Ag nanoparticles anchored on oxygen vacancy-rich DUT-67 for highly efficient photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI)

Xiang Yulong,Ji Xinbin,Dong Xiaoli,Wang Yu,Zheng Nan,Luo Yang,Zhao Honglin,Yan Chumin

Charge separation, transfer, and recombination are crucial factors that influence the efficiency of photocatalytic Cr(VI) reduction. The construction of Schottky junctions can remarkably facilitate the spatial separation of charge carriers. To address the issue of heavy metal pollution in industrial wastewater, an Ag-DUT-67 Schottky junction photocatalyst was synthesized by depositing silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) onto the DUT-67 surface through a photoreduction technique. The findings indicate that Ag NPs are evenly distributed and coordinated with the sulfur atoms in the DUT-67 ligands. This modification not only elevates the oxygen vacancy content but also broadens the light response range. A Schottky barrier is established at the Ag-DUT-67 interface, which effectively reduces carrier recombination. Notably, Ag-DUT-67–2 demonstrates a remarkable Cr(VI) reduction efficiency of 98% within 30 min, with a reaction rate that is 3.4 times as much as pristine DUT-67. Additionally, Ag-DUT-67–2 shows excellent stability in high-concentration Cr(VI) solutions and in the presence of interfering ions, coupled with good recyclability. This study offers a novel framework of interface engineering and performance enhancement of MOF-based photocatalysts for heavy metal reduction.

Rationally designed Z-scheme CuInS2/rGO/protonated g-C3N4 heterostructure for enhanced visible-light Cr (VI) reduction

Linke Zhao,Yang Li,Lili Li,Gongke Wang,Hairui Liu,Hongjing Li,Arif Nawaz,Haifa Zhai

A Z-scheme CIS/rGO/p-CN heterostructure was designed. • CIS/rGO/p-CN exhibits the highest visible-light activity for Cr(VI) photoreduction. • rGO serves as the solid-state electron mediator to switch the charge transfer mode. Hexavalent chromium (Cr (VI)), a highly toxic metal ion readily soluble in aqueous environments, poses significant threats to human health. Herein, a novel Z-scheme CuInS 2 /rGO/protonated g-C 3 N 4 heterostructure was designed with rGO serving as the solid-state electron mediator between CuInS 2 and protonated C 3 N 4 . The samples were systematically characterized using XRD, FTIR, SEM, TEM, XPS, PL, and UV–vis spectroscopy techniques. This flower-like hierarchical structure CuInS 2 /rGO/protonated g-C 3 N 4 exhibits enhanced visible-light photocatalytic activity for Cr (VI) photoreduction. Specifically, it demonstrates a 98% reductive efficiency for Cr (VI) within 20 min at pH= 4 and stable photocatalytic performance. The results indicate that the integration of rGO nanosheets significantly enhances the photocatalytic performance of the CuInS 2 /rGO/protonated g-C 3 N 4 heterostructure by weakening the built-in electric field between CuInS 2 and protonated C 3 N 4 and switching the charge transfer mode from a conventional p-n junction to a Z-scheme mechanism. One-step hydrothermal co-carbonization of waste paper with phytic acid for efficient removal of Cr(VI)

Yixi Li,Zhuofan Sun,Xingcan Huang,Liulian Huang,Hui Wu,Lihui Chen,He Xiao

The formation of phytic acid decorated waste paper-derived hydrothermal carbon (WPC-P) were achieved. • The introduction of phytic acid enables to improve the oxygen-containing groups and specific surface area of WPC-P. • The phytic acid modified WPC-P exhibited upgraded adsorption activity of Cr(VI). • The mechanism of Cr(VI) removal was generated by electrostatic, chelation, and reduction interactions. Biomass-derived hydrothermal carbon has garnered considerable interest as a promising approach for heavy metal wastewater treatment. In this study, hydrothermal carbon derived from waste paper and coupled with phytic acid (WPC-P) was synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal process as an effective adsorbent for Cr(VI) removal. Characterization results indicated that P and O were dispersed uniformly on the surface of WPC-P. The introduction of phytic acid could greatly increase the specific surface area and number of active functional groups. The results of adsorption tests indicated that WPC-P exhibited highly efficient removal performance for Cr(VI) with maximum uptake of 174.05 mg·g −1 . The adsorption capacity of WPC-P was 10 times higher than that of WPC at 2 h. Analysis of the experimental data using adsorption kinetic and isotherm models revealed that the adsorption process of WPC-P fitted both the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model well. After five consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles, the WPC-P retained about 87% of its initial capacity. The enhanced adsorption performance, ascribed to the introduction of phytic acid, could be attributed to the complexation, electrostatic interactions and reduction reactions induced by active functional groups on WPC-P. This work reported a simple method to prepare carbon adsorbents from biomass waste, which showed great potential for treating chromium-containing wastewater.

Defect-engineered Cr-UiO-66 catalysts for enhanced hydroxyacetone production from 1,2-propanediol via promoted H2O2 activation

Jiarui Li,Bolun Mei,Zhouxuan Zang,Yi Yu,Guoji Liu,Li Xu

A series of Cr-UiO-66 catalysts with ligand-vacancy defects was prepared for the oxidative dehydrogenation of biomass-derived 1,2-propanediol to hydroxyacetone. • A volcano-shaped trend between defect level and hydroxyacetone yield was established. • Moderate ligand vacancies balance H 2 O 2 conversion and the selective formation of hydroxyacetone. • •OH radicals were identified as key species for H 2 O 2 -driven ODH of 1,2-propanediol. The oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of biomass-derived 1,2-propanediol (1,2-PDO) to the high-value chemical hydroxyacetone (HA) is a meaningful route for upgrading renewable feedstocks into value-added multifunctional chemicals. In this study, Cr-UiO-66 catalysts with tunable content of ligand vacancies were synthesized for the conversion of 1,2-PDO to HA. Notably, a volcano-shaped relationship was observed between defect density and HA yield. The optimized 0.4Cr-UiO-66 catalyst achieved an HA yield approximately 3 times that of pristine UiO-66, reaching 12.9% at 45 °C after 2 h. Moreover, the catalyst sustained its ODH performance over five reaction runs. Regulating the content of ligand vacancies was shown to modulate the acidic properties of Cr-UiO-66 and H 2 O 2 activation to generate •OH radicals. A moderate level of ligand vacancies enabled a balance between H 2 O 2 activation and selective HA formation, resulting in improved performance. This study highlights ligand-vacancy engineering as an effective strategy for regulating H 2 O 2 activation over UiO-66-based catalysts. It provides meaningful insights for tailoring structural defects in UiO-66 for the ODH valorization of biomass derivatives. Bottom-up construction of betaine-grafted iCOF: Selective adsorption of Cr(VI) via precise host-guest interaction

Zhihui Wen,Erli Ding,Yongjie Bai,Xiaochan Liu,Yourong Wei,Ge Li,Benhua Xu,Bingxin Liu

A novel ionic COF was synthesized firstly using betaine molecule as the quaternary ammonium source. • This iCOF enables facile synthesis and low cost ($88.31/kg), showing promising potential for practical applications. • Abundant binding sites and confined pores enable the material to achieve excellent Cr(VI) adsorption. • The iCOF achieves superior adsorption selectivity for Cr(VI) against competing anions ( Cl − Cl− , Br − Br− , NO 3 − NO3− , SO 4 2 − SO42− , and CO 3 2 − CO32− ). Due to the high toxicity of Cr(VI), the development of adsorbents for effective elimination of Cr(VI) from wastewater is urgently required. Covalent organic frameworks(COFs) show great promise in heavy metal remediation. However, most COFs suffer from high costs and poor anti-interference performance, which severely restricts their practical applications. To address these limitations, natural betaine was firstly utilized as precursor to construct a novel quaternary ammonium-grafted COF structure (iCOF-BHC) via a bottom-up strategy. Grafted betaine introduces abundant quaternary ammonium sites and extra amide sites. Combined with the hydrazone groups and confined pore of the framework, these functional moieties exert multi-synergistic effects to construct precise host-guest interactions, thereby realizing superior selective adsorption toward Cr(VI). The equilibrium adsorption capacity of iCOF-BHC at 10 °C is 132.73 mg g −1 (under ambient winter conditions in Qinghai Province),and further heating significantly improves adsorption rate and uptake capacity. iCOF-BHC exhibits outstanding selectivity for Cr(VI) in the presence of competing anions ( Cl − Cl− , Br − Br− , NO 3 − NO3− , SO 4 2 − SO42− and CO 3 2 − CO32− ), as well as excellent recyclability, with negligible attenuation in adsorption capacity after six cycles. Furthermore, compared with the vast majority of existing COFs, it exhibits significant cost advantages and is more suitable for practical industrial applications. This work develops a facile, low-cost, and innovative strategy for the fabrication of cationic COFs, providing a viable strategy and experimental basis for the efficient adsorption of Cr(VI) from wastewater. MXene-Functionalized Polyethyleneimine Gel and Its Adsorption-Assisted Photocatalysis Behavior for Efficient CR(VI) Removal from Water

Lian Wang,Weiming Zhang,Chang Peng,Shu Chen

Graphical A multifunctional gel can achieve efficient remediation of Cr(VI)-contaminated water by reducing over 90% of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) after highly efficient adsorption of Cr(VI) through adsorption-assisted photocatalysis. This multifunctional gel holds significant application potential in wastewater treatment. The high-performance removal of highly toxic Cr(VI), along with its efficient conversion into less toxic Cr(III), will hold promise for water treatment. Herein, a novel transition metal carbide (MXene)-functionalized polyethyleneimine (PEI) gel has been designed for efficient Cr(VI) removal from water. The titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) generated by self-oxidation of MXene acts as a photocatalytic species, while MXene serves as a medium for charge separation and transfer. The PEI networks provide numerous adsorption-active sites (i.e., amine groups), stabilize the photocatalytic species (i.e., TiO 2 ), and medium (i.e., MXene), thereby endowing the composite gel with both adsorption and photocatalysis ability. Its adsorption behavior conforms to pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir adsorption model, with a maximum adsorption capacity of up to ∼431 mg·g −1 . Importantly, this composite gel can convert about 90% of highly toxic Cr(VI) into less toxic Cr(III) through adsorption-assisted photocatalysis way. This work presents foundational findings for developing multi-functional gels aimed at wastewater treatment.

Efficient removal of Cr(VI) from water by quaternized chitin/branched polyethylenimine biosorbent with hierarchical pore structure

Xingtang Liang,Xiaoyu Fan,Runmei Li,Shirong Li,Shukun Shen,Daodao Hu

A novel chitin-based biosorbent (QCP) was synthesized by cross-linking quaternized chitin and branched polyethylenimine with the aid of epichlorohydrin for efficient removal of Cr(VI) from water. Because it possessed both quaternary ammonium groups and amino groups as well as the hierarchical pore structure, QCP presented a maximum adsorption capacity of 387.7 mg/g according to the Langmuir isotherm at 25 °C. The biosorption of QCP achieved the equilibrium within 40 min and followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. QCP worked well even in the solution with high pH and high content of competing anions and, it exhibited an excellent reusability. The main Cr(VI) uptake mechanism was confirmed to be electrostatic attractions between Cr(VI) anions and quaternary ammonium groups as well as the protonated amino groups, and followed by partial reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) by amines and hydroxyls. This work may provide a potential for Cr(VI) removal by chitin-based biosorbents.

User safety and herbicidal efficacy of innovative paraquat nanoherbicides based on MIL-101(Cr)@MoS2@Fe3O4 nanomaterials

Zejun Cao,Ruixi Xiao,Yuxia Chen,Jiangtao Dong,Xuezhong Du

The widespread global use of paraquat (PQ) is attributed to its high herbicidal efficacy and low cost, however, the unresolved issue of its fatal toxicity to humans after ingestion remains a major challenge. The nanocarriers MIL-101(Cr)@MoS 2 @Fe 3 O 4 (MMF) are synthesized to load PQ through the strong π–p electron coupling between the delocalized π electrons of PQ and the localized p electrons of S atoms of MoS 2 at the interface, and then encapsulated with chitosan to construct magnetically recyclable PQ nanoherbicides with excellent stability and biosafety. The release of PQ from the nanoherbicides in simulated human gastrointestinal environments is inhibited (“PASS0” logic gate) from the source, thereby enhancing user safety. Under natural sunlight conditions, the near-infrared photothermal effect of MMF weakens the strong interfacial π–p electron coupling between PQ and MMF, resulting in the release of PQ (“YES” logic gate). The PQ nanoherbicides maintain the herbicidal efficacy of bare PQ in practical applications. The residual nanoherbicides can be easily recovered using magnets, with the collection ratios of 97.8 % and 91.1 % in water and soil, respectively, at a magnetic field strength of 0.5 T. Seed dressing, cytotoxicity, and mouse models demonstrate that the nanoherbicides have excellent biosafety for both plant growth and PQ-ingesting users. The creative PQ nanoherbicides simultaneously address the challenging issues of user safety, herbicidal efficacy, and environmental friendliness from the source.

Dual applications of oil-rich coal-based carbon dots: sensitive detection of Cr(VI) and fingerprint imaging

Zishuo Gu,Jing Liao,Yaming Zhu,Jiao Huang,Yueqin Tang,Junxia Cheng,Li Yue,Xuefei Zhao

In response to the growing demand for novel materials in environmental monitoring and public safety, this study successfully synthesized fluorescent oil-rich coal-based carbon dots (ORC-CDs) via a green and facile hydrothermal route using oil-rich coal of Xinjiang as the carbon precursor. The fluorescence properties were employed as the key criterion to systematically investigate the effects of synthesis parameters, including reaction temperature, time, and nitric acid concentration. After optimization, the optimal conditions were identified as 160 °C for 12 h. The chemical structure and optical characteristics of the ORC-CDs were thoroughly characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy, and fluorescence spectroscopy. In metal ion selectivity experiments, Cr(VI) exhibited a significant fluorescence quenching effect on the ORC-CD aqueous solution at specific concentrations. Additionally, the fluorescence detection capability of ORC-CDs for Cr(VI) was further tested, and the quenching mechanism of Cr(VI) in ORC-CD aqueous solution was explored. The results showed that the fluorescence response of ORC-CDs to Cr(VI) exhibited a good linear relationship within the concentration range of 0–60 µmol L−1, with a detection limit of 0.29 µmol L−1. In the spiked recovery experiment with actual water samples (tap water and river water), the spiked recovery rate ranged from 99.1% to 106.6%, confirming the accuracy of this method in actual water sample testing. Additionally, due to their excellent fluorescence properties, ORC-CDs were successfully applied to potential fingerprint imaging, quickly presenting clear fingerprint features on smooth substrate surfaces. This work provides both theoretical and experimental support for the application of coal-based carbon dot-based multifunctional fluorescence platforms in environmental monitoring and public safety.

Novel Preparation of Two Oxidized Starch Formulations for Removal of Cr (VI) Ions From an Aqueous Solution

Xuesheng Qin,Chengzheng Wang,Zhe Zhang,Wei Ma

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) has attracted much attention because it is a harmful pollutant. In this study, acid hydrolyzed hydrothermal double modified starch (AHS) and hydroperoxide oxidized starch (HOS) are prepared from natural starch and used for the reduction of chromium (VI) in aqueous systems. The effects of hydrothermal acidolysis and oxidative modification of starch on the reduction rate of Cr(VI) are discussed, including the changes of solubility, swelling power, particle size, content of straight-chain starch, and carbonyl/carboxylic group content. The results of response surface methodology (RSM) optimization show that the influence of reaction conditions on the reduction rate of Cr(VI) by NS is as follows: reaction time > initial pH of solution > reaction temperature > starch to Cr(VI) mass ratio; and on the reduction rate of Cr(VI) by AHS and HOS is as follows: initial pH of solution > reaction time > starch to Cr(VI) mass ratio > reaction temperature.

Stability optimization of iron-based catalysts: Application of Cr-enriched alloy steel catalyst in ozonation pharmaceutical wastewater

Siqi Xiao,Luming Ma,Wenhui An,Pengfei Shen

Catalytic ozonation for advanced treatment of industrial wastewater has proved to be effective, and the stability of the catalyst is crucial for the long-term application of the ozonation process in practical engineering. In this study, the electrochemical characteristics of four iron (Fe) shavings: alloy steels (38CrMoAl and 40Cr) and carbon steels (A3 and 45#) were investigated, and a new citric acid-optimized H 2 O 2 modification method was proposed. The low open circuit potential (OCP) of carbon steels indicated that they were more likely to be oxidized therefore required shorter modification times. The higher the OCP of alloy steels, the higher H 2 O 2 concentration was required to enhance modification efficiency. By adding citric acid, the rapid modification of alloy steel was achieved, and the catalysts exhibited lower passivation current (I p ), indicating a lower rate of substrate loss and a longer lifetime of alloy steel catalysts. Furthermore, chromium (Cr) enrichment occurred in the oxide layer of alloy steel catalysts. The Cr/Fe (atomic ratio) in oxide layer for 38CrMoAl and 40Cr increased from 0.018 to 0.040 and from 0.010 to 0.037, respectively. The presence of CrOOH and Cr 2 O 3 within the oxide layer reinforced the layer’s overall structural integrity and enhanced its protection for the internal substrate, making the catalysts more resistant to adapt to high-salinity wastewater. Through laboratory tests, it was found that among the four catalysts, 38CrMoAl showed the highest stability and good catalytic activity with low Fe loss concentration. Therefore, the pilot-scale application effect of 38CrMoAl catalyst was evaluated. In the advanced treatment of pharmaceutical wastewater, chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total organic carbon (TOC) removals were 56.3% and 32.4%, respectively. These results showed that the stability of catalyst can be improved by optimizing the selection of steel, and the introduction of citric acid achieved Cr enrichment effect and amplified the potential stability advantage of alloy steel. The research provides guidance on raw material selection for catalyst preparation to different industries' wastewater treatment, especially in high-salinity wastewater ozonation treatment, which can realize the long-term stable application of catalyst.

Xuezhen Feng,Yakun Zhang,Chunyan Liang,Jingang Yu,Xinyu Jiang

A novel adsorbent, poly-(dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride) (PDDA) functionalized graphene oxide (GO) further decorated with ferro ferric oxide (Fe 3 O 4 ) nanoparticles, has been developed and used for instantaneous Cr(VI) removal from aqueous solution, and a reliable direct filtration-adsorption was achieved. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Raman spectra (Raman), zeta potential measurement, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) were adopted to confirm and investigate the chemical compositions, surface properties, morphological and electrochemical performance of the as-prepared magnetic nanocomposite (denoted as GO/PDDA/Fe 3 O 4 ). The maximum adsorption capacity of GO/PDDA/Fe 3 O 4 for Cr(VI) was 141.68 mg/g at pH = 2, and the desorption-regeneration results exhibited GO/PDDA/Fe 3 O 4 could be a potential prospective nanocomposite used for instaneous filtration-adsorption of Cr(VI) from aqueous solution in real-life situations due to its fast, effective and stable properties.
