Tailored design of p-phenylenediamine functionalized graphene decorated with cobalt ferrite for microwave absorption

Tao Ma,Yu Cui,Li Liu,Hao Luan,Jianwen Ge,Pengfei Ju,Fandi Meng,Fuhui Wang

Structural design and componential optimization are two primary directions in the study of microwave absorbers. In this study, a novel cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4) decorated with p-phenylenediamine (PPD) functionalized graphene (PG/CoFe2O4) binary hybrid with unique hierarchical porous structure was synthesized by a two-step route. The chemical composition, morphology and electromagnetic parameters of the as-prepared sample were investigated successively. The porous CoFe2O4 microspheres with an average diameter of about 160 nm were uniformly anchored on rGO nanosheets. Owing to the uniquely hierarchical porous structure, synergistic effects of dielectric loss (conductive loss, interface and dipole polarization) and magnetic loss (eddy current loss, natural and exchange resonance), the as-prepared sample exhibited excellent microwave absorption (MA) performance. The maximum reflection loss (RLmax) could attain up to −53.3 dB, and the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) reached 6.6 GHz (11.4–18.0 GHz) at 2.40 mm, which completely covered the Ku band. These results showed that this functional material can be applied in the MA field.

In Situ Formation of CoMoS Interfaces for Selective Hydrodeoxygenation of p-Cresol to Toluene

Xiaoling Liu,Xiaoli Hou,Yijin Zhang,Hong Yuan,Xinlin Hong,Guoliang Liu

Catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of phenolics to aromatics is one of the most important reaction routes in bio-oil upgrading. Sulfided CoMo catalysts are good candidates for this reaction, but their activities are strongly associated with the number of exposed surface sites and Co–Mo synergy. Herein, we employ zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 as a cobalt precursor and template for inverse deposition of MoS2 ultrathin sheets inside the framework to form CoMoS interfaces by using a simple hydrothermal method. The size-confined MoS2 possesses a few-layered structure and abundant surface defects. It is found that in situ generation of a CoMoS active phase would take place to reach the best activity of our catalysts under the HDO reaction condition or by H2 prereduction treatment. With varying different Co–Mo molar ratios, the optimized CoMoS-0.18 catalyst exhibits the highest HDO activity, with a p-cresol conversion of 92.4% and a toluene selectivity of 95.5% at 250 °C. The high performance is ascribed to the formation of an accessible surface CoMoS phase after surface restructuring.

Hollow ni-p amorphous alloy nanospheres: An efficient catalyst for sugars hydrogenation to polyols

Yang Yong,Gu Huajun,Zhang Qingxiao,Zhang Fang,Li Hui

In this paper, hollow Ni − P nanospheres (NSs) are prepared through Ni electroless plating on the Au-activated silica NSs externally covered by aminopropyl moieties, followed by removing the silica template with sodium hydroxide. With various characterizations, the resulting hollow Ni − P NSs are identified to be amorphous alloy. During liquid-phase hydrogenation of sugars to sugar alcohols, the hollow Ni − P amorphous alloy NSs delivered much superior catalytic performances to the commercial Raney Ni catalyst, showing a good potential in practical applications. Of particular interest is the unique hollow chamber structure of the hollow Ni − P amorphous alloy NSs, which allows for improving catalytic activity and durability relative to those associated with the dense Ni − P amorphous alloy NSs. This work demonstrated that such hollow Ni materials with nanoporous chamber structure displayed advantages such as easy experimental handling and high accessibility for the reactants in liquid-phase reaction, more Ni active sites, as well as the existence of more electron-enriched inner surface, which is essential to provide highly efficient catalysts for some reactions.

Synthesis of rGO/p-Fe3O4@PANI three-phase nanomaterials and electromagnetic wave absorption properties

Haopeng Cai,Bo Cheng,Hongbo Xiao,Qinqin Wei

A novel rGO/p-Fe3O4@PANI three-phase nanomaterial was prepared by coating conductive polyaniline (PANI) on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and porous Fe3O4 (p-Fe3O4), which can increase the reflection interface of electromagnetic waves and extend the reflection path of electromagnetic waves propagating inside the material, and between them. Three kinds of rGO/p-Fe3O4@PANI samples were prepared. The mass percentage of PANI in the samples was established. The mass ratio of rGO to p-Fe3O4 was changed to ameliorate the impedance matching and attenuation constant. Compared with rGO/p-Fe3O4, rGO/p-Fe3O4@PANI exhibits excellent electromagnetic wave absorption performance. When the mass ratio of rGO to p-Fe3O4 in the 40 wt% three-phase material is 1:5 and the thickness is 2.5 mm, the minimum RL of rGO/p-Fe3O4@PANI is −41.38 dB at 9.75 GHz and the effective absorption bandwidth to electromagnetic wave reaches 3.08 GHz (from 8.40 to 11.48 GHz), indicating that is a potentially attractive candidate for high efficiency electromagnetic wave absorbers. The combination of the conductive polymer, porous magnetic nanoparticles and rGO improves the impedance matching condition to some extent, and effectively increases the attenuation constant of the material.

Abiotic reduction of p-chloronitrobenzene by sulfate green rust: influence factors, products and mechanism

Ying Han,Junkai Huang,Hongyuan Liu,Yue Wu,Zhao Wu,Kemin Zhang,Qingjie Lu

The reduction of p-chloronitrobenzene (p-CNB) by sulfate green rust (GRSO4) was systematically studied. The results revealed that GRSO4 has a good removal effect on p-CNB. The removal efficiencies of p-CNB by GRSO4 improved with the increase of the pH value. The removal efficiencies in the presence of ions were better than that of GRSO4 alone, while natural organic matter (NOM) could adsorb p-CNB, which competed with GRSO4. The reductions of p-CNB by GRSO4 under different conditions followed pseudo-first-order reaction kinetics except for the reactions in the presence of NOM. p-CNB was converted into p-chloroaniline (p-CAN), which produced p-nitrosochlorobenzene and p-chlorophenylhydroxylamine as the intermediate products. The results of the X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed GRSO4 was gradually transformed into goethite. Fe(II) in the GRSO4 structure was the main electron donor involved in the reaction.

Recovery of o-toluidine and p-toluidine from wastewater by silicon rubber membrane extraction

Chao Zhu,Zarak Mahmood,Abdul Saboor Arshad,Jia Liu,Hongrui Ma

Wastewater treatment has become a major global issue due of undegradable pollutants. As toxic water pollutants , namely o-toluidine and p-toluidine are difficult to treat, this study uses the silicon rubber technology to treat them. A pair of modules having single tabular nonporous silicon rubber tube and HCl stripping solution were set up to extract o-toluidine and p-toluidine from high-saline wastewater. Reaction quotient ( Q C ) was calculated after every 12 h intervals to evaluate the equilibrium reaction. The effect of concentration, pH, temperature, ionic strength, and flow rate on the permeability (P) and removal efficiency ( η ) were investigated to illustrate the process parameters and mechanisms of recovery of both elements from wastewater. The results showed that the recovery efficiency was more than 96% with concentration of 2–10g/L. When pH of the extraction solution was 2 or less, the pollutant permeability efficiency was nearly 95%. Moreover, when the salting strength was over 10%, the recovery efficiency increased quickly to some extent. Permeability, which mainly influenced by membrane resistance and desorption rate, initially increased and then decreased when the water flow increased from 2 and 20 mL/min. Aging of silicon rubber tube was also studied with respect to salinity , temperature, and acidity. Acidity and temperature was found to have a significant effect on the tube, permeability increased with an increase in aging, and aging had a minor effect on the elastic properties of the silicon rubber tube. Absorption and diffusion of water in silicon rubber tubes decreased when salinity increased more than 10%, which increased separation of p-toluidine and water. Due to this, there is no need of desalination before membrane extraction in treatment of p-toluidine wastewater with high saline. Thus, this study demonstrates that membrane extraction is a highly energy-efficient process for the effective recovery of o-toluidine and p-toluidine from wastewater with high salinity.

Luminescence and structure regulation of graphitic carbon nitride by electron rich P ions doping

Ying Tian,Wenhua Tang,Hui Xiong,Tanghan Chen,Bingpeng Li,Xufeng Jing,Junjie Zhang,Shiqing Xu

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) modified with electron rich P ions was synthesized by directly heating a mixture of melamine and diammonium hydrogenphosphate with various doping concentration. The effect of the doping ion and its concentration on the morphology, structural and optical properties of the samples were investigated in detail. With the doping concentration increasing, a relative red shift and broadening was observed in the luminescence spectra of the doped g-C 3 N 4 . Based on a series of structural characterization, it is found that P ions replace part of the C-lattice in the g-C 3 N 4 network and form some P–N bonds. The P–N bonds affect the morphology and electronic structure of g-C 3 N 4 . Thus, the changes of luminescence properties could be mainly attributed to the doping-induced electronic redistribution.

Lignin-based magnetic activated carbon for p-arsanilic acid removal: Applications and absorption mechanisms

Qiong Wu,Xiaoxia Ye,Yuancai Lv,Ruihan Pei,Minya Wu,Minghua Liu

It is crucial for water environment security to remove its p -arsanilic acid ( p -ASA) efficiently. Namely, removing p -arsanilic acid from aqueous media through magnetic separation, has become a novel method of removing toxic pollutants from water. Batch adsorption experiments demonstrated a higher adsorption of lignin-based magnetic activated carbon (201.64 mg g −1 ) toward p -ASA. In addition, LMAC nanoparticles exhibited typical magnetism (35.63 emu g −1 of saturation magnetization) and could be easily separated from the aqueous solution. Meanwhile, the endothermic adsorption of p -ASA over LMAC could spontaneously proceed and be well described by the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order model as well as the intra-particle diffusion model. Moreover, the mechanisms during p -ASA adsorption over LMAC included the electrostatic attraction, surface complexation, π-π stacking and hydrogen bonding interaction. Importantly, lignin-based magnetic activated carbon has high absorbability and preferable reusability in real water samples. Consequently, this paper provides insights into preparation of the lignin-based magnetic activated carbon may be potential adsorbents for the remediation of organoarsenic compounds.

Catalytic fast pyrolysis of biomass with Ni-P-MCM-41 to selectively produce levoglucosenone

Kai Li,Bo Wang,Dana Bolatibieke,Dong-Hong Nan,Zhen-Xi Zhang,Min-Shu Cui,Qiang Lu

Levoglucosenone (LGO) is a valuable chiral synthon and can be produced from pyrolysis of cellulose and biomass. In the present study, Ni-P-MCM-41 catalysts with various P-to-Ni ratios were prepared and employed for selective production of LGO from biomass. Both analytical pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) and lab-scale experiments were conducted to explore the effects of several factors on the formation of LGO, including P-to-Ni ratio in Ni-P-MCM-41, catalyst/sample ratio and pyrolysis temperature. The results revealed that all the Ni-P-MCM-41 catalysts, especially the one with a P-to-Ni ratio of 5, exhibited excellent catalytic capability and selectivity for LGO production. For Py-GC/MS, the maximal LGO yields of 27.34 wt% and 14.30 wt% were achieved from cellulose and pine at 350 °C with catalyst/cellulose ratio of 3 and catalyst/pine ratio of 2, respectively. While in lab-scale experiments, the highest LGO yields from cellulose and pine were 21.37 wt% and 10.71 wt%, with the corresponding selectivity of 78.31% and 53.75%, respectively. The Ni-P-MCM-41 catalyst possessed much better catalytic efficiency on the LGO production than previously reported catalysts, including H 2 SO 4 , H 3 PO 4 , solid superacid, solid phosphoric acid and activated carbon.

Influences and the Mechanism of Additives on Intensifying Nucleation and Growth of p-Methylacetanilide

Hao Wu,Jingkang Wang,Qi Liu,Shuyi Zong,Beiqian Tian,Xin Huang,Ting Wang,Qiuxiang Yin,Hongxun Hao

Effectively manipulating crystal nucleation and growth is an essential issue for controlling the crystal morphology. In this work, the effect of additives on promoting crystal nucleation and growth was investigated from both thermodynamic and kinetic perspectives by using p-methylacetanilide as the model compound. Two additives with amide-terminal and halogen-terminal were selected, and it was found that they can promote the nucleation and crystal growth of p-methylacetanilide. It was found that the existence of 4-bromoacetanilide or 4-chloroacetanilide could decrease the solubility and the interfacial energy of p-methylacetanilide in ethanol, thus leading to an easier nucleation process. Furthermore, by measuring the growth rates of the (1 1 0) and (0 1̅ 1) faces of p-methylacetanilide in the absence and presence of additives, it was found that the raised supersaturation was not the only factor for crystal growth intensification. Molecular simulations revealed that the promotion effect was because the amide-terminal of additives bring the halogen-terminal to the proximity of the p-methylacetanilide surface and disrupt the absorbed ethanol layer, thus eliminating the negative influence of solvent on the surface diffusion of p-methylacetanilide.

Electrochemiluminescence resonance energy transfer immunoassay for alkaline phosphatase using p-nitrophenyl phosphate as substrate

Wenjing Qi,Yuling Fu,Maoyu Zhao,Hongkun He,Xue Tian,Lianzhe Hu,Yan Zhang

A sensitive electrochemiluminescent immunoassay for alkaline phosphatase (ALP) using p-nitrophenyl phosphate (PNPP) as substrate based on the electrochemiluminescence resonance energy transfer (ECRET) is developed. Luminol-doped silica nanoparticles (luminol-SiNPs) are prepared by water/oil (W/O) microemulsion method. PNPP convertes to p-nitrophenol (PNP) in the presence of ALP, which results in the absorption peak shifting from 360 nm to 450 nm. Herein the spectral overlap between absorption spectrum of PNP and electrochemiluminescence (ECL) spectrum of luminol-SiNPs (425 nm) makes energy transfer occur from luminol-SiNPs to PNP. In the optimized conditions, a linear relationship was obtained using this ECRET method at the concentration of ALP from 5 to 50 U/L (r = 0.9905) and with the limit of detection (LOD) of 0.8 U/L. This ECRET method exhibits sufficient specificity for ALP over other enzymes such as horseradish peroxidase , trypsin and lysozyme.

Amorphous Fe–Ni–P–B–O Nanocages as Efficient Electrocatalysts for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Hao Ren,Xiaoli Sun,Chengfeng Du,Jin Zhao,Daobin Liu,Wei Fang,Sonal Kumar,Rodney Chua,Shize Meng,Pinit Kidkhunthod,Li Song,Shuiqing Li,Srinivasan Madhavi,Qingyu Yan

Electrocatalysts are one of the most important parts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) to overcome the sluggish kinetics. Herein, amorphous Fe–Ni–P–B–O (FNPBO) nanocages as efficient OER catalysts are synthesized by a simple low-cost and scalable method at room temperature. The samples are chemically stable, in clear contrast to reported unstable or even pyrophoric boride samples. The Fe/Ni ratio of the FNPBO nanocages can be continuously adjusted to optimize the OER catalytic performance. The FNPBO nanocages composed of multicomponent elements can weaken the metal–metal bonds, thus rearranging the electron density around the catalytic metal atom centers and reducing the energy barrier for intermediate formation. Hence the optimized FNPBO (Fe6.4Ni16.1P12.9B4.3O60.2) catalyst shows superior intrinsic electrocatalytic activity for OER. The low overpotential to afford the current density of 10 mA cm–2 (236 mV), the small Tafel slope (39 mV dec–1), and the high specific current density (26.44 mA cm–2) at a given overpotential of 300 mV make a sharp contrast to state-of-the-art RuO2 (327 mV, 136 mV dec–1, and 0.028 mA cm–2, respectively).
