Tungsten trioxide (WO 3 ) has a wide application in environmental remediation due to its stability. Yet, the application of WO 3 is severely limited by its wide band gap and weak electron reduction ability. In this work, we intend to enhance the visible light absorption and photocatalytic performance by constructing an organic-inorganic Z-scheme system WO 3 @Cu@PDI. Apparently, WO 3 @Cu@PDI has excellent visible light absorption and photocatalytic degradation ability in the degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC). Under visible light irradiation, the degradation rate of composites is 40 times faster than that of sole WO 3 and 5 times than PDI. The photocatalytic activity of WO 3 @Cu@PDI toward TC still kept 85% after three reuses. We revealed that this high photoactivity arisen from the efficient carriers separation and the formation of Z-scheme junction. Importantly, this Z-scheme electron transfer pathway was confirmed by thorough experimental study. This work demonstrated the significant potential of WO 3 -based inorganic-organic Z-scheme photocatalyst in environmental remediation.

Novel Z-scheme Ag/AgI/AgBr/sulfonated polystyrene composite is prepared via ion-exchange followed by light reduction. The photocatalytic activities of as-synthesized samples are evaluated through the degradation of methyl orange (RhB) under visible light irradiation. The Z-scheme Ag/AgI/AgBr/SPs photocatalysts display excellent photocatalytic activity and stability compared with Ag/AgI and Ag/AgBr. The improved photocatalytic activity is mainly due to the combined effects of the Z-scheme structure of Ag/AgI/AgBr/SPs and the strong surface plasmon resonance effect of Ag 0 nanoparticles. Moreover, after four successive cycles, the Ag/AgI/AgBr/SPs photocatalysts have no obvious loss of activity for the degradation of RhB, illustrating that the Z-scheme Ag/AgI/AgBr/SPs photocatalysts are rather stable under visible-light irradiation.

In this study, Sb2S3/In2S3/TiO2 (SIT) heterojunction photocatalysts were prepared by a simple two-step hydrothermal method and applied to the photocatalytic degradation of levofloxacin (LEV). After 160 min of reaction under visible light, the SIT heterojunction photocatalyst degraded 10 mg L−1 LEV at a rate of 86.7%. The degradation of LEV follows pseudo-first-order kinetics with a rate constant 1.16 × 10−2 min−1, which is 1.42, 1.22 and 1.05 times higher than that of TiO2, SI and IT, respectively. Meanwhile, the SIT photocatalysts also showed high photocatalytic activity for other antibiotics. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of the ternary heterostructures was attributed to the full-spectrum response and the synergistic effect of the dual Z-type heterojunctions, which improved the visible light absorption and facilitated the charge separation. In addition, ˙OH and ˙O2− play a dominant role in the photodegradation process. This work contributes to the design of novel photocatalytic materials with dual Z-type heterojunctions and efficient photocatalysts for the degradation of antibiotics.

( Z )-1,3-pentadiene (Zp) exhibits a rigid planar molecular structure and is known for the typical 1,5-sigmatropic hydrogen shift, while it is commonly considered an inert monomer during polymerization. Herein, by utilizing the steric effect of the terminal methyl in Zp, the high trans -1,4-polypentadiene (HTPD) with highly ordered microstructure and well-defined sequence are successfully synthesized using barium dithymol/ tert- butyllithium/ tri -ethylaluminum trimetallic initiators based on anionic polymerization. The significant dependence of polymerization rate and trans -1,4-selectivity on ratio of Ba/Al/Li is demonstrated. The modification in microstructure ( trans -1,4 content ranging from 75 % to 92 %) and stereo-regularity (isotactic triad mm % > 65 %) are confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Compared with the poly(( Z )-1,3-pentadiene) (PZp) prepared by n -BuLi containing σ -ligand modifiers, the strategy using a large steric initiator to achieve regular insertion of Zp into polymer chains is proved to be effective. Kinetics studies demonstrated that Ba–Al–Li system is characterized by retarded anionic polymerization (RAP), yet it shows a quasi-living process and enabling the preparation of stereometric block polymers such as polyisoprene- b -HTPD (PI- b -HTPD). Thermal performance analysis indicates that the obtained highly ordered polymers show superior thermoplastic properties ( T m = 77.4 °C) with crystallinity as an elastomer. Furthermore, reasonable interpretations for the structure formation, sequence, and rate reduction effected by the Ba/Al/Li trimetallic initiator are proposed.

The utilization of solar energy in photocatalytic CO 2 reduction technology has demonstrated a significant potential in addressing the challenges of environmental pollution and energy shortage issues. Precise modulating of the photoreduction CO 2 pathway to achieve desired products is of particular interest, while the design of cost-effective and robust catalysts remains crucial. Herein, a series of BiOBr-based photocatalysts with different Co species were synthesized through a facile simple hydrothermal method in combination with the mechanical mixing. The Co species, which can be precisely modulated from Co 3 O 4 to CoOOH by adjusting the concentration of H 2 O 2 , were anchored into the BiOBr nanospheres to establish rich Z-scheme heterojunction interfaces. The Co species modulating of BiOBr-based Z-scheme heterojunction can achieve the transform photoreduction CO 2 products from CO to CH 4 . The CO selectivity in CO 2 photoreduction to reached 98.10 % (54.10 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 ), while the CH 4 selectivity over CoOOH/BiOBr reached 72.59 % (20.06 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 ). The outstanding photocatalytic performance and selective regulation of products are ascribed to the modulation of Co species in the BiOBr-based heterojunctions, which enables the customization of the photoreduction CO 2 pathway to achieve the desired products transformation from CO to CH 4 . In situ experiments and theoretical calculations reveal that the excellent CO selectivity observed in Co 3 O 4 /BiOBr heterojunction can be ascribed to a lower energy for *CO species compared with that of hydrogenation to *HCOOH and *CHO intermediates. Conversely, the presence of *HCOOH and *CHO intermediates with lower energy levels compared with *CO species achieved superior CH 4 selectivity in CoOOH/BiOBr heterojunction. This precise design strategy insights into the meticulous customization of Co species in semiconductor-based heterostructures at the molecular level, and enlightens the selective regulation of desired products for catalysis applications.

The construction of a heterojunction piezo-photocatalyst is one of the most effective strategies to accelerate charge transfer and improve catalytic performance. A novel ternary heterojunction was synthesized by introducing SnS nanoparticles (NPs) onto the surface of a NiAl-LDH/g-C 3 N 4 (LDH/CN) nanosheets via a facile hydrothermal method. The separation and transfer paths of carriers was studied for the piezo-photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline (TC), a common antibiotic, under ultrasonic and visible light irradiation. The SnS/LDH/CN piezo-photocatalyst generated a built-in electric field by the piezoelectric effect, which was beneficial for the separation of electron-hole pairs. Furthermore, the Z-scheme heterojunction endowed with a larger surface area, abundant active sites, and improved light-harvesting capacity further improved piezo-photocatalytic performance for TC. In particular, a CLS-30 (30 wt% of SnS on LDH/CN) heterojunction exhibited the highest degradation efficiency with 98.5 % removal of TC (20 mg/L) in 60 min, which was higher than that of ultrasonic vibration (38.2 %) and visible light illumination (79.4 %). TC degradation efficiency remained at almost 90 % after 4 consecutive cycles. This work provides a novel viewpoint for designing high-performance and stable heterojunction piezo-photocatalysts for energy limited wastewater remediation applications.

A novel ternary heterojunction material In 2 O 3 /In 2 S 3 /ZnIn 2 S 4 was synthesized, and a photoelectrochemical sensor was fabricated for the non-invasive test of dopamine (DA) in sweat. In 2 O 3 multihollow microtubules were synthesized and then In 2 S 3 was formed on their surface to construct a type-I heterojunction between In 2 S 3 and In 2 O 3 . ZnIn 2 S 4 was further introduced to form a Z-scheme heterojunction between In 2 S 3 /ZnIn 2 S 4 . Under photoexcitation, the photogenerated holes of In 2 O 3 transferred to the valence band of In 2 S 3 , superimposed with the holes produced by In 2 S 3 , leads to a significantly higher photocatalytic oxidation capacity of In 2 O 3 /In 2 S 3 /ZnIn 2 S 4 ternary composites than that of In 2 O 3 /In 2 S 3 . The Z-scheme heterojunction accelerates the transfer of photogenerated electrons accumulated on the type-I heterojunction. In the presence of DA, it is rapidly oxidized into polydopamine (PDA) by In 2 O 3 /In 2 S 3 , and the benzoquinone groups of PDA compete for the photogenerated electrons to reduce the current in the external circuit, whereby DA determination is achieved. Owing to the combination of type-I and Z-scheme heterojunction, the sensor showed extremely high sensitivity, with a detection limit of 3.94 × 10 −12 mol/L. It is one of the most sensitive methods for DA detection reported and has been applied to the determination of DA in human sweat. Graphical Abstract

To solve serious energy and environmental crises caused by rapid industrial development, Z-scheme photocatalytic system provides a potential strategy to as ideal photocatalyst with wide absorption range, high charge-separation efficiency and strong redox ability. In this work, we develop a facile time-dependent method to fabricate Z-scheme BiO 1-x Br/Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 photocatalyst with rich oxygen vacancies for visible light photocatalysis , which exhibits highly enhanced performance for antibiotics (CIP, 4-MAA etc.) photodegradation . A possible mechanism of the improved photocatalytic efficiency based on the Z-scheme photocatalytic system formed via oxygen vacancy is also proposed. Oxygen vacancies, acting as electron mediator, could significantly promote the separation of photoinduced charge carriers. Due to the increase of redox ability, it benefits to the production of superoxide radical ( O 2 − ) on the CB of BiO 1-x Br and hydroxyl radical ( OH) on the VB of Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 , respectively. This work demonstrates that a simple oxygen vacancy involved Z-scheme photocatalytic system could efficiently enhance the photocatalytic activity for the degradation of pollutants.

Chlorinated organic solvents (COSs) are extensively detected in contaminated soil and groundwater that pose long-term threats to human life and environment. In order to degrade COSs effectively, a novel catalytic composite of natural zeolite-supported nano zero valent iron (Z-nZVI) was synthesized in this study. The performance of Z-nZVI-catalyzed sodium percarbonate (SPC) in a heterogeneous Fenton-like system was investigated for the degradation of COSs such as 1,1,1-trichloroethane (1,1,1-TCA) and trichloroethylene (TCE). The surface characteristics and morphology of the Z-nZVI composite were tested using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Total pore volume, specific surface area, and pore size of the natural zeolite and the Z-nZVI composite were measured using Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method. SEM and TEM analysis showed significant elimination of aggregation and well dispersion of iron nano particles on the framework of natural zeolite. The BET N 2 measurement analysis indicated that the surface area of the Z-nZVI composite was 72.3 m 2 /g, much larger than that of the natural zeolite (0.61 m 2 /g). For the contaminant analysis, the samples were extracted with n-hexane and analyzed through gas chromatograph. The degradation of 1,1,1-TCA and TCE in the Z-nZVI-catalyzed percarbonate system were 48 and 39 % respectively, while strong augmentation was observed up to 83 and 99 %, respectively, by adding the reducing agent (RA), hydroxyl amine (NH 2 OH•HCl). Probe tests validated the presence of OH ● and O 2
●– which were responsible for 1,1,1-TCA and TCE degradation, whereas both free radicals were strengthened with the addition of RA. In conclusion, the Z-nZVI/SPC oxidation with reducing agent shows potential technique for degradation of groundwater contaminated by 1,1,1-TCA and TCE.

Coupling two different semiconductors to form composite photocatalysts is the most significant method for environmental remediation. In this regard, tube-like α-Fe2O3/Ag6Si2O7 heterostructures are synthesized via anchoring p-type Ag6Si2O7 nanoparticles (NPs) on the surface of n-type α-Fe2O3 short nanotubes (SNTs) by conventional wet-chemical routes. α-Fe2O3 SNTs are firstly fabricated by a hydrothermal method with the assistance of dihydrogen phosphate and sulphate. Then, Ag6Si2O7 NPs are anchored on α-Fe2O3 SNTs by an in situ deposition method, and the α-Fe2O3/Ag6Si2O7 p–n heterostructures are finally obtained. The morphologies, crystal structure, photocatalytic performance and photocurrent properties of as-synthesized α-Fe2O3/Ag6Si2O7 heterostructures are investigated. Six organic dyes are used for determining the high-efficiency Z-scheme photocatalytic activities of the as-obtained photocatalysts under ultraviolet and visible light (mercury lamp, 300 W). Compared with pure α-Fe2O3 SNTs, the photocurrent intensity of the α-Fe2O3/Ag6Si2O7 heterostructures is improved 62 times. The enhanced significant photocatalytic performance of α-Fe2O3/Ag6Si2O7 heterostructures could be attributed to charge transfer between Ag6Si2O7 NPs and the charge separation between Ag6Si2O7 NPs and α-Fe2O3 SNTs. These composite heterostructures are proposed to be an example for the preparation of other composite silicate photocatalysts for practical application in environmental remediation issues.

Here, we successfully designed and prepared the magnetic recyclable Z-scheme photocatalyst WO3/Fe3O4/g-C3N4 for the first time. The structures, morphology and photocatalytic properties of as-prepared photocatalysts were characterized by a series of modern characterization methods. According to the photoluminescence, transient fluorescence, transient photocurrent and electrochemical impedance spectra, the introduction of Fe3O4, with its high conductivity, into WO3/Fe3O4/g-C3N4 enhanced the lifetime of photogenerated holes and electrons based on the Z-scheme charge carrier transfer mechanism. More importantly, WO3/Fe3O4/g-C3N4 showed good recyclability without loss of apparent photocatalytic activity even after five cycles. Therefore, this kind of material may be a promising candidate for applications in the fields of environmental protection and sewage treatment.

This study primarily focused on the performance of 1,1,1-trichloroethane (1,1,1-TCA) and trichloroethylene (TCE) degradation involving redox reactions in zeolite-supported nanozerovalent iron composite (Z-nZVI)-catalyzed sodium percarbonate (SPC) system in aqueous solution with five different chelating agents (CAs) including oxalic acid (OA), citric acid monohydrate (CAM), glutamic acid (GA), ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), and L-ascorbic acid (ASC). The experimental results showed that the addition of OA achieved almost 100 % degradation of 1,1,1-TCA and TCE. The addition of CAM and GA also significantly increased the contaminant degradation, while excessive addition of them inhibited the degradation. In contrast, EDTA and ASC showed negative impacts on 1,1,1-TCA and TCE degradation, which might be due to the strong reactivity with iron and OH ● scavenging characteristics. The efficiency with CA addition on 1,1,1-TCA and TCE degradation decreased in the order of OA > CAM > GA > no CAs > EDTA > ASC. The extensive investigations using probe compound tests and scavenger tests revealed that both contaminants degraded primarily by OH ● and O 2
–● in chelated Z-nZVI-catalyzed SPC system. The significant improvement in 1,1,1-TCA and TCE degradation efficiency was accredited due to the (i) increase in concentration of Fe 2+ and (ii) continuous generation of OH ● radicals and maintenance of its quantity, ensuring more stability in the aqueous solution. Finally, the complete mineralization of 1,1,1-TCA and TCE in the OA-chelated, Z-nZVI-catalyzed SPC system was confirmed without any chlorinated intermediate by-products detected, demonstrating a great potential of this technique in the application of groundwater remediation.
