Traditional zirconia (ZrO 2 ) fibers suffer from severe limitations in mechanical performance under extreme conditions due to high-temperature phase transformation-induced cracking, abnormal grain growth, and inherent brittleness, making it difficult to meet the stringent requirements of fields such as aerospace and energy systems. This work proposes an innovative fabrication strategy that successfully achieves in-situ growth of an amorphous carbon coating layer on the surface of Al/Y co-doped ZrO 2 nanofibers through electrospinning and hot-stretching processes. In this work, zirconium acetate acts as both zirconium source and solvent, simplifying precursor preparation. The hot-stretching process utilizes the micropores on the fiber surface to form an in-situ amorphous carbon layer, which significantly enhances the mechanical properties of the fibers: tensile strength reaches 8.08 MPa, and the fiber membrane maintains structural integrity after 500 bending cycles at 80% strain, demonstrating excellent fatigue resistance and elastic recovery capability; it also exhibits outstanding thermal shock resistance at extremely low (-196°C) and ultra-high (1350°C) temperatures. Through the key innovation of introducing an amorphous carbon layer via hot-stretching, this work successfully integrates high strength, superior flexibility, and outstanding fatigue resistance into ZrO 2 fibers. Furthermore, owing to its high porosity (92%), the fiber membrane exhibits ultra-low thermal conductivity and effective sound absorption. Ultimately, this provides a reliable solution for multifunctional ceramic fiber materials applied in high-temperature environments (up to 800°C).

Oxalic acid etching creates porous surface on micron-Al particles. • Porous Al surface enlarges contact area with I 2 O 5 and MoO 3 oxidizers. • MoO 3 triggers low-temperature preheating and high-temperature Mo + I 2 exotherm. • Etched ternary thermite reduces activation energy by up to 106 kJ·mol −1 . • Ignition delay decreases 170 ms; flame temperature rises 749 °C. Micron-sized Al/I 2 O 5 thermite exhibits inferior ignition performance and low combustion efficiency due to the dense Al 2 O 3 passivation layer, which restricts the interfacial contact between Al and the oxidizer. Herein, a synergistic dual strategy combining oxalic acid surface etching (0.3 mol·L −1 ) of micron Al powder and MoO 3 incorporation is proposed to fabricate Al/I 2 O 5 @MoO 3 ternary thermite. Acid etching constructs uniform porous surface structures and substantially enlarges the Al-oxidizer contact area while maintaining a high active Al content. The introduced MoO 3 triggers a low-temperature exothermic reaction with Al at ∼380 °C, which preheats the thermite system and facilitates subsequent I 2 O 5 decomposition, as well as the high-temperature Mo-I 2 reaction at ∼1000 °C. Benefiting from the synergistic effects, the optimized thermite achieves a maximum activation energy reduction of 106 kJ·mol −1 , an ignition delay time reduction of up to 170 ms, and a flame temperature increase of 749 °C. The optimal MoO 3 mass fraction in the oxidizer is determined to be 0.1–0.2, while excessive MoO 3 induces combustion instability. This work provides mechanistic insights and practical guidelines for the design of high-performance Al/I 2 O 5 -based thermites via synergistic surface engineering and oxidizer modulation. Although the availability of many nickel-based sulfides oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts with excellent intrinsic activity, very few of them perform well in anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE). Their poor stability remains the core challenge in large-scale alkaline water electrolysis. In this work, the use of amorphous FeOOH nanoparticles is proposed as a modifier of Al doped Ni 3 S 2 (FeOOH/NiAlS) to develop robust OER electrode suitable for AEMWE. Under operation conditions, FeOOH protect the bulk sulfides from further corrosion, in turn effectively improves the catalyst utilization due to highly conductive property. Meanwhile, surface reconstructed Al-NiFeOOH serves as the actual active phase, monitored by in situ Raman and EIS. Density functional theory (DFT) reveals that Fe doping optimize their adsorption property, elongates the Ni O bond, and act as a new active site to augment OER activity. Specifically, the reconstructed FeOOH/NiAlS shows an ultra-low overpotential of 316 mV at 1 A cm −2 and high stability at 0.5 A cm −2 over 400 h. The corresponding AEMWE requires a cell voltage of only 1.72 V to reach 1 A cm −2 , while maintaining stable operation for 1400 h at 0.5 A cm −2 , providing a promising prospect for practical applications. Owing to the uniqueness of their structure, remarkable specific surface area, and exceptional impermeability, two-dimensional layered nanomaterials (including graphene, hBN, MXene, LDH, and nanoclays) broadly act as reinforcing fillers to optimize the effectiveness of organic coatings in corrosion prevention. constituting the primary influence on coating performance is the state of their dispersion within the polymer matrix. Herein, a simple, exfoliation-friendly, and cost-effective method is reported for synthesizing functional LDH-Cdot nanohybrids for metal anticorrosion. A 3 nm carboxyl-rich carbon dot (Cdot) was prepared via pyrolysis and introduced into the LDH galleries, where it adsorbed onto LDH to form LDH-Cdot nanohybrids. Compared with pure LDH, LDH-Cdot exhibits a significantly improved water dispersion. By incorporation of the LDH-Cdot nanocomposite into a waterborne epoxy matrix, a corrosion-resistant coating featuring a controlled thickness of around 53 μm was successfully constructed. EIS results demonstrated that the impedance modulus at 0.01 Hz decreased in the sequence LDH-Cdot epoxy > LDH epoxy > pure epoxy. Notably, the |Z|0.01 Hz value of the LDH-Cdot epoxy coating was still retained at 4.05 × 108 Ω·cm2 following 90 days of immersion. Findings from LEIS and corrosion product analyses indicated that carbon dots anchored onto LDH are capable of coordinating with metal ions, which facilitates passivation layer formation and effectively slows corrosion kinetics.

Micro moulds are widely used in the fabrication of micro/nano structures, where wear resistance is critical. This study presents a mixed phosphonic acid self-assembled monolayers (SAMs)-modified Zr-Cu-Al-Ni bulk metallic glass (BMG), which not only retains hydrophobic properties but also demonstrates exceptional high-temperature tribological performance. The wear behavior and mechanisms were systematically studied in the range from room temperature (RT) to 250 °C. Tribological tests were conducted using a multifunctional friction and wear tester in a ball-on-disk configuration, with polyetheretherketone (PEEK) balls as the counterface material against both bare and SAMs-modified Zr-based BMG specimens. The evolution of wear mechanisms in the PEEK-SAMs-modified BMG tribosystem at different temperatures was analyzed, particularly focusing on the coupled effects of the PEEK glass transition temperature and the melting and decomposition temperatures of SAMs on the tribosystem. Results demonstrate that the wear rate of Zr-Cu-Al-Ni BMG exhibits a progressive decrease within the RT to 140 °C range, declining from 53.26 × 10 −6 mm 3 N −1 m −1 to 0.156 × 10 −6 mm 3 N −1 m −1 .At RT, abrasive and minor oxidative wear dominate. Between 90 °C and 140 °C, molten SAMs films provide stable lubrication, with the friction coefficient dropping to 0.004 at 110 °C, indicating full lubrication, while maintaining hydrophobicity. At 150 °C, exceeding the glass transition temperature of the ball material (PEEK), the ball softens and increases the wear rate to 0.324 × 10 −6 mm 3 N −1 m −1 . The wear mechanism in this stage is still dominated by oxidative wear due to high temperature. Interestingly, at 200-250 °C, the friction coefficient follows a different trend, initially increasing, then decreasing, and stabilising after 800-1000 s. At stabilization, the friction coefficient matches that of unmodified BMG, while the wear rate rises to 17.205 × 10 −6 mm 3 N −1 m −1 , attributed to the thermal decomposition of SAMs and lubrication film failure. sam softening promotes adhesive wear and becomes the dominant mechanism. Meanwhile, interfacial property analysis systematically reveals the temperature-dependent effects on the chemical bonding, molecular ordering, and adsorption density of SAMs, elucidating their collective impact on wear evolution. This study demonstrates the exceptional wear resistance of SAMs-modified Zr-Cu-Al-Ni BMG, particularly at 110 °C, and further reveals that molecular interface engineering provides a novel design strategy for high-temperature wear-resistant metallic systems beyond conventional bulk strengthening approaches.

To address the competitive adsorption of NO 2 during gaseous iodine capture from spent fuel reprocessing off-gas, a hydrazine-functionalized aluminum-based metal-organic framework, CAU-10-N 2 H 3 , was constructed based on CAU-10. Considering the difference in kinetic diameter between I 2 and NO 2 , hydrazine functionalization was employed to synergistically regulate the pore size and pore electronic environment. After the introduction of -N 2 H 3 , the median pore size decreased from 0.6174 to 0.5186 nm, and the NO 2 uptake was reduced by 42.91%. Meanwhile, the introduced electron-rich -N 2 H 3 groups strengthened the interaction between the framework and iodine species, leading to adsorption capacities of 551.99 and 155.93 mg·g −1 for I 2 and CH 3 I, respectively, at 150 °C. Dynamic breakthrough experiments further showed that the I 2 adsorption capacity was only slightly affected by NO 2 , decreasing from 259.3 mg·g −1 under N 2 to 218.8 mg·g −1 under 5% NO 2 . Mechanistic analyses revealed that the introduced -N 2 H 3 groups promoted the conversion of I 2 into polyiodide species, thereby strengthening both iodine adsorption and fixation. These results demonstrate that introducing electron-rich functional groups to synergistically regulate pore size and pore environment is an effective strategy for improving the selective iodine capture performance of Al-MOFs in complex spent fuel reprocessing off-gas.

Hollow Li/Al-LDHs were rationally designed to overcome diffusion limitations of granular adsorbents. • Hydrophilic binder and spinning-parameter regulation optimized hollow Li/Al-LDHs. • Finite element analysis revealed the mass-transfer enhancement of hollow structures. • Optimized hollow Li/Al-LDHs showed fast Li + kinetics and efficient dynamic cycling. Adsorption has become a central approach for industrial salt lake lithium extraction. A structural engineering strategy is developed to rationally fabricate hollow fiber-structured Li/Al layered double hydroxide granules (HF-LDHs) with enhanced mass transfer to overcome the extraction efficiency limitation from conventional granulation methods. The hollow architecture provides shortened diffusion pathways through a favorable pore microstructure and dual accessible surfaces for Li + directional migration with markedly accelerating intraparticle transport. HF-LDHs are characterized by good hydrophilicity and structural integrity with a compressive of 4.99 MPa, and the optimized granules can reach adsorption equilibrium within 60 min, which is shortened by over half to that of these traditional lithium adsorbent granules. Fixed-bed dynamic evaluation further demonstrates a rapid 2 h saturation and high effluent quality with a Mg 2+ /Li + ratio below 2. Moreover, HF-LDHs maintain a stable working capacity of about 7.20 mg/g over 20 cycles, with a high Li + extraction rate of 2.70 (mg/(g·h)), highlighting their potential for low-grade lithium recovery. For self‑biased circulators, oriented Ba 1-x La x Fe 12-x Al x O 19 (x = 0.1–0.5) hexaferrites were fabricated by solid‑state reaction. Partial substitution of Ba 2+ by La 3+ and Fe 3+ by Al 3+ progressively contracts the lattice, increases grain size, and induces local lattice distortion, evidenced by Raman peak shifts and broadening. Magnetic properties evolve in two distinct trends: remanence and coercivity decrease monotonically; saturation magnetization M s , anisotropy constant K 1 , and anisotropy field H a increase to a peak at x = 0.4 ( M s = 78.91 emu/g, H a = 12.94 kOe) and then decline. The non‑monotonic M s arises from competition between magnetic dilution by Al 3+ and La 3+ ‑induced lattice contraction that enhances superexchange interactions. The M r / M s decrease is dominated by the weakening of exchange coupling due to non-magnetic Al 3+ substitution, with additional contributions from grain growth-induced multi-domain formation. The enhanced H a originates from lattice contraction strengthening spin‑orbit coupling at the 2b site, with the decline at x > 0.4 correlated with Raman‑detected local disorder accumulation. Through a finely-resolved composition gradient (∆x = 0.1), this study decouples the competing mechanisms and identifies the optimal composition at x = 0.40, underscoring the value of fine compositional tuning for precise property optimization. This work provides a systematic understanding of the competing mechanisms that determine the magnetic performance, offering guidance for composition design of oriented hexaferrites for self‑biased circulator applications.

Coal fly ash (CFA), a typical industrial solid waste rich in Si and Al with associated critical elements (Ga, Ge, REEs), poses environmental risks while having high resource utilization potential. Its valuable elements are hosted in aluminosilicate glass, hindering their recovery. Na 2 CO 3 roasting releases Na 2 O with strong lattice-disrupting capability, leading to the depolymerization of aluminosilicate lattices. In this study, experimental characterization and HSC Chemistry thermodynamic calculations were combined. The experimental and thermodynamic results were used to elucidate the evolution of the aluminosilicate lattice and the reconstruction of mineral phases. The reaction was substantially promoted at a Na 2 CO 3 /CFA mass mixing ratio of 1, and residual mullite, quartz and Na 2 CO 3 were no longer detected when the temperature increased to 850℃. The main reaction occurred at 600–900℃ and proceeded in three stages. (1) Reaction initiation stage (≤ 600℃): Some crystal defects and short-range ordered sodium aluminosilicate structures formed, while the overall lattice was not completely destroyed. (2) Structural reorganization stage (700–800℃): Inert aluminosilicate crystalline phases progressively disappeared, while nepheline-type sodium aluminosilicates and sodium silicate formed, with reaction intermediates coexisting with newly formed phases. (3) Recrystallization and stabilization stage (850–900℃): The roasting reaction was nearly complete, and the crystalline fraction of the roasted products consisted mainly of nepheline-type sodium aluminosilicates and sodium silicate, while a substantial amorphous component remained. The glassy phase and quartz contained in CFA could account for the lower temperature required for Na 2 CO 3 roasting compared with that required for pure minerals. This work provides theoretical support for CFA resource utilization.

Cu-based water–gas shift catalysts suffer severe sintering due to Cu oxidation state changes and particle aggregation. To address this challenge, Al-doped Fe 3 O 4 spinel supports were constructed. The optimized Cu/Fe 3 O 4 -A 3 catalyst with an Al/Fe molar ratio of 3:3 achieved near-theoretical CO conversion (98.24% vs. the thermodynamic equilibrium of 98.50%) and maintained >97% conversion over 100 h. HAADF-TEM and in-situ XRD analysis revealed that CuFeAlO 4 spinel cages suppress Cu migration (Δd 311 < 0.02 Å at 300 °C), while the formation of Cu–O–Al covalent bonding strengthens metal-support interaction and inhibits Ostwald ripening. Combined DFT and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations further demonstrate that Cu–O–Al covalent bonding enhances the anchoring of Cu species, and increases the migration energy barrier to 1.37 eV—approximately 1.5 times higher than that of conventional Cu/Fe 3 O 4 . This work establishes a paradigm for sintering-resistant catalyst design via spinel-interface engineering.

Wood fibers offer promising sustainable alternatives to synthetic options; however, their susceptibility to mold limits their widespread adoption. Here we report a facile strategy to fabricate anti-mold wood fibers via in-situ growth of Zn-Al layered double hydroxides (LDHs) followed by stearic acid (STA) post-coating. Electrostatic interactions drive the adhesion of LDH to wood, while STA provides surface hydrophobicity, as revealed by molecular dynamics simulations. The resulting wood fibers exhibit remarkable anti-mold activity against common fungal species, including Aspergillus , Trichoderma , and Penicillium , showing clear inhibition zones and no fungal growth in accelerated tests. Further analyses reveal that the direct antifungal effect arises from electrostatic absorption, oxidative stress induction, and metal ions release, while the indirect effect is due to hydrophobicity. Our findings demonstrate a scalable and cost-effective approach for functionalizing natural fibers to combat microorganisms, broadening the application scope of cellulose-based materials in construction, packaging, and biocomposites. We anticipate this work to be a starting point for developing wood fiber composites with intrinsic mold resistance for health- and eco-conscious applications.

Pure n-BiF 3 is facilely prepared and uniformly loaded around μ-Al. • The n-BiF 3 serves dual functions: etching Al 2 O 3 shell and engaging in thermite reaction. • The n-BiF 3 significantly enhances the thermal oxidation, electric ignition, and combustion characteristics of μ-Al. • The effects of n-BiF 3 as an additive is positively dosage-dependent (1 wt% ∼ 5 wt%). Micron-sized Al (μ-Al) features high energy density and low cost, yet its surface alumina (Al 2 O 3 ) passivation film drastically limits energy release. In this study, pure nano-BiF 3 (n-BiF 3 ) was prepared by a mild chemical precipitation method. Al-BiF 3 composite particles with different n-BiF 3 loading were prepared by ultrasonic dispersion and vacuum filtration, and further composited with CuO and NH 4 ClO 4 (AP) to construct energetic composites, so as to investigate their modification effect on μ-Al. Structural characterization indicates that n-BiF 3 can be uniformly loaded around the surface of μ-Al without obvious segregation. Thermal analysis shows that n-BiF 3 releases fluorine-containing substances at high temperatures to etch the Al 2 O 3 shell. Adding n-BiF 3 at mass fractions of 1 wt%, 3 wt% and 5 wt% significantly improves thermal oxidation activity and oxidation weight gain rate by 46.5% ∼ 127.0% relative to untreated Al. Ignition and combustion tests demonstrate that n-BiF 3 effectively shortens ignition delay by 9.2% ∼ 12.8% for Al/CuO systems and by 24.6% ∼ 33.7% for Al/AP systems, shortens combustion time, raises the pressurization rate by 110.0% ∼ 490.0% for Al/CuO systems and 66.7% ∼ 416.7% for Al/AP systems, elevates system peak pressure and combustion temperature, and suppresses particle agglomeration. The above results reveal that n-BiF 3 has dual functions of etching the oxide layer and engaging in the thermite reaction, and the effect is enhanced with the increasing addition amount. This study provides a new strategy and experimental basis for the efficient modification of μ-Al. Download: Download high-res image (525KB) Download: Download full-size image
