Pt nanoparticles on Ni-N-C support for oxygen reduction reaction with robust SO₂ tolerance

Manli Wang,Zhicheng Liu,Ming Hou,Xu Luo,Wenbin Yang,Hongjie Zhang,Xiaoming Song,Zhigang Shao

The irreversible degradation of platinum-based catalysts caused by strong sulfur dioxide (SO₂) adsorption poses a primary obstacle to the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), limiting the practical application of proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Herein, we design and synthesize an anti-SO 2 poisoning Pt-based catalyst comprising Pt nanoparticles anchored on a single-atom Ni-N-HCNs support. The obtained catalyst (Pt/Ni-N-HCNs) exhibits exceptional tolerance to SO₂ poisoning, demonstrating a minimal negative shift of only 47.7 mV in the half-wave potential after contamination, compared to the 79.4 mV shift observed for commercial Pt/C. More importantly, Pt/Ni-N-HCNs catalyst demonstrates significantly enhanced ORR performance, with a mass activity of 0.58 A mg Pt −1 and a specific activity of 1.57 mA cm −2 , representing 1.2-fold and 2.7-fold improvements over commercial Pt/C, respectively. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and XPS results reveal that the strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) induces the downshift of the d-band center of Pt, thereby weakening SO 2 adsorption and facilitating SO 2 removal. Furthermore, the Ni N site in Ni-N-HCNs support exhibits high activity for SO 2 oxidation, promoting the effective removal of SO 2 from adjacent Pt sites. Both effects synergistically enhance the resistance to SO 2 poisoning of the Pt/Ni-N-HCNs catalyst without sacrificing ORR performance. This work provides insights into the design of poison-resistant electrocatalysts and the development of energy conversion systems with high environmental applicability.

Effect of Sm doping on the properties and structures of PIN-PMN-PT piezoelectric ceramics

Chunyang Zhao,Dashi Fu,Jinfeng Xu,Yalin Qin,Yongcheng Zhang

Ternary piezoelectric ceramics Pb(In 1 ∕ 2 Nb 1 ∕ 2 )O 3 –Pb(Mg 1 ∕ 3 Nb 2 ∕ 3 )O 3 –PbTiO 3 (PIN–PMN–PT) exhibit excellent temperature stability and hold great potential for high-frequency and high-power applications. However, its piezoelectric performance is much lower than that of the famous binary Pb(Mg 1 ∕ 3 Nb 2 ∕ 3 )O 3 –PbTiO 3 (PMN–PT) system. In this work, high-performance 15PIN–50PMN–35PT piezoceramics with piezoelectric coefficient d 3 3 of 700 pC/N, electromechanical coupling coefficient k p of 66% and high Curie temperature T C of 1 9 9 ∘ C were fabricated. Effect of Samarium (Sm) doping content on the ferroelectric, dielectric, electromechanical and piezoelectric properties and structures of 15PIN–50PMN–35PT piezoelectric ceramics were investigated, and results reveal that increasing the amount of Sm doping leads to a significant decrease of d 3 3 , k p , T C and other properties. This phenomenon is different from the previously reported results in Sm-doped binary PMN–PT ceramics. The room temperature and variable temperature phase structure and room temperature microstructure were studied to explain this phenomenon.

Synergistic P/Co Modulation of Pt Electronic Structure for Efficient Hydrogen Evolution via Seawater Electrolysis

Yuxin Zhao,Jinlei Shi,Tianyu Xia,Shubing Li,Weijie Liu,Haizhong Guo

Although Co modulation can optimize the electronic structure of Pt for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), PtCo still suffers from chloride ion (Cl–) corrosion in seawater electrolysis, severely limiting its practical applications. This study successfully constructed P-doped PtCo nanoflowers (P-PtCo NFs) with excellent corrosion resistance and rapid water dissociation kinetics through the introduction of P for synergistic electronic regulation. To demonstrate, the P-PtCo NFs require only an 18.2 mV overpotential to achieve 10 mA cm–2 in alkaline seawater, which is significantly lower than those of PtCo NFs (43.2 mV) and commercial Pt/C (65.2 mV), and maintain stable operation for over 500 h in 1 M KOH. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory analyses reveal strong electron interaction between P atoms and PtCo, which downshifts the d-band center of Pt by 0.038 eV and optimizes the adsorption strength of active sites toward hydrogen intermediates. In situ Raman spectroscopy and CO stripping experiments further illustrate that P doping reconstructs the electronic distribution of Pt, effectively promoting water molecule dissociation. This work highlights the essential role of P in conferring both corrosion resistance and fast reaction kinetics, providing a design strategy for efficient and durable seawater electrolysis catalysts through multicomponent electronic synergism.

The effects of dual promoters on the encapsulated Pt@silicalite-1 catalyst for ethane dehydrogenation

Zhang Yakun,Li Ruilong,Yong Xiaojing,Guan Chong,Zhang Yi

The effects of different promoters (including Sn, In, Ga, and K) on the activity, ethylene selectivity, and stability of the encapsulated Pt@silicalite-1 for ethane dehydrogenation were investigated. The dual-promoter catalysts, KPtIn@S-1 and KPtSn@S-1, exhibited high ethane initial conversions, high ethylene selectivity at 550°C, and high stability, with almost no deactivation during 30 hours on stream and the deactivation constants as low as 0.0003 and 0.0002 hour−1, respectively. Combining the characterization and performance evaluation results, it could be deduced that the introduction of Sn and In promoters plays an important role in diluting Pt, resulting in the reduced average Pt particle size. Moreover, the Sn introduced in KPtSn@S-1 led to the formation of a Si–O–Sn interaction structure between Sn and S-1 zeolite framework, resulting in the anchoring effects of Sn (II) on Pt sites. In the KPtIn@S-1 sample, the strong interaction between Pt and In also played a role in anchoring Pt species, which greatly reduced the formation of carbon deposition and inhibited the production of graphitic carbon deposits.

Pt decorated core-shell ZnS:Cu doped epoxy composites: Achieving enhanced breakdown strength and defect visualization

Zhi-Hao Xing,Ming-Xiao Zhu,Jian-Yi Xue,Jia Cheng,Guang Li,Bing Xia,Chongzi Cao,Yanbing Ji,Rui Liu

Designed ZnS:Cu@SiO 2 –Pt particles for insulation enhancement and defect visualization. • Pt/SiO 2 deep traps suppress charge migration via band realignment. • 0.3 wt% loading yields 47.53 kV/mm breakdown strength (+17.56% vs EP). • Outperforms ZnS:Cu and ZnS:Cu@SiO 2 controls (+1.93% and +8.85%). • EL visualizes defects: 100 μm scratches, 300 μm high- ε ε defects, 480 μm bubbles. Epoxy resins (EP) are widely used for power electronic encapsulation and electrical insulation, yet insulation defects (bubbles/micropores) can trigger partial discharge (PD) and accelerate degradation. Developing new methods capable of precisely detecting micro-defects has become a key focus in failure prevention. Inspired by the luminescence of Mycena chlorophos, we proposed self-reporting EP composites to visualize micro-defects, in which biomimetic designed fillers based on strawberry-like structure particles (ZSP) were incorporated. ZnS:Cu with electroluminescence characteristics was adopted as core material, whose surface is coated with SiO 2 shell and decorated with Pt nanoparticles. ZSPs synthesized via wet-chemical routes exhibit green electroluminescence under localized electric fields, enabling real-time visualization of micrometer-scale defects. Incorporating ZSPs into EP yields self-diagnosing composites (SDCs) that combine enhanced dielectric strength with defect visualization effects. DFT calculations revealed that Pt/SiO 2 interface introduces deep trap states, which suppress the charge migration. As a result, the breakdown strength of SDCs increased by 17.57% compared to pristine EP. SDCs further demonstrate broad defect-detection capability for surface and internal defects, including high-dielectric-constant defects, scratches, and bubbles. Overall, this work establishes a material-level route that integrate condition monitoring with insulation reinforcement for high-voltage equipment and electronic modules.

Precisely constructing subsurface electron pump stabilizes Pt catalysts against oxygen-induced degradation in fuel cells

Hang Liu,Xiao Liu,Yuxin Gao,Yi Yu,Zhang Liu,Pengmin Wang,Bin Shan,Rong Chen

Conventional methods to mitigate surface active sites dissolution in Pt-based fuel cell catalysts (Pt/C) often lead to loss of electrochemically active surface areas or dealloying. Here, we report a strategy via atomic layer deposition to precisely introduce a nonmetallic single-atom electron pump into unstable Pt subsurface, regulating oxygen adsorption and inhibiting inward diffusion. Boron single atoms significantly enhance Pt dissolution resistance, resulting in an initial peak power density of 1.76 W cm −2 for Pt/C, only 16.8% mass activity loss after 30,000 cycles test (projected lifetime >30,000 h, exceeding DOE 2025 targets), and ultrahigh stability over 200 h rated operation with negligible current declines. In situ characterizations and DFT calculations reveal that subsurface-doped-boron-induced asymmetric strain weakens oxygen species adsorption, blocks oxygen penetration, and continually pumps electrons to surface unsaturated Pt sites to suppress oxidation dissolution. This work provides a generalizable and scalable approach for stabilizing Pt-based catalysts through atomic-level subsurface engineering.

Enhancing photocatalytic methane oxidation by coupling Pt-mediated charge transfer with hydrophobic triphase interface regulation

Peng Qiao,Xu Chang,Zhang Shengwei,Zhang Jinlong,Lei Juying,Ye Ziwei,Wang Lingzhi

The low solubility of methane in water and the resulting gas–liquid–solid mass-transfer limitation severely restrict the efficiency of photocatalytic selective methane oxidation. Herein, Pt-In 2 O 3 catalysts were constructed and further modified with triethoxy-n-octylsilane (OTES) to achieve the synergistic enhancement of charge transfer and triphase mass transport. Pt loading and OTES grafting preserved the bulk crystal phase of In 2 O 3 , while establishing a Pt/In 2 O 3 heterointerface and a hydrophobic surface layer. Pt mainly promoted photogenerated charge separation and interfacial electron transfer, whereas OTES had only a minor effect on the electronic process. Among the catalysts examined, the optimized catalyst showed the best performance, giving a total productivity of 4659.1 μmol g −1  h −1 , a liquid-phase productivity of 4116.7 μmol g −1  h −1 , and a liquid-product selectivity of 88.4%, with the liquid-phase productivity being 1.44 times that of the corresponding catalyst without OTES modification. The activity showed a volcano-type dependence on OTES dosage, indicating an optimal hydrophobic range. Trapping experiments, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and chemical-probe analyses identified ·OH and ·O 2 − /·OOH as the key reactive species involved in the reaction. This work demonstrates that tuning interfacial wettability is an effective strategy for enhancing photocatalytic methane oxidation in water.

Oxygen-vacancy-rich Ce-doped MnO2/MWCNTs supported Pt catalyst for efficient photoelectrocatalytic methanol oxidation

Wenjing Zhou,Fan Zhang,Liming Xu,Danqin Li,Jie Li,Jiashuo Lv,Yufei Hu,Meisi Yu,Furui Lin,Danhua Zhu,Jian Hou,Weiqiang Zhou

Ce-doped MnO 2 with oxygen vacancies modulates Pt electronic structure. • Pt/Ce-MnO 2 /MWCNTs shows 9.69 A mg Pt -1 for methanol oxidation under light. • Electron-rich Pt surface shows weakened CO adsorption at 0.94 V vs. RHE. • Synergy of defect engineering and photocatalysis boosts MOR durability. The development of efficient and CO-tolerant anode catalysts is critical for advancing direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). Herein, we report a rationally designed photoelectrocatalyst comprising ultrafine Pt nanoparticles anchored on Ce-doped MnO 2 supported by highly conductive multi-walled carbon nanotubes (Pt/Ce-MnO 2 /MWCNTs). Ce incorporation induces abundant oxygen vacancies within the amorphous MnO 2 matrix, which modulate the local electronic structure and facilitate strong metal-support interactions. This results in electron-enriched Pt surfaces with weakened CO adsorption, as evidenced by negative shifts in Pt 4f binding energies and improved CO stripping performance. Under simulated solar illumination, the Pt/Ce-MnO 2 /MWCNTs catalyst delivers a mass activity of 9.69 A mg Pt -1 toward methanol oxidation, representing a 46.6% enhancement over that under dark conditions and exceeding undoped Pt/MnO 2 /MWCNTs and commercial Pt/C catalysts. This performance is attributed to the synergistic interplay of (i) oxygen-vacancy-mediated electronic modulation, (ii) efficient charge transport via the MWCNT network, and (iii) photoexcited charge carriers from Ce-MnO 2 that actively participate in oxidizing poisoning intermediates. The catalyst also exhibits CO tolerance with an onset potential of 0.94 V and good long-term durability, retaining 82.3% of its initial activity after 500 cycles. This work demonstrates strategies for designing high-performance DMFC anodes through defect engineering and light harvesting. Anchoring of Pt sub-nanocluster on rich-defect NiMoOH for efficient seawater electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Haonan Wu,Shengyao Su,Ningning Zhan,Jidong Cong,Yangshang Zhu,Pengfei Tian,Shiwei Song,Jingquan Liu

It remains challenging for constructing the electrocatalysts that can prevent agglomeration, clogging and resist corrosion to improve the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance of alkaline seawater. This study proposes a defect-assisted impregnation strategy to developed the Pt-NiMoOH/NMF with Pt sub-nanocluster distribution induced by a NiMoOH nanoarray on NiMo foam, resulting in an admired HER catalytic activity in alkaline seawater. The rich-defect NiMoOH nanosheet array strengthen the interaction with the Pt nanoclusters, not only effectively inhibiting the agglomeration of Pt, but also inducing the electron enrichment on the Pt surface by regulating electron local electronic environment. It is conducive to accelerating the water dissociation efficiency, enhancing the adsorption of protons and preventing the Ca/Mg clogging for active sites, and lead to remarkable improvements for HER performance. As a result, the Pt-NiMoOH/NMF electrocatalyst possessed a superior acid-like kinetics in 1 M KOH with a low Tafel slopes (38.6 mV dec −1 ) and overpotentials (66 mV at 500 mA cm −2 ). Significantly, it required an overpotential of 74 mV at 500 mA cm −2 and operated for 300 h continuously and stably in alkaline seawater condition. This work presents a novel strategy for enhancing catalytic performance in seawater by adjusting the interfacial interaction between metals and support.

Synergistic Catalysis of Atomically Dispersed CoOx Species and Pt Nanoclusters for Efficient Hydrogen Isotope Oxidation

Guilin Wei,Zhaoyang Wang,Xianglin Wang,Bin Yu,Linsen Zhou,Junhong Luo,Xirui Lu,Jiangfeng Song,Yan Shi,Ning Liu,Feize Li,Xingwen Feng

Catalytic oxidation is commonly employed in industry to reduce the concentration of tritium-containing radioactive gases leaked into the atmosphere, thereby protecting human health and the environment. Currently, Pt-based catalysts are considered promising candidates for the oxidative removal of tritiated gases. However, previously reported catalysts exhibit high activation barriers (≈1.0 eV) for the rate-determining step, which limits their overall efficiency. In this study, synergistic catalytic sites composed of Pt nanoclusters and atomically dispersed CoO x species are strategically constructed within silicalite-1 zeolite, enabling efficient catalytic oxidation of hydrogen isotopes under low-temperature and high space velocity conditions. This improvement is primarily attributed to the dual functionality of the CoO x unit, which not only serves as an oxygen donor but also modulates the electronic structure of adjacent Pt atoms. These effects facilitate both reaction pathways, lowering the energy barriers of their respective rate-determining steps to 0.63 and 0.92 eV, both well below 1.0 eV. The synthesized CoO x /Pt@S-1 catalyst achieves >99% conversion of H 2 and D 2 at 40 °C under a GHSV of 48,000 mL g −1 h −1 . Moreover, it demonstrates excellent stability over a 37 d intermittent restart test.

Novel Pt-RuO2/TiO2 nanorod catalyst with enhanced activity and durability for oxygen reduction reaction

Bing Xu,Xin Wu,Qi Lv,Qinyi Yang,Jiaxi Pang,Jian Zhang,Lu Lu,Yu Shen

A novel Pt-RuO 2 /TiO 2 nanorod (Pt-RuO 2 /TNR) composite catalysts are prepared via the polyol method, in which the RuO 2 -TNR supports are synthesized by coprecipitation technology. Morphology characterization results demonstrate that RuO 2 nanoparticles (NPs) load on TNR carrier, and then Pt NPs uniformly disperse on the surface of RuO 2 -TNR with an average particle size of about 3.5 nm. The peak shifts of XPS patterns for Pt and Ti elements indicate the strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) between Pt NPs and RuO 2 -TNR. Compared with Pt/C catalyst, Pt-RuO 2 /TNR exhibits enhanced oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity and stability by the use of electrochemical testing techniques. ΔE 1/2 (about 30 mV) towards more positive potential represents the superior ORR performance of Pt-RuO 2 /TNR relative to Pt/C. Furthermore, the electrochemically active surface area (ECSA) of Pt-RuO 2 /TNR decreases only by 28 %, while the one of Pt/C is 53.8 % before and after accelerated degradation tests (ADT) for 20,000 cycles; and the loss on mass activity (MA) of the former (23 %) is much less than the one of the latter (52 %). Moreover, ECSA of Pt-RuO 2 /TNR decays only 5.8 %, whereas a considerable decline of ECSA for Pt/C is 41.5 % before and after corrosion testing for 50 h. Pt-RuO 2 /TNR could be used as an effective carbon-free electrocatalyst to improve the performance and stability of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs).

Quantitative Intracellular Delivery of Anticancer Nanodrugs Via an Immunoassay Employing Pt-SiO2 Janus-Peroxidase Nanozyme

Qiuning Zhang,Lei Li,Qianqian Yang,Wei Chen,Ziyuan Wang,Mingcui Zhang

The accurate and efficient quantification of nanodrug dosage is crucial for early anticancer therapy. The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) has emerged as a robust tool for detecting anticancer nanodrug dosage; however, the development of sensing elements to quantify anticancer nanodrugs still poses a challenge. To overcome this problem, we utilize polysuccinimide-loaded curcumin (CUR @PSIOAm) as a model to employ an ELISA based on peroxidase nanozyme Pt-SiO2 Janus nanoparticles (Pt-SiO2 JNPs) for the indirect quantitative analysis of intracellular anticancer nanodrug dosage. This novel approach employs an immunoassay to indirectly quantify the dosage of anticancer nanodrugs while preserving its structural integrity. The silica components of Pt-SiO2 JNPs adsorb intermediates, while the Pt NP components exhibit high catalytic activity. Pt-SiO2 JNPs are functionalized with anti-PSIOAm antibody (Pt-SiO2 JNPs-Ab) to serve as an immunosensor capable of specific recognition of CUR @PSIOAm. Additionally, we employed cytotoxicity assays and confocal imaging techniques to demonstrate the excellent biocompatibility of CUR @PSIOAm, as well as its specific uptake by cancer cells. According to the experimental results, the limit of detection (LOD) for the immunoassay of Pt-SiO2 JNPs as a marker for detecting CUR @PSIOAm is approximately 4.5-fold lower than that of horseradish peroxidase. Therefore, by optimizing the conditions, we established a direct competitive ELISA using Pt-SiO2 JNPs as colorimetric indicators for the quantitative detection of intracellular CUR @PSIOAm. The LOD for this ELISA was determined to be 0.01 ng/mL, while the loaded CUR amount calculated from the drug loading capacity was found to be 0.22 pg/mL. Furthermore, the recoveries obtained from this established ELISA ranged between 94.0 and 108%, demonstrating excellent accuracy. Consequently, the peroxidase mimic Pt-SiO2 JNPs-based ELISA exhibits significant potential for precise quantification of intracellular anticancer nanodrug dosages.
