Graphical A 2D/2D hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) and nitride doped molybdenum disulfide (N−MoS 2 ) heterostructure (h-BN/N−MoS 2 ) catalyst was prepared by sonication using a solvothermal method. The catalyst breaks down H 2 O 2 to produce hydroxyl radical and further oxidizes the colorless TMB to produce blue oxTMB. Recently, nanozymes have attracted extensive attention because of their advantages of combining nanomaterials with enzymes. Herein, hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) and nitride-doped molybdenum disulfide (N−MoS 2 ) nano-composites (h-BN/N−MoS 2 ) were synthesized by facile and cost-effective liquid exfoliation with a solvothermal method in nontoxic ethanol solution. The results show that h-BN, as a co-catalyst, can not only dope into the lattice of MoS 2 but also form a heterogeneous structure with MoS 2 NSs. It expanded the layer spacing and specific surface area of MoS 2 NSs, which was beneficial to the contact between the catalyst and the substrate, and resulted in a synergistic enhancement of the catalytic activity of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) with MoS 2 . A colorimetric determination platform of h-BN/N−MoS 2 -TMB-H 2 O 2 was constructed. It exhibited a wide linear range of 1–1000 μM with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.4 μM under optimal conditions, high sensitivity and stability, as well as good reliability (99.4–110.0%) in practice, making the measurement system more widely applicable.1. Currently, developing supercapacitors with robust cycle stability and suitability for wide-temperature-range operations is still a huge challenge. In the present work, few-layer hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets (h-BNNSs) with a thickness of 2–4 atomic layers were fabricated via vacuum freeze-drying and nitridation. Then, the h-BNNSs/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) composite were further prepared using a hydrothermal method. Due to the combination of two two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals-bonded materials, the as-prepared h-BNNSs/rGO electrode exhibited robustness to wide-temperature-range operations from −10 to 50°C. When the electrodes worked in a neutral aqueous electrolyte (1 M Na 2 SO 4 ), they showed a great stable cycling performance with almost 107% reservation of the initial capacitance at 0°C and 111% at 50°C for 5000 charge—discharge cycles.

Lignin is the second largest naturally renewable resource and is primarily a by-product of the pulp and paper industry; however, its inefficient use presents a challenge. In this work, Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles loaded on lignin nanoparticles (Fe₃O₄@LNPs) were prepared by the self-assembly method and it possessed an enhanced peroxidase-like activity. Fe₃O₄@LNPs catalyzed the oxidation of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) in the presence of H₂O₂ to generate a blue color, was observable by the naked eye. Under the optimal conditions, Fe₃O₄@LNPs showed the ability of sensitive colorimetric detection of H₂O₂within a range of 5⁻100 μM and the limit of detection was 2 μM. The high catalytic activity of Fe₃O₄@LNPs allows its prospective use in a wide variety of applications, including clinical diagnosis, food safety, and environmental monitoring.

Atomic H* has been regarded as the key active species for the electrocatalytic hydrodechlorination (ECH), and the electrode design and operation conditions are related to the atomic H* generation. However, there is limited understanding of how the operation parameters affect the atomic H* generation and utilization. Due to the fact that Pd was inefficient in water dissociation step, MnO 2 was combined with Pd to construct a novel Pd/MnO 2 /Ni foam cathode. Cyclic voltammetry confirmed that Pd/MnO 2 /Ni foam cathode with MnO 2 load of 0.51 mg cm −2 possessed the highest atomic H* generation and ECH activity. Excessive Pd load (>0.44 mg cm −2 ) was detrimental to ECH because of the side hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Operation conditions (e.g. applied current and electrolyte concentration) would directly affect the cathode potential, which was an important indicator of the atomic H* generation. The optimal cathode potential was determined to be −0.85 V when the applied current was 10 mA in this study. The electrolyte concentration of 10–15 mM was able to provide sufficient atomic H* for ECH, while excessive input of electrolyte would favor HER but inhibit ECH. ECH at acidic and neutral/alkaline solution underwent different pathways for atomic H* generation and further affect the utilization of atomic H*. After 120 min reaction, >70% of atomic H* could be selectively used for ECH at initial pH of 4.0 and 5.0, while only ∼37% was used for ECH at initial pH of 7.0. This work correlated the reactivity of electrode with the atomic H* and cathode potential, which would provide strategies for ECH catalyst design and operation optimization.

The preparation of ternary hexagonal boron carbon nitride (h-BCN) nanosheets was carried out by doping biomass glucose in situ into hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN). With this method, the construction of a two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor with tunable bandgap and characteristic adsorption ability toward organic molecules was achieved by maintaining the specific structure of h-BN and π-π interactions toward aromatic compounds. The ternary 2D h-BCN nanosheets worked effectively not only as a desirable adsorbent but also as an activator to benzene. Furthermore, the unique 2D h-BCN nanosheets were found to work as effective photocatalysts to convert benzene into phenol with less over-oxidation, leading to the development of a new type of Fenton oxidation reaction as the one-step visible light-driven hydroxylation of benzene. An optimal yield of 14.0% and its selectivity of 88.3% for the photocatalytic production of phenol from benzene were achieved by using h-BCN in the presence of FeCl 3 and H 2 O 2 in sustaining the same reactivity even after 4 cycles. This present study reports the latest development of phenol production from benzene by applying 2D h-BCN nanosheets as an artificial photosynthetic catalyst.

We report on the synthesis of an H-shaped polymer bonding β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) at branch points and influences of attached β-CD on physical properties. First, a poly(ethylene glycol)(PEG)-based functional macroinitiator bearing two azidos and four chlorines at chain-ends (PEG-2N 3 (-4Cl)) was prepared via terminal modification reactions. Then, PEG-2N 3 (-4Cl) was applied to initiate the atom transfer radical polymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide, leading to the synthesis of an H-shaped block polymer with PEG as the central chain and poly( N -isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) as side-arms (PEG-2N 3 (-4PNIPAM)). Azido groups were at the branch points of the polymer. Finally, the click reaction between PEG-2N 3 (-4PNIPAM) and alkynyl monosubstituted β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) afforded another H-shaped polymer with two β-CDs bonding at the polymer branch points (PEG-2CD(-4PNIPAM)). The glass transition temperature ( T g ) and lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of the H-shaped polymer increased after the attachment of β-CD. The self-assembly and thermal responsive behaviors, as well as the encapsulation behaviors of PEG-2CD(-4PNIPAM) were also altered. When temperature was below the LCSTs, PEG-2N 3 (-2PNIPAM) dissolved in water molecularly, whereas PEG-2CD(-4PNIPAM) could self-assemble into nano-sized micelles. After the LCST transitions, PEG-2N 3 (-4PNIPAM) aggregated into micron-sized unstable particles, whereas PEG-2CD(-4PNIPAM) transformed into PNIPAM-cored nanomicelles. Besides, PEG-2CD(-4PNIPAM) can encapsulate doxorubicin below its LCST due to the formation of micelles. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2013

Non-edible cellulose has attracted considerable attention to be converted into valuable platform chemicals. Direct transformation of cellulose to C6 alditols (mannitol and sorbitol) provides a sustainable route. A productive approach is presented in this work using a Ru/C catalyst combined with H+-released boron phosphate in an aqueous phase. A yield of C6 alditols as high as 74.9% with a 91% conversion of cellulose is achieved. By adding silica–alumina materials, the yield of C6 alditols can be improved to 93.5% with complete conversion. The acid sites gradually released from boron phosphate under hydrothermal conditions could promote the hydrolysis of cellulose without significant degradation of glucose. Furthermore, the interaction of boric acid with C6 alditols may form borate–polyol complexes, which can enhance the stability of the C6 alditols to avoid further hydrogenolysis and dehydration of the C6 alditols formed. Due to the adsorption ability of the substrate, the addition of silica–alumina materials with a high content of silica leads to improved performance.

Electrochemical oxidization of crude ethylene glycol (EG) to fine chemicals driven by sustainable energy is an eco-friendly solution to the upcycling of end-of-life polyethylene terephthalate (PET) wastes. Here, pseudo Ag x -Pt y Pd z core–shell electrocatalyst capable of hybrid oxidation of EG to formate (FA) is designed and synthesized. The trimetallic system consists of Ag nanowire and ultrathin PtPd alloy skin with defects, such as holes and grooves. The defects expose the Ag core to the surroundings and convert Ag 0 to Ag 2+ active species at appropriate potential (> 1.2 V vs RHE). Thus, hybrid EG oxidization reaction is realized on the Ag x -Pt y Pd z electrocatalyst, where PtPd skin catalyzes EG oxidization through conventional Faradaic electrode process owing to inherent activities of Pt and Pd, while Ag 2+ serves as auxiliar oxidant to oxidize EG/intermediates (non-Faradaic reaction). Such a hybrid oxidization strategy reinforces the removal of adsorbates on Ag x -Pt y Pd z electrocatalyst and refresh the active sites timely. Eventually, ultrahigh specific activity (24.45 A mg −1 PtPd ) and long-term stability (> 3000 h at current density ≥ 400 mA cm −2 ) are delivered by the system. The finding of Ag 2+ -enhanced alcohol oxidization reactions introduces a new paradigm for designing high-performance electrocatalysts for energy and environmental applications.

Calcium silicate hydrates (C–S–H) is the primary product of cement hydration, and its structure and properties substantially influence the mechanical performance of cement-based materials. However, in practical applications, pure C–S–H has some shortcomings, such as susceptibility to microcracking and high porosity, which can reduce the durability and overall mechanical performance. To solve these problems, two different sizes of cellulose (microcrystalline cellulose nanoparticles and carboxylated cellulose nanofibers) were used to modify C–S–H nanocomposites, which were synthesized by hydrothermal synthesis. The characterization of the composites was analyzed in detail using methods such as TEM, FT-IR, and TGA. The results of these methods showed that cellulose was uniformly dispersed in the C–S–H matrix on the nanoscale, which formed an interwoven mesh structure. The mechanical properties of the cement paste were tested, including flexural strength and compressive strength. In addition, the cement paste containing the nanocomposites was analyzed by SEM, XRD and hydration heat tests. The results of these tests showed that the seed effect of C–S–H and the effective bridging effect of needle-like cellulose crystals on crack extension significantly improved their mechanical properties.

Developing highly active and durable air cathode catalysts is crucial yet challenging for rechargeable zinc-air batteries. Herein, a size-adjustable, flexible, and self-standing carbon membrane catalyst encapsulating adjacent Cu/Na dual-atom sites is prepared using a solution blow spinning technique combined with a pyrolysis strategy. The intrinsic activity of the Cu-N 4 site is boosted by the neighboring Na-containing functional group, which enhances O 2 adsorption and optimizes the rate-determining step of O 2 activation (*O 2 → *OOH) during the oxygen reduction reaction process. Meanwhile, the Cu-N 4 sites are encapsulated within carbon nanofibers and anchored by the carbon matrix to form a C 2 -Cu-N 4 configuration, thereby reinforcing the stability of the Cu centers. Moreover, the introduction of Na-containing functional groups on the carbon atoms significantly reduces the positive charge on their outer shell C atoms, rendering the carbon skeletons less susceptible to corrosion by oxygen species and further preventing the dissolution of Cu centers. Under these multi-type regulations, the zinc-air battery with Cu/Na-carbon membrane catalyst as the air cathode demonstrates long-term discharge/charge cycle stability of over 5000 h. This considerable stability improvement represents a critical step towards developing Cu-N 4 active sites modified with the neighboring main-group metal-containing functional groups to overcome the durability barriers of zinc-air batteries for future practical applications.

Calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) is considered a novel early strength agent, showing immense potential in enhancing the early strength of cement-based materials. Polycarboxylate (PCE) is widely used as a dispersant in the synthesis of nano-C-S-H to prevent agglomeration during synthesis. However, a comprehensive investigation is still required to establish a stable method for preparing stable C-S-H/PCE nanocomposites using chemical co-precipitation. This study employed orthogonal experiments, range analysis, variance analysis, and multi-index matrix analysis to explore the effect of the chemical co-precipitation synthesis process on the stability of C-S-H/PCE nanocomposites. It conclusively identified the calcium-to-silicon (C/S) ratio as the sole significant influencing factor, establishing optimal synthesis parameters: a C/S ratio of 1.6, stirring at 8000 r/min, a 2-hour reaction time, and a reaction temperature of 30 °C. Additionally, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were utilized to investigate the impact of the C/S ratio on the structure and morphology of C-S-H/PCE nanocomposites. Results indicated that under the optimal synthesis parameters, the average particle size and precipitation rate of the synthesized C-S-H/PCE nanocomposites were 0.122 µm and 0.44%, respectively, exhibiting a 4.7% and 47.6% improvement over the best samples in the orthogonal test. Increasing the C/S ratio decreased the crystallinity of the C-S-H/PCE nanocomposites, resulting in the emergence of multiple crystal structures, compact and ordered morphology, and reduced sedimentation. These findings collectively underscore that C-S-H/PCE nanocomposites with higher C/S ratios exhibit enhanced dispersion and stability, validating the rationality of the optimal synthesis parameters identified in this study.

A new type of SiCf/TiC-Ti3SiC2composite was prepared by the Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) method in this work. The phase transformation and interface cracking of this composite under ion irradiation (single Xe, Xe + He, and Xe + He + H ions) and subsequent annealing were analyzed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), mainly focusing on the interface regions. Xe ion irradiation resulted in the formation of high-density stacking faults in the TiC coatings and the complete amorphization of SiC fibers. The implanted H ions exacerbated interface coarsening. After annealing at 900 °C for 2 h, the interface in the Xe + He + H ion-irradiated samples was seriously damaged, resulting in the formation of large bubbles and cracks. This damage occurred because the H atoms reduced the surface free energy, thereby promoting the nucleation and growth of bubbles. Due to the absorption effect of the SiCf/TiC interface on defects, the SiC fiber areas near the interface recovered back to the initial nano-polycrystalline structure after annealing.
