A high-safety composite solid-state electrolyte (CSSE) was constructed by embedding the high ionic conductivity garnet type Li 6.5 La 3 Zr 1.5 Ta 0.1 Nb 0.4 O 12 (LLZTNO) powder into a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) matrix. The ionic conductivity of the CSSE containing 10% LLZTNO could reach 1.05 × 10 −4 S cm −1 , and the electrochemical window was extended to 4.80 V vs Li/Li + . In addition, the evolution and composition of the SEI layer were characterized by in-situ optical microscopic observation, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM). When paired with an NCM811 cathode, the batteries showed good rate cycling performance, and the discharge capacity could be maintained at 137.1 and 91.2 mAh g −1 at 0.3C and 2C after 80 and 100 cycles. The needle penetration test further demonstrated superior safety and potential applications of the PVDF-based room-temperature CSSE batteries.

Highly reactive aluminum-fluorine composites with novel structures have attracted much attention in the past decades. However, there is not a specific mechanism to explain the combustion-supporting or inducing effect of F-polymer on aluminum powders . Herein, we present a systematic study of the induced reaction mechanism and propose a new elaboration. Two types of Nano-aluminum/Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (n-Al/PVDF) composites are fabricated via electrospray and mechanical mixing method, respectively. The electrospray sample excites a Pre-Ignition Reaction (PIR) between fluorine and the Al 2 O 3 shell at a low temperature, and simultaneously the specific surface area , surface element state and alumina shell structure of aluminum powders change to some extent. However, the surface structure of the physical mixture does not change significantly in the same temperature range. On this basis, we studied the relationship between the change of surface structure and the enhanced combustion performance of aluminum in electrospray sample. The results show that the combustion-supporting effect of PVDF on aluminum powder should be attributed to the corrosion of the alumina shell and the loose structure of the PIR product.

Poly(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl methacrylate)-b-poly(imidazoled glycidyl methacrylate-co-diethylene glycol methyl ether methacrylate) (PTFEMA-b-P(iGMA-co-MEO2MA)) containing an upper critical solution temperature (UCST) polymer chain was prepared and blended with poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) to produce a thermoresponsive membrane with smart self-cleaning performance. The successful preparation of the membrane was demonstrated by attenuated total reflection–Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy characterization. The membrane shows UCST performance, and its flux changes with the filtrate temperature as the UCST polymer chain stretches out and contracts in response to various temperatures. In addition, the UCST polymer chain can disrupt the foulant and push it away from the membrane when the temperature is above the UCST and thus enables membranes to exhibit a smart self-cleaning behavior. To the best of our knowledge, this work is the first report of a smart self-cleaning membrane based on the blending of a diblock copolymer containing a UCST polymer chain with PVDF.

A composite solid polymer electrolyte (CSPE) is the best candidate in all-solid-state lithium metal batteries because of its flexibility, high safety, wide electrochemical stability, relatively high ionic conductivity, and excellent compatibility with the lithium metal. In this work, the garnet-type Li6.75La3Zr1.75Ta0.25O12 (LLZTO) is introduced into a poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)/poly(vinylidene fluoride–hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF–HFP)-based CSPE (PEO/PVDF–HFP/LLZTO CSPE). The PEO/PVDF–HFP/LLZTO CSPE possesses a high lithium-ion transference number of 0.47, a high ionic conductivity of 2.65 × 10–4 S cm–1, a wide electrochemical window of 5.55 V vs Li+/Li, and effective inhibition of lithium dendrite growth for 1000 h with a current density of 0.10 mA cm–2. Furthermore, the Li//LiFePO4 cell assembled with the PEO/PVDF–HFP/LLZTO CSPE delivers superior rate capability and good cycling stability. Therefore, the PEO/PVDF–HFP/LLZTO CSPE is a very promising candidate for high-performance all-solid-state lithium metal batteries.

In this study, we designed and engineered a novel 3D network BT/MF/PVDF (barium titanate/melamine foam/polyvinylidene fluoride) composite film using hydrothermal process and casting technology. During the engineering process, titanium oxide (HTO) nanosheets were wound onto the surface of MF to form an HTO/MF nanocomposite material. Through hydrothermal treatment of HTO/MF, petal-like BT grew on the MF network, forming a 3D BT/MF composite material. Finally, PVDF was infiltrated into the 3D BT/MF network to fabricate the BT/MF/PVDF composite film. The engineered 3D BT/MF/PVDF composite films exhibit excellent dielectric properties with dielectric constant of 46.8 at 1 kHz, very low dielectric loss (tan δ = 0.0080), and breakdown strength increased to 196.6 MV·m −1 . In addition, the energy storage density and the charging and discharging efficiency of the composite films reach 3.685 J⋅cm −3 and 94.89%, respectively. The 3D network BT structure provides a continuous polarization path for the composite films, significantly increasing the dielectric constant and breakdown strength. The engineered composite films have a wide application prospect in the field of high-power energy storage and flexible electronic devices.

In order to reduce membrane fouling and fabricate highly selective membranes with high water permeability, three kinds of comb-shaped amphiphilic triblock copolymers , poly[poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate]- b -poly(methyl methacrylate)- b -poly[poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate] (PPEGMA- b -PMMA- b -PPEGMA, named as PEME), were synthesized via RAFT polymerization and used as modifiers to prepare poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) blend membranes by the non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) method. The effects of PEME with different hydrophilic PPEGMA length on the surface chemical structure, morphology, permeability and antifouling properties of the blend membranes were investigated detailedly. The results from ATR-FTIR and XPS tests confirmed that hydrophilic PPEGMA segments in PEME were enriched on the membrane surface due to PEME induced surface segregation. With the increase of the hydrophilic chain length in PEME, the mean pore size, porosity and roughness of the blend membrane increased gradually, indicating the modifier had the ability to adjust the membrane pore structure. Compared with pure membrane, the hydrophilicity of blend membranes was enhanced and the protein adsorption of representative bovine serum albumin (BSA) decreased obviously. After three cycles of the water-BSA-water, the M-2 blend membrane exhibited high BSA solution flux (150 L·m −2 ·h −1 ), excellent rejection (up to 99.99%) and satisfactory antifouling performance. In addition, compared with the recently published PVDF blend ultrafiltration membranes prepared by NIPS method, the M-2 membrane with surface small pore size, high flux, high selectivity and low fouling properties overcame the permeability-selectivity trade-off for BSA solution separation and showed a good application prospect for efficiently protein separation.

Developing gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) is a promising strategy to mitigate safety concerns caused by the leakage of liquid electrolytes in lithium metal batteries (LMBs). However, fabricating a membrane with high thermal stability, whose derived GPE also maintains good electrochemical performance, remains a major challenge. Herein, we report a composite membrane, poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP)/poly(m-phenylene isophthalamide) (PMIA), with excellent thermal stability and uniform nanoporous structure for high-performance GPE of LMBs. The PVDF-HFP/PMIA composite membrane, featuring a uniform pore size of 110 nm, is prepared by a double-sided solvent–nonsolvent exchange process via microfluidic technique. The incorporation of PMIA achieves the enhanced heat resistance of the composite membrane with a superior size retention of 86% after continuous heating at 250 °C for more than 360 min. The PVDF-HFP/PMIA GPEs-based Li||Li symmetric cells display stable voltage across various current densities and cycles for 600 h at 0.5 mA cm–2. Moreover, the morphology of the lithium anodes after 100 h shows uniform lithium deposition, demonstrating excellent suppression of lithium dendrite growth. The Li||LFP cells assembled with PVDF-HFP/PMIA-based GPEs deliver a high discharge capacity of 134.5 mAh g–1 at 5 C. The as-prepared heat-resistant GPEs membrane thus offers great potential for improving the safety performance of LMBs.

Hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane (CL-20) is a high-energy explosive widely used in composite explosives and propellants, but its application is severely limited by thermally induced ε-to-γ polymorphic transition and high solubility in nitrate ester solvents. The transition reduces energy density and increasing sensitivity, and the solubility causes dissolution-recrystallization defects (e.g., voids, compositional inhomogeneities) during long-term storage. To address these issues while preserving its high energetic performance, this study developed a polydopamine@polyvinylidene fluoride (PDA@PVDF) dual-coating strategy, fabricating CL-20 composite particles with a core-shell structure. In-situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) results confirmed that the ε-to-γ phase transition temperature of CL-20 increased from 110 °C (pristine CL-20) to 140 °C. Meanwhile, the CL-20@PDA@9%PVDF sample exhibited the lowest solubility and the best solvent resistance, and the solubility of CL-20 in nitrate ester solvents was drastically reduced from 0.229 g/100 g to 0.026 g/100 g, an 88.6% decrease, effectively enhancing its structural and solvent resistance stability. For energetic performance, when mixed with aluminum powder at a 7:3 mass ratio, the CL-20@PDA@9%PVDF/Al composite achieved a combustion heat of 8275 J/g, 8.7% higher than that of the unmodified Al/CL-20 system (7611 J/g). Combustion pressure tests showed that although the modified system exhibited slightly lower initial peak pressure and pressure rise rate due to dilute CL-20 content from inert coatings, it presented a unique "delayed enhancement" effect, with pressure gradually surpassing and ultimately exceeding that of the unmodified system in the middle and late combustion stages, enabling more sustained high-pressure output. This work realizes the synergistic optimization of CL-20’s polymorphic/solvent stability and energetic performance, providing a feasible and scalable approach for the practical application of CL-20 in advanced energetic systems.

In this study, graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) and nickel–cobalt (NiCo) alloy were adopted as reinforcing materials to prepare epoxy (EP) resin-based composites. NiCo particles were able to achieve uniform anchoring on GNPs’ surface under the electrostatic force due to the successful introduction of oxygen defects on GNPs. With the synergistic effect of adhesive PVDF and salt particles, the system with three-dimensionally (3D) interconnected network was successfully constructed. Benefit from the formation of mechanically stable and efficient heat conduction paths, the thermal conductivity (TC) of the EP/PVDF/NiCo@GNP composite reached 1.077 W⋅m −1 ⋅K −1 at a filler volume fraction of 6.82 vol%, while the counterpart’s storage modulus ( E’ ) was up to 3.22 GPa. In addition, a scaling formula was quantitatively proposed to correlate TC with E’ , and the perfect agreement between the theoretical prediction and experimental data clarified the underlying mechanism of the relationship between phonons transport and stress transfer within a system with 3D ordered structures. The establishment of relationship between AHR (average heating rate) and TC made it possible to further predict TC of composites based upon the infrared thermal imaging (ITI) data. The as-prepared GNP composites show good application prospects as thermal management materials which need to experience thermally mechanical deformation.

A thin-film composite polyamide membrane has been widely implemented in water desalination. However, the balance between permeability and selectivity by decreasing structural stability has restricted their larger-scale applications in water desalination. Here, we fabricated nanofiltration membranes (NFMs) by interfacial polymerization on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) substrates modified with hierarchical flower-like molybdenum disulfide (HF–MoS 2 ). The thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) NFMs exhibited a water flux up to 21.5 LMH/bar and rejection rates of 98.6% for Na 2 SO 4 . Steric hindrance and Donnan exclusion together contributed to high salt rejection rates, as evidenced by a less polyamide layer thickness such as 56 nm and a high surface negative charge at pH 3–10. Note that the nanocomposite substrate became more porous, more hydrophilic, and rougher than the non-nanocomposite one, due to an increase in the fraction of macroporous on the surface, which was known to affect the performance of the polyamide layer. The high content of HF-MoS 2 incorporated in PVDF substrate led to enhanced hydrophilicity and, consequently, a cross-linking degree of defect-free polyamide, resulting in declines in thickness and increases in water permeability and salt rejection. Furthermore, TFN NFMs exhibited an excellent organic solvent resistance and long-term stability, indicating that HF-MoS 2 incorporation had no adverse effect but even improved their structural stability. Compared to NFMs without MoS 2 modification, NFMs with MoS 2 modification showed a better performance for desalination of real seawater and excellent anti-biofouling properties for lysozyme and bovine serum albumin. Taking together, the TFN NFMs provide high permeability and rejection rate without a decline in structural stability. Therefore, TFN NFMs were promising candidates for practical water desalination treatment.

Polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) microfiltration membranes hold significant potential for oily wastewater treatment due to their exceptional mechanical and chemical stability. However, PVDF's inherent hydrophobicity leads to severe fouling, limiting its use in heavily contaminated waters, and particularly hindering continuous operation in pollutant-rich environments. Thus, modifying PVDF to establish robust hydrophilicity is urgently needed for sustainable, multifaceted antifouling purposes. Inspired by organic–inorganic bridges, we developed a phase-controlled strategy to fabricate an Al 3+ -crosslinked ionic polymer-PVDF membrane. This was achieved by integrating favorable bridging structures into the PVDF matrix. Specifically, 2-Acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS) and diethanolamine (DEA), polymerized in situ in the casting solution, undergo Al 3+ -OH and Al 3+ -SO 3 − coordination-driven crosslinking during the phase separation process. This process enabled simultaneous Al 3+ -polymer coordination, resulting in a stable organic–inorganic bridging network in the porous membrane. PVDF/P(AMPS-DEA)@Al 3+ exhibited superhydrophilicity (0° water contact angle in 20 s) and high pure water flux (2600 L·m −2 ·h −1 under 0.1 bar) at room temperature (25 °C). Additionally, the membranes demonstrated robust and sustained performance in separating oily wastewater (with mineral oil used as model foulant) (864 L·m −2 ·h −1 high flux and > 98.5 % oil rejection rate after three oil-water separation cycles). Lastly, PVDF/P(AMPS-DEA)@Al 3+ exhibited remarkable resistance to multiple types of biofouling, including bovine serum albumin (BSA) protein, B. Subtilis and E. Coli bacteria, and diatoms. This work introduces a novel organic–inorganic bridging strategy for PVDF modification, offering a robust approach toward scalable.

High dielectric constant and high breakdown strength of nanodielectrics are difficult to achieve simultaneously, which is a challenge that must be faced in the current research, and a single-scale control strategy is difficult to solve the current problem. This study introduced hexafluorobutyl methacrylate (HFBMA) as a crosslinking modifier to prepare HFBMA/PVDF composite films by UV in situ crosslinking strategy. Through the study of multiscale control strategy, it was found that the FTIR results support the occurrence of UV-induced crosslinking, which is likely associated with the formation of a crosslinked network that restricts polymer-chain motion under high electric fields, inhibits the migration of molecular segments, significantly reduces the free-volume defects, and significantly increases the breakdown strength to 587.88 MV/m, which is 150% of PVDF (391.33 MV/m). The fluorinated side groups in HFBMA may contribute to deeper trapping states and charge-blocking effects because of their strong electronegativity, which is consistent with suppressed carrier migration and reduced space-charge injection, cutting conductivity loss and lowering the leakage current to 5.46 × 10 −7 A/cm 2 —one order of magnitude below that of pure PVDF. As a result, the energy storage density reaches 7.46 J/cm 3 , nearly double the value of PVDF. Graphical abstract
