Although silicon is a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries, efficient and controllable synthesis of silicon anodes with good cyclability and low electrode swelling remains a major challenge. Here, we have synthesized a novel bread-like Si/C composite with a yolk-double shell structure through sol–gel and self-template methods. In this design, the zeolite imidazolate framework-derived nitrogen-doped porous carbon skeleton is applied to enhance the electrical conductivity of silicon, and the adequate space inside the yolk-double shell structure can effectively mitigate the volume change of silicon. Additionally, porous structures are not only conducive to the rapid diffusion of the electrolyte but also shorten the migration channel of lithium ions and electrons. The stable bread-like double carbon layer structure helps in the formation of stable solid electrolyte interphase films. As expected, the composite demonstrates exceptional electrochemical properties, including outstanding reversible capacity (868.1 mA h g−1 after 500 extended cycles at 1 A g−1) and remarkable rate capability (408.1 mA h g−1 at a high current density of 5 A g−1). Moreover, the anode has a low electrode expansion rate of 31% after cycling. This study provides a new idea for designing high-stability silicon-based anode materials.

The strong metal–support interaction (MSI) has been widely attributed to enhanced catalytic activity. However, this attribution might be wrong in catalytic ozonation, since MSI that is too strong might impede the activation of electron-poor ozone molecules. Herein, we reported a strategy to subtly modulate the Mn–O–Si interaction by intercalating the carbon film between the silica support and active manganese oxide. When using MnOx/0.5C/SiO2 with the moderate MSI as a catalyst in the catalytic ozonation of refractory paracetamol (PCM), 91.1 ± 2.4% of PCM was removed within 30 min, about 30% higher than that using the catalyst of MnOx/SiO2 with a strong MSI. Moreover, the reaction rate reached 8.01 × 10–2 min–1, 2.2 and 1.3 times that with MnOx/SiO2 and MnOx/1C/SiO2, respectively. Importantly, further integration of MnOx/0.5C/SiO2 into membrane filtration achieved high rejections of PCM (>94.3%) under various realistic water scenarios during a continuous 12 h operation, demonstrating strong resistance to environmental matrices interference. Experimental and theoretical evidence revealed that the moderate MSI resulted in the high dispersion of active MnOx nanoclusters in the size of 2.3–4.4 nm and promoted the adsorption of ozone over MnOx and its dissociation into surface *O, •OH, •O2–, and 1O2 for decontamination. As a constructive work, this study revealed the significance of MSI in catalytic ozonation and offered a simple regulation method for constructing active interfaces of metal-supported catalysts.

Bismaleimide (BMI) resins is widely used in the aerospace field because of its excellent properties, but its poor toughness limits the possibility of its application in a wider range of fields. Therefore, a novel bio-compound, 4-(allyloxy)-3-methoxy-N-(3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl)benzamide (AMTPM), was designed and synthesized from renewable vanillin, which has Schiff-base structure, silico-oxygen bond structure, and allyl structure. The chemical structure of AMTPM has been characterized and validated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and hydrogen nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H NMR). It was found that the addition of AMTPM can effectively promote the curing behavior of BD resins (BMI and diallyl bisphenol A (DBA) was mixed and cured at the ratio of 1:0.87, named BD resins). AMTPM can affect the thermal stability and improve the mechanical properties of BD-AMTPM resins (BD resins modified by AMTPM in different addition), and the detailed discussion was conducted. With the increase of AMTPM content, the thermal stability of BD-AMTPM resins was deteriorated while the residual weight percentage at 800°C ( Y c ) was increased. When the content of AMTPM reached 12 wt%, the results showed that Y c achieved the values at a magnitude of 37.57%. Meanwhile, the glass transition temperature ( T g ) achieved 320°C. Among the BD-AMTPM resins system, the BD-6 wt% AMTPM has the best toughness and mechanical properties. The impact strength was increased by 29.2%, the tensile strength was increased by 22.1% and the elongation at break was increased by 44%. The fracture morphology of BD-AMTPM resins was also studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to support the mechanical experimental conclusions. This study provides a more environmentally friendly and convenient modifier, which is of great significance for expanding the application of bismaleimide resin. Highlights A bio-based modifying agent (AMTPM) was designed and successfully synthesized. AMTPM has both Si-O and Schiff-base structures. AMTPM can effectively improve the toughness of BD-AMTPM resins through impact and tensile tests.

Silicon boron carbonitride (SiBCN) ceramics have garnered significant attention due to their exceptional high-temperature stability, resistance to creep, and favorable electrical properties. However, the ceramicization mechanism of covalently bonded boron atoms in polyborosilazane (PBSN), which is crucial in determining the structural and crystalline phase evolution of silicon boron carbonitride (SiBCN) ceramics through the polymer-to-ceramic process, still needs further clarification for the design of advanced ceramics. Therefore, PBSN precursors constructed with B–C bonds were systematically investigated in the polymer-to-ceramic conversion process. B–C bonds were transformed into B-N bonds between 300°C and 600°C, ultimately resulting in the formation of h-BN at high temperatures. Meanwhile, higher levels (8.11–14.12%) of B facilitated the formation of SiC at equivalent temperatures but hindered the formation of Si 3 N 4 crystal nuclei. That is due to the formation of B–N and NB 3 units, which inhibited the formation of Si–N bonds and SiN 4 units, thereby interfering with the nucleation process of Si 3 N 4 and facilitating the crystallization of SiC. This study offers valuable insights for regulating the microphase evolution and properties of PDC nanocomposites.

In the realm of electronic packaging advancements, the utilization of metal to ceramic joints has garnered significant attention. This manuscript details the development of a specific glass solder with excellent wettability and a thermal expansion coefficient of 8.1 × 10 −6 °C −1 , comprising 35Bi 2 O 3 -30B 2 O 3 -15ZnO-20SiO 2 (mol.%). This design achieves reliable connection of the Al 2 O 3 ceramics and Kovar alloy in an atmospheric environment. The interface reaction between the glass solder, Al 2 O 3 ceramics, and oxidized Kovar alloy resulted in the formation of ZnAl 2 O 4 particles and Bi spheres at the joints. The enhancement in joint shear strength was primarily attributed to the nanoscale, dispersed ZnAl 2 O 4 particles. However, the presence of microscale Bi spheres, with a lower elastic modulus than the glass solder, initiated cracks during shear deformation, thereby compromising the integrity of the joint. Optimization of brazing temperatures enabled control over the ZnAl 2 O 4 and Bi sphere phases within the joints, yielding a peak shear strength of 51.7 ± 8.9 MPa at 650 °C. This study highlights the achievement of high-performance metal-ceramic bonding through tailored interface reactions and optimized joint microstructures.

Glass matrices with high waste load capacity, stability, and economic viability holds significant technological implications for efficient and safe nuclear waste immobilization. Aluminosilicate glasses with various Si/Al molar ratios were successfully prepared by incorporating Al 2 O 3 into natural granite, effectively enabling precise regulation of the Si/Al ratios and overcoming the challenge of achieving complete vitrification. Here, we report a glass waste form with ultra-high CeO 2 loading (up to 20 wt .%) that exhibits excellent structural stability. At a Si/Al molar ratio of 3:1, cerium can incorporate into the glass network by forming Ce-O bonds through coordination with oxygen atoms in the [AlO 6 ] units. [AlO 6 ] is converted to more stable [AlO 4 ], thereby enhancing the stability of the glass. Up to 20 wt .% CeO 2 (9.62 mol%) can be fully incorporated into the glass system, where approximately 79.71 % of the bridging oxygen atoms form stable Si-O-Si and [AlO 4 ] units, contributing to a structurally robust glass network. The Ce-O bond length in the glass matrix is shorter (2.27 Å) than in CeO 2 , confirming enhanced coordination stability and aligning with superior chemical durability and mechanical properties. This work highlights the critical role of the Si/Al molar ratio and establishes low-cost granite could serve as a viable host material for nuclear waste immobilization.

Silicon is a promising anode material for high-performance lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), but its rapid capacity degradation has significantly hindered its large-scale application. In this study, we propose an in situ self-assembly polymerization method to fabricate a stable silicon-based anode by leveraging electrostatic self-assembly technology, in situ esterification, and amidation reactions. The incorporation of a cross-linked polymer, combined with the synergistic effects of electrostatic interactions between negatively charged MXene and positively charged silane-coupling-agent-modified silicon, offers a novel strategy for enhancing the electrochemical performance of LIBs. Notably, annealed electrodes with a 65 wt% nmSi-NH2/MXene ratio demonstrate outstanding electrochemical performance, achieving a capacity of 929.5 mAh g⁻¹ at a current density of 1 A g⁻¹ after 100 charge/discharge cycles. These findings suggest that the integration of cross-linked polymers and electrostatic self-assembly can significantly improve the intercalation and overall electrochemical performance of silicon anodes in lithium-ion batteries.

Silicon-carbon composite anodes hold the promise to resolve the irreversible capacity fading of silicon in lithium-ion batteries but face persistent challenges dominated by unstable, physical interfacial contacts. Herein, a laser-directed covalent bonding strategy is developed to construct atomic-scale Si–N–C bridges between silicon suboxide (SiO x ) nanoparticles and a 3D nitrogen-doped graphene framework. Localized photothermal processing of polyimide-urea-SiO x precursors on carbon-coated copper foil enables in situ integration of chemically anchored SiO x within a conductive graphene network. The architecture achieves dual stabilization: (i) strong Si–N–C covalent bonds suppress interfacial cracking, while (ii) hierarchical porosity accommodates strain via elastic deformation. Critically, direct fabrication eliminates slurry-derived defects, ensuring structural integrity and minimized interfacial impedance. The optimized composite anode delivers 1826.4 mAh g -1 at 0.1 A g -1 and retains 91.3% capacity over 1000 cycles at a high current density of 2.0 A g -1 , demonstrating exceptional stability under high-rate operation. Mechanistically, density functional theory (DFT) reveals that Si–N–C bonding lowers lithium-ion (Li⁺) adsorption energy (–6.549 eV) and redistributes interfacial charge density, synergistically accelerating ion transport. This work provides atomic-scale insights into covalent interface design and establishes a scalable laser-processing strategy of composite anodes for durable high-energy-density batteries. Graphical

Lithium metal anodes are an ideal candidate material for high energy density lithium-ion batteries. However, the uncontrollable growth of lithium dendrites and infinite volume expansion are a big challenge for the commercialization of lithium metal anodes. In order to realize dendrite-free lithium metal anodes, we prepared N-doped carbon/Si nanoparticles composite film modified Ni foam (NFSC) via a simple impregnation-calcination method as a three-dimensional (3D) lithiophilic skeleton for lithium metal anodes. NFSC has several advantages, including a 3D porous conductive structure, a large specific surface area, uniformly distributed abundant lithiophilic nitrogen-containing functional groups and Si nanoparticles providing abundant lithium nucleation sites. This reduces nucleation overpotential, facilitates uniform lithium deposition, suppresses the growth of lithium dendrites, and significantly improves the cycling stability of lithium metal anodes. As a result, NFSC exhibits low nucleation overpotential and the Li||NFSC half-cell maintains a high Coulombic efficiency (CE) of 99.15 % after 1000 cycles at 1 mA cm −2 and 1 mAh cm −2 . Moreover, the NFSC in a symmetric cell exhibits low polarization voltage of 18 mV together with an ultra-long cycling life of over 2000 h at 1 mA cm −2 and 1 mAh cm −2 . Furthermore, the full cell assembled with LiFePO 4 and NFSC@Li demonstrates superior rate performance and excellent long-term cycling stability. The long-term cycling stability exceeds 2500 cycles at 0.5C, far surpassing that of LiFePO 4 ||Li full cell (600 cycles). This work provides a simple and effective approach to achieve dendrite-free lithium metal anodes.

Silicon (Si) is a promising anode material for high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries. To achieve wide practical applications, it is highly desirable to build effective solidelectrolyte interphase (SEI) with high stability and high Li + conductivity. Herein, a novel interface engineering strategy is demonstrated with the assistance of a surfactant and the self-assembly of chitosan (CS) skin on Si surface. A high coating integrity of the Si particle is obtained compared to that without surfactants. Unlike traditional surface coatings, the positive charge of the applied CS layer enables it to selectively absorb PF 6 − anions in the electrolyte. The PF 6 − aggregates in Helmholtz layer lead to the formation of anion-derived SEI enriched in LiF species. As the result, the prepared CS-decorated Si anode exhibits a high initial coulombic efficiency of 92.2% and a high rate capability of 2200 mAh g −1 capacity at 10 C rate. After 500 charge–discharge cycles, it is still able to retain a reversible capacity 1621.3 mAh g −1 . Furthermore, the excellent electrochemical property is demonstrated in full cells against NCM811 cathode. The novel interface engineering strategy provides a new SEI mechanism and demonstrates a feasible and effective way to develop high-performance Si-based lithium-ion batteries.

There are many recent strategies using self-healing functionality to effectively address the chemo-mechanical interface evolution and extend battery performance. Revealing how the mechanical properties affect interface stability is important but challenging. Here, taking a self-healing Ga-interface-encapsulated Si/C as a model, we perform electrochemical atomic force microscopy to probe the mechanical properties of the shallow interface (<30 nm) upon cycling. Instead of bearing a high Young’s modulus, the Ga-Si/C interface exhibits distinctive plastic deformation and adhesion features related to the liquid-to-solid transition. In quantitative analysis using a plastic index, the Ga layer sustains a pronounced degree of plastic deformation, in sharp contrast to the neat Si/C. We also identify the maximum adhesion for liquid and semi-solid Ga, which forms a heterogeneous but continuous network. COMSOL modeling corroborates the plastic deformation and adhesion, effectively alleviating the local stress at the interface and accommodating the dynamic solid-electrolyte interface evolution.

Ceramic parts with complex structures can be manufactured by three-dimensional (3D) printing technology. However, the ceramic raw materials available for 3D printing are very limited. This paper mainly focuses on the selection, composition, and proportion optimization of ceramic precursor systems. The optimal photoinitiator was selected by comparing the ultraviolet absorption bands of 2,2-dimethoxy-2-phenylacetophenone), diphenyl(2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl)phosphine oxide, and bis(2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl)-phenylphosphine oxide (819) photoinitiators. In addition, the effects of different photoinitiators on system reactions and curing efficiency were considered, and the content of photoinitiators was optimized based on actual conditions. The mercapto-to-vinyl ratio was optimized to obtain Si-O-C-based ceramic raw materials that could be used for photo-curing 3D printing by comparing the ceramic yield, size shrinkage, and mechanical properties.
