction of Ce(IV) back to Ce(III) mainly by H 2 O 2 . Furthermore, the catalytic performance of Ce(III) for peroxone process outperformed Fe(II), Cu(II), and Co(II). This study puts forward an effective method to extrapolate the applicability of the peroxone (O 3 /H 2 O 2 ) process to the acidic range and enlightens the development of Ce-catalyzed peroxone processes.

The excessive use of tetracyclines (TCs) poses a significant threat to human health, necessitating the development of convenient, rapid, and intelligent detection methods for monitoring TCs residues in food products. In this work, we present a heterogeneous-structured Eu/Ce-MOFs ratiometric fluorescence sensor. This sensor demonstrates excellent stability and high accuracy for TCs detection, with detection limits of 73.0 nmol/L for tetracycline (TC), 51.7 nmol/L for oxytetracycline (OTC), and 54.9 nmol/L for doxycycline hydrochloride (DOX). The Eu/Ce-MOFs ratiometric fluorescence sensor successfully quantified to TC, OTC, and DOX in pork and milk samples and achieved satisfactory recoveries ranging from 89.3% to 112.9%. Furthermore, a hydrogel-based visual sensing platform integrated with machine learning algorithms has been developed, significantly enhancing the detection accuracy of TC, OTC, and DOX. By combining smartphone imaging with machine learning algorithms, this visual sensing platform provides a dependable approach for TCs analysis.

The excessive use of ofloxacin (OFL) leads to residues in animal-derived foods and poses a threat to human health. Therefore, it is crucial to design a sensitive and reliable detection platform for ofloxacin. In this study, we established a multi-mode sensing platform based on manganese and cerium-doped oxidase-like active carbon dots (Mn, Ce-CDs) for the detection of OFL. The yellow fluorescent substance 2,3-diaminophenothiazine (DAP), produced by the oxidation of o-phenylenediamine (OPD), is used as a colorimetric signal while quenching the fluorescence of Mn, Ce-CDs via fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). Furthermore, the OPD polymer nanoparticles formed by DAP self-aggregation also have excellent photothermal effect. The developed colorimetric/fluorescence/photothermal multi-mode biosensor showed a wide detection range (10 −7 -10 −2 mg/mL) and low detection limit (colorimetric: 2.55 ×10 −9 mg/mL, ratiometric fluorescence: 19.1 ×10 −9 mg/mL, photothermal: 58.6 ×10 −9 mg/mL) in the quantitative detection of OFL. It could be applied to the detection of actual samples with satisfactory results.

A defect-rich carbon catalyst with highly dispersed Fe/Zn/Ce species (FeZnCe-NC-1000) is synthesized via a controllable high-temperature pyrolysis strategy. Electrochemical characterizations reveal that FeZnCe-NC-1000 exhibits enhanced oxygen reduction reaction activity in 0.1 M KOH, featuring favorable kinetics and a dominant 4-electron transfer pathway. It also shows excellent durability with minimal performance degradation after 5000 cycles and strong methanol tolerance. When integrated into zinc-air batteries, FeZnCe-NC-1000 outperforms commercial Pt/C, delivering superior open-circuit voltage, discharge rate performance, specific capacity, and maximum power density. These results demonstrate that FeZnCe-NC-1000 is a promising non-precious metal catalyst with great potential for practical applications in energy conversion and storage systems.

This study compared the coagulation performance, floc characteristics, and algal cell integrity between cerium-based coagulants and polyaluminum chloride (PAC). Under optimal dosage (6 mg Ce/L), both CAN (Ce(IV)-based) and CCl (Ce(III)-based) exhibited comparable algal removal efficiency to PAC (>90 %), while generating larger flocs (>1200 µm) that settled rapidly (90 % within 5 min). However, CAN caused significant algal cell lysis during floc aging, whereas CCl exhibited minimal cell damage. Analysis of CCl flocs revealed a distinct increase in the Ce(IV) concentration post-coagulation, accompanied by pronounced phosphate and carboxyl peaks on the floc surface. Further investigation into the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) during algal coagulation proved that the coagulation mechanism of CCl proceeded in two steps: 1) Anchoring of the coagulant onto the algal surface via strong adsorption of phosphate and carboxyl groups; 2) Synergistic interactions between algae and EPS, which induced partial oxidation of Ce(III) to Ce(IV), triggering in-situ hydrolysis of Ce(IV). This process generated large floc structures and the subsequent coagulation targeted to algae. This study highlights CCl as an eco-friendly and effective alternative with high algal removal and low toxicity (attributed to reduced Ce(IV) dosage), offering practical advantages for water treatment applications.

The synthesis of multielement composite oxide nanomaterials containing Ce, Zr, Y, and Yb was investigated using a micro confined jet mixer reactor operated in continuous mode under supercritical water conditions. The obtained nanoparticles were characterized using ICP-AES, SEM-EDS, FTIR, Raman spectroscopy, XRD, and TEM. All samples exhibited a uniform particle shape and a narrow particle size distribution. An analysis of the d-spacing results using selected electron area diffraction (SAED) patterns confirmed the production of cubic-phase crystals. A BET test was employed to determine the specific surface area of the prepared nanoparticles. OSC and TPR techniques were utilized to characterize the oxygen storage capacity and reduction performance of the obtained samples, with an analysis conducted to determine how the different proportions of elements affected the performance of multielement mixed oxides. The ionic conductivity of multielement composite oxide was measured using alternating current impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and the impact of Y, Ce, and Yb on the electrolyte material’s ionic conductivity was analyzed. Keywords:confined jet mixer;multielement composite oxide;continuous hydrothermal flow synthesis;oxygen storage capacity;ionic conductivity

Heavy metal pollution is becoming increasingly severe, and rare earth elements (REEs) play a crucial role in influencing the environmental impact of heavy metals. Mixed heavy metal pollution presents a significant challenge due to its complex effects. While many studies have focused on single heavy metal pollution, relatively few have examined the pollution caused by rare earth-heavy metal composites. This study investigated the toxic effects of Ce-Zn compound pollution on maize roots and used the integrated biomarker response (IBR) to assess the toxicity of different concentrations of Ce-Zn compound pollution on maize roots. The results showed that Ce-Zn compound pollution had a threshold effect: promoting maize growth at low concentrations but inhibiting growth at a threshold concentration of Ce 50 mg/kg-Zn 50 mg/kg. Ce-Zn compound pollution-induced oxidative stress in maize. When the pollution concentration exceeded the threshold, the H₂O₂ content in maize roots increased by 3.30 and 3.56 times, respectively, compared to the CK group, while the O₂⁻ content increased by 1.45 and 1.48 times, respectively. Cell structure damage was observed, and the levels of antioxidant enzymes—peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT), and superoxide dismutase (SOD)—in maize roots gradually increased. At low concentrations, the Ca²⁺ absorption rate in maize roots increased by 82.99 % compared to CK. By regulating the Ca²⁺ concentration, the absorption of H⁺ and other ions was affected, enhancing intracellular enzyme activity and improving the tolerance of maize roots to compound pollution. These findings enhance our understanding of the harmful effects of combined pollution from rare earth metals and heavy metals on plants.

Rational design of heterojunction is of vital importance for addressing the rapid recombination problem of photogenerated charge carriers in photoreactions. Herein, a highly efficient Z-scheme heterojunction with interfacial Zn-O-Ce bonds was successfully fabricated by hybridizing 3D flower-like hierarchical ZnCo 2 O 4 (ZCO) microspheres with CeO 2 nano particles (NPs) and used to photocatalytic remove multiple pollutants. These features of Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism and chemically bonded interface not only reserved the strong oxidation–reduction ability of CeO 2 /ZCO hybrid but also speeded up electron migration from CeO 2 to ZCO. Meanwhile, the 3D hierarchical structure provided rich photocatalytic reaction sites and increased light harvesting ability. Thus, the as-prepared CeO 2 /ZCO displayed an extraordinary photocatalytic decomposition of Ciprofloxacin (CIP) and Basic Fuchsin (BF), removal rate as high as 87.6 % and 90.7 %, respectively. This work can enlighten a new insight to design versatile hetero-catalysts for solar energy conversion.

We report a hydrothermal engineering strategy to synergistically regulate structural barriers, oxygen vacancy-driven redox cycling, and surface functionalization in Ce-NiCo-LDH coatings for ultralong corrosion protection. Vertically aligned LDH nanosheets constructed a tortuous labyrinth barrier to physically impede corrosive species penetration. Oxygen vacancies acted as electron reservoirs to drive Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ redox cycling, enabling dynamic passivation repair via preferential Ce 4+ → Ce 3+ reduction at vacancy sites. Surface functionalization further enhanced protection through two independent pathways: CTAB induced interlocked fibrous nanostructures for mechanical reinforcement, while PFDT grafting formed a fluorine-rich hydrophobic barrier through C-F dipole interactions. EIS characterization demonstrated a 3.6-fold enhancement in charge transfer resistance (Rct = 5.1 × 10 5 Ω·cm 2 ) for the sequentially hydrothermally processed Ce-NiCo-LDHs compared to their single-step counterparts (1.4 × 10 5 Ω·cm 2 ). The CTAB-modified coating achieved 99.0 % inhibition efficiency, while PFDT modification provided long-term hydrophobicity. This triple-scale synergy-structural obstruction, redox-mediated self-healing, and surface engineering-provides a universal framework for designing advanced protective coatings.

The rational design of solid-solution-oxide heterostructure presents a promising pathway to synergize band structure engineering and interfacial charge dynamics in advanced photocatalysis. Herein, a novel S-scheme CeZnO/ZnO heterojunction was fabricated through solid-solution lattice engineering, where Ce-O-Zn covalent bonding networks are strategically constructed at phase boundaries via controlled exceedance of the Ce solubility limit in ZnO matrix. Coupled with Ag nanoparticle-induced localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), this hierarchical system achieves remarkable visible-light-driven tetracycline (TC) degradation (90.4 % within 60 min). The outstanding degradation performance can be attributed to the formation of a built-in electric field at the Ce-O-Zn interface, the presence of oxygen vacancies, and the synergistic catalytic effect of Ag nanoparticles. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental characterizations further reveal that the CeZnO/ZnO heterojunction facilitates S-scheme charge transfer via Ce-O-Zn bonds, improving charge transfer and separation efficiency while preserving the strong redox capability of photo-generated charge carriers. This study provides valuable insights into the design of high-performance heterojunction photocatalysts and carries significant implications for the development of photocatalysis.

Host-guest catalysts are promising for tailored applications but require innovative synthesis strategies. Herein, we report the first ambient aqueous-phase synthesis of bimetallic Ce/Zr MOF-801, followed by acid post-treatment. Utilizing defect engineering, Ce species are preferentially exposed within the robust Zr-MOF-801 substrate. This structural modification substantially enhances the host–guest catalyst’s oxidative desulfurization (ODS) performance. We systematically investigate synthesis parameters, spatiotemporal yield, and defect characterization, and refines catalytic conditions. Post-acid-treated Ce/Zr-MOF-801-H displays augmented external surface area (189 m 2 g −1 ), and exposed acidic sites while upholding the outstanding intrinsic stability of the Zr-MOF-801 substrate. Under optimal conditions (60 °C, 6 min), Ce/Zr-MOF-801-H completely eliminates dibenzothiophene (1000 ppm S), with a turnover frequency of 39.3 h −1 and catalytic activity of 53.2 mmol g −1 h −1 , far surpassing Zr-UiO-66-H. It maintains a desulfurization rate of 96.6% after five cycles. FTIR spectroscopy, quenching experiments, and ESR spectroscopy reveal that the exposed Ce sites serve dual roles: (1) activating the substrate by reducing the electron density of sulfur atoms and (2) facilitating H 2 O 2 into hydroxyl and superoxide radicals, driving ODS. This strategy not only advances industrial ODS applications but also sheds light on the synthesis of MOF-based host–guest catalysts.

Purpose Development of Ce/Cu-modified black ceramics and investigation of the mechanism of anti-osteosarcoma activity. Methods Black ceramics doped with 0.3–0.7 wt% CeO 2 and CuO were prepared and analyzed using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), compression stress-strain tests, weight change, and antibacterial assays. MNNG/HOS and MG63 cells were seeded on ceramic substrates, and their adhesion and morphology were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and phalloidin staining. In vitro, we first assessed the anti-tumor effects of ceramic materials, then validated their impact on cuproptosis by measuring Cu 2+ levels and the expression of related proteins, including SLC31A1, HSP70, and ATP7A. Mitochondrial dysfunction and TCA abnormalities were assessed by measuring mitochondrial membrane potential, reactive oxygen species, mitochondrial structure, TCA cycle metabolites (citric acid and lactic acid), ATP levels, and DLAT and LIAS protein levels. The cuproptosis inhibitor TTM, PI3K activator 740Y P, and AKT activator SC79 were used to explore the relationship between cuproptosis and the PI3K/AKT pathway in osteosarcoma cells treated with Ce/Cu-doped black ceramics. Results Our research confirmed the superior anti-tumor properties of the Ce/Cu-modified black ceramic and its potential mechanisms against osteosarcoma. The Ce/Cu-doped black ceramic caused mitochondrial dysfunction and disrupted TCA cycle metabolism, resulting in cuproptosis in MNNG/HOS and MG63 cells. The PI3K/AKT pathway was involved in cuproptosis in osteosarcoma cells treated with Ce/Cu-modified ceramics. Conclusion Our research confirmed that Ce/Cu-modified black ceramics have superior anti-tumor effects and potential mechanisms, confirming the clinical potential of Ce/Cu-modified black ceramics in cancer treatment and providing theoretical basis for the clinical translation.
