The couple of supercapacitors' high power density and batteries' high energy density endows aqueous zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitors (ZIHSCs) a perspective candidate for next-generation energy storage devices. Biomass-derived hierarchical porous carbon with excellent wettability towards aqueous electrolyte is regarded as a promising cathode for ZIHSCs applications. Herein, a N/O co-doped hydrophilic carbon with hierarchical porous architecture is conversed from protein enriched recycled badminton feathers via a facile and scalable strategy. The resultant carbon presents hierarchical porous architecture with high surface area and mesopore-governed pore size distribution, rich dual-doping of N/O heteroatoms and good water wetting behavior. The all-round teamwork of these unique properties provides numerous interfacial active sites plus extra reversible redox reaction for high energy density, and speedy kinetics for high power density. Incredibly, as-assembled ZIHSC device displays an ultrahigh capacity of 225.3 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 with an appreciable capacity retention of 73.8 mAh g −1 even at a 1000-fold amplified current density, thereby delivering admirable energy and power densities of 201.4 Wh kg −1 and 83.6 kW kg −1 . Most satisfyingly, an ultralong cycling life with no loss in capacity is achieved after 40,000 cycles even at 50 A g −1 . Therefore, by taking advantage of its intrinsic component, the conversion of biomass waste to high performance carbon-based cathode material holds a broad prospect and practical significance.

To date, the efficient photocatalytic conversion of CO 2 into high-value C2 products remains a great challenge. Herein, the Au-CeO 2 nanocomposite with Au-O-Ce sites at the micro-interface was developed to achieve a highly selective conversion of CO 2 into C 2 H 6 . This can be partially ascribed to the formation of key intermediates of COCO* was confirmed via in-situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, indicating that the Au-CeO 2 micro-interface could prompt the multi-electron reduction of CO* before desorption, and enable the production of C2 species. Moreover, theoretical calculations suggested that Au-O-Ce sites at the micro-interface could reduce the energy barriers for the formation of COOH* and COCO*, facilitating the production of C 2 H 6 . Therefore, the Au-CeO 2 nanocomposite exhibited a C 2 H 6 production rate of 11.07 µmol g −1 h −1 and high electron selectivity of 93.1 % (product selectivity: 65.3 %), which is comparable with most state-of-the-art photocatalysts.

During the production and transportation of deep-water oil and gas, the low-temperature and high-pressure operating environment might induce hydrate formation and eventual blockage, which poses a serious threat to the flow assurance. Furthermore, the formation, aggregation and deposition characteristics of hydrate would become more complicated in the presence of asphaltene. Consequently, clarifying the effect of asphaltene on hydrate nucleation and growing process plays an important role in the safety production and flow assurance of deep-water oil and gas field. The kinetic characterizations of hydrate nucleation and growth in W/O systems containing asphaltene were investigated via experimental research, molecular dynamics simulations and mathematical modeling. Results revealed that the hydrate nucleation induction time increased with the increase of asphaltene content. The inhibition of hydrate nucleation by asphaltene in high-pressure (5 MPa) experiments was more pronounced than that in low-pressure (3 MPa). On the other hand, asphaltene restrained hydrate formation and the total gas consumption decreased with the increase of asphaltene content. The dynamic adsorption process of asphaltene at oil–water interface and the evolution of the surface coverage with time were elucidated by jointly solving the Ward-Tordai and Langmuir equation. Combined with the above aspects, the induction time model containing asphaltene was developed, which could provide a new perspective and methodology for deep-water flow assurance

The emulsion separation of oily wastewater is always a challenge topic in both fundamental research and practical application. In this paper, polyvinyl alcohol formaldehyde composite sponges (PVF/PVF) with hierarchical pore structure were established by physical absorption/chemical crosslinking and hydrophobic modification via introducing hydrophobic long alkyl chain. As a result, pore size was adjusted from 74.8 µm of pristine PVF to less than 20 µm of hydrophobic PVF, the water contact angle was 120° for final as-prepared sponges, i.e. size sieving and surface wettability could meet the need of emulsion separation. As-prepared sponges could separate W/O (water-in-oil) emulsion efficiently only under the action of gravity, with a maximum flux of 2.9 × 10 5 L m -2 h −1 bar −1 and separation efficiency nearly 100 %. More importantly, the as-prepared sponges displayed excellent reusability, which could be recovered by simply washing. These composite sponges, which were obtained by a simple method and low cost, could be easily scaled up in practical production process, providing an outstanding candidate material for efficient W/O emulsion separation.

To enhance the peroxidase-like performance and its application in detection of toxic o -aminophenol ( o -AP), a kind of bimetal Cu–Zn oxide-based mesoporous nanosphere (Cu 2/3 Zn 1/3 O PNPs) was constructed under microwave-radiation conditions. Its mesoporous microstructure and peroxidase-like catalytic activity were investigated in detail. The results showed that Cu 2/3 Zn 1/3 O PNPs possessed a high specific surface area of 34.89 m 2 g −1 and a well-distributed mesoporous size of approximate 6.07 nm, which endowed the superior peroxidase-like performance. The material catalyzes the oxidization of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) with K m / V max of 0.104 mM/3.79 × 10 −8 M·s −1 in the presence of H 2 O 2 . Especially o -AP could exclusively deteriorate the characteristic UV–Vis absorbance intensity at 653 nm ( A 653 ) of the Cu 2/3 Zn 1/3 O PNPs-TMB-H 2 O 2 system with obvious color change from blue to colorless. Under the optimal conditions, the effect of some interfering substances was low and the limit of detection (LOD) for o -AP was 1.65 × 10 −8 mol/L (S/N = 3). When applied to the colorimetric detection of o -AP in practice, the recovery was between 96.1 and 107.2% with R.S.D. less than 2.04%. The mechanism of synergic-enhancement peroxidase-mimic activity of Cu 2/3 Zn 1/3 O PNPs and its exclusive colorimetric response to o -AP were proposed as well. Graphical abstract

It is particularly challengeable to achieve C=O selectivity for Pd catalysts in thermal catalytic hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde (CAL). This work offers a new electrochemical strategy that enables an unexpected switch toward C=O bond for CAL hydrogenation, based on the specific interaction between CAL and electrolyte-modulated Pd surface. Under galvanostatic electrolysis, guanosine 5′-monophosphate-modulated Pd electrode affords a record cinnamyl alcohol (COL) selectivity of 90.3% in neutral catholyte with no sacrifice of CAL conversion, showing the faradaic efficiency of 68.2%. It is of great interest to find that the aromatic moiety of CAL determines the preferential activation toward C=O bond over Pd surface under electric field. It is reported for the first time that selective hydrogenation of α, β-unsaturated aldehydes can be altered by electrochemical environment located between Pd electrode and surrounding electrolyte involving alkali cation along with organic solvent.

It is important but challenging to develop non-noble metal catalysts with high activity and selectivity for biomass conversion. The activation of C═O bond is a crucial step in biomass upgradation. Herein, a series of Ni-xP/Al2O3 catalysts with different P/Ni molar ratios were prepared for the conversion of ethyl levulinate to γ-valerolactone. The developed Ni-0.38P/Al2O3 catalyst was 5.4 times more active than conventional Ni/Al2O3 based on turnover frequency and significantly outperformed the state-of-the-art non-noble metal catalysts. The unique catalytic performance was ascribed to the formation of Ni3P phase, which was identified by several characterizations. The results of DFT calculation and characterization by XPS and CO-FTIR revealed that electron was transferred from Ni to P with the formation of Niδ+ sites. In situ FTIR for the surface reaction indicated that Niδ+ acted as a new active site to activate the C═O bond, which rendered the high intrinsic activity of Ni3P for the C═O hydrogenation of EL.

This work suggested that Cu2+ion coordinated by the peptide with a histidine (His or H) residue in the first position from the free N-terminal reveals oxidase-mimicking activity. A biotinylated polymer was prepared by modifying His residues on the side chain amino groups of lysine residues (denoted as KH) to chelate multiple Cu2+ions. The resulting biotin-poly-(KH-Cu)20polymer with multiple catalytic sites was employed as the signal label for immunoassay. Prostate specific antigen (PSA) was determined as the model target. The captured biotin-poly-(KH-Cu)20polymer could catalyze the oxidation ofo-phenylenediamine (OPD) to produce fluorescent 2,3-diaminophenazine (OPDox). The signal was proportional to PSA concentration from 0.01 to 2 ng/mL, and the detection limit was found to be eight pg/mL. The high sensitivity of the method enabled the assays of PSA in real serum samples. The work should be valuable for the design of novel biosensors for clinical diagnosis. Keywords:fluorescent immunoassay;peptide;copper;O-phenylenediamine;prostate specific antigen

An aerobic single-chamber microbial fuel cell (MFC) system coupled with a photocatalytic-bioelectrochemical anode is constructed for the synergistic degradation of o-chlorophenol (2-CP). Dissolved oxygen (DO) is utilized by photocatalytic and biological processes to enhance the removal of 2-CP. The degradation efficiency for 2-CP is significantly improved (DO decreases from 6.17 to 0.02 mg/L in 8 h), showing that the mean 2-CP removal efficiency (300 mg/L) is 67.1%, higher than those obtained with the anaerobic photocatalytic MFC (31.4%), aerobic MFC (20.5%), and anaerobic MFC (17.7%). Interesting, DO enhances the abundance of Geobacter sp. from 2.31 to 22.5% while enriching the biomass. In addition, the abundance of chlorophenol-degrading bacteria Azospirillum sp. and electrogenic bacteria Comamonadaceae fam. increase from 0.3 to 17.0% and 0.48 to 32.1% with illumination, respectively. Illumination and DO facilitate the cathodic oxidation-reduction reaction and upgrade electricity production from 134 to 255 mW/m 2 . The electrogenic bacteria rely on the electron transfer pathway of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide dehydrogenase , succinate dehydrogenase, and terminal oxidase. Unlike the traditional anaerobic mode, the intimate coupling of photocatalysis and bio-electrocatalysis under aerobic conditions provides a more effective strategy for treating wastewater containing refractory pollutants and broadens the scope of MFC technology applications.

Chemical fixation of CO 2 with epoxides is an effective option to achieve sustainable synthesis of cyclic organic carbonates. Although metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising catalysts for this reaction, their low stability in aqueous solutions makes this application infeasible. In an effort to overcome this limitation, cobalt-based metal–organic framework (Co(II)MOF) nanoribbons have been prepared by coordinating the Co(II) ions with a new ligand (C 16 H 12 N 4 O 4 ) full of oxygen and nitrogen moieties. Strong chemical interactions occur between the adsorbed CO 2 and oxygen/nitrogen atoms in this porous MOF structure. Co(II)-MOF nanoribbons with tetra- n -butylammonium bromide acted as cocatalysts with ∼97% yield of cyclic carbonate (reaction kinetic rate of 14.7 × 10 6 µmol g -1 h −1 ) upon the cycloaddition of epichlorohydrin (ECH) to CO 2 (>99% reaction selectivity under solvent-free reaction condition at 80 °C, 3 h and 1 MPa CO 2 pressure). This work may open a new avenue for chemical fixation of CO 2 by rational design of the components and morphology of MOF-based catalysts.

Li-CO 2 batteries have attracted widespread attention due to their high energy density and environmental friendliness . However, problems such as the activation of CO 2 and the decomposition of discharge products (Li 2 CO 3 and C) are the key to restrict its development. Herein, an amine-based o-phenylenediamine (OPD) as a bifunctional liquid catalyst is introduced into Li-CO 2 battery , which realizes a great improvement of electrochemical performances by optimizing CO 2 reduction and evolution reaction process. Experiments coupled with theoretical calculations verify that the introduced OPD accelerates the migration of the discharge intermediates and makes the discharge products grow through the solution phase pathway, which greatly eliminates the passivation of the cathode as well as releases the battery capacity. Moreover, OPD, as a liquid redox mediator, can effectively promote the decomposition of discharge products, greatly reduce the charging potential and improve round-trip efficiency. Additionally, thanks to the increased activity of CO 2 reduction reaction (CDRR) and CO 2 evolution reaction (CDER) catalyzed by OPD, the cycling performance of Li-CO 2 battery has also been improved.

Cobalt (Co) based nanomaterials are widely used to construct glucose enzyme-free electrochemical sensors. However, the correlation between anion species and the electrocatalytic activity of Co based nanomaterials remains unproven. In this paper, Co 3 X 4 with different anions (X = O, S, Se) were synthesized for electrochemical sensing of glucose. Co 3 X 4 was characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX), powder X-ray diffractometry (XRD), and electrochemical techniques. The results showed that anion substitution had a significant effect on the electrocatalytic properties of Co 3 X 4 , and Co 3 Se 4 showed the strongest electrocatalytic activity for the oxidation of glucose. The sensor based on Co 3 Se 4 exhibited excellent performance for glucose analysis with a linear range from 2 μM to 0.71 mM, a high sensitivity of 1327.6 μA mM −1 cm −2 and a low detection limit of 0.3 μM, which demonstrates Co 3 Se 4 as a new nonenzymatic electrocatalyst for glucose sensing.
