The Cu 2 O/TiO 2 p-n heterojunction composite photoelectrodes were prepared by depositing Cu 2 O nanoparticles on the surface of TiO 2 nanotubes via anodic oxidation and constant current deposition. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) analyses showed that Cu 2 O nanoparticles not only deposited on the surface of TiO 2 nanotube array, but also on the wall of TiO 2 nanotubes. The Cu 2 O deposition amount could be adjusted by changing the deposition time. The photoelectrochemical cathodic protection (PECCP) performance of the prepared photoelectrodes for 316L stainless steel (SS) was tested under visible light. The constant current deposition time had a significant effect on the PECCP performance of Cu 2 O/TiO 2 -X photoelectrodes and Cu 2 O/TiO 2 -20 had the best PECCP performance for the coupled 316L SS. This was attributed to the appropriate amount and thickness of Cu 2 O to form p-n heterojunctions with TiO 2 , in which separation of the photogenerated carriers was accelerated and transfer of the photogenerated electrons to 316L SS for PECCP was facilitated.

Materials with reversible optical properties under light irradiation have great potential application in various optoelectronic fields. Particularly, photochromic materials have received extensive attention in many fields. Herein, a novel composite photochromic fabric was fabricated via Layer-by-Layer self-assembling of phosphomolybdic acid (PMoA) and polyacrylamide (PAM). Based on the established electron transfer photochromic system, the dynamic manipulation of photochromic behavior of the cotton fabric was achieved with outstanding fine high-resolution image under the visible light irradiation. The prepared fabric can change from colorless to blue rapidly (within 5 min) under UV light and maintain excellent reusability photochromic performance after more than 20 reversible color changing cycles, implying its great potential applications in the field of intelligent devices and UV detection in sunlight. Moreover, we constructed fabric weaving and developed a Quick Response (QR) code security identification to prove the practical application of the prepared photochromic fabric in the fields of wearable, optical information storage and information security encryption.

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanomaterials have attracted much interest in life science and biological fields because of their excellent photocatalytic activity and good biocompatibility. However, owing to its wide band gap, photocatalysis of TiO2 can be only triggered by UV light. The limited transparent depth of UV light and the generated reactive oxygen species (ROSs) cause inflammation response of skin tissue, thus posing two major challenges in the photocatalytic application of TiO2-based materials in drug delivery and other biotechnology fields. Here, we propose an upconversion-related strategy to enable the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 nanotubes in near-infrared light and apply the system as a controllable drug delivery platform. More importantly, the ROS-induced cytotoxicity and the preleaching of payloads are significantly reduced on the as-proposed amphiphilic TiO2 nanotubes. The hydrophobic monolayers are served as a “cap” to provide protection for ROS-induced inflammation and long-term storability. This amphiphilic drug delivery system broadens the potential applications of TiO2-based nanomaterials in biomedicine.

The synthesis of high-value bioproducts has attracted immense attention in the scientific and industrial fields due to its health and economic benefits. Such bioactive compounds are typically manufactured by either synthetic approaches from petrochemical sources or biogenetic pathways existing in living organisms. Herein, we report a hybrid bioinorganic light-driven cell factory by integrating microalgae Chlorella zofingiensis with efficient light-harvesting gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and demonstrate the enhanced photosynthesis of natural bioproducts (i.e., carotenoids) for the first time. Our results show that smaller AuNPs (5 nm) can be internalized by C. zofingiensis and increase the production of carotenoids to 10.7 ± 1.2 mg/L, 42.7% higher than the native microalgae. We confirm that AuNPs can significantly improve the relative electron transport rate in photosystem II and reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels in microalgae, thus elevating the overall photosynthesis toward carotenoids. This rationally designed biohybrid system provides a promising alternative to produce high-value bioproducts of interest.

Aerogels hold great promise as a lightweight replacement in materials fields. Dynamic fluorochromic aerogels that possess reversible stimuli responsiveness have been particularly attractive recently for new design opportunities in practical solid-state lighting and wide applications in advanced sensors/probe. In this study, we report a reversibly multiresponsive white-light-emitting (WLE) aerogel prepared with codoped lanthanide, thymidine, and carbon dots. By precisely modulating the stoichiometric ratio of lanthanide complexes and carbon dots, broad-spectrum output from purple to red is obtained, including pure white light (CIE (0.33, 0.32)). The freeze-drying process contributes to the elimination of hydration between water molecules and lanthanide ions, further preventing the quenching of lanthanide luminescence and preserving the high quantum yield (47.4%) of our aerogel. Moreover, the dynamic coordination bond between lanthanide (europium and terbium) and thymidine endows the aerogel with reversible responsiveness upon five different stimuli, including halide anions, metal ions, pH, temperature, and humidity. We envision that our WLE aerogel has considerable potential for use in various fields such as display devices, advanced sensors, and environmentally friendly probes where multiresponsiveness is required.

Microfluidic generated double-emulsion drops(DEDs) with multiple-core are excellent containers for micro-reactions, which can encapsulate kinds of reagents and mix them by core-coalescence. Scaled continuous reactions require controlled coalescence of inner droplets with high efficiency and throughput. Here, we present a non-contact strategy to continuously trigger core-coalescence of DEDs by near-infrared(NIR) light in continuous flow. Under the irradiation of NIR light, the inner core droplets containing prussian blue(PB) rapidly heat up and cavitate, due to the photothermal property of PB. It results that interfacial equilibrium between two inner cores is broken by interface perturbation due to cavitation. The performance of core-coalescence in DEDs is investigated at different PB concentrations, flow rates, and light intensities. Continuous core-coalescence efficiency up to 98 % is obtained in the experiments. We demonstrated that the NIR light-triggered core-coalescence of DEDs provides distinctly microfluidic microreactor for synthesis of copper metalorganic framework (MOF). Moreover, dynamical two-step core-coalescence in the DED with triple-core is conducted under NIR irradiation. The presented technology is amenable to trigger micro-reactions for a wide range of applications such as laboratory-on-a-chip settings, applied chemistry and biomedical engineering.

Series of Bi 2 MoO 6 /NiAl-LDH hetero-junction photocatalysts were synthesized by a two-step hydrothermal method with a self-assembled process. It indicated that the in-situ intercalated NiAl-LDH showed a tight contact with Bi 2 MoO 6 layers and thus exhibited the rapid transfer of photogenerated electrons on the interface. The photocatalytic performance was evaluated by the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) under visible light irradiation. The resulted Bi 2 MoO 6 /NiAl-LDH sample showed a higher visible-light photocatalytic activity for the degradation of RhB than any single component. The optimal LDH content in Bi 2 MoO 6 /NiAl-LDH is 15% with the degradation efficiency for more than 90% during 60 min. The excessive amount of NiAl-LDH in Bi 2 MoO 6 /NiAl-LDH could reduce the light absorption efficiency of Bi 2 MoO 6 and thus affected the generation of photoinduced electron–hole pairs. The enhanced photocatalytic activity and stability of Bi 2 MoO 6 /NiAl-LDH was attributed to the synergistic effects of the introduction of narrow band-gap NiAl-LDH and the construction of layered hetero-junction. Our synthetic method of self-assembly sheets has certain guided significance for the synthesis and application of other photocatalysts.

The current strategy of co-delivering copper ions and disulfiram (DSF) to generate cytotoxic CuET faces limitations in achieving rapid and substantial CuET production, specifically in tumor lesions. To overcome this challenge, we introduce a novel burst-release cascade reactor composed of phase change materials (PCMs) encapsulating ultrasmall Cu 2-x Se nanoparticles (NPs) and DSF (DSF/Cu 2-x Se@PCM). Once triggered by second near-infrared (NIR-II) light irradiation, the reactor swiftly releases Cu 2-x Se NPs and DSF, enabling catalytic reactions that lead to the rapid and massive production of Cu 2-x Se-ET complexes, thereby achieving in situ chemotherapy. The mechanism of the burst reaction is due to the unique properties of ultrasmall Cu 2-x Se NPs, including their small size, multiple defects, and high surface activity. These characteristics allow DSF to be directly reduced and chelated on the surface defect sites of Cu 2-x Se, forming Cu 2-x Se-ET complexes without the need for copper ion release. Additionally, Cu 2-x Se-ET has demonstrated a similar (to CuET) anti-tumor activity through increased autophagy, but with even greater potency due to its unique two-dimensional-like structure. The light-triggered cascade of interlocking reactions, coupled with in situ explosive generation of tumor-suppressive substances mediated by the size and valence of Cu 2-x Se, presents a promising approach for the development of innovative nanoplatforms in the field of precise tumor chemotherapy.

Background Nanomedicine presents a promising alternative for cancer treatment owing to its outstanding features. However, the therapeutic outcome is still severely compromised by low tumor targeting, loading efficiency, and non-specific drug release. Methods Light-assisted “nano-neutrophils (NMPC-NPs)”, featuring high drug loading, self-amplified tumor targeting, and light-triggered specific drug release, were developed. NMPC-NPs were composed of neutrophil membrane-camouflaged PLGA nanoparticles (NPs) loaded with a hypoxia-responsive, quinone-modified PTX dimeric prodrug (hQ-PTX2) and photosensitizer (Ce6).Results hQ-PTX2 significantly enhanced the drug loading of NPs by preventing intermolecular π–π interactions, and neutrophil membrane coating imparted the biological characteristics of neutrophils to NMPC-NPs, thus improving the stability and inflammation-targeting ability of NMPC-NPs. Under light irradiation, extensive NMPC-NPs were recruited to tumor sites based on photodynamic therapy (PDT)-amplified intratumoral inflammatory signals for targeted drug delivery to inflammatory tumors. Besides, PDT could effectively eliminate tumor cells via reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, while the PDT-aggravated hypoxic environment accelerated hQ-PTX2 degradation to realize the specific release of PTX, thus synergistically combining chemotherapy and PDT to suppress tumor growth and metastasis with minimal adverse effects. Conclusion This nanoplatform provides a prospective and effective avenue toward enhanced tumor-targeted delivery and synergistic cancer therapy.

Bacterial wound infections pose a significant challenge for both patients and healthcare providers. To effectively treat bacterial wound infections, it is critical to develop functional wound dressings that can eradicate bacteria and promote wound healing. Herein, we report a facile and eco-friendly route for preparing a near-infrared (NIR) light-responsive bifunctional botanicals nanofibrous membrane as a wound dressing for the synergistic treatment of bacterial wound infections. The as-prepared nanofibrous membrane consisted of poly(vinyl alcohol) as a support matrix, tannic acid–Fe(III) nanoparticles as NIR laser-activated photothermal nanoagents, and berberine hydrochloride as the active botanicals. The bifunctional nanofibrous membrane exhibited high porosity, hydrophilicity, breathability, and biocompatibility, rendering it an optimal wound dressing. More importantly, the bifunctional nanofibrous membrane exhibited a synergistic sterilization performance under NIR laser irradiation to produce sufficient hyperthermia and on-demand release of botanicals. In vivo experiments demonstrated that the nanofibrous membrane could effectively kill bacteria in the early stages of infected wounds, promote collagen deposition, and accelerate wound healing. In summary, our bifunctional nanofibrous membrane presents immense potential for clinical applications in preventing bacterial infections and promoting skin repair.

Digital light processing (DLP) based 3D printing technology has the advantages of fast printing rate and high spatial resolution in the manufacture of tissue engineering scaffolds. However, the limited availability of printable materials for DLP technology, especially the lack of biodegradable elastomeric materials hinders the development of customized soft tissue scaffolds. Herein, liquid poly(4-methyl- ε -caprolactone) dialkynylate (PMCLDY) was prepared as a DLP printable ink based on efficient thiol-yne photocrosslinking. With the aid of photorheology and in situ FT-IR and tensile tests, an ink formulation for DLP printing was optimized as the P50 ink (PMCLDY to diluent PEGDY mass ratio of 1), which possessed fast cure rates (<15 s), low viscosity (<2 Pa·s), moderate mechanical properties (failure strain > 40 %) and maximum toughness (0.153 MJ·m −3 ). A commercial DLP printer equipped with the P50 ink realized 3D scaffolds models with microstructure and macroscopic shape precisely. It was demonstrated that the 3D printed scaffold with biodegradability could withstand dynamic compression cycles. Furthermore, the cytocompatibility experiments showed that the scaffold could effectively support the growth and proliferation of rat bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs). These results demonstrate that the P50 ink is a promising material for manufacturing elastic scaffolds by DLP printing for tissue engineering applications.
