Selective adsorption of Pb(II) and Cr(VI) by surfactant-modified and unmodified zeolites is discussed in this paper. The influences of pH, ionic strength, temperature, and adsorption time on Cr(VI) and Pb(II) adsorption are studied, The characteristics of the surface and inner structures of zeolites before and after modification are analyzed through infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analysis, and zeta potential measurement. Results show that the characteristics of electric charge on the zeolite surface had changed after modification, which resulted in selective adsorption of Cr(VI) and Pb(II). Moreover, kinetic study reveals that adsorption by the different zeolites coincides with the Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order kinetic equation. The intraparticle diffusion equation proves that the Cr(VI) adsorption is mainly electrostatic, whereas Pb(II) adsorption proceeds via intrapore and electrostatic adsorption on the zeolite surface. This difference in mechanisms endows selectivity of metal ion adsorption by the modified zeolites. This study provides a reference on zeolite modification for use in various applications, such as wastewater treatment.

The modified walnut shell biochar (WBC) was prepared through zinc-iron bimetallic oxide modification (ZF@WBC) at 600 °C under oxygen-limited conditions in this study. Through adsorption experiments, characterization analyses, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the adsorption properties of ZF@WBC to Pb (II) were investigated and the mechanism underlying such adsorption was elucidated. Characterization results showed that the surface area (375.9709 m 2 /g) and total pore volume (0.205319 cm 3 /g) of ZF@WBC were significantly greater than those of walnut shell biochar. The maximum adsorption capacity of ZF@WBC for Pb (II) was found to be 104.26 mg/g, which is 2.57 times higher than that of WBC according to the adsorption experiments conducted. The observed adsorption behavior followed both the pseudo-second-order (PSO) kinetic model and Langmuir isothermal adsorption model, suggesting that chemisorption plays a major role in the absorption process. Based on SEM, XRD, XPS, FTIR characterizations along with DFT calculations performed in this study, it can be concluded that surface complexation, ion exchange, electrostatic attraction, physical absorption are among the main mechanisms responsible for absorption of Pb (II) by ZF@WBC. Furthermore, even in the presence of interfering ions at different concentrations, ZF@WBC exhibited a removal rate above 70% for Pb (II). Therefore, ZF@WBC has great potential as an effective absorbent for removing Pb (II) from wastewater, while also offering opportunities for biomass waste resource utilization.

A novel electrochemiluminescence (ECL) biosensor based on CdSe@CdS quantum dots (QDs) functionalized MoS2 modified electrode was developed for sensitive detection of Pb(II) using HRP-mimicking DNAzyme biocatalytic precipitation (BCP) for ECL signal quenching. Polycationic poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) and negatively charged QDs were adsorbed on the surface of MoS2, in sequence, to form the MoS2–QDs composites, which were employed as a matrix for the immobilization of the G-rich DNA strand, i.e., T30695. The MoS2–QDs were characterized by UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, energy dispersive spectrometry, transmission electron microscopy, and field emission scanning electron microscopy. CdSe@CdS QDs can produce an ECL signal using 0.1 M K2S2O8 as a co-reactant. T30695 can combine with Pb(II) ions to form a stable parallel G-quadruplex. The G-quadruplex can further combine with hemin to form DNAzyme, which can catalyze H2O2 and oxidize 4-chloro-1-naphthol (4-CN) to produce an insoluble precipitation of benzo-4-chlorohexadienone on the surface of the sensor. When the concentration of Pb(II) in the solution was increased, more of DNAzyme was generated and subsequently more 4-CN molecules were oxidized catalytically, leading to a decrease of the ECL signal. Using this quenching strategy, the ECL signal of the biosensor was linearly dependent on the logarithm of the Pb(II) concentration ranging from 1.0 × 10−15 to 1.0 × 10−11 M with a detection limit of 0.98 f M. The stability and selectivity of the sensor were also investigated. The sensor was applied in the determination of Pb(II) in the real water samples and satisfactory results were obtained.

Utilizing plant wastes to treat Pb(II)-polluted water bodies offers a sustainable solution, but concerns over adsorption ability and separation efficiency limit its application. This study investigates the preparation and application of three-dimensional macroporous network-structured modified wood flour (WTX and TZX) for efficient Pb(II) removal. The adsorbents were synthesized through xanthate modification of defatted (TZ) and non-defatted (WT) wood flour, followed by lyophilization to achieve a stable porous structure. The optimal preparation condition involved mixing 1.0 g of original wood flour with 2 mL of CS 2 in a strong base environment at 25 °C for 3 h. Both WTX and TZX exhibited similar three-dimensional structure and good solid-liquid separation performance. Pb(II) removal rates reached 61 % for WTX and 54 % for TZX within 45 min. The maximum adsorption capacities were 221.73 mg/L for WTX and 210.53 mg/g for TZX, significantly higher than untreated wood flour. Despite similar appearances and maximum Pb(II) removal abilities, the defatting pretreatment did not enhance mechanical properties or adsorption performance. Pb(II) immobilization occurred via electrostatic attraction, complexation and precipitation, with functional groups like –O–C (=S)–SNa, –OH, –NH 2 and –COOH playing key roles. An economic assessment highlighted the cost-effectiveness of the adsorbents, with an estimated treatment cost of 3.21 US$/ton of wastewater. The study underscores the potential of waste wood flour biomass as a sustainable, low-cost solution for heavy metal remediation.

Screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCE) functionalized with MXene-based three-dimensional nanomaterials are reported for rapid determination of creatinine. Ti 3 C 2 T X MXene with in situ reduced AuNPs (MXene@AuNP) were used as a coreactant accelerator for efficient immobilization of enzymes. Creatinine could be oxidized by chitosan-embedded creatinine amidohydrolase, creatine amidinohydrolase, or sarcosine oxidase to generate H 2 O 2 , which could be electrochemically detected enhanced by Prussian blue (PB). The enzyme@CS/PB/MXene@AuNP/SPCE detected creatinine within the range 0.03–4.0 mM, with a limit of detection of 0.01 mM, with an average recovery of 96.8–103.7%. This indicates that the proposed biosensor is capable of detecting creatinine in a short amount of time (4 min) within a ± 5% percentage error, in contrast with the standard clinical colorimetric method. With this approach, reproducible and stable electrochemical responses could be achieved for determination of creatinine in serum, urine, or saliva. These results demonstrated its potential for deployment in resource-limited settings for early diagnosis and tracking the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Graphical Abstract

MIL-101(Fe) has received more and more attention in wastewater treatment, and how to further improve its stability and sorption capacity has become a research focus. In this study, metal Mg was used to dope MIL-101(Fe) to construct Mg@MIL-101(Fe) with bimetallic sites, which was then mixed with NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti) to successfully fabricate Mg@MIL-101(Fe)/NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti) (MOM) bis-MIL composites. MOM not only contains a large number of sorption sites but also exhibits excellent stability and reusability, realizing efficient sorption of Pb(II) from aqueous solution. In addition, the sorption performance and mechanism of Pb(II) on MOM were investigated by the characterizations of SEM, BET, TG, XRD, FTIR and XPS, as well as the kinetic and thermodynamic analyses. The sorption of Pb(II) on MOM is in accordance with the Langmuir isothermal model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The maximum sorption capacity of Pb(II) on MOM derived from the Langmuir model fitting is 320.941 mg·g −1 . The sorption of Pb(II) on MOM is strongly affected by pH, but not by ionic strength, which indicates that MOM has good resistance to salt interferences. The strong complexation of carboxyl, hydroxyl and amino functional groups with Pb(II) is the main sorption mechanism of Pb(II) on MOM, and electrostatic interaction and ion exchange also contribute to the sorption. In conclusion, MOM has strong practical application prospects in the treatment of Pb(II)-containing wastewater.

The available heavy metals in soil samples can cause the direct toxicity on ecosystems, plants, and human health. Traditional chemical extraction and recombinant bacterial methods for the available heavy metals assay often suffer from inaccuracy and poor specificity. In this work, we construct half adder and half subtractor molecular logic gates with molecular-level biocomputation capabilities for the intelligent sensing of the available lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd). The available Pb and Cd can cleave DNAzyme sequences to release the trigger DNA , which can activate the hairpin probe assembly in the logic system. This multifunctional logic system can not only achieve the intelligent recognition of the available Pb and Cd according to the truth tables, but also can realize the simultaneous quantification with high sensitivity, with the detection limits of 2.8 pM and 25.6 pM, respectively. The logic biosensor is robust and has been applied to determination of the available Pb and Cd in soil samples with good accuracy and reliability. The relative error (Re) between the logic biosensor and the DTPA + ICP-MS method was from −8.1 % to 7.9 %. With the advantages of programmability, scalability, and multicomputing capacity, the molecular logic system can provide a simple, rapid, and smart method for intelligent monitoring of the available Pb and Cd in environmental samples.

Corn stalk was used as the initial material to prepare a corn stalk matrix-g-polyacrylonitrile-based adsorbent. At first, the corn stalk was treated with potassium hydroxide and nitric acid to obtain the corn stalk-based cellulose (CS), and then the CS was modified by 2-bromoisobutyrylbromide (2-BiBBr) to prepare a macroinitiator. After that, polyacrylonitrile (PAN) was grafted onto the macroinitiator by single-electron transfer living radical polymerization (SET-LRP). A novel adsorbent AO CS-g-PAN was, therefore, obtained by introducing amidoxime groups onto the CS-g-PAN with hydroxylamine hydrochloride (NH2OH · HCl). FTIR, SEM and XPS were applied to characterize the structure of AO CS-g-PAN. The adsorbent was then employed to remove Pb(II) and Cu(II), and it exhibited a predominant adsorption performance on Pb(II) and Cu(II). The effect of parameters, such as temperature, adsorption time, pH and the initial concentration of metal ions on adsorption capacity, were examined in detail during its application. Results suggest that the maximum adsorption capacity of Pb(II) and Cu(II) was 231.84 mg g–1 and 94.72 mg g−1, and the corresponding removal efficiency was 72.03% and 63%, respectively. The pseudo-second order model was more suitable to depict the adsorption process. And the adsorption isotherm of Cu(II) accorded with the Langmuir model, while the Pb(II) conformed better to the Freundlich isotherm model.

In the process of industrial wastewater discharge, water pollution remains a pressing challenge, with heavy metal pollution being the most critical issue. Electrochemical sensors offer advantages such as rapid response time, ease of integration with microprocessors for on-site testing. This paper proposes the use of self-assembled polystyrene (PS) microspheres as electrode modification materials, leveraging their ordered assembly structure to reduce signal differences between electrodes from different batches, thereby preparing an electrochemical sensor with good repeatability for the determination of heavy metal ions (HMIs) Cu(II), Zn(II), and Pb(II). The experiment employed square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV) to collect the stripping currents. The designed sensor exhibited sensitivities of 0.905 μA/μM, 0.408 μA/μM, and 0.264 μA/μM, as well as limits of detection (LODs) of 0.13 μM, 0.25 μM, and 0.29 μM (S/N = 3) for Cu(II), Zn(II), and Pb(II), respectively. To enhance detection accuracy, peak current, full stripping current, and feature current were respectively input combined with machine learning (ML) algorithms to construct prediction models to evaluate the performance of the sensor. The results demonstrated that the constructed RF-Feature model significantly improved detection accuracy. It demonstrated excellent reliability, with R 2 values of 0.9952, 0.9973, and 0.9976, and root mean square error (RMSE) values of 0.6580 μM, 0.5838 μM, and 0.8164 μM, for Cu(II), Zn(II), and Pb(II), respectively. The detection range was 1 μM to 70 μM. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the sensor in practical applications was validated by detection in real wastewater samples from industrial and hospital emissions. These results were validated using an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) method.

The high chlorine (Cl) and lead (Pb) content characteristics of municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWIFA) pose environmental risks and hinder resource utilization. Herein, an MSWIFA-based magnesium potassium phosphate cement (MKPC) preparation strategy was developed, which allowed the MSWIFA recycling and the Pb-Cl synergistic immobilization without the washing pretreatment . The compressive strength of the resulting 10 wt% MSWIFA-based MKPC was 28.44 MPa, with over 99.2% reduction in leaching toxicity of Pb and Cl. The high-angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscope (HAADF-STEM) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) analyzes showed that Pb, phosphate and Cl - formed Pb 5 (PO 4 ) 3 Cl in MKPC. In-situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) tests showed that Pb 3 (PO 4 ) 2 was gradually transformed to Pb 5 (PO 4 ) 3 Cl through a dissolution-precipitation process. The formation energy, Bader charge, charge density difference and density of states (DOS) of Pb 5 (PO 4 ) 3 Cl were analyzed by first-principles calculations, confirming that Pb 5 (PO 4 ) 3 Cl was more thermodynamically stable than Pb 3 (PO 4 ) 2 and PbCl 2 and that electronic interactions between Pb-p, O-p, P-p and Cl-p orbits were the origin of Pb-Cl synergistic immobilization. This work provides a new strategy for the resource utilization of MSWIFA without washing pretreatment, and provides an in-depth understanding of the Pb-Cl synergistic immobilization mechanism.

The content of heavy metals is an important index to measure the quality and safety of salt. However, due to the high content of Na(I) in salt causing a large background interference, it is difficult to accurately analyze trace Pb(II) through the existing atomic absorption spectrometry. Therefore, it is of great significance to design a new solid-phase extraction (SPE) material for the removal and determination of Pb(II) from salt. Herein, using polystyrene microspheres as carriers, the chitosan-coated polystyrene SPE fillers PS@SO3H@G-CTS were synthesized by sulfonating with sulfonyl chloride, coating with chitosan and crosslinking with glutaraldehyde successively. The structure was characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, SEM, XRD and thermal stability. The SPE column prepared by PS@SO3H@G-CTS was used for the adsorption of heavy metal Pb(II) in salt, with 0.1 mol L−1 of HCl as Na(I) eluent and 2 mmol L−1 of EDTA-2Na as Pb(II) eluent. The salt concentration below 0.03 g mL−1 could better reflect the performance of column, with the recovery rate of 101.17–106.45% by standard addition. The PS@SO3H@G-CTS fillers could remove Na(I) under certain salt concentration, so as to accurately determine Pb(II) in the actual sample. Their adsorbability was undisturbed by common anions and low concentration of cations.

Lead–silver (Pb–Ag) anodes in the zinc electrowinning industry face severe challenges of electrochemical corrosion and sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics. Precoating a protective MnO2 layer is an effective strategy to enhance their performance. However, conventional MnO2 precoating processes require high temperatures (≥80 °C) and suffer from drawbacks such as poor coverage, loose structure, and insufficient active sites. This study proposes a novel low-temperature MnO2 coating strategy tuned by K+ intercalation, enabling the controllable fabrication of high-performance MnO2 coatings from zinc electrowinning waste electrolytes. The results reveal that introducing an appropriate amount of K+ modulates the redox behavior of Mn2+ and the electrochemical crystallization process, leading to the formation of a uniform MnO2 film on the Pb–Ag anode. The intercalation of K+ into the MnO2 lattice promotes the generation of abundant surface vacancies, which enhance the OER performance. This work presents a scalable solution for low-temperature coating of MnO2 film on Pb–Ag anodes, enabling efficient and clean zinc electrowinning, and opens a new avenue for designing energy-efficient MnO2-based anode materials through additive intercalation tuning.
