S-CeNiFe LDHs decorated with sacrificial NiS2: A robust electrocatalyst for alkaline seawater splitting

Jiahui Fan,Fengxiang Liang,Qingshuo Liu,Zongyuan Cao,Zhuo Zhang,Bin Chen,Peng Zhang

S-CeNiFe LDH/NiS 2 enhances the durability of seawater splitting. • Sacrificial NiS 2 nanoparticles protect catalyst from Cl- corrosion. • Sulphuration and Ce atoms mitigate the loss of Ni/Fe during seawater splitting. • Downshifted d-band optimizes the OER and suppresses ClER. The development of efficient and stable electrocatalysts to overcome chloride corrosion is crucial for sustainable hydrogen production via alkaline seawater electrolysis. Herein, a Ce-doped NiFe LDH heterostructure (S-CeNiFe LDH/NiS 2 ) was synthesized and exhibited enhanced bifunctional activity for both the oxygen and hydrogen evolution reactions (OER/HER) in alkaline seawater (1 M KOH + natural seawater), along with seawater corrosion resistance by the sacrificial NiS 2 nanoparticles. The optimized S-Ce 0.4 NiFe LDH/NiS 2 requires low overpotentials of only 310 mV for OER and 290 mV for HER at 100 mA cm -2 , surpassing both unsulfurated CeNiFe LDH and bare NiFe LDH. It also shows smaller Tafel slopes and maintains excellent stability over 100 h with minimal decay. The sacrificial role of NiS 2 in protecting LDHs is confirmed by its structural and chemical evolution alongside attenuated seawater decomposition. Performance enhancement stems from heterostructure synergy: expanded surface area, accelerated charge transfer, Ce doping-induced electronic modulation, and conductive NiS 2 for HER. This work addresses critical challenges in direct seawater splitting for scalable hydrogen production. Download: Download high-res image (264KB) Download: Download full-size image

N,S-codoped TiO2 microspheres with obviously enhanced electrochemical performance for sodium-ion batteries

Hui Zhuang,Zixing Guan,Bimin Lin,Wenxi Huang,Yuanfu Deng

Heteroatom doping enhances the electrochemical properties of battery electrodes, but conventional multi-step syntheses limit practical applications. Herein, we report a single-step pyrolysis strategy for simultaneous nitrogen–sulfur codoping of anatase TiO 2 microspheres (NS-TiO 2 ) using thiourea as a dual-functional precursor. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveals a synergistic dual-site doping mechanism: sulfur substitutes at Ti sites (2.33 surface at.%) while nitrogen occupies interstitial positions (1.48 surface at.%). This architecture, alongside codoping-induced Ti 3+ defect states (∼3.77%) and oxygen vacancies, inherently enhances electronic conductivity and facilitates Na + transport. Consequently, the charge-transfer resistance decreases dramatically from 156.5 Ω in undoped TiO 2 to 49.48 Ω in the codoped material, which promotes predominant pseudocapacitive charge storage (84% at 2 mV·s −1 ). This optimized configuration delivers exceptional rate capability (55.1 mAh·g −1 at 5 A·g −1 ) and outstanding long-term cyclability (95.9% capacity retention over 2000 cycles at 1 A·g −1 ), significantly outperforming single-element doped analogues. Ultimately, this work establishes clear design principles for multi-element doped metal oxides, uniting synthetic simplicity with superior electrochemical functionality.

Nitrogen-rich porous poly(ionic liquid)s for efficient CO2 conversion under mild conditions

Youwei Wu,Ning Zhou,Tingyan Peng,Weixin Ma,Lili Qiu,Fei Xue,Zhifeng Dai,Yubing Xiong

Poly(ionic liquids) (PILs) offer many inherent advantages in material design, owing to their tunable structure, polarity, and versatile functionalization capability. These properties make PILs highly promising candidates for heterogeneous catalysis, especially carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) conversion and utilization. In this work, a triazine-functionalized isocyanate monomer and an amino-functionalized imidazolium-based PIL were designed and synthesized. Through the addition polymerization, a family of novel urea- and triazine-functionalized porous PIL heterogeneous catalysts (denoted as p-PIL-x) were prepared. The resulting materials were thoroughly characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and CO 2 adsorption measurements. The catalysis evaluation revealed that p-PIL-x promotes efficient CO 2 conversion via intramolecular synergy among the urea, triazine, and imidazole motifs, all of which are rich in nitrogen species. Under optimized conditions (0.1 MPa, 80 °C, 24 h), the catalyst achieved a cyclic carbonate yield of 94.33% with 99% selectivity. The reaction mechanism was further elucidated through density functional theory (DFT) calculations and in situ FT-IR measurement, which highlighted the cooperative role of hydrogen-bond donors and bromide ions in activating both the epoxide substrate and CO 2 . The synthesized p-PIL-x catalyst exhibits excellent heterogeneity, stability, and recyclability, offering a promising platform for the development of multifunctional heterogeneous catalysts toward efficient and sustainable CO 2 conversion.

Interfacial GO charge-bridge engineering reconstructs S-scheme charge flux for photocatalytic H2 evolution

Senhao Li,Xiaobo Han,Qingchun Wang,Fei Ruan,Xi Zhang,Jinxiao Bao,Yuwei Ma

GO kinetically reconstructs intrinsic S-scheme charge flux without altering its thermodynamic direction. • The GO bridge accelerates directional interfacial charge migration. • Continuous charge redistribution regulates Cd-site H* adsorption energetics. Interfacial charge regulation is crucial for improving S-scheme photocatalysts, yet the kinetic role of carbonaceous interfacial bridges remains insufficiently understood. Herein, graphene oxide (GO) is introduced into a directly contacted g-C 3 N 4 /CdS S-scheme heterojunction to reconstruct its interfacial charge-transport network. The direct g-C 3 N 4 /CdS heterointerface determines the S-scheme charge-transfer direction through Fermi-level equilibration, band bending, and the resulting built-in electric field, whereas interfacially distributed GO primarily functions as an auxiliary charge bridge that strengthens electronic coupling and lowers the kinetic resistance of selective low-energy carrier recombination. In situ irradiated X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance, combined with work-function analysis, reveal directional photoinduced charge redistribution consistent with a GO-assisted S-scheme pathway. Photoluminescence, transient photocurrent, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy further demonstrate suppressed charge recombination and improved interfacial carrier transport. Density functional theory calculations show that GO extends interfacial charge redistribution and shifts the calculated H* adsorption free energy at the Cd site closer to thermoneutrality relative to binary g-C 3 N 4 /CdS, yielding a ΔG H⁎ value of −0.29 eV. Consequently, g-C 3 N 4 /3GO/40CdS achieves a visible-light-driven H 2 evolution rate of 816.2 μmol g −1  h −1 , approximately 2.4 times that of binary g-C 3 N 4 /40CdS. Improving the adsorption kinetics of Li1.6Mn1.6O4-type adsorbents via synergistic Na and S doping

Zhangfa Yu,Panmin Yang,Chunxi Hai,Xuequn Li,Hongbo Sun,Yuan Zhou,Longgang Li,Xudong Yu,Wanghai He,Ying Zeng

Li 1.6 Mn 1.6 O 4 -type adsorbents show significant promise for lithium resource extraction from complex saline lakes due to their exceptional selectivity and high theoretical adsorption capacity of 72.3 mg g −1 . However, their practical application is markedly constrained by rapid manganese dissolution during elution with dilute HCl, primarily attributed to Jahn-Teller effect-induced Mn O structural distortion. To address this limitation, a synergistic S 2− /Na + co-doping strategy was employed: Na + stabilizes the spinel structure via Na O bond formation, while S 2− doping enhances charge density. In situ XRD analysis elucidated the structural evolution of the doped material. Experimental results demonstrate that H 1.6 Mn 1.6 O 4 modified with 1 % Na 2 S achieves an adsorption capacity of 39.6 mg g −1 in 300 ppm LiOH solution, with manganese dissolution loss below 2 %, and attains a single-pass lithium extraction efficiency of 99.5 % from oilfield brine containing 100 ppm Li + . Furthermore, the influence of Na + concentration on Li + adsorption selectivity was investigated for the first time, and the underlying mechanism was summarized. This finding is highly significant for efficient lithium extraction from various brines.

Constructing the fluorine-containing structures for excellent tribological properties of degradable Poly(hexahydrotriazine)s

Chunying Min,Yaxiang Su,Hang Yu,Hongyu Liang,Amna Siddique,Zhiwei Xu

Nowadays, degradable thermosets are confronted with a contradiction between their low performance and practical applications. In light of the weak covalent bonding of reversible bonds in biodegradable thermosetting resins, limits their applications in the field of tribology. Herein, we synthesize degradable poly(hexahydrotriazine)s (PHTs) by introducing trifluoromethyl (-CF 3 ) groups at different positions of the aromatic diamine main chains, achieving simultaneous improvement of degradability and high friction performance. The results showed that the fluorinated PHTs exhibited higher glass transition temperature (173.8 °C), tensile strength (61.8 MPa), and faster degradation rate (3 h) as compared to non-fluorinated polymer. Notably, fluorinated PHT resins exhibited excellent anti-wear performance with wear rates decreasing by 78.6 % owing to the large steric hindrance effect and strong electronegativity brought about by –CF 3 , which increases the rigidity and heat resistance of the PHTs molecules, thereby enabling it to effectively resist frictional heat generated during the friction process. Fluorinated PHTs revealed excellent wear resistance and degradation properties, which facilitates their practical application of energy conservation and protective metal anti-wear coatings in the tribological industry.

Enhancing Synergistic Interactions Among Metal Atoms Through S Doping for Efficient Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Jiang Shengjie,Wang Qi,Sun Gonggang,Li Xinbao

Developing highly active and stable non-precious-metal electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is essential for efficient green hydrogen production. However, monometallic catalysts exhibit poor stability and high overpotentials under high current densities. Therefore, the development of multi-metallic catalysts has become a focus of attention. Herein, we report a NiCoFeS/NF catalyst that exhibits higher OER activity in alkaline solution compare with commercial RuO 2 -based catalysts. The synthesized NiCoFeS/NF catalyst delivers a current density of 100 mA cm − 2 at a low overpotential of 280 mV and exhibits a Tafel slope of 49 mV dec − 1 , reflecting its favorable kinetics. Furthermore, the NiCoFeS/NF catalyst exhibited a long-term stability over 120 h, ensuring its potential for practical applications. Detailed characterizations revealed that sulfur incorporation not only creates additional active sites but also induces the self-unfolding of nanoparticles into nanosheets, thereby enlarging the electrochemically active surface area (ECSA). Construction of NiWO4/Mn0.3Cd0.7S S-Scheme Heterojunction for Superior Visible Light Photodegradation of Tetracycline

Weijie Yuan,Kanglong Zhang,Minghui Zhu,Jiamin Huang,Xue-Yang Ji,Dafeng Zhang,Junchang Liu,Xipeng Pu

The misuse of tetracycline (TC) poses a significant threat to the natural environment, necessitating the development of efficient methods for its degradation. Heterojunction photocatalysts have emerged as a promising approach for the degradation of such pollutants. This work aims to construct a novel NiWO 4 /Mn 0.3 Cd 0.7 S (NWO/MCS) S-scheme heterojunction using solvothermal coupled with mechanical mixing methods for efficient photocatalytic degradation of TC. The optimized NWO/MCS composite exhibited an 82% removal rate within 40 minutes under visible light irradiation, which represents an 18.4-fold and 1.13-fold improvement compared with pristine NWO and MCS, respectively. Various analytical methods and DFT calculations were utilized to characterize the structure and photophysical properties as well as prove the electron flow of the heterojunction, respectively. This work provides evidence of efficient charge carrier transfer between NWO and MCS within the S-scheme heterojunction, which contributes to the enhanced photocatalytic activity. The rational structural configuration of the S-scheme heterojunction has been shown to improve both the reduction and oxidation capabilities, offering a potential pathway for developing photocatalysts with high antibiotic removal efficiency.

Enhancing CO Selectivity in CO2 Photoreduction via Local Hydrophobic Modifications in S-Scheme Heterojunctions

Shicheng Liu,Xi Chen,Jing Xiang Ng,Xiong Liu,Qulan Zhou,Na Li,Shuzhou Li

To address the challenge of competitive H2O adsorption in photocatalytic CO2 reduction, localized hydrophobicity-modified S-scheme heterojunctions (WS/o-CN) were synthesized by combining WS2 and g-C3N4, which was modified by the addition of CTAB. Structural characterization and contact angle testing confirmed the formation of S-scheme heterojunctions and the specific structural role of CTAB. The optical, electrochemical properties, and gas adsorption capacity of the catalysts were analyzed, followed by in situ XPS and fs-TA tests to investigate the energy band structure and electron transfer paths. These results showed that localized hydrophobic modification reduces the surface proton concentration while maintaining efficient electron–hole separation in the S-scheme heterojunction. Testing the photocatalytic activity of WS/o-CN showed that the yield of CO reached 23.24 μmol g–1 h–1 with a high selectivity of 74.7%. Combined with molecular dynamics simulations and in situ DRIFTS tests, the results demonstrated that the introduction of the nonpolar long carbon chain CTAB effectively inhibits the adsorption of heterogeneous H2O on the catalyst surface while enhancing the maximum adsorption of CO2. The localized hydrophobicity reduces the proton concentration on the surface of g-C3N4, which in turn suppresses the absorption of photogenerated electrons by the HER reaction. This facilitates the efficient and selective conversion of CO2 to CO. This study highlights a surface engineering strategy that couples electronic structure optimization with interfacial wettability control, providing valuable insights into the design of selective and efficient photocatalysts for CO2-to-CO conversion.

V2O5/ZnIn2S4 composite nanoflowers: a high-performance visible-light photocatalyst with S-scheme heterojunction

Runlong Zhai,Lianchen Zhang,Yaru Cheng,Feng Teng,Peng Hu,Haibo Fan,Jiaming Song,Yang Jiao

The utilization of visible light for photocatalytic degradation has always been a key objective in the field of photocatalysis. In this work, we designed and synthesized an efficient visible-light photocatalyst: V 2 O 5 /ZnIn 2 S 4 (VOZ) nanoflower composite structure. The flower-like ZnIn 2 S 4 , self-assembled from nanosheets, was prepared via a hydrothermal method, followed by the in-situ growth of V 2 O 5 nanoparticles on the nanosheets of ZnIn 2 S 4 through a chemical reaction approach. The results from XPS, PL, ESR and other characterization methods revealed that V 2 O 5 and ZnIn 2 S 4 formed an S-scheme heterojunction, enabling efficient carrier separation and migration while retaining the oxidation capability of V 2 O 5 and the reduction capability of ZnIn 2 S 4 . Under visible light irradiation for 80 min, the composite achieved a 97.4 % degradation for methylene blue (MB), outperforming pure V 2 O 5 and ZnIn 2 S 4 by factors of 1.53 and 1.92, respectively. Similarly, VOZ-20 achieved over 90 % degradation of both methyl orange (MO) and rhodamine B (RhB) within 80 min of visible-light irradiation. Additionally, ICP-OES analysis revealed that the solubility of V 2 O 5 in water was significantly reduced after forming a composite with ZnIn 2 S 4 , which helps prevent vanadium ion contamination in aqueous environments. This composite, with its strong redox activity and simple synthesis, is highly promising for visible-light photocatalytic applications.

Yaqing Wen,Ge Zhu,Jie Li,Xingzhong Fang,Guofei Chen

Two series of novel poly(ester-amide-imide)s (PEsAIs) with pendant phthalimide side group were synthesized by copolymerization of phthalimide-hydroquinone bis(trimellitate anhydride) (PI-TAHQ), p-phthaloyl chloride (TPC) and other fluorinated monomers using the two-step method. These PEsAIs had glass transition temperatures (Tgs) in the range of 228 °C–296°C and coefficients of thermal expansion (CTEs) of 18–55 ppm·K−1. These films had good mechanical properties with tensile modulus of 3.7–5.7 GPa, tensile strengths of 92–153 MPa and elongations at break of 2.2%–8.3%. All films displayed good transparency with transmittances at 400 nm (T400nm) of 43%–79% and transmittances at 850 nm (T850nm) exceeding 89%, and these PEsAIs were amorphous. Especially, PEsAI-d-60 presented the best comprehensive performance with Tg of 296°C, low CTE of 18 ppm·K−1 and high transmittance (T400nm of 79%, T850nm of 91%), which exhibited the potential of this novel poly(ester-amide-imide) containing pendant phthalimide substituent in optical transparent materials.

Carbon Nanotube-Modified Nickel Hydroxide as Cathode Materials for High-Performance Li-S Batteries

Qianwen Jin,Yajing Yan,Chenchen Hu,Yongguang Zhang,Xi Wang,Chunyong Liang

The advantages of high energy density and low cost make lithium–sulfur batteries one of the most promising candidates for next-generation energy storage systems. However, the electrical insulativity of sulfur and the serious shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) still impedes its further development. In this regard, a uniform hollow mesoporous Ni(OH)2@CNT microsphere was developed to address these issues. The SEM images show the Ni(OH)2delivers an average size of about 5 μm, which is composed of nanosheets. The designed Ni(OH)2@CNT contains transition metal cations and interlayer anions, featuring the unique 3D spheroidal flower structure, decent porosity, and large surface area, which is highly conducive to conversion systems and electrochemical energy storage. As a result, the as-fabricated Li-S battery delivers the reversible capacity of 652 mAh g−1after 400 cycles, demonstrating excellent capacity retention with a low average capacity loss of only 0.081% per cycle at 1 C. This work has shown that the Ni(OH)2@CNT sulfur host prepared by hydrothermal embraces delivers strong physical absorption as well as chemical affinity.Keywords:Li-S battery;carbon nanotube;nickel hydroxide;cathode
