Catalytically Induced Robust Inorganic-Rich Cathode Electrolyte Interphase for 4.5 V Li||NCM622 Batteries

Zhongsheng Wang,Chunlei Zhu,Jiandong Liu,Xinhong Hu,Yulu Yang,Shihan Qi,Huaping Wang,Daxiong Wu,Junda Huang,Pengbin He,Jianmin Ma

Tailoring inorganic components of cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) and solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) is critical to improving the cycling performance of lithium metal batteries. However, it is challenging due to complicated electrolyte reactions on cathode/anode surfaces. Herein, the species and inorganic component content of the CEI/SEI is enriched with an objectively gradient distribution through employing pentafluorophenyl 4-nitrobenzenesulfonate (PFBNBS) as electrolyte additive guided by engineering bond order with functional groups. In addition, a catalytic effect of LiNi 0.6 Mn 0.2 Co 0.2 O 2 (NCM622) cathode is proposed on the decomposition of PFBNBS. PFBNBS with lower highest occupied molecular orbital can be preferentially oxidized on the NCM622 surface with the help of the catalytic effect to induce an inorganic-rich CEI for superior electrochemical performance at high voltage. Moreover, PFBNBS can be reduced on the Li surface due to its lower lowest unoccupied molecular orbital , increasing inorganic moieties in SEI for inhibiting Li dendrite generation. Thus, 4.5 V Li||NCM622 batteries with such electrolyte can retain 70.4% of initial capacity after 500 cycles at 0.2 C, which is attributed to the protective effect of the excellent CEI on NCM622 and the inhibitory effect of its derived CEI/SEI on continuous electrolyte decomposition.

Synergistic engineering of structural and electronic regulation of In2Se3 for ultrastable Li − ion battery

Guanhua Zhang,Xiaojing Li,Donghai Wei,Huihuang Yu,Jinghua Ye,Song Chen,Wen Zhang,Jian Zhu,Xidong Duan

As a representative two-dimensional layered material, In 2 Se 3 attracts an increasing research interest because of the virtue of high theoretical lithium-ion storage capacity. However, the development of In 2 Se 3- based anode is primarily confined by the poor electronic conductivity and inevitable volume variations. Moreover, the lithium − ion storage mechanism of In 2 Se 3 - based electrode is still not clear. Here, we report a facile construction strategy for metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-derived In 2 Se 3 nanocrystals encapsulated in porous nitrogen − doped carbon conductive matrix (In 2 Se 3 /PNC). The In 2 Se 3 /PNC with porous structure and rich N − doped carbon affords highly efficient channels for rapid transportation of ions and electrons. Meanwhile, as the heterogeneous structure provides sufficient void space to relieve the internal mechanical stress during the repeated charge–discharge processes. Thus, the optimized In 2 Se 3 /PNC − 800 (annealed at 800 °C) electrode exhibits a capacity as high as 1038 mAh/g at 200 mA g −1 , remarkable cycling stability over 2000 cycles and a comparable high-rate capability. Moreover, the reaction mechanism of the In 2 Se 3 with Li + is revealed through in-situ XRD and density functional theory (DFT) simulations. This study may present broad opportunities for reliable construction of high-capacity selenium-based composites for energy storage.

Sb@Ni6 superstructure units stabilize Li-rich layered cathode in the wide voltage window

Bo Cao,Yiwei Li,Mingjian Zhang,Ningyan Cheng,Ming Shen,Bingwen Hu,Jianyuan Li,Zhibo Li,Shenyang Xu,Wenguang Zhao,Ni Yang,Junliang Sun,Shixue Dou,Yang Ren,Haibiao Chen,Liang Yin,Feng Pan

In the practical operations of Li-ion batteries , inevitable deep charge/discharge happens locally due to the intrinsic (de)lithiation inhomogeneity at the electrode and particle level, which would damage the health of batteries and even cause the safety concern. It is essential to develop the stable cathodes operating in a wide voltage window to ensure the health and safety of Li-ion batteries. Herein, we comprehensively investigate the charge/discharge behaviors of a representative Li-rich cathode Li 1.2 Mn 0.54 Ni 0.13 Co 0.13 O 2 in a wide voltage window of 1.0–4.8 V, and reveal that, deep-lithiation would drive violent TM migration and severe Li/TM mixing, thereby leading to the irreversible structural transformation from layered to spinel then to rock salt, eventually causing the fast decay in electrochemical performance. Based on these understandings, a novel Li-rich cathode Li[Li 1/4 Mn 1/2 Ni 1/6 Sb 1/12 ]O 2 is successfully synthesized through introducing aromatic Sb@Ni 6 superstructure units in the TM layers. The introduced Sb@Ni 6 superstructure units can effectively tune the local oxygen environment, suppress TM migration, and stabilize the layered framework under deep lithiation . Finally, a stable charge/discharge is achieved in 1.0–4.8 V. This work deepens the understanding into the structural stability of Li-rich cathodes in a wide voltage window, and benefits the development of high-energy-density and safe cathodes.

A multifunctional polyimide enabled high performance silicon composite anode materials for Li-Ion batteries

Xiang Li,Jianwei He,Yucong Liao,Shaoshan Zhu,Yayun Tang,Hanyang Li,Ning Lv,Yuexin Xu,Yadong Wang

Herein, a conjugate carbonyl polyimide (MF-PI) and nano-silicon composite (MF-PI/Si) is designed and synthesized through a simple one-pot method to confront rapid capacity fading and complicated electrode material preparation in silicon-based electrodes for lithium ion battery . This composite can be directly used to prepare electrode without the need of further adding of binding materials. In this composite, MF-PI acts as binder for powder electrode, active reversible lithiation material, buffering media to alleviate volume change of silicon particles, and coating shell to avoid the direct contact between silicon particles and electrolyte. These functions from MF-PI collectively assigned the MF-PI/Si composite anode material a relative high specific capacity and excellent cycling stability. The electrode prepared by this as-synthesized MF-PI/Si shows preferable electrochemical interface and surface area, further enhancing the electrode kinetics and then electrochemical performance. The improved ionic and electronic conductivity compared to other binder materials also contributes the excellent performance.

Improving the stability of NASICON-type electrolyte with Li metal anode by interfacial modification

Can Huang,Zhuojie Li,Shanshan Duan,Shuhong Xie,Shuoguo Yuan,Shuen Hou,Guozhong Cao,Hongyun Jin

Sodium super-ionic conductors (NASICON)-type electrolyte Li 1.4 Al 0.4 Ti 1.6 (PO 4 ) 3 (LATP), with high ionic conductivity and low cost, is considered as one of the most attractive alternatives to liquid electrolytes . However, the poor interfacial compatibilities of LATP electrolyte in lithium batteries lead to the failure, which hinders its further development. Herein, a MoS 2 coating layer as an artificial solid electrolyte interphase (ASEI) is used for modifying the surface of LATP (MCLATP) via an economical and uncomplicated spin coating method, which not only effectively inhibits the decomposition of LATP, but also in-situ forms a conversion layer consisting of Li 2 S and Mo metal during cycling. The conversion layer can improve the interfacial charge transfer kinetics and decrease the charge transfer resistance . According to interfacial modification of MoS 2 , the symmetric cells show slight polarization, and the Li/MCLATP/LFP cells demonstrate excellent cycling performance over 300 cycles at 1 C. The enhanced batteries performance is ascribed to interfacial modification of MoS 2 as an ASEI layer, which reduces interfacial concentration polarization caused by the formed microcracks around the surface during decomposition of LATP. This work provides a promising strategy to construct the interface between Li metal and solid-state electrolytes for other unstable electrolytes beyond NASICON .

V2O3/VN Catalysts Decorated Free-Standing Multifunctional Interlayer for High-Performance Li-S Battery

Jie Zhao,Yuyan Zhao,Wen-ce Yue,Xue Li,Ning Gao,Yu-jiao Zhang,Chao-quan Hu

The shuttle effect caused by soluble lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) hinders the practical application of lithium–sulfur batteries. The sluggish reaction kinetics of LiPSs results in rapid capacity decay. In this work, we constructed a free-standing multifunctional interlayer decorated with V 2 O 3 /VN catalysts to suppress the shuttle effect and boost the redox reaction kinetics. The introduction of VN with strong chemical adsorption improves the conductivity of V 2 O 3 , which is beneficial for the kinetics of conversion reaction. In addition, the micro/mesopores inside the structure not only facilitate ion diffusion but also buffer the volume change of the sulfur cathode during the cycling process. Benefiting from the synergistic effects, the fabricated cells exhibit a high specific capacity of 1419.5 mAh g −1 at 0.1C. The cell with V 2 O 3 /VN/C exhibits a promising cycling performance over 1000 cycles with a decay rate of 0.037% per cycle at 1C. The synergistic effects of electrocatalysts and conductive carbon material provide inspiration on the development of high-performance Li–S batteries.

Oxygen vacancies in open-hollow microcapsule enable accelerated kinetics for stable Li-S battery

Kai Zhang,Caixia Li,Yu Zhang,Xiaoni Liu,Minghui Wang,Lei Wang

The fast development of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries is catching more attention to improve cycling stability and kinetics. Herein, a hierarchical porous Ni/NiO/C microsphere (NIONC) with openings assembled by ultrathin nanosheets is introduced to solve the poor conductivity, shuttle effect, and slow electrochemical kinetics of Li-S batteries. The structure of NIONC open-hollow microcapsules combines several advantageous properties for the improvement of electrochemical performances. Primarily, a well-developed hollow structure and openings can perform as containers and doors for sulfur immobilization. Therefore, the confinement effect to sulfur species is obtained by this hollow sphere. Secondly, the nanosheets with oxygen vacancies and Ni active sites provide abundant active sites for the chemical absorption of polysulfides. Based on the open structure and oxygen vacancies of Ni/NiO, both the physical absorption and chemical immobilization of sulfur are realized, with high stability and fast kinetics. The S-injected NIONC (NIONC/S) cathode exhibits outstanding rate performance at 5 A g -1 with a high capability of 794 mAh g -1 and excellent long-cycle performance of 653 mAh g -1 after 300 cycles at 1 A g -1 . We proposed a simple and controllable route to fabricate sulfur hosts by structure and composition adjustment, which will inspire the commercial application of Li-S batteries.

A Gel Polymer Electrolyte with 2D Filler-reinforced for Dendrite Suppression Li-Ion Batteries

Zheng Zhou,Xin Pei,Tao Zhang,Liting Wang,Jianhe Hong,Yu Lu,Gang He

Gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) incorporate both the high ionic conductivity of organic liquid electrolyte and the high safety performance of all-solid-state electrolytes (ASSEs), greatly improving the electrochemical performance of solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs). However, the practical application of GPEs is still limited by inferior interface compatibility, lithium dendrites, etc. Herein, we prepared GPEs based on poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) further co-blended the two-dimensional sheet inorganic filler hectorite and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) to improve the mechanical and electrochemical properties of the GPEs. When the content of PMMA and hectorite is optimal, this GPEs have an ionic conductivity of 1.06×10 −3 S cm −1 and outstanding lithium symmetric cells cycle time of more than 3000 h, indicating that the introduction of filler effectively inhibits the growth of lithium dendrites at room temperature. Moreover, the GPEs adopt a relatively simple solution casting method to provide a fresh idea for the synthesis of high-performance GPEs.

Li+ additive accelerated structural transformation of MoS2 cathodes for performance-enhancing rechargeable Mg2+ batteries

Bofei Li,Zhao Li,Haoyuan Chen,Xu Zhang,Shuaijin Wu,Hao Xu,Yingying Yao,Yinghui Li,Xiaolong Li,Zhigang Hu,Richard M. Laine,Jianxin Zou,Kemin Zhang

Rechargeable magnesium ion batteries (MIBs) with intercalation materials as the cathode are found to offer better performance in Li + based electrolytes. Herein, we compare the electrochemical performance of MIBs using all-phenyl complex (APC) electrolytes before and after adding Li +  additives with layered MoS 2 cathodes. We coincidentally describe the lithiation mechanism that leads to a phase transition whereby Li +  additives accelerate a MoS 2 structural transformation from 2H to 1T which accounts for the superior battery performance (150 mAh/g, around two times the capacity of that without Li + additives). In this process, MoS 2 is partly exfoliated into single-layer nanosheets during cycle as evidenced by operando electrochemical synchrotron X-ray diffraction, ex situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy analyses. Accordingly, electrochemical cells with pre-exfoliated MoS 2 nanosheets (liquid phase exfoliation) require fewer activation cycles (50 cycles, a quart of the cycles that using pristine MoS 2 ) in APC electrolyte and better rate performance. Our work thus provides new insight in designing high-performance rechargeable MIBs by optimizing the intercalation cathodes using Li + additives.

Flexible mixed ion-electron conductor fabric for stable and dendrite-free Li-metal anodes

Yun Zhao,Jianhua Yan,Jianyong Yu,Bin Ding

Li-metal batteries are promising candidates for next generation rechargeable batteries. However, the hazards caused by the growth of Li-dendrite and enormous volume fluctuations during cycling hinder its practical applications. Here, to solve these problems, a flexible mixed ion-electron conducting fabric scaffold is constructed by uniformly incorporating Li 0.33 La 0.56 TiO 3 nanoparticles into a 3D carbon nanofiber skeleton. The mixed conductor fabric cannot only homogenize the distribution of electric filed and alleviate volume changes, but also can accelerate the migration and distribution of Li + , thus achieving uniform Li plating/stripping behavior by balanced ion/electron transport. Consequently, the obtained stable and dendrite-free Li-metal anode has a notable cycling stability and rate performance. This work provides a promising direction for the design of practical composite Li-metal anodes.

Clean preparation of Fe2SiO4 coated Fe2O3 integrated with graphene for Li-ion storage application

Ruiping Li,Ali Reza Kamali

Ferric oxide (Fe 2 O 3 ) is an attractive candidate for energy storage applications, including anode of Li-ion batteries due to its low-cost, high availability and large theoretical capacity. However, the mineral suffers from poor cyclability and rate performance due to the combination of rapid disintegration of the compound upon Li-ion insertion and extraction cycles, and poor conductivity of the electrode. Here, for the first time, we report on the clean modification of ferric oxide using corn-derived silica and graphite-derived graphene nanosheets , using a facile calcination-mechanical integration approach, without the involvement of environmentally-problematic raw materials. The product (Fe 2 O 3 @Fe 2 SiO 4 @G) consists of ferric oxide particles coated with iron silicate; and these hybrid particles are integrated with graphene nanosheets. The presence of Fe 2 SiO 4 layers could relieve the volume changes of Fe 2 O 3 involved in the cycling, and also improves the ionic conductivity reducing the interfacial resistance between the electrode and the electrolyte, while graphene nanosheets improves the electrical conductivity of the electrode. Thus Fe 2 O 3 @Fe 2 SiO 4 @G electrode considerably outperforms the initial Fe 2 O 3 with outstanding Li-ion storage capacities of 823 and 422 mA h g −1 recorded at the current densities of 100 and 1000 mA g −1 , respectively, after 300 cycles. Pseudocapacitive behavior of the electrode is found to be 76.6% at 1 mV s −1 , confirming the promotion of surface interactions in the nanostructured hybrid material . This article suggests a clean way of modifying naturally occurring Fe 2 O 3 to be used as the anode of lithium ion batteries.

Fabrication of high performance Mg2+/Li+ nanofiltration membranes by surface grafting of quaternized bipyridine

Yuxi Feng,Huawen Peng,Qiang Zhao

A new monomer (quaternized bipyridine, QBPD) was synthesized to modify the interfacially polymerized polyethyleneimine (PEI) membranes. The QBPD monomer, containing binary charge sites and amine groups (NH 2 ), was anchored to the pristine PEI membrane through the “amine ∼ acyl chloride” amidation reaction. Pure water flux of the QBPD membrane is ∼ 96.6 L m −2 h −1 while the MgCl 2 rejection is maintained at 92%±3. Noteworthy, the flux is ∼ 2.8 times as high as that of the pristine PEI membrane (∼34.0 L m −2 h −1 at 0.6 MPa). Meanwhile, separation performance of the QBPD membrane remains stable in 162 h operation time at 0.6 MPa. When filtrating 50:1 Mg 2+ /Li + mixture, the flux of the QBPD membrane is 81.6 L m −2 h −1 , and the Mg/Li ratio in the permeate was reduced to 8.5:1. Collectively, the QBPD membrane shows good performance compared with recent nanofiltration membranes for Mg 2+ /Li + separation, exhibiting considerable potential for lithium extraction from salt lakes with high Mg 2+ /Li + ratio.
