The increasing complexity and difficulty of surgical procedures have led to a rise in medical errors within clinical settings in recent years. Gastrointestinal diseases, in particular, present significant medical challenges and impose substantial economic burdens, underscoring the urgent need for experiential, high-fidelity gastrointestinal surgical training tools. This study leverages patient-specific computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data, combined with 3D printed manufacturing, to develop hydrogel organ models with tunable performance and tissue-mimicking softness. These properties are achieved by regulating the freeze–thaw cycles, cross-linking agents, and the concentration of incorporated antibacterial nanoparticles in DN hydrogels. Through the application of indirect 3D printing and the “sacrificial material method”, we successfully fabricate organ tissues such as the stomach, intestines, and blood vessels with high precision. In ex vivo surgical training demonstrations, these tissue-like soft hydrogels provide an effective platform for preoperative simulation and surgical training in digestive surgery, accommodating various surgical procedures and accurately simulating intraoperative bleeding. The development of advanced bionic organ models with specific and tunable characteristics based on DN hydrogels is poised to significantly advance surgical training, medical device testing, and the reform of medical education.

Solar interface evaporator has been played an increasingly important role for sewage treatment and desalination, etc. due to its processability, comprehensive application. However, for instance, energy collection rate and utilization efficiency for solar interface evaporation has still an urgent need for improvement. Hence, a series of MXene/ reduced carboxylated carbon nanotubes (RCNT)/ Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) (MCP) solution were directional frozen and then dried by low-temperature vacuum method to successfully prepare a bionic lotus-like multi-layer PVA-based aerogel. Particularly, when the component ratio of the MXene: RCNT: PVA was 6: 24: 70, the water and brine evaporation rate of M 6 /C 24 /P 70 composite aerogel reached respectively 3.35 kg·m −2 ·h −1 and 2.51 kg·m −2 ·h −1 , while for the PVA aerogel were just 0.63 kg·m −2 ·h −1 and 0.37 kg·m −2 ·h −1 . Importantly, the evaporation efficiency for the M 6 /C 24 /P 70 can achieve 132.7 %, which exceeds that of most of evaporators in the published reports and the phenomenon was defined firstly self-accelerating evaporation. This work not only explores the preparation strategy for the distinguished biomimetic solar-derived evaporator, but also broadens the functional application scope of PVA-based aerogels.

Shrimp are nutritious but highly perishable and initial spoilage is not easily recognized. This study developed the bifunctional film for the preservation and freshness monitoring of shrimp. Cinnamon essential oil (CEO) was loaded in PEG-PCL-micelle to improve the stability and long-time release for enhanced antimicrobial activity. Blueberry anthocyanin (BA), pH-responsive for freshness assessment, was incorporated together with CEO-Micelles in Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) electrospunning film. BA's stability and sensitivity were improved due to the high surface area and porosity. The bifunctional film could reduce pH, total viable counts (TVC), total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N), and delay the spoilage of shrimp. The film color change depends on the increased pH by TVB-N during storage. The red, green, blue (RGB) changes and TVB-N values shows linear correlation(R 2 = 0.9703), indicated that bifunctional film can be used as a colorimetric indicator for monitoring shrimp deterioration. This dual-functional film offers a promising strategy for intelligent food packaging.

Efficient utilization of clean solar thermal energy remains for addressing the global energy challenges. Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene exhibits exceptional thermal conductivity and mechanical strength, however, its incorporation into polymer composites is hindered by weak interfacial interactions and poor dispersion. This study presents a covalent engineering strategy to construct MXene/carbon nanotube (CNT) hybrid fillers through esterification crosslinking, where polyacrylic acid (PAA) bridges hydroxyl-rich polydopamine-coated CNTs and MXene nanosheets. The resulting polyvinyl alcohol/MXene/CNTs (PMC) composite films fabricated through solution casting exhibit a unique gradient deposition architecture. The optimized PMC-10 film has excellent mechanical properties with a tensile strength of 216 MPa and a Young's modulus of 3.07 GPa, which are 2.8 and 5.1 times higher than those of the original PVA, respectively. Meanwhile, the composite simultaneously exhibits dual-mode thermal regulation capabilities: daytime photothermal heating enhancement of 45.43 °C and nighttime radiative cooling reduction of 7.47 °C. This diurnal thermal gradient enables continuous 24-h thermoelectric generation. Furthermore, the PMC films display rapid ice-melting capabilities, efficient heat dissipation, and improved flame retardancy. This work establishes a paradigm for designing 1D/2D covalent hybrid fillers in polymer composites that simultaneously enhance mechanical properties and multifunctional performance, significantly expanding their potential for sustainable energy applications.

Real-time sweat pH monitoring offers a non-invasive window into metabolic status, disease progression, and wound healing. However, current wearable pH sensors struggle to balance high electrochemical sensitivity with mechanical compliance. Here we report a stretchable fiber-integrated pH electrode based on a polyaniline-phytic acid-polyvinyl alcohol (PANI-PA-PVA) hydrogel, which combines mechanical elasticity with enhanced electrochemical performance for continuous sweat sensing. Freeze–thaw crosslinking of the hydrogel forms a porous interpenetrating network, facilitating rapid proton transport and stable coupling with dry-spun elastic gold fibers. This wearable device exhibits an ultra-Nernstian sensitivity of 68.8 mV pH−1, ultra-fast equilibrium (<10 s within the sweat-relevant acidic window), long-term drift of 0.0925 mV h−1, and high mechanical tolerance (gel stretch recovery up to 165%). The sensor maintains consistent pH responses under bending and tensile strains, yielding sweat pH measurements at the skin surface during running that closely match commercial pH meters (sweat pH range measured in test subjects: 4.2–5.0). We further demonstrate real-time wireless readouts by integrating elastic gold and Ag/AgCl fibers into a three-electrode textile structure. This PANI-PA-PVA hydrogel strategy provides a scalable material platform for robust, high-performance wearable ion sensing and skin diagnostics.

The oils and organic dyes in wastewater have caused serious damage to the environment, thus, it is very urgent to develop a multifunctional wastewater treatment material by a simple and environment-friendly method. Herein, a layer of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-Fe3+-citric acid (CA) crosslinked structure combined with β-FeOOH particles was firmly anchored on a cotton fabric (CF) through a simple dip-coating and in-situ mineralization method to obtain a robust multifunctional superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic CF (β-FeOOH/PVA/Fe-CA-CF). β-FeOOH/PVA/Fe-CA-CF could separate different immiscible oil/water mixtures with a separation efficiency of exceeding 98.26% and high flux of 25,347 L/m2·h only by gravity, especially, it also could separate oil-in-water emulsions with a separation efficiency up to 94.07%. Moreover, β-FeOOH/PVA/Fe-CA-CF displayed an outstanding photocatalytic degradation capacity to organic dyes and the removal efficiency of methylene blue (MB) could reach 98.5% in 20 min. Meanwhile, the modified CF exhibited satisfactory chemical stability, high temperature and abrasion resistance. More importantly, β-FeOOH/PVA/Fe-CA-CF possessed excellent reusability, whose separation efficiency for petroleum ether/water mixture could reach 96.5% after 20 cycles and removal efficiency of MB was still up to 89% after 12 cycles. Therefore, this work provides a facile strategy for the design of multifunctional biodegradable wastewater treatment materials with high durability.

Current smart cling films for pork preservation often face two key challenges: either they lack real-time freshness monitoring capabilities, or their antibacterial components rely on visible light—limiting penetration depth and easily inducing lipid oxidation in pork. To address these gaps, this work fabricated an electrospun bilayer smart cling film with integrated preservation and monitoring functions. The film comprises a hydrophilic outer layer (polycaprolactone [PCL]/polyvinyl alcohol [PVA]/chitosan [CS]/anthocyanin [ACN], for pH-responsive color indication) and a hydrophobic inner layer (PCL as the matrix, loaded with aluminum phthalocyanine [AlPc], for near-infrared-driven antibacterial activity). We systematically investigated the effect of AlPc loading (5 %–15 %) on film performance. Results showed that the film with 15 % AlPc exhibited the highest level of comprehensive properties among the tested groups: its antibacterial and antioxidant capacities were significantly enhanced, alongside improved physical characteristics—hydrophobicity of the inner antibacterial layer increased by 17 % (in terms of water contact angle), and water vapor transmission (WVT) was reduced by 19 %. Importantly, the film displayed distinct color changes (light red to dark red) in pH 3–11 buffer solutions and during pork storage, enabling real-time freshness monitoring. Moreover, it extended the freshness period of pork to 5 days. These findings demonstrate that the prepared bilayer film effectively addresses the limitations of existing cling films, offering significant potential for simultaneous pork shelf-life extension and freshness monitoring.

With the escalating focus on sustainable food packaging, the concurrent demands for outstanding mechanical robustness and effective photodynamic antibacterial activity in materials designed for fruit preservation have yet to be adequately fulfilled. This study first engineered an innovative food packaging nanocomposite (CPBI) through strategic integration of BiOBr/I heterojunction within a polyvinyl alcohol/carboxymethyl cellulose (PVA/CMC) matrix, integrating photodynamic antibacterial functionality and ultra-high mechanical strength for perishable fruit preservation. The incorporation of BiOBr/I into the natural-polymer network achieved remarkable pathogen inactivation efficiencies of 97.4 % against Staphylococcus aureus and 93.8 % against Escherichia coli O157:H7 via ROS-mediated membrane peroxidation. Simultaneously, the CPBI film displayed superior mechanical properties (tensile strength: 240.1 MPa, fracture strain: 260 %). In practical storage, this film successfully extended the shelf life of cherry tomatoes to 20 days, demonstrating its highly effective fruit preservation capability. This strategy advances the evolution of intelligent packaging solutions, simultaneously addressing the tripartite challenges of material sustainability, postharvest preservation, and foodborne pathogen mitigation.

Hypothesis We synthesized composite microspheres from cellulose nanocrystal (CNC), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and sodium alginate (SA), which were modified with polyethyleneimine (PEI) to introduce a high density of active amino sites onto the surface via the Schiff base reaction. We hypothesized that these (SA/CNC/PVA)@PEI microspheres would have a high adsorption capacity for aqueous diclofenac sodium (DS). Experiments The PEI-modified composite microspheres were characterized and assessed and optimized for aqueous DS adsorption. In addition, the morphology and synthesis mechanism of the adsorbent were studied. Findings The adsorption process showed a good fit with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model (i.e., the process is driven by a chemical adsorption mechanism) and Langmuir adsorption isotherm model (i.e., adsorption follows a single-layer process). Under the optimum experimental conditions (pH: 4.5, adsorption time: 50 min, temperature: 303 K), the maximum adsorption capacity was 418.4104 mg/g, which was relatively high compared to other reported adsorbents. Importantly, after five adsorption–desorption cycles, (SA/CNC/PVA)@PEI showed only a slight loss in adsorption capacity. Compared with other reported adsorbents, the core–shell composite has a good DS adsorptive capacity and high recyclability.

Thin-film composite poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) nanofiltration membranes with improved permselectivity were prepared by incorporating poly(sodium-p-styrene-sulfonate) (PSSNa). Membranes were prepared through surface coating and in situ cross-linking procedure with porous polysulfone (PSf) membrane as support, PVA and PSSNa as coating materials , and glutaraldehyde as cross-linking agent. The effects of the incorporation of PSSNa on the membrane property and performance were investigated experimentally through ATR-FTIR spectroscopy, AFM analysis, streaming potential analysis, contact angle measurement and cross-flow permeation test. It was found that the incorporation of PSSNa resulted in increased membrane pore size, surface hydrophilicity and negative charge and thereby improved membrane permeability and solute selectivity . The PVA–PSf composite membrane exhibited a pure water flux of about 21.0 l/m 2 h, NaCl rejection of 69.8% and Na 2 SO 4 rejection of 96.5% when tested with 500 mg/l electrolyte aqueous solution at neutral pH and 5.0 bar, while the desired PSSNa/PVA–PSf composite membrane exhibited a higher pure water flux of 41.7 l/m 2 h, lower NaCl rejection of 55.7% and higher Na 2 SO 4 rejection of 98.3%. Moreover, compared with the PVA–PSf composite membrane, the PSSNa/PVA–PSf composite membrane possessed increased water flux and dye removal to anionic dye aqueous solution and improved fouling resistance to BSA aqueous solution.

Surface and interfacial regulation is critical for breathable wearable materials that require stable humidity-responsive electrical output together with auxiliary thermal functionality. Herein, we report a lysine-stabilized MXene/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) electrospun nanofibrous membrane in which Ti₃C₂Tₓ MXene is incorporated into a porous and vapor-permeable fiber network. This design promotes interfacial compatibility between MXene and PVA, improves its dispersion within the polymer matrix, and preserves a breathable porous architecture that favors water-vapor transport and interfacial moisture uptake. The 2 mg/mL MXene-Lys/PVA exhibits a strong humidity-dependent electrical response, delivering a resistance response of 10,665 over 40–90% RH, and stable operation during repeated cycling and two months of storage. The sensing behavior is mainly associated with water-adsorption-mediated modulation of charge transport within the hydrated polymer/MXene interfacial network, while an additional low-frequency interfacial process emerges under high-humidity conditions. Beyond humidity sensing, the composite largely retains the vapor-transport capability of the porous PVA matrix and simultaneously provides effective photothermal conversion under light irradiation. A garment-mounted PET-ITO prototype further enables real-time wireless transmission of activity-associated humidity-responsive signals. These results show that L -lysine-assisted MXene integration in electrospun porous membranes provides a composition-tunable platform for humidity-responsive electrical readout and photothermal heating demonstrations.
