A novel signal amplified electrochemical microRNA (miRNA) biosensor was developed here using hemin-G-quadruplex as signal unit. A hairpin structure DNA probe (43 bases) was immobilized on the gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) modified gold electrode surface with the segment at its 3′-end complementary to miRNA-21 (22 bases) and the segment at its 5′-end complementary to capture DNA (21 bases). Upon hybridization with the target miRNA-21, the hairpin structure was unfolded, which was further hybridized with capture DNA loaded on AuNPs. The AuNP contained two kinds of DNA; one was complementary to the hairpin structure DNA probe, while the other was aptamer for hemin. The electrochemical signal of hemin self-assembled in the center of G-quadruplex structure of the aptamer was measured using chronoamperometry. The miRNA-21 target was analyzed with a detection limit of 3.96 pM. Using isolated total RNA from human gastric carcinoma BGC-823 cells, human breast adenocarcinoma MCF-7 cells, human hepatocarcinoma HepG2 cells and human colon cancer HT-29 cells, the assay detected specifically miRNA-21 and over-expression of oncogene miRNA-21 was demonstrated.

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is a non-metallic semiconductor photocatalyst which is widely used in water treatment. Improving the charge separation and transfer efficiency of g-C3N4 has been a hot research topic. In this work, a sulfur-doped algal graphitic carbon nitride (SCN) was synthesized by microwave using thioacetamide as an elemental sulfur dopant. The alga-like structure endowed g-C3N4 with a higher specific surface area and visible light absorption. Combined with experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the introduction of S further changed the orbital structure and increased the charge density, leading to a shift of energy level positions as well as enhanced photogenerated electron transport. The combination of morphology adjustment and suitable elemental doping allowed the materials to achieve a significant improvement in the photocatalytic degradation performance of organics and the antibacterial activity. The degradation rate of rhodamine B (RhB) by SCN-60mg reached 0.21873 min−1, which was 12 times higher than that of bulk g-C3N4 (BCN). Similarly, SCN-60mg degraded malachite green (MG), neutral red (NR), methyl orange (MO), methylene blue (MB), tetracycline (TC), and ciprofloxacin (CIP) by 100%, 93%, 90%, 97%, 79%, and 86%, respectively, within 30 min. Meanwhile, SCN-60mg still exhibited excellent photocatalytic performance over four degradation cycles. In addition, SCN-60mg showed nearly 100% antibacterial efficiency of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) within 1 hour. This study provides a new idea for fabricating effective photocatalysts for complex wastewater treatment.

As a semiconductor material, g-C 3 N 4 has attracted attention with proficient charge storage and transfer characteristics. However, there is a limitation in its applications because of the low specific surface area and the small number of active sites associated with the bulk structure, and there is a lack of in-depth understanding of its optical properties. In this paper, we have discussed four different morphologies of g-C 3 N 4 , including bulk (B–CN), hexagonal hollow tubular (T-CN), alveolate (A-CN), and hollow spherical (S–CN) that have been prepared using the supramolecular self-assembly strategy. To examine the changes in morphology that affect the physiochemical and optical properties of the g-C 3 N 4 . With the change in the ratio of the raw materials and reaction condition, the number of defects in g-C 3 N 4 represented by uncondensed NH 2 /-NH groups changes, thus inhibiting the recombination of photogenerated carriers. Meanwhile, the changes in morphology affect the microstructural composition of g-C 3 N 4 , which changes the energy band positions and fluorescence properties of the material. This work provides some valuable information on the morphological regulation of g-C 3 N 4 and how to modulate the morphology to change the properties of g-C 3 N 4 .

Membrane separation offers an efficient and energy-saving process for extracting rare helium from natural gas. Among them, mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) containing two-dimensional (2D) materials are considered potential gas separation membranes. Herein, 2D g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets with nanoporous structure are incorporated into the polyimide (PI) matrix to prepare MMMs for efficient He separation. The incorporated g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets generate additional gas transport and sieving channels in MMMs. As a result, the PI/g-C 3 N 4 MMM comprising 0.5 wt% g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets exhibits a He/CH 4 selectivity of 160.4 with He permeability of 40.7 Barrer, which are 2.0 and 3.2 times higher than the pure PI membrane, respectively. Moreover, the membrane also shows good stability at elevated temperatures or a continuous 150 h long-term operation. Therefore, the remarkable gas separation performance and excellent stability make the membrane promising for gathering helium from natural gas.

Artificial photosynthesis by microbe-semiconductor biohybrid systems has been demonstrated as a valuable strategy in providing sustainable energy and in carbon fixation . However, most of the developed biohybrid systems for light harvesting employ heavy metal materials, especially cadmium sulfide (CdS), which normally cause environmental pollution and restrict the widespread of the systems. Herein, we constructed an environmentally friendly biohybirid system based on a typical acetogenic bacteria, Moorella thermoacetica , coupling with a carbon-based semiconductor, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ), to realize light-driven carbon fixation . The proposed biohybrid system displayed outstanding acetate productivity with a quantum yield of 2.66 ± 0.43 %. Non-targeted proteomic analysis indicated that the physiological activity of the bacteria was improved, coupling with the non-toxic material. We further proposed the mechanisms of energy generation, electron transfer and CO 2 fixation of the irradiated biohybrid system by proteomic and metabolomic characterization. With the photoelectron generated in g-C 3 N 4 under illumination, CO 2 is finally converted to acetate via the Wood-Ljungdahl pathway (WLP). Other associated pathways were also proved to be activated, providing extra energy or substrates for acetate production. The study reveals that the future focus of the development of biohybrid systems for light harvesting can be on the metal-free biocompatible material, which can activate the expression of the key enzymes involved in the electron transfer and carbon metabolism under light irradiation .

This study employed the hydrothermal method to dope Mn into Sn 3 O 4 , which was then combined with g-C 3 N 4 through calcination to prepare an II-type Mn-Sn 3 O 4 -x/CN composite photocatalyst. The impact of Mn-Sn 3 O 4 loading on the photocatalytic performance was discussed. The synthesized composite catalysts exhibited remarkable hydrogen production performance under visible light, with Mn-Sn 3 O 4 -10/CN demonstrating the highest performance. Characterization techniques confirmed the successful preparation of the catalysts, and the light absorption capacity, charge separation and transport efficiency of Mn-Sn 3 O 4 -10/CN are significantly improved compared to catalysts with other ratios. This study developed a Mn-Sn 3 O 4 -x/CN composite catalyst with high stability and good hydrogen production rate. It provides further directions for the research of g-C 3 N 4 -based composite catalysts.

The rapid and effective removal of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) from groundwater is challenging. In this paper, porous cyano group-rich g-C3N4catalysts were prepared by urea (U) and a KOH-assisted thermal polymerization strategy. The thickness, active sites, and pores of g-C3N4were successfully modulated by urea and KOH-assisted thermal polymerization. In addition, the charge separation efficiency of g-C3N4was effectively improved by the above methods. We combine the g-C3N4photocatalyst with peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to achieve the efficient degradation performance of ibuprofen. Meanwhile, we also explored the reaction mechanism of g-C3N4in the photocatalytically coupled persulfate system, which illustrated the active roles of singlet oxygen and holes in the system in degrading pollutants. Our work demonstrates that the photocatalytically coupled persulfate system is an advanced technology necessary for the deep treatment of PPCPs in groundwater and suggests a feasible strategy for catalyst modulation.

Developing advanced affinity adsorbents for immunoglobulin G (IgG) selective separation and purification is vital for clinical diagnosis and therapy. However, high-cost and low-specificity methods hinder high-purity IgG production. This work has fabricated nanoporous heterostructure microparticles by emulsion polymerization of styrene, divinylbenzene, and acrylic acid on the surface of sulfonated polystyrene particles. Following modification with nickel ions, the Ni2+-functionalized sulfonated poly(styrene-divinylbenzene)-poly(acrylic acid) (SPSDVB-PAA-Ni) exhibits dense nanoporous heterostructures and Ni2+-chelating sites, enabling electrostatic attraction and metal affinity interactions for the adsorption and separation of IgG. The SPSDVB-PAA-Ni affinity adsorbent demonstrates a high adsorption capacity of 192.7 mg·g–1 with rapid equilibration within 30 min, outperforming protein A/G adsorbents. Furthermore, the separation/purification of IgG from human serum samples is successfully achieved with a recovery of 73.7% and a purity of 83.7%. The study presents the SPSDVB-PAA-Ni polymer microparticles as promising adsorbents for selectively separating antibody drugs, suggesting their potential applications in clinical analysis.

Strippable film decontamination is critical for removing radioactive surface contamination during nuclear facility decommissioning and accident response. However, the conventional detergents perform poorly in film formation, freeze easily, and are hard to spray at low temperatures (below 0 °C). In this study, a novel ethyl cellulose-g-polyacrylate (EC-g-PA) detergent was successfully synthesized via benzoyl peroxide (BPO) initiated free-radical polymerization of ethyl cellulose (EC), methyl methacrylate (MMA), butyl acrylate (BA), ethyl methacrylate (EMA), and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate (2-EHA). The synthesized EC-g-PA was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The film-forming and rheological properties of EC-g-PA detergents at low temperatures were systematically investigated and the mechanical properties of the EC-g-PA film were tested. Moreover, the decontamination efficiency of the EC-g-PA detergent on various plates within the temperature range from −10 °C to 25 °C was also investigated. The results demonstrate that the EC-g-PA detergent exhibits excellent low-temperature fluidity (below 0 °C) and colloidal stability. Notably, it demonstrates rapid film formation and complete peelability within 12 h under subzero conditions. The contamination decontamination rate (CDR) exceeds 90% on ceramic tiles (CT), glass (G), stainless steel (SS), and marble (M), while achieving 78.30% on concrete (C) at 0 °C. These results demonstrate that the EC-g-PA detergent shows significant potential for application in nuclear facility decommissioning and accident response at low temperatures.

Novel composite material (g-C 3 N 4 @Ser-PMO) based on the combination of serine mesoporous organosilicon (Ser-PMO) and graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) was designed to purify water containing antibiotic under light illumination. Serine mesoporous organosilicon was first formed by using self-created organosilicon precursor with serine as organic silicon resource in the presence of g-C 3 N 4 under template via co-condensation method. The structural, morphological and optical properties of composite material were confirmed by series of characterizations including XRD, FTIR, N 2 adsorption-desorption, UV–vis DRS spectra, TEM and XPS spectra. These results displayed that ordered mesoporous channels were formed on the surface of graphitic carbon nitride to enhance optical properties. Meanwhile, Serine was first induced in mesoporous framework to provide active sites. During photo-degradation experiment of ofloxacin in water, composite material exhibited excellent degradation efficiency. 99 % of ofloxacin was nearly degraded under the light irradiation in 90 min, compared with pristine g-C 3 N 4 . Moreover, composite material showed good stability and recyclability after multiple cycle experiments, which provided an ideal way to alleviate the pollution problem from antibiotics in water.

Electrocatalytic CO2reduction driven by renewable electricity offers a sustainable approach to producing valuable chemicals, though it is often hindered by low activity and selectivity. CuO, an important transition metal oxide, exhibits unique advantages in photoelectrocatalysis due to its high intrinsic catalytic activity and ability to serve as an active site for CO2reduction. SiO2, a widely used substrate, facilitates Cu loading and increases the specific surface area of the catalyst. Meanwhile, g-C3N4provides excellent visible-light responsiveness and efficient charge carrier mobility. Together, CuO, SiO2, and g-C3N4are earth-abundant, low-cost, and chemically stable, making them ideal for solar-to-fuel applications. Here, a novel ternary heterojunction photocatalyst was constructed using SiO2, CuO, and g-C3N4. The heterostructure significantly improves light-harvesting efficiency, promotes efficient charge separation and transport, and simultaneously mitigates photogenerated carrier recombination and catalyst corrosion. The resulting SiO2@CuO/g-C3N4catalyst demonstrates outstanding CO2conversion performance, achieving a CO yield of 17 mmolg−1h−1at 1.2 VRHEwith nearly 100% selectivity. Moreover, this work systematically investigates the electrocatalytic CO2reduction reaction (CO2RR) mechanism on Cu-based catalysts, offering insights into the formation of high-value multicarbon products and highlighting the potential of rational heterojunction design in enhancing solar-driven fuel production efficiency.

With the increasing demand for preservatives in industries such as food, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals, the environmental pollution associated with these compounds has attracted growing concern. Although preservatives are widely applied across diverse sectors, their environmental persistence and degradation behavior remain underexplored. In this study, a novel Z -scheme g-C 3 N 4 /Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 photocatalyst was synthesized, and two commonly used preservatives—potassium sorbate (PS) and methyl para-hydroxybenzoate (MPB)—were selected as model pollutants to systematically investigate the photocatalytic performance of the prepared composite. The results demonstrated that the g-C 3 N 4 /Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 heterostructure exhibited remarkable photocatalytic activity under UV light irradiation, achieving degradation efficiencies exceeding 98 % within 40 min. Furthermore, characterization tests and density functional theoretical (DFT) calculations jointly confirmed that the g-C 3 N 4 /Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 heterojunction follows a typical Z -scheme charge transfer mechanism. This Z-scheme configuration allows the photocatalyst to retain strong redox potentials, thereby improving its overall redox capability and photocatalytic efficiency. Meanwhile, Liquid Chromatograph Mass Spectrometer (LC-MS) analysis combined with toxicity assessment experiments proved the effectiveness and safety of g-C 3 N 4 /Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 in degrading preservatives. These findings offer a promising strategy for the design of high-performance Z -scheme heterojunction photocatalysts for the efficient degradation of environmental contaminants such as preservatives.
