Black pigments faced strict limits due to the heavy metal toxicity (Co, Ni), limited resources, and high costs. This study report for the first time the application of a new Co- and Ni-free Na 2 Mn 3 O 7 as a ceramic black pigment with high near-infrared (NIR) reflectance. XRD, FE-SEM, EDS-Mapping, UV-V is , TEM, and CIELAB colorimetry were used to study its properties. The FE-SEM results show the product has irregular flake-like particles, proving layered structure nature of Na 2 Mn 3 O 7 . The color values of the black pigment are L∗ = 17.27, a∗ = −0.05, and b∗ = −1.25. Remarkedly, its L∗ value is lower than that of commercial carbon black, and other currently reported black pigments. The chromatic mechanism originates from the combined effects of Mn 4+ d-d electronic transitions and Mn 4+ →O 2− charge transfer transitions, which together result in broad absorption across the visible region and a pure black color. The glaze shows a shiny black color when applied the pigment as ceramic glazes at 1200 °C in air, and the color values are L∗ = 25.31, a∗ = −2.56, and b∗ = 0.11. Notably, the glaze after high-temperature achieves a near-infrared reflectance of 36.2%, which is only slightly lower than the 45% reflectance of the commercial black near-infrared pigment (Black L 0095). This research provides useful guidance for developing black pigments without Co and Ni.

Accelerating the regeneration of infected wounds necessitates a multifaceted therapeutic intervention that simultaneously eradicates bacterial pathogens, adapts seamlessly to dynamic tissue deformations, and provides uninterrupted barrier protection, ultimately fostering a pro-healing microenvironment. To address these requirements, a dynamic multi-network nanocomposite hydrogel (OG/PCDs) was developed that couples on-demand photothermal therapy with orchestrated tissue remodeling. Specifically, polydopamine carbon dots (PDA-CDs) with exceptional near-infrared (NIR) photothermal conversion efficiency were initially synthesized as broad-spectrum antimicrobial agents. By combining intrinsic physical membrane disruption with NIR-triggered photothermal ablation, the PDA-CDs exhibit potent antibacterial activity while effectively mitigating the risk of bacterial resistance development. Subsequently, the OG/PCDs hydrogel was rationally engineered via the integration of dynamic Schiff base linkages, boronate ester bonds, and UV-triggered free-radical polymerization. Benefiting from its sophisticated architecture, the resulting hydrogel exhibited rapid autonomous self-healing capabilities, reliable tissue adhesion, and an intelligent pH-responsive release profile tailored for acidic infective microenvironments. Crucially, the hydrogel inherits the superior photothermal performance of PDA-CDs, enabling the efficient elimination of both planktonic bacteria and resilient biofilms. In vivo evaluations using an S. aureus-infected wound model demonstrated that the NIR-activated OG/PCDs hydrogel effectively sterilized the wound bed (>99% bacterial eradication) and significantly accelerated tissue remodeling, culminating in an impressive 98.42% wound closure rate over 14 days. Overall, by synergizing targeted photothermal antimicrobial efficacy with dynamic structural adaptability, the nanocomposite hydrogel presents a promising therapeutic platform to combat bacterial infections and facilitate tissue regeneration.

Combining information from different images for multispectral image fusion can enhance human or machine perception. Nowadays, various luminescent materials with different spectral responses are used for image fusion, but this requires complex algorithms and systems to address pixel and position mismatches. Using a single luminescent material to obtain multispectral imaging can effectively avoid pixel mismatch and complex imaging processing. Herein, we report efficient blue-light-excitable ultrabroadband white emission and near-infrared (NIR) emission in the Te 4+ /Mo 4+ -codoped Cs 2 ZrCl 6 with a luminous efficiency of 94.2% (NIR region: 52.6%). Moreover, this compound also shows bright radioluminescence with a light yield of 55 000 photons/MeV in the visible light region. Benefiting from these fascinating optical properties, high-performance single-component white light-emitting diode (WLED), NIR LED, and X-ray scintillator were fabricated based on Te 4+ /Mo 4+ -codoped Cs 2 ZrCl 6 /polydimethylsiloxane flexible film. Particularly, we took bullfrog palm as the target object, and demonstrated its applications in white light imaging, NIR imaging, and X-ray imaging, respectively. Without pixel mismatch and complicated imaging processing, the pixel-level X-ray to NIR image fusion was realized, which can not only observe the wound of bullfrog palm, but also clearly obtain the structure and distribution of blood vessels and skeleton textures under the skin tissue of bullfrog palm.

Purpose Cervical cancer (CC) is still the fourth most common cause of cancer deaths in women. However, current biomedical imaging techniques exhibit inherent limitations in the diagnosis and treatment of CC. This study aims to develop a biomimetic nanoplatform based on tumor cell membranes, loaded with a palladium (Pd)-based computed tomography (CT) contrast agent and the near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent probe indocyanine green (ICG). This multifunctional nanoplatform is designed to integrate multimodal imaging with photothermal therapy (PTT), thereby improving the diagnostic accuracy and therapeutic efficacy against CC.Methods In this study, biomimetic nanoparticles (NPs), designated as M@Pd-ICG NPs, were synthesized by encapsulating Pd and ICG within HeLa cell membranes derived from cell-derived xenograft (CDX) models. Subsequently, the toxicity, biocompatibility, and tumor suppression capability of the M@Pd-ICG NPs were evaluated in vitro. In vivo, the multimodal imaging performance of the M@Pd-ICG NPs and their photothermal therapeutic efficacy under 808-nm laser irradiation were investigated in mouse model bearing subcutaneous cervical tumor. Results The M@Pd-ICG NPs were successfully prepared and exhibited favorable stability, excellent photothermal conversion efficiency (34.04%), and good biocompatibility, enabling homologous targeting and prolonged circulation time. The M@Pd-ICG NPs integrated the complementary advantages of NIR-II fluorescence imaging (900–1700 nm, NIR-II FI), photothermal imaging (PTI), and CT imaging. Both in vitro and in vivo studies demonstrated that, under 808-nm laser irradiation, M@Pd-ICG NPs induced significant photothermal effects and tumor ablation. Conclusion M@Pd-ICG NPs successfully integrate multimodal imaging and PTT, owing to their excellent targeting capability and good biocompatibility, demonstrating potential for further biomedical applications.

Rare-earth-doped luminescent materials have attracted extensive attention owing to their unique 4 f electronic configuration and optical properties. However, the research has largely remained confined to single application domains, and developing multifunctional luminescent systems and elucidating energy transfer mechanisms are essential for broadening their applicability. Herein, we select the double perovskite tungstate Ca 2 MgWO 6 as a host material, leveraging the intrinsic W-O charge transfer band to achieve efficient self-activated blue emission. The W-O charge transfer band further serves as an efficient energy transfer channel to activate the luminescence of lanthanide-based trivalent cations (Ln 3 + ), overcoming the limitation posed by mismatched excited-state energy levels among different Ln 3+ ions (i.e., Er 3+ , Ho 3+ , and Tm 3+ ). By introducing Yb 3+ as an energy sensitizer, the fluorescence intensity of Ln 3+ in visible and near-infrared regions under 980 nm excitation is significantly enhanced. Switching the excitation wavelength enables tunable photoluminescence signals, which leverage to design multimodal decodable anti-counterfeiting labels and information storage systems. Moreover, a sensitizer-mediated NIR-II ratiometric optical thermometer is constructed by means of phonon-assisted energy transfer, exhibiting a relative sensitivity of 0.52% K −1 . This work demonstrates a strategy for designing next-generation, high-performance lanthanide luminescent materials that can be employed in various sensing and photonics applications.

Near-infrared II (NIR-II, 1000–1700 nm) fluorescence
imaging
enables deep-tissue analysis, but conventional “always-on”
probes suffer from high background that compromises the signal-to-background
ratio for low-abundance targets. Activatable probe strategies could
mitigate this issue, yet most existing designs rely on fluorescence
resonance energy transfer with acceptors confined to the visible region,
hampering efficient signal quenching in the NIR-II window. Here, we
present a generalizable strategy based on morphology-engineered nanometal
surface energy transfer (NSET) to construct a NIR-II core–satellite
nanoprobe for intracellular miR-21 detection. By systematically tuning
the branch aspect ratio of gold nanostars (AuNSs), their localized
surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) absorption can be red-shifted to
achieve precise spectral overlap with the NIR-II emission of Ag 2 S quantum dots. Guided by DNA self-assembly, an AuNS@Ag 2 S core–satellite structure with controllable interparticle
spacing is established, enabling an initial fluorescence quenching
efficiency of up to 88%. Upon target recognition, miR-21-triggered
strand displacement reaction induces the dissociation of Ag 2 S quantum dots from the AuNS surface, resulting in a pronounced NIR-II
fluorescence “turn-on” response. The nanoprobe exhibits
exceptional performance, including a low detection limit of 75.8 pM,
robust linearity, single-base mismatch discrimination capability,
and enables visualization of differential miR-21 expression in living
cells. Notably, high-contrast NIR-II signals are retained at penetration
depths of up to 15 mm in tissue-mimicking experiments. This work establishes
an NSET-based analytical platform through precise spectral matching
and rational structural engineering, providing a robust strategy for
high signal-to-background biosensing and in situ analysis of low-abundance
miR-21 in deep tissues.

The second near-infrared window (NIR-II, 1000-1700 nm) phosphor-converted LEDs (pc-LEDs) show great potential for portable spectroscopic detection. However, high-performance long-wavelength (>1350 nm) NIR-II phosphors that combine broadband emission, high thermal stability, and efficient blue-light excitation, are still relatively scarce. Herein, a Lu 3 Ga 5 O 12 :Cr 3+ ,Ni 2+ phosphor was developed via a Cr 3+ sensitization strategy. Cr 3+ and Ni 2+ stably occupy the [GaO 6 ] octahedral sites, enabling efficient energy-transfer from Cr 3+ to Ni 2+ . The optimal sample exhibits broadband NIR-II emission at 1427 nm with an FWHM of 277 nm, an EQE of 23.1%, and excellent thermal stability (I 373K /I 293K = 81.5%). The pc-LED based on this NIR-II phosphor achieves penetration imaging and non-destructive identification of daily necessities. More notably, rapid spectral differentiation of common plastics (PA, PE, PP, PVC and PET) was successfully realized using the NIR-II luminescence of the as-prepared phosphor. This work provides guidance for constructing high-performance NIR-II phosphors and promotes the practical deployment of NIR spectroscopy in resource recycling.

Diabetic wounds are characterized by excessive oxidative stress, persistent inflammation, and impaired tissue regeneration, which collectively hinder normal wound healing. Here, we developed a near-infrared (NIR)-responsive sodium alginate hydrogel incorporating nano‑iron sulfide (nFeS) through mild gelation mediated by calcium carbonate and glucono-δ-lactone. The resulting SA-nFeS hydrogel exhibited a porous structure, favorable rheological properties, hydrogen peroxide-responsive degradation, radical-scavenging activity, and good cytocompatibility. NIR irradiation accelerated the release of Fe from the hydrogel, increasing the cumulative release from approximately 35.5% to 75.4% over 48 h. In cells exposed to oxidative stress, the NIR-treated SA-nFeS hydrogel markedly reduced intracellular reactive oxygen species and promoted Nrf2 nuclear translocation, accompanied by decreased Keap1 expression and increased expression of the downstream antioxidant proteins HO-1, SOD1, SOD2, and GPX4. Furthermore, the hydrogel suppressed pro-inflammatory macrophage markers and cytokines while increasing the expression of CD206, Arg-1, and IL-10, indicating a shift toward a pro-healing macrophage phenotype. In a streptozotocin-induced diabetic full-thickness wound model, SA-nFeS combined with NIR irradiation achieved approximately 93% wound-area reduction by Day 14 and promoted re-epithelialization, granulation tissue formation, and collagen deposition. No obvious histopathological abnormalities were observed in the major organs. Collectively, these findings demonstrate that the NIR-responsive SA-nFeS hydrogel promotes diabetic wound repair by activating endogenous antioxidant defense and modulating the inflammatory microenvironment, providing a promising therapeutic platform for chronic wound management. Integrating photonic crystals (PCs) with hydrogel actuators enables synergistic regulation of actuation behavior and structural color, with promising applications in mechanical engineering and bionics. In this study, a bilayer opal hydrogel was fabricated via a two-step photopolymerization method: a polyacrylamide (PAM) hydrogel layer composited with polystyrene (PS) PCs for stable structural color, and a poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) hydrogel layer loaded with gold nanorods (Au NRs) for near-infrared (NIR) light responsiveness. Upon temperature or NIR stimulation, the as-prepared hydrogel exhibited reversible bending-recovery behavior with stable structural color in water, liquid paraffin, and air, driven by unbalanced volume changes between the two layers. It achieved a maximum bending angle of 240° and 220° within 10 min in 45 °C water and liquid paraffin, respectively. Notably, unlike temperature stimulation which induced overall deformation in liquid environments, NIR stimulation endowed the hydrogel with spatially selective local bending, realizing a maximum bending angle of 170° in air. Reflection spectrum analysis revealed environment-dependent spectral shifts: in water, both the bending and recovery processes were accompanied by a red shift (less 16 nm) of the reflection peak, while in liquid paraffin and air, a red shift occurred during bending and a blue shift was observed during recovery. This discrepancy originates from differences in water exchange efficiency between the hydrogel and its surrounding environments. The bilayer opal hydrogel shows great potential in high-performance flexible actuators such as underwater sensors and light-controlled micro-robots. This work also reveals a regulation mechanism of environment-material interactions on the responsiveness of PC-based smart hydrogels, providing theoretical and technical guidance for their applications in complex environments.

The performance and service life of a traditional NIR phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes sealed by epoxy resin are affected over time due to the low thermal conductivity of the casting material that leads to excessive heat build-up, an accelerated aging and discoloration of the resin. Here, we report the synthesis and characterization of a highly efficient NIR emitting LiAl 5 O 8 :Cr 3+ nanocrystals embedded in transparent glass-ceramic. Under 415 nm light excitation the emission, the new NIR phosphor exhibits NIR emission in sharp lines covering 650∼1000 nm to originate from the spin-allowed 4 T 2 / 2 E→ 4 A 2 transition of Cr 3+ ions, with an emission peak at ∼ 720 nm and an optimal PLQY of about ∼ 41.28%. The NIR emission originates from the spin-allowed 4 T 2 / 2 E→ 4 A 2 transition of Cr 3+ . The transparent glass-ceramic showed excellent luminescence thermal stability; the integrated luminescence intensity measured at 383 K is ∼ 66.55% of that measured at room temperature (303 K). We constructed a NIR pc-LED light source device by coupling a piece of LiAl 5 O 8 :Cr 3+ nanocrystal-laden glass-ceramic and a purple LED chip and performed characterization of the luminescence properties of this device. The potential application of this device in NIR imaging was demonstrated. Our study provides a basis for further development of thermal stable and highly efficient transparent glass-ceramic based NIR luminescence materials and the exploration for their applications.

Compared to the first near-infrared (NIR-I) window (650–1000 nm), the second near-infrared (NIR-II) window (1000–1700 nm) is more valuable for photothermal treatment (PTT) due to its deeper tissue penetration and lower phototoxicity. However, the therapeutic efficacy of PTT remains suboptimal owing to the inherently low photothermal conversion efficiency (PCE) of existing materials. Therefore, the development of nanomaterials with high PCE is a promising strategy for improving anti-tumor therapy. In this study, hollow semimetal PtTe 2 nanorods were synthesized. Their unique electronic properties and hollow structure contribute to achieving high PCE under NIR-II irradiation, while simultaneously promoting reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. Additionally, PtTe 2 catalyzed the endogenous conversion of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) into oxygen (O 2 ) and hydroxyl radicals (•OH), further enhancing anti-tumor effects via chemodynamic therapy (CDT). In vivo experiments confirmed the excellent biocompatibility of PtTe 2 , and laser treatment following PtTe 2 administration significantly inhibited tumor growth, demonstrating its favorable therapeutic efficacy. This study establishes a new nanoplatform for the treatment of malignant tumors through photothermal/photodynamic/chemodynamic therapy, providing valuable insights for future research on multifunctional cancer therapies.

Silver sulfide (Ag 2 S) quantum dots (QDs), which emit light in the near-infrared II window (NIR-II, 1000–1700 nm), exhibit unique and remarkable potential in bioluminescence. However, their widespread application in experimental research is currently limited by a relatively low quantum efficiency. Cation exchange reactions have emerged as a remarkably versatile approach for synthesizing nanomaterials with adjustable structures and customizable compositions. In this study, we developed a NIR-II fluorescent probe based on Sn-doped silver sulfide (Sn-Ag 2 S) QDs via a straightforward cation exchange method. The stoichiometric ratios of precursors play a crucial role in tailoring the optical properties of the resultant materials during structural modifications involving cation exchange processes. By optimizing the ratio of Ag and Sn, we obtained ca. 16-fold quantum yields enhancement of Sn-Ag 2 S QDs in the NIR-II range, specifically around strong emission peak at ca. 1200 nm. Following hydrophilic modification, the Sn-Ag 2 S-GSH/MPA QDs exhibited high NIR-II fluorescence signal signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) with a ca. 1.7-fold increase compared to Ag 2 S-GSH/MPA QDs in the femur of mice, showing significant potential for bone imaging. To further investigate the QDs biodistribution mechanisms within osseous microenvironments, we devised a comprehensive multimodal analytical approach incorporating: (1) optical spectral analysis, (2) ultrastructural validation through transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and (3) spatial resolution mapping via laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM). These integrated methodologies consistently demonstrated preferential QDs accumulation within trabecular bone marrow compartments, revealing distinct biodistribution patterns in mineralized tissues.
