Integrating solar-driven interfacial evaporation with peroxymonosulfate activation by BiFeO₃-decorated PVA-based aerogel for simultaneous seawater desalination and tetracycline degradation

Xiaowen Cui,Xin Wang,Tinghui Wu,Xiao Sun,Yicheng Wang,Ting Wang,Yutong Liu,Shengchen Wu,Boyu Liu,Yongqi Yang,Zhe Chen,Mengzhu Liu,Yongpeng Wang

A 3D BiFeO 3 /biomass carbon black/PVA aerogel was fabricated for integrated solar evaporation and PMS activation. • The optimized BCPA-3 achieved an evaporation rate of 3.15 kg m −2  h −1 under 1 sun and maintained stable desalination in 3.5 wt% saline water. • The BCPA/PMS system enabled tetracycline degradation with 65% removal and a rate constant of 0.02407 min −1 . • The coupling effect of porous structure, photothermal heating, and radical oxidation was elucidated for complex saline wastewater purification. Solar-driven interfacial evaporation represents a sustainable strategy for freshwater production. However, the simultaneous elimination of coexisting antibiotic pollutants remains a critical challenge. Herein, we report a robust, multifunctional composite aerogel (BCPA) fabricated via a freeze-casting strategy, integrating bismuth ferrite (BiFeO₃), waste green tea residue-derived biomass carbon black (CB), and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The optimized BCPA-3 features a hierarchical three-dimensional (3D) porous architecture that ensures rapid water transport (infiltration time: 7.0 s) and broadband solar absorption. Consequently, the evaporator achieves a high evaporation rate of 3.15 kg m −2  h −1 under 1 kW m −2 irradiation and maintains a rate above 2.6 kg m −2  h −1 in 3.5 wt% brine, demonstrating exceptional salt-rejection stability. The produced condensate meets WHO and EPA drinking water standards with major ion concentrations reduced to negligible levels. Beyond desalination, the BCPA-3 system exhibits superior catalytic activity in activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for tetracycline degradation, achieving 65% removal efficiency with a rate constant of 0.02407 min −1 . Mechanism investigations reveal that the degradation is dominated by a radical pathway involving SO₄· − , ·OH, and O₂· − species. Collectively, this work presents a novel material design paradigm that synergizes solar steam generation with advanced oxidation processes, offering an integrated solution for seawater desalination and antibiotic wastewater remediation. A multifunctional GO/BNN6/PVA/COL composite sponge dressing integrating negative pressure wound therapy, photothermal, and gas therapies for wound healing

Jiaqi Zhou,Jingjing Yu,Tianshuo Hu,Jingyi Li,Cuicui Ding,Lihui Chen,Min Zhang

COL and GO/BNN6 integrated into PVA matrix via low-temperature foaming • Sponge combines NPWT, photothermal therapy, and gas therapy functions. • It achieves excellent drainage capacity, wet resilience and photothermal conversion. • NIR-triggered NO release enables synergistic antibacterial effect (>96% inhibition). • In vivo results confirm accelerated wound closure and enhanced tissue regeneration. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) sponges are widely utilized as wound dressings, yet they face limitations in clinical practice, particularly in addressing bacterial infection. Herein, a multifunctional composite sponge dressing is developed by incorporating collagen (COL) and a graphene oxide (GO)/BNN6 (a nitric oxide (NO) donor) assembly into a PVA matrix. The resulting GO/BNN6/PVA/COL composite sponge exhibits a three-dimensional porous network, high porosity, excellent liquid absorption, and favorable shape retention. Benefiting from these features, the composite sponge demonstrates efficient negative pressure drainage performance in vitro, achieving a drainage flux of 3515.0 mL·s −1 ·m −2 at 16 kPa, indicating its potential applicability for negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT). Moreover, under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation, GO provides significant photothermal conversion, allowing the sponge to serve as a photothermal therapy (PTT) agent. The localized heat simultaneously triggers the controlled release of NO from BNN6, yielding a combined photothermal and NO-mediated antibacterial effect with inhibition rates exceeding 96% against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ). Notably, in vivo experiments demonstrate that the GO/BNN6/PVA/COL sponge under NIR irradiation effectively suppresses infection, accelerates wound closure, and promotes granulation tissue formation and skin regeneration. This work presents a versatile sponge dressing that combines the key functions required for NPWT, on-demand PTT, and gas-based antibacterial treatment, demonstrating promising potential for advanced wound management. Schiff Base functionalized CMC/PVA composites for efficient adsorption of Cu(II) and Zn(II): From molecular design to economic evaluation

Karim Youssef Nabat,Ali Raza Ayub,Ahmed E. Mansy,Tesfa Oluma Fufa,Niu Zhang,Xiyan Xu,Hansheng Li,Hui Li

Green CMC/PVA based Schiff base bio-composite material successfully Fabricated • CMC/PVA-LH35 composite achieved adsorption capacity of 532.15 mg/g for Cu(II) • CMC/PVA-LA35 composite achieved adsorption capacity of 516.49 mg/g for Zn(II) • High reusability after 6 cycles with low-cost adsorbents for desalination • DFT computational analysis to elucidate the structural and binding mechanism Metal contamination in water sources is a critical threat to human health and water ecosystems, which reduces the efficiency of water desalination. Therefore, the development of materials for metal removal is essential for water purification. In this study, two novel Schiff bases (LA35 and LH35) were immobilized in a carboxymethyl cellulose/polyvinyl alcohol (CMC/PVA) matrix via robust hydrogen bonding. The CMC/PVA-LA35 and CMC/PVA-LH35 composite adsorbents achieved a maximal adsorption of 474.38 mg/g and 532.15 mg/g for Cu(II) and 516.49 mg/g and 468.04 mg/g for Zn(II), respectively, at optimum conditions, pH 5, 318 K, and 300 mg/L. The data fit the Langmuir isotherm model, suggesting that adsorption occurred on a homogeneous mono-layer surface with uniform binding sites. Additionally, a thermodynamic analysis confirmed the reaction was both spontaneous and endothermic. After six cycles of adsorption/desorption, the CMC/PVA-LA35 and CMC/PVA-LH35 maintained outstanding reusability with efficiencies of 76.72% and 81.69% for Cu(II) and 71.33% and 67.32% for Zn(II), respectively. DFT calculations revealed effective metal-ligand interactions via charge transfer and reduced bandgap. These findings were consistent with the large experimental adsorption capacities and confirm the importance of chemisorption for Cu(II) and Zn(II) removal. These findings reveal that metal chelation strength and complexation control the adsorption process. The results of the cost-effectiveness analysis showed that the total cost of reusability was extremely low. This discovery unveils its potential use in water desalination, offering new bio-composites to decrease metal contamination and protect aquatic life. A room temperature synthesized SERS substrate of AgNPs/PVA hydrogel for highly sensitive detection of enrofloxacin using a portable Raman system

Qingli Xie,Xueyang Wang,Boxue Chang,Yinlan Ruan

Enrofloxacin (EnFX), an antibiotic widely used in animal husbandry, can accumulate in the food chain due to excessive or long-term residues, posing a potential threat to human health. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technology, with its advantages of high sensitivity and rapid label-free analysis, offers a new approach for antibiotic residue detection. However, SERS substrate preparation at high temperature, poor signal reproducibility, and dependence on Raman spectroscopy still limit its practical application. To address these issues, this study proposed a flexible SERS substrate preparation scheme based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The substrate is prepared by a room-temperature seed growth method, which is simple, highly reproducible, and can be combined with portable Raman devices for rapid and flexible on-site detection. Research showed that the AgNPs/PVA hydrogel substrate exhibited excellent sensitivity and signal consistency in the detection of enrofloxacin and Rhodamine 6G (R6G), with a relative standard deviation (RSD) as low as 6%, and can be stably stored in air for more than one month. This method combines low cost, high scalability, and excellent environmental adaptability, providing an efficient, economical, and sustainable solution for the portable detection of antibiotic residues.

The anti-swelling, freezing resistant and high strength PVA organohydrogel combined with multifunctional {Mo154} for sensitive and wide-range strain sensing

Jingyue Zhang,Xiaochun Gu,Fan Chang,Zongze Lv,Ning Ma,Xu Zhu,Xinyue Zhang

Maintaining the detection stability of flexible strain sensors in a cold environment presents a significant challenge due to the sharp reduction of mechanical properties under harsh conditions, potentially resulting in sensor failure. To address this problem, it is crucial to develop a conductive material with stable mechanical properties across both mild and low temperatures. Herein, based on the conductivity and photothermal conversion ability of {Mo 154 } clusters, it was blended with the binary solvents (DMSO and water) dissolved PVA to construct the functional Mo-PVA/DW organohydrogel. In the gel, {Mo 154 } also offered abundant crosslinking points with PVA to maintain the original state in the liquid condition and at a low temperature of −20 °C. Depending on the favorable conductivity of 1.15 × 10 -3 S/cm, the Mo-PVA/DW-based flexible sensor displayed fast and repeatable response of motion detection at both −20 and 20 °C. In addition, the good photothermal conversion capability of Mo-PVA/DW organohydrogel can also give assistance to the strain sensor in the cold environment through the sunlight irradiation, immensely expanding the potential application scenarios.

PVA-graphene coated Cu(OH)2@Cu foam intensive composite phase change materials for superior solar-thermal conversion and energy storage

Jianguo Duan,Xinshuai Yan,Kun Lei,Jianguo Cheng,Yaxiong Wang,Qingzong Su,Shimin Xu,Jianming Li,Qing Ma

The phase change materials (PCMs) are encapsulated into porous materials for collecting and storing heat energy has been widely used to overcome the intermittency of solar energy utilization. However, due to the inherent big pore structure and surface characteristics, metal porous materials are not ideal for PCM leakage-proof and slow photo-thermal response. To address these issues, A micro/nanostructured graphene-polyvinyl alcohol nanosheets/Cu(OH) 2 nanowire on a three-dimensional Cu foam (CF) to fill with PCM was designed and prepared. In the composite PCM, the polyvinyl alcohol/reduced graphene oxide (PRG) films coated on Cu(OH) 2 @Cu foam (CCF) provided a large number of active sites for the adsorption of modified paraffin wax (PWS). The prepared composite PCM has a stable structure and high thermal conductivity properties, meanwhile, the strong PRG films play a key role in enhancing leakage-proof and stability. The results show that the enthalpy value of PRG-CCF/PWS are 160.25 J·g −1 after 200 thermal cycles; which still maintains excellent cycle thermal reliability. In addition, under the simulated solar irradiation intensity is 120 mW·cm −2 , the heat storage rate and photo-thermal conversion efficiency of PRG-CCF/PWS are 1.37 J·s −1 and 90.25 %, respectively. It shows excellent photo-thermal response and uniform temperature distribution. This work provides an efficient, sustainable and affordable strategy for manufacturing high-performance composite PCM that can efficiently achieve solar energy utilization and energy management.

Guang Yang,Hongjuan Mo,Bingjie Liu,Yiwen Wu,Guiqin Liu,Yadong Hu,Xue Jiao,Kexin Guo,Xin Wei,Yaowei Fang,Mingxuan Pan,Liang Hao

Natural polymer hydrogels, such as pullulan-based hydrogels, offer significant advantages over synthetic materials due to their thermal stability, film-forming capacity, solubility, adhesiveness, and antioxidant properties. In this study, the strain Aureobasidium melanogenum TZ-FC3, which produces a high level of pullulan, was successfully isolated from the mangrove ecosystems of Guangdong Province, China. 66.01 ± 1.10 g/L pullulan without melanin was produced by the TZ-FC3 strain within 120 h at flask level. Pullulan fermented by A. melanogenum TZ-FC3 was added to enhance the hydrogen bond network within the pullulan/PVA/borax hydrogels (P-2, P-3 and P-4 hydrogels) to improve mechanical strength and crosslinking density of PVA/borax hydrogel (P-1 hydrogel). Compared to the P-1 hydrogel, the P-2 hydrogel exhibited a 65.4 % increase in tensile strain, a remarkable 694.03 % increase in tensile strength and improved the degree of internal crosslinking. Additionally, the pullulan/PVA/borax hydrogels demonstrated excellent self-healing properties, adhesion, injectability, and antibacterial activity. The preparation process of pullulan/PVA/borax hydrogels is straightforward and effective, suggesting broad industrial applicability and underscoring their potential as next-generation materials for advanced healthcare solutions.

A PVA/LiCl/PEO interpenetrating composite electrolyte with a three-dimensional dual-network for all-solid-state flexible aluminum–air batteries

Li Chen,Boqiao Li,Liangliang Zhu,Xiaobin Deng,Xueyan Sun,Yilun Liu,Chen Zhang,Wei Zhao,Xi Chen

Aluminum–air batteries are promising electronic power sources because of their low cost and high energy density. However, traditional aluminum–air batteries are greatly restricted from being used in the field of flexible electronics due to the rigid battery structure, and the irreversible corrosion of the anode by the alkaline electrolyte, which greatly reduces the battery life. To address these issues, a three-dimensional dual-network interpenetrating structure PVA/LiCl/PEO composite gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) is proposed. The gel polymer electrolyte exhibits good flexibility and high ionic conductivity (σ = 6.51 × 10−3 S cm−1) at room temperature. Meanwhile, benefiting from the high-performance GPE, an assembled aluminum–air coin cell shows a highest discharge voltage of 0.73 V and a peak power density (Pmax) of 3.31 mW cm−2. The Al specific capacity is as high as 735.2 mA h g−1. A flexible aluminum–air battery assembled using the GPE also performed stably in flat, bent, and folded states. This paper provides a cost-effective and feasible way to fabricate a composite gel polymer electrolyte with high performance for use in flexible aluminum–air batteries, suitable for a variety of energy-related devices.

Skin-friendly PVA/PDA/Tyr-PEAm composite hydrogel with long-term antibacterial and self-recovery ability for wearable strain/pressure sensor

Huan Li,Yingying Li,Yudan Wang,Lijia Liu,Hongxing Dong,Chunhong Zhang,Toshifumi Satoh

Flexible and self-healing conductive hydrogel, as a typical electronic skin with the function of transmitting sensory signals, has attracted remarkable attentions in the biomaterials field. However, the practical application of electronic skin has been severely limited owing to the potential bacterial infection threats. Here, in order to improve the antibacterial properties of electronic skin, a star-shaped polyetheramide (Tyr-PEAm) derived from L-tyrosine was synthesized and cross-linked into the hydrogel network. A compliant and self-healing conductive hydrogel (defined as PVA/PDA/Tyr-PEAm) was assembled from polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), polydopamine (PDA) and Tyr-PEAm. The hydrogel achieved a comprehensive performance of long-term antibacterial activity (the inhibition zones remained unchanged over 7 days), low hemolysis activity (hemolysis rate of 0.042 %), good conductivity and rapid self-healing ability (healing within 1 s). Therefore, the hydrogel could be used not only as a detection device to check normal skin, but also as the wound skin detection in real time. Furthermore, the good conductivity and rapid self-healing ability contributed to the hydrogel to detect various macro and micro movements of the human body, as well as to recycle as a new sensor. The PVA/PDA/Tyr-PEAm hydrogel that integrated intelligent signals and resisted bacterial infections exhibited broad application prospects in biomedical materials.

Production and Anti-Inflammatory Performance of PVA Hydrogels Loaded with Curcumin Encapsulated in Octenyl Succinic Anhydride Modified Schizophyllan as Wound Dressings

Lingyun Tu,Yifeng Fan,Yongfei Deng,Lu Hu,Huaiqing Sun,Bisheng Zheng,Dengjun Lu,Chaowan Guo,Lin Zhou

Amphiphilic polysaccharides can be used as wall materials and applied to encapsulate hydrophobic active chemicals; moreover, there is significant demand for novel medical high-molecular-weight materials with various functions. In order to prepare amphiphilic schizophyllan (SPG), octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA) was chosen to synthesize OSA-modified schizophyllan (OSSPG) using an esterified reaction. The modification of OSSPG was demonstrated through FT-IR and thermal analysis. Moreover, it was found that OSSPG has a better capacity for loading curcumin, and the loading amount was 20 μg/mg, which was 2.6 times higher than that of SPG. In addition, a hydrogel made up of PVA, borax, and C-OSSPG (OSSPG loaded with curcumin) was prepared by means of the one-pot method, based on the biological effects of curcumin and the immune-activating properties of SPG. The mechanical properties and biological activity of the hydrogel were investigated. The experimental results show that the dynamic cross-linking of PVA and borax provided the C-OSSPG/BP hydrogel dressing with exceptional self-healing properties, and it was discovered that the C-OSSPG content increased the hydrogel’s swelling and moisturizing properties. In fibroblast cell tests, the cells treated with hydrogel had survival rates of 80% or above. Furthermore, a hydrogel containing C-OSSPG could effectively promote cell migration. Due to the excellent anti-inflammatory properties of curcumin, the hydrogel also significantly reduces the generation of inflammatory factors, such as TNF-α and IL-6, and thus has a potential application as a wound dressing medicinal material. Keywords:schizophyllan;octenyl succinic anhydride;curcumin;PVA;hydrogel;wound-healing

Preparation of nickel@polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) conductive membranes to couple a novel electrocoagulation-membrane separation system for efficient oil-water separation

Ruonan Zhang,Yanchao Xu,Liguo Shen,Renjie Li,Hongjun Lin

Efficient separation of oil-in-water emulsion remains a decisive step for success of oily wastewater treatment . To achieve this goal, a novel strategy regarding combining membrane separation with in situ electrocoagulation based on sacrificial anodes and cathodic hydrogen evolution via conductive metalized fabric membrane was proposed. As a key component of this novel coupling system, nickel functionalized fabric membrane with high hydrophilicity and electrical conductivity (electrical resistance of ∼2 Ω cm −1 ) was successfully prepared via a low-cost and facile route, including steps of PVA (polyvinyl alcohol)/Ni coating and autocatalytic electroless Ni plating. The optimized conductive membranes exhibited high permeate flux (19.3 × 10 5  L m −2  h −1 ·bar −1 ), separation efficiencies (99.5%), and separation stability to separate oil/water mixtures during the gravity-driven filtration process. To achieve the ideal performance to separate oil-in-water emulsion, a coupled electrocoagulation-membrane separation system was constructed with Ni@PVA membrane and Al mesh as the cathode and anode, respectively. It was shown that the coupled electrocoagulation-membrane separation system could achieve 99.4% rejection with high flux of 12.0 × 10 3  L m −2  h −1 ·bar −1 for oil/water emulsion separation, under the current density of 8 mA cm −2 and 20 min electrolysis time. This study revealed that the proposed electrocoagulation-membrane separation system based on Ni@PVA membrane is a promising technique in oil/water separation.
