In situ reconstruction of defect-engineered bimetallic (DA)Ni/Mo–MOFs@TiO2 generates an anion-protected active hydroxides via: Towards corrosion-resistant seawater photoelectrolysis for hydrogen production

Yue Li,Peihua Li,Rufeng Tian,Xingzi Bian,Jian Wang,Rui Li,Wanggang Zhang,Jiancheng Wang,Yiming Liu

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) seawater splitting offers a sustainable route for hydrogen production; however, it is challenged by the corrosion and sluggish kinetics of photoanodes in chloride-rich electrolytes. To overcome this, we developed a bimetallic metal-organic framework (MOFs) structure with oxygen vacancies (O V ) on TiO 2 nanorods, denoted as (DA)Ni/Mo–MOFs@TiO 2 . This photoanode achieved a high photocurrent density of 2.21 mA·cm −2 and H 2 production rate of 36.07 μmol·cm −2 ·h −1 in real seawater. Notably, it undergoes in situ reconstruction during the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), forming catalytically active Ov–NiOOH accompanied by a protective MoO 4 2− layer. In situ Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) directly revealed the reconstruction process and interfacial adsorption. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further demonstrated that the reconstructed surface selectively stabilized *OH intermediates (E ad  = −4.26 eV), thereby enhancing the OER selectivity and corrosion resistance. This system demonstrated exceptional stability, exhibiting minimal faradaic efficiency loss (1.2–2.3%) in high chloride ion environments (0.7–1 mol/L NaCl). This study provides a novel strategy for designing durable photoelectrodes via pre-catalyst reconstruction.

Ni-Mo bimetallic layered double hydroxide encapsulated ZIF-67 catalyst with nanoflower-like porous structure promotes the activation of calcium sulfite for the degradation of chloroquine phosphate

Yingying Xu,Xiangmei Meng,Tianhao Zou,Jianqiao Wang,Pengfei Xiao

Chloroquine phosphate (CQP) is a drug widely used in clinical anti malaria and treatment of novel coronavirus pneumonia. Meanwhile, it has persistence in water. This substance has become a new type of environmental pollution that requires urgent attention and effective remediation strategies. Therefore, in this study, nickel molybdenum layered double hydroxide (NixMoy-LDH) was coated on ZIF-67 through hydrothermal treatment and used as a catalyst to activate CaSO 3 for the degradation of CQP. Investigated the effects of catalyst ratio, initial pH, and coexisting substances in the system on the degradation of CQP. Under the optimal metal ratio synthesis conditions, NiMo4-LDH@ZIF-67/CaSO 3 achieved a 95.6% CQP degradation rate within 30 min, demonstrating excellent activity. Comprehensive characterization shows that the close interaction between ZIF-67 and NixMoy-LDH can improve the stability of the catalyst, accelerate the redox cycle of Ni ions, and enhance the activation of CaSO 3 . Quenching experiments, electron paramagnetic resonance, and competitive dynamics confirm that SO 4 •− , •OH and 1 O 2 , species contribute to the degradation process. By combining LC-MS and DFT calculations, the possible degradation pathways of CQP were analyzed, the main intermediates were identified, and the toxicity of the intermediates was evaluated. It is worth noting that after five cycles, the degradation rate of pollutants by the catalyst remained at 93%, proving that the catalyst has excellent stability. The catalyst has excellent reusability and effectiveness in various pollutants and different water bodies. This work emphasizes that the NiMo4-LDH@ZIF-67/CaSO 3 system is a promising pharmaceutical wastewater treatment technology.

Self-supported lignin-derived carbon coupling with Mo-doped NiO and NiCo alloy heterojunction stimulates lattice tensile strain and electron transfer for boosting ampere-level urea electrolysis

Yunpeng Wang,Liancen Li,Hui Yu,Zehan Xie,Rongcheng Mo,Minsheng Lu,Changzhou Chen,Douyong Min,Jinli Chen,Guangfu Qian

Developing highly active lignin carbon-based electrocatalysts for urea electrolysis is critical but remains a considerable challenge. Herein, a self-supported lignin-derived carbon coupling with Mo-doped NiO and NiCo alloy heterojunction (Mo-NiO@NiCo/C) has suitable lattice tensile strain and rapid electron transfer , thereby achieving high catalytic performance for urea electrolysis under large current density . The operando electrochemical impedance results demonstrate that Mo-NiO@NiCo/C undergoes an indirect oxidation step during the urea oxidation reaction (UOR) and follows the Volmer-Heyrovsky mechanism during the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Consequently, among all prepared catalysts, Mo-NiO@NiCo/C exhibits the best UOR ( E 10/500/1000  = 1.278/1.381/1.430 V) and HER ( E −10/−500/−1000  = −38/−262/−353 mV) activity in 1.0 M KOH with 0.5 M urea solution. In a UOR//HER electrolysis cell, Mo-NiO@NiCo/C can obtain the potential of 1.313 and 1.607 V at 10 and 1000 mA cm −2 . Meanwhile, benefiting from the self-supported lignin-derived mesoporous carbon structure , it can operate stably for 100 h at 1000 mA cm −2 . This work presents an efficient lignin-derived carbon-based catalyst for urea electrolysis under ampere-level current density and details a practicable method for improving the utilization rate of lignin-derived carbon.

Enhanced removal of P(V), Mo(VI) and W(VI) generated oxyanions using Fe-MOF as adsorbent from hydrometallurgical waste liquid: Exploring the influence of ionic polymerization

Wenjuan Wang,Yanfang Huang,Guihong Han,Bingbing Liu,Shengpeng Su,Yizhuang Wang,Yubin Xue

Environmentally hazardous P(V), Mo(VI) and W(VI) generated oxyanions exist widely in the waste liquid of nonferrous hydrometallurgy . In this work, Fe-MOF material was simply prepared via solvothermal synthesis and then used as an adsorbent to remove P(V), Mo(VI) and W(VI) oxyanions from hydrometallurgical waste liquid . Several important parameters, including solution pH, oxyanion concentration, contact time, adsorbent amount, temperature and coexistent heavy metal ions , were systematically investigated. The results demonstrate that adsorption process was almost pH-independent over a broad range of pH 3.0–10.0. The adsorption efficiency was strongly associated with the chemical species of oxyanions. The higher polymerisation degree of oxyanions was more favourable for removal efficiency. Additionally, the maximum removal efficiencies for P(V), Mo(VI) and W(VI) oxyanions under optimum conditions were approximately 100%. Furthermore, the adsorption kinetics and isotherms of oxyanions on the adsorbent separately belonged to the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir isotherm models. XPS analysis revealed that inner-sphere complexation played a dominant role in the adsorption removal process. Fe-MOFs with pH-independent properties, abundant binding sites and high stability are prospective adsorbents for treating waste liquids in the hydrometallurgical industry.

Development of phosphoryl-functionalized algal-PEI beads for the sorption of Nd(III) and Mo(VI) from aqueous solutions – Application for rare earth recovery from acid leachates

Yuezhou Wei,Khalid A.M. Salih,Kamal Rabie,Khalid Z. Elwakeel,Yasser E. Zayed,Mohammed F. Hamza,Eric Guibal

Alginate-PEI beads are functionalized by phosphorylation and applied for the sorption of Nd(III) and Mo(VI). The successful grafting of phosphoryl groups (as tributyl phosphate derivative) is characterized by FTIR and XPS analysis, elemental analysis, titration (pH PZC ), TGA, BET and SEM-EDX analyses. The multi-functional characteristics of the sorbent (i.e., carboxylic, hydroxyl, amine and phosphate groups) contribute in the binding of metal ions having different physicochemical behaviors. The sorption of Nd(III) is strongly increased by phosphorylation, while for Mo(VI) the enhancement is rather limited. Optimum sorption occurs at pH 3–4: maximum sorption capacity reaches up to 1.46 mmol Nd(III) g −1 and 2.09 mmol Mo(VI) g −1 ; sorption isotherms are fitted by the Langmuir equation. The equilibrium is reached within 30–40 min and the kinetic profiles are simulated by the pseudo-first order rate equation. The coefficients of the effective diffusivity are close to the self-diffusivity of Nd(III) and Mo(VI) in water; as a confirmation of the limited impact of resistance to intraparticle diffusion in the kinetic control. The sorbent is selective for Nd(III) over Mo(VI) and other alkali-earth or base metals (at pH close to 2.5–3). Metals can be readily desorbed using 0.2 M HCl/0.5 M CaCl 2 as the eluent. The loss in sorption does not exceed 5% at the fifth cycle, while desorption remains complete. A series of treatments (including acidic leachate, cementation, precipitation, sorption and elution) is successfully applied for the recovery of rare earths from Egyptian ore; with enrichment in the oxalate precipitate of Nd(III), Gd(III), Sm(III) and Eu(III).

Significant impact of γ-Al2O3 facet structure on the character and performance of surface Co-Mo sulfides for CO removal in H2 fuel via water gas shift

Pengcheng Wang,Jun Liu,Peiwen Xu,Xinzhen Feng,Weijie Ji

Three morphologically uniform γ-Al 2 O 3 crystallites [Al 2 O 3 hexagonal plates (Al 2 O 3 -HP), stacked hexagonal plates (Al 2 O 3 -SHP) and rods (Al 2 O 3 -R)] were controllably synthesized. The Co-Mo oxide precursor was loaded on these γ-Al 2 O 3 substrates via aqueous incipient wetness impregnation and transformed to the sulfides under 10% H 2 S/H 2 (v/v) atmosphere. The mainly exposed facet of Al 2 O 3 -HP and Al 2 O 3 -SHP was identified to be the (1   1   0) and (1   0   0)/(1   1   1), respectively; whereas a polycrystalline structure was observed over Al 2 O 3 -R. The original structural feature of oxide precursors, i.e., 2D polymeric/monomeric as well as 3D polymeric/MoO 3 species substantially varied over Al 2 O 3 -HP, Al 2 O 3 -SHP, and Al 2 O 3 -R, which in turn determines the effectiveness in sulfidation of surface oxide precursors. The richness of MoS 2 /Co 9 S 8 /Co-Mo-S species, and less fraction of partially sulphurated CoMoO x S 2 as well as CoO x /SO x 2− entities were recognized over Al 2 O 3 -HP. Based on the areal activity at 250 °C, the sulfides-Al 2 O 3 (1   1   0) interface is approximately 6–13.8 times more active than the poly-crystalline or commercial γ-Al 2 O 3 supported sulfides for water gas shift (WGS) in a hydrogen-rich stream. The sulfides-Al 2 O 3 (1   1   0) interface also notably outperformed the sulfides-Al 2 O 3 (1   0   0)/(1   1   1) interfaces for the reaction.

Protein–metal ion networks coated carbon matrix as a precursor: to construct carbon-supported Mo-based catalysts with highly exposed active sites for hydrogenation of nitro compounds

Lizhen Lian,Guangji Zhang,Xiaojun Zhao,Jianhan Huang,Liqiang Wang,You-Nian Liu

Carbon-supported non-precious metal catalysts with highly exposed active sites have great potential for applications in the hydrogenation reduction of nitro compounds. Herein, a strategy for the preparation of carbon-supported Mo-based catalysts (Mo@C/MC) is proposed. Protein–Mo ion networks are first coated on the surface of microsphere carbons (MC). The coated MC employed as a precursor is then pyrolyzed to produce carbon-supported Mo-based catalysts. Notably, neither pore-forming agents nor post-treatment is required in the preparation of the catalyst. The active sites tend to disperse uniformly on the surface of the carbon matrix, facilitating the exposure of the active sites of the catalyst. The as-prepared catalyst Mo@C/MC shows high conversion (>99%) and selectivity (>98%) for the hydrogenation of nitro compounds under mild reaction conditions (100 °C, 5 bar H2).

Boosting the catalytic activity of Cu2O via forming composite with both Cu and metal oxides MO2 (M = Mo and W) by tuning its band structure and Lewis acidity

Yi Pei,Jie Li,Zhaoyang Wang,Wei Zhong,Chunxin Lu,Zhongquan Shen,Nianlong Qian,Xiaoming Liu

In this work, composite materials (Cu-Cu 2 O/MO 2 , M = Mo and W) and their thermally treated form were prepared and characterized by using a variety of spectroscopic techniques (XRD, SEM, HRTEM, XPS and UPS) and cyclic voltammetry. Their catalytic performance on aerobic oxidation of various alcohols under mild conditions was investigated with N-methylimidazole (NMI) and 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) as the co-catalysts. Of the materials, the thermally treated MoO 2 -based material exhibited the best performance and durability. Compared to Cu-Cu 2 O, the involvement of MO 2 significantly enhances the catalytic activity on the oxidation. Our results suggest that the presence of MO 2 not only raises the energy level of VBM of Cu 2 O which is beneficial to O 2 activation and generates internal electric field pointing to the catalytic center (Cu 2 O) which would accelerate the electron transfer from the substrate to the catalyst through forming heterojunction with both Cu and MO 2 , but also disperses the catalytic center. Further, the Lewis acidity of MO 2 with appropriate strength can bring the substrate closer to the catalytic center via adsorption. But appropriate acidity is essential as easy on–off adsorption is desired in the catalysis. Thermal treatment generates oxidation state VI species of stronger acidity which offsets the effect of the raised VBM energy level.

Study on the Development of High-Performance P-Mo-V Catalyst and the Influence of Aldehyde Impurities on Catalytic Performance in Selective Oxidation of Methacrolein to Methacrylic Acid

Baohe Wang,Honggang Dong,Liang Lu,Hongxia Liu,Zhaobang Zhang,Jing Zhu

A series of KxH1.1-xCu0.2Cs1(NH4)1.5PVMo11O40(KxCuCsNH4PVA) catalysts with differentxvalues were synthesized to catalyze the selective oxidation of methacrolein (MAL) to methacrylic acid (MAA). The effects of potassium (K) ions on both the structure and catalytic activity were studied in detail. The optimum K0.6CuCsNH4PVA exhibited a large surface area, more acid sites, and abundant active species (V4+/VO2+) in the secondary structure of the Keggin structure, consequently offering good catalytic performance. Furthermore, K ions increased the MAA selectivity at the expense of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide (together defined as COX). Additionally, several process parameters for MAL oxidation were evaluated in the processing experiments. The effects of aldehyde impurities (formaldehyde and propanal) on the catalytic performance were investigated. Possible detrimental effects (catalyst poisoning and structural damage) of aldehyde impurities were excluded. A light decrease in MAL conversion could be attributed to the competitive adsorption of aldehyde impurities and MAL on the catalyst. Hopefully, this work contributes to the design of stable and feasible catalysts for the industrial production of MAA.Keywords:potassium;methacrolein;formaldehyde;propanal;selective oxidation;methacrylic acid;catalytic performance

Regulating spin state of Fe(III) by the Mo single atom anchored in the (001) crystal face of α-Fe2O3 to achieve efficient electrocatalytic nitrate to synthesize ammonia

Zhenyu Yan,Wenyu Gao,Chenkai Zhong,Qiangqiang Jiao,Shujie Tian,Jia Liu

Ammonia (NH 3 ) plays an important role in agricultural production and is also an ideal zero-carbon energy source in sustainable hydrogen economy. Electrocatalytic nitrate (NO 3 - ) reduction reaction can simultaneously consume nitrogen pollutants in water during the synthesis of NH 3 , which is the most promising and gentle alternative process to the Haber-Bosch. However, due to the interference of hydrogen evolution reaction and high overpotential, the development of efficient directional ammonia conversion catalysts has become the key. In this study, Mo-Fe 2 O 3 material were fabricated by crystal face engineering and orbital manipulation strategies. The (001) face of α-Fe 2 O 3 with the best electrochemical performance was exposed by thermodynamic control, and the in-situ substitution of Mo single atoms for near-surface Fe atoms was further used to achieve excellent ammonia synthesis activity. NH 3 yield of 493.67   μg/h/mg cat and Faraday efficiency of 95.0% were achieved at -0.5   V vs. RHE (pH=7, 0.1   M PBS+500 ppm NO 3 - ). The mechanistic analysis showed that the highly electronegative Mo atoms induced strong interaction by Fe-O-Mo bond, which prompted Fe(III) to preferentially fill the lower t2g orbital and form a low-spin state. The weaker anti-bonding state enhances the interaction between Fe(III) and the coordinating O atoms in NO 3 - , thereby strengthening electron transfer. In summary, the targeted regulation of the crystal facet and electronic orbitals of catalysts presents a promising strategy for enhancing the conversion of NO 3 - to NH 3 .

Modulating the structure of O3-type NaNi1/3Fe1/3Mn1/3O2 for high-performance sodium-ion batteries via Na2MoO4 reactive wetting coating combined with Mo doping and interface reconstruction

Miaoyan Song,Lin Xu,Kemeng Wang,Guohu Chen,Zhaohong Tang,Kaiwen Zhou,Wenwei Wu,Xuehang Wu

O3-type NaNi 1/3 Fe 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 (NFM) is considered as a promising cathode material for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to its high theoretical energy density and low production cost. However, the applications of NFM are restricted owing to detrimental interfacial side reactions and phase evolution during cycling. Herein, a three-in-one modification strategy, including Na 2 MoO 4 coating, surface reconstruction from layered to spinel phase, and Mo 6+ doping, is proposed to design NFM. A uniform and tight Na 2 MoO 4 coating layer formed via reactive wetting mechanism can effectively inhibit the unfavorable side reactions between cathode and electrolyte. The formation of nanoscale spinel layer can anchor the interior layered structure, leading to a decrease in volume change during the sodiation/desodiation process. The incorporation of Mo 6+ with a high valence state and strong Mo O bonds into the O3 phase promotes the expansion of transition-metal layer spacing and enhances the structural stability. As a result, tri-modified NFM exhibits superior cycling stability with a capacity retention of 85.20 % after 300 cycles at 100 mA g −1 and rate performance with a discharge capacity of 56.9 mAh/g at 2000 mA g −1 , outperforming those of pristine NFM (61.76 % and 39.4 mAh/g). This synergistic modification approach provides a new avenue to improve the performance of layered-oxide cathode materials for SIBs.

Acid-free closed-loop valorization of alkaline fly ash: Dual roles of H2O2 in peroxo-mediated ionic reshaping for selective Mo recovery and synergistic value enhancement of sodium carbonate

Zhiyu Wang,Zhen Wang,Bingying Gao,Peijie Ye,Shenggang Ma,Linqiang Mao

Similar geometries caused difficulty in (MoO 4 ) 2− and (CO 3 ) 2− separation. • A target-reshaping separation strategy based on CDFT descriptors was proposed. • Aliquat 336 selectively recovers 99.81% Mo as [Mo(O 2 ) 4 ] 2− without acidification. • Alkaline raffinate is directly converted to SPC achieving acid free valorization. Fly ash from petroleum refining waste alkali liquor incineration represents a dual-component secondary resource rich in sodium carbonate and molybdates. Conventional solvent extraction or ion-exchange resin for Mo recovery were usually applied in acidic aqueous environment, and selective separation of Mo from this highly alkaline (pH > 10) solution of fly ash was heavily hindered by similar ionic radii and charge densities of MoO 4 2− and CO 3 2− . Herein, we report an acid-free Mo extraction strategy based on peroxo complexation induced ionic reshaping. By introducing H 2 O 2 into fly ash solution, MoO 4 2− is quantitatively converted into the bulky [Mo(O 2 ) 4 ] 2− complex, expanding the molecular volume to 140.20 Å 3 and elevating ionic softness to 0.31 eV −1 . Approximately 99.81% of Mo in solution was selectively extracted using extractant Aliquat 336, and yielded H 2 MoO 4 product with the purity of 99.65%. Moreover, Aliquat 336 exhibits the highest softness among the tested extractants, which results in a stronger affinity for the softened peroxo-reshaped Mo species. Conceptual density functional theory (CDFT) calculations and hard-soft acid-base analysis reveal that these geometric and electronic alterations dramatically enhance Mo orbital compatibility and binding energy (−5.725 eV) with extractant Aliquat 336. Subsequently, Mo depleted raffinate was subjected into the production of sodium percarbonate, and around 83.68% of sodium carbonate was recycled as sodium percarbonate (SPC) with total metallic impurities below 0.02%. Overall, the introduction of H 2 O 2 contributes to selective Mo recovery and simultaneous value enhancement of Na 2 CO 3 , and this method provides a sustainable strategy for the valorization of complex hazardous wastes.
