Eco-friendly adsorbents for removing heavy metals from wastewater are urgently needed. This work fabricated an amidoxime-modified polypropylene (PP) fiber as a cost-effective and recyclable adsorbent to remove heavy metals. The laboratory study aimed to evaluate the competitive adsorption of Cu(II), Pb(II) and Zn(II) onto AO-PP fiber in aqueous solutions. The adsorption isothermal data fitted the Langmuir isotherm well, and the maximum adsorption capacities (mg/g) were in the order of Cu (47.23)>Pb (45.64)>Zn (37.78) when applying the Langmuir isotherm at pH 5.0. Adsorption equilibrium could be reached within 90 min. The adsorption was pH-dependent and followed the pseudo-second-order model well. The adsorption can be explained by the coordination between N- and O-containing groups and the metallic ions. Metallic ion affinity, steric hindrance , and covalent index were the main factors affecting the competitive adsorption behavior. Regeneration experiments revealed that the obtained adsorbent maintained favorable adsorption capacity even after 20 cycles. Cement mortars incorporating the metal-adsorbed fiber exhibited improved mechanical properties and satisfactory leaching performance. This work experimentally validated the effective use of AO-PP fiber to capture heavy metals from wastewater as well as subsequent sequestration of the recycled fibers in a suitable material matrix , providing a new reference for heavy metal harvesting and final disposal.

A novel multiple active sites cellulose-based adsorbent (MCC/TEPAA-BCTTC) with a high density of multiple active adsorption sites (N, O, S) was prepared by using epichlorohydrin cross-linking microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) with tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA), followed by grafting with bis(carboxymethyl) trithiocarbonate (BCTTC). It was shown that the removal rates of MCC/TEPAA-BCTTC for Pb(II) (1 mg/L), Cu(II) (3 mg/L) and Cr(VI) (1 mg/L) reached 100 %, 98 % and 99 %, respectively, and the remaining concentration after adsorption reached the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) standards for Pb(II) and Cu(II) and the China integrated wastewater discharge standard for Cr(VI). These results indicate that the high removal rate of MCC/TEPAA-BCTTC for removing anionic and cationic heavy metal ions in low-concentration mixed heavy metal ions environments was mainly due to the high density of multiple adsorption sites that act via multiple cooperative mechanisms.

The removal of heavy metal ions and medical antibiotics from wastewater is crucial for environmental protection and human health. However, the adsorption capacities and reusability of previously reported adsorbent materials have been insufficient for efficient and sustainable wastewater treatment . In this study, we present a composite material, UiO-66-AMP@PAN, synthesized from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and polyacrylonitrile (PAN), which exhibits superior adsorption properties and reusability. The material demonstrates excellent adsorption capacities for heavy metal ions Pb(II) and Cr(VI) as well as the antibiotic tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH), among which the maximum adsorption capacities for Pb(II)(pH=7) and Cr(VI)(pH=5) and antibiotic tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) (pH=9) were 455.8 mg/g, 442.08 mg/g and 405.92 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption efficiency of UiO-66-AMP@PAN as an adsorbent for adsorbing Pb(II)(pH=7) and Cr(VI)(pH=5) and the antibiotic tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) (pH=9) remained above 90% even after ten consecutive cycles. The performance of UiO-66-AMP@PAN as an adsorbent has remained unchanged across multiple adsorption-desorption cycles, demonstrating its potential for long-term use in wastewater treatment applications. This innovative approach paves the way for the development of more efficient and environmentally friendly adsorption materials to address the challenges posed by heavy metal ions in wastewater and medical antibiotics.

To resolve the short-term inflammatory storm after the operation and the long-term osteointegration deficiency of titanium (Ti) implant as an artificial hip joint, in this work, a novel functionalized Ti implant with an “on-demand” treatment strategy was explored. The metallopolyphenol network (Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and Strontium) wrapped Prussian blue nanoparticles were prepared and anchored on the Ti surface. During the acute inflammatory phase, the inflammatory acidic microenvironment will result in the degradation of the metallopolyphenol network and the responsive release of EGCG and strontium (Sr) ions. The released EGCG could reduce oxidative stress damage and promote the transition of macrophages from M1 to M2. In comparison, Sr ions could stimulate osteoblast differentiation and achieve the rapid osteogenesis and fixation of implants. To achieve long-term osteointegration efficacy, “on-demand” near-infrared light irradiation for the remained PB particles could be adopted if necessary. The mild photothermal conversion temperature could upregulate the expressions of heat shock proteins around the implant and promote the biosynthesis of type I collagen, as well as the formation of bone matrix. In vitro and in vivo results proved the feasibility of our strategy. It is a prospective method for the modification of Ti implants.

Heavy metal pollution in water, particularly Pb ion pollution, has seriously threatened human life and health. Therefore, the manufacture of efficient and sensitive heavy metal ion detection materials is essential. The objective of this study was to improve the electrochemical detection performance of laser-induced graphene (LIG) for Pb(II). Considering the excellent ion affinity and high activity of transition metals, Ni-Fe alloy coatings were prepared on the surface of LIG through jet electrodeposition. The prepared LIG and Ni-Fe/LIG were qualitatively analyzed through Raman spectrometry, X-ray diffraction analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The surface micromorphologies, charge transfer capabilities, and electrochemically active surface areas of LIG and Ni-Fe/LIG were characterized. The detection range and limit of detection (LOD) of Pb(II) for LIG and Ni-Fe /LIG as electrochemical sensors were analyzed. Results showed that compared with LIG, Ni-Fe/LIG had more surface active sites, a higher charge transfer capability, and a larger electrochemically active surface area that reached 0.828 cm2. Ni-Fe/LIG had a detection range of 20–1200 µg/L and an LOD of as low as 0.771 µg/L. Ni-Fe/LIG demonstrated a better electrochemical detection performance for Pb(II) than LIG when used as an electrochemical sensor. Keywords:Pb(II) detection;Ni-Fe/LIG;jet electrodeposition;electrochemical sensor

ZIF-8, a metal-organic framework, has large sorption capacities for a series of heavy metals. However, it is difficult to be separated from aqueous solution, limiting its practical application in wastewater treatment . Herein, ZIF-8 was in-situ grown on the polyethyleneimine-functionalized alginate to construct the ZIF-8 @ALG-PEI aerogels with a three-dimensional network structure. This synthesis strategy not only overcomes the above-mentioned defects of ZIF-8, but also provides more functional groups, pores, and channels. The synthesized ZIF-8 @ALG-PEI aerogels exhibit outstanding removal performance towards Pb(II) and Cd(II) with maximum sorption capacity values of 295.986 and 249.838 mg·g −1 , respectively. The sorption of Pb(II) and Cd(II) on ZIF-8 @ALG-PEI is strongly affected by pH, but little influenced by ionic strength. In the multi-component sorption systems, ZIF-8 @ALG-PEI shows better sorption affinity and selectivity for Pb(II) than for Cd(II). The three-dimensional network structure constructed by alginate makes Pb(II) and Cd(II) easier to contact with the surfaces of ZIF-8 @ALG-PEI. The strong surface complexation of the O- and N-containing functional groups provided by ZIF-8 and PEI with Pb(II) and Cd(II) makes the largest contribution to the removal of Pb(II) and Cd(II) by ZIF-8 @ALG-PEI. In summary, the experimental findings of this work prove that the synthesized ZIF-8 @ALG-PEI aerogels have promising applications in practical wastewater treatment .

All-inorganic halide perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs) have attracted extensive attention due to their potential for the next-generation displays. The ammonium and halide composition affect strongly the photoelectrical properties and the long-term stability of PNCs. In this work, we present a novel class of mixed all-inorganic (Cs,NH 4 )Pb(Br,X) 3 (X = Cl, Br, I) NCs prepared via cation/anion co-exchange reaction between CsPbBr 3 NCs and the mechanochemically reacted NH 4 Pb n X 2n+1 (X = Cl, Br, I, n = 1 or 2) powders. The cubic morphologies of (Cs,NH 4 )Pb(Br,X) 3 NCs with different halogen element combinations were successfully obtained. In the meanwhile, the extended emission ranges from deep-blue (453 nm) to warm-yellow (564 nm). Higher PLQY and higher stability against ambient air and UV light were achieved simultaneously by controlling the ion co-exchanging process. The photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of (Cs,NH 4 )Pb(Br,X) 3 (X = Cl, Br, I) NCs were also significantly enhanced compared with that of pure CsPbBr 3 after ions exchanging (>85% versus 58%). In addition, the stability of (Cs,NH 4 )Pb(Br,X) 3 (X = Cl, Br, I) NC thin films under the UV-irradiation and in the ambient atmosphere were also dramatically improved. The cation/anion co-exchanging synthetic strategy developed in our research provides a new pathway to modulate and realize mixed-ion PNCs with high optoelectronic performance.

Epichlorohydrin-modified chitosan-Schiff base composite (CS/24Cl/ECH) prepared via the one-pot reaction as characterized by Fourier transform Infra-Red spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Scanning electron microscope (SEM). Its removal ability of Pb(II) ions from aqueous solution was investigated. The adsorption of Pb(II) ions carried out at different initial pH, dose of CS/24-Cl/ECH, contact time and co-existing ions. The maximum adsorption capacity of Pb(II) ions was 170 mg/g. Finally, based on the absorption results, the adsorption of Pb(II) ions was fitted by single-layer Langmuir isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order (PSO) kinetics model. The absorption mechanism of Pb(II) ions was controlled by chemical coordination Pb(II) ions with the active sites on the surface of CS/24Cl/ECH composite. Also, CS/24Cl/ECH showed excellent recyclable efficiency up to 5 cycle and potential sorbent for other heavy metal ions.

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) is widely used as a hole transport layer (HTL) in inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs) because of its excellent hole transport capability and simple preparation process. According to theoretical studies, a thinner PEDOT:PSS HTL allows more incident light to enter the perovskite layer. However, the PEDOT:PSS HTL prepared by the traditional deposition process has some limitations, such as the thick HTL, abundant defects at the PEDOT:PSS/perovskite interface, etc. Is there a preparation process that can achieve the thinning and modification of the PEDOT:PSS HTL in one-step process at the same time? In this work, inspired by the semiconductor etching process, an eco-friendly solvent etching technique is applied during the spin-coating process to fabricate an ultrathin PEDOT:PSS HTL and simultaneously introduce a green passivator (polyethylene glycol, PEG) as the bridge molecule on the HTL upper surface. In this process, the green PEG aqueous etchant can etch the excess bulk PEDOT:PSS away to form an ultrathin PEDOT:PSS HTL with PEG molecules and rich PEDOT domains remained on its surface (PEG-PEDOT:PSS HTL). This well-designed HTL is successfully thinned to enhance its light transmission and can be better matched with the Sn–Pb perovskite layer. As a result, the power conversion efficiency of Sn–Pb PSCs using the PEG-PEDOT:PSS HTL is improved from 20.52% of the reference to 21.58%, and the stability of Sn–Pb PSCs is dramatically enhanced as well.

Due to high surface area and large pore volume, nanostructure zinc oxides/its composites have gained a lot of research interests for heavy metal removal from water. Low stability of the ZnO at low and high pH is however a problem. In this work, ZnO@MgO, ZnO and MgO are synthesized via co-precipitation, followed by calcinations. The samples show remarkable removal of Pb(II) from water when compared to commercial samples; the best results is obtained using ZnO@MgO which exhibit adsorption capacity of 250 mg g −1 equivalent to 100% removal capacity. The optimum removal capacity is retained in a wide range of pH (i.e. pH 6–9) at temperature 30 °C. Low adsorption capacity coupled with low stability in acidic condition; a problem associated with ZnO-based adsorbents when it is being used for the removal of heavy metals from water/wastewater; often prevents this system from being practically used; is overcome here. The ZnO@MgO adsorbent shows chemical stability over wide range of pH(2–9). The adsorption is chemisorptive in nature, endothermic and evidently aided by high surface heterogeneity (△H° ˜25 kJ mol-1 and △S°˜110.6 J mol −1 K −1 ). Appreciable adsorption capacity over wide range of pH-value, high recovery and reusability results from nanosphere morphology of the composite sample; all these novel properties are attributed to the strong electronic coupling effect between MgO and ZnO. This work is expected to spur further research on ZnO-based composite materials in allied areas, including (i) mitigation of atmospheric pollution and (ii) water treatment processes.

The efficient removal of heavy metals from aqueous environment is imperative and challenging. A novel ternary composite constructed of diaminopyridine polymers, graphene oxide, and ferrite magnetic nanoparticles was designed by a facile in situ polymerization strategy for the removal of Pb(II) from aqueous solution. Detailed characterization of morphological, chemical, and magnetic properties was employed systematically to confirm the formation of the composite material. Batch adsorption experiment studies suggested that the composite was an excellent adsorbent for Pb(II) which was easily collected after use via exposure to an external magnetic field for 30 s. The effects of different parameters such as solution pH, adsorbent dosage, contact time, initial Pb(II) concentration, temperature, and co-existing ions were examined. The maximum adsorption capacity at pH = 5 was estimated to be 387.2 mg g −1 at 298 K by the Langmuir isotherm model, accompanied by favorable adsorption recyclability according to the investigation of regeneration experiments. Thermodynamic studies revealed that the Pb(II) adsorption via our ternary composite was endothermic and spontaneous. The corresponding removal performance for effluent containing Pb(II) from the battery industry was successfully examined. The present results indicated that our designed adsorbent is beneficial to the practical Pb(II) removal in wastewater purification.

In this study, lignin extracted from rice husk was used to synthesis double network hydrogel adsorbent, named RH-CTS/PAM gel. RH-CTS/PAM gel exhibited macroporous structure and high buried water content, which gave rise to the exceptional adsorption performance. As results, in individual systems, the equilibrium time of Pb(II), Cu(II) and Cd(II) with initial concentration of 200 mg/L could be reached within 10 min, with the theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of 374.32, 196.68 and 268.98 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption rate and capacity of Pb(II), Cu(II) and Cd(II) in multicomponent systems were lower than that of individual systems. However, in a few cases of ternary system, higher adsorption rate and capacity was observed compare to binary systems. Adsorption mechanism indicated that both oxygen-containing and nitrogen-containing functional groups played a dominant role during the adsorption process, and mainly through chemical interaction along with a small amount of physical interaction.
