In this study, a novel Z-scheme ZnO-AgCl-Ag photocatalyst was prepared by converting the metal-organic framework ZIF-8 to ZnO via a simple pyrolysis method and using a physical wet mixing method. The crystal structure, microstructure, elemental distribution, and photoelectrochemical properties of the catalyst were systematically characterized using various analytical techniques. The characterization results showed that the introduction of AgCl/Ag into ZnO exhibited a higher light absorption capacity as well as a lower transmission resistance. Photocatalytic degradation experiments showed that the ZA-3 sample achieved a 99.97 % degradation rate of 10 mg/L RhB in 24 min, which was 2.3 higher than that of ZIF-8-derived ZnO. In addition, we systematically investigated the effects of initial RhB concentration, solution pH, anion interference, and catalyst recycling cycle on the photocatalytic activity, demonstrating the stability and applicability of the composites under different conditions. In addition, radical trapping experiments were conducted to probe the photocatalytic reaction mechanism, and a Z-scheme charge transfer pathway was confirmed, in which photogenerated electrons were effectively separated and transferred at the Z-scheme heterojunction interface through the conductive channel of Ag nanoparticles as carriers, which significantly improved the photocatalytic activity. In this study, the advantages of MOFS were rationally and effectively utilized to design and prepare Z-scheme photocatalysts with UV–visible response.

Mussels are nutrient-rich but perishable, resulting in substantial resource loss. A protease-producing strain (Bacillus velezensisZ-1,Mytilus edulis) isolated from marine sludge was used to hydrolyze mussels, producing Y-1, a hydrolysate with antioxidant activity. In this study, ultrafiltration, gel chromatography, and LC-MS/MS were employed to isolate and identify bioactive peptides from the hydrolysate. The results revealed that the hydrolysate exhibited antioxidant activity, pancreatic cholesterol esterase inhibitory activity, pancreatic lipase inhibitory activity, and α-glucosidase inhibitory activity. Molecular docking using AutoDock Tools 1.5.6 was performed to analyze the interactions of peptides with CD38 and Keap1, leading to the identification of five potentially bioactive peptides: VPPFY, IMLFP, LPFLF, FLPF, and FPRIM. These peptides formed hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic interactions with CD38 and Keap1, demonstrating strong DPPH radical scavenging and superoxide anion radical scavenging capacities. This study highlights the multifunctional bioactive potential of these peptides, offering insights into their therapeutic applications. The findings provide a novel approach for the effective utilization of mussel resources and highlight their potential application value in the development of functional foods.

Inspired by natural enzymes, artificial enzymes have garnered significant interest due to their simplicity of production, robustness under harsh conditions, and enhanced stability. This study introduces, for the first time, a novel Z/Ce@hemin composite enzyme, constructed by anchoring hemin onto zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8)-encapsulated ceria (CeO 2 ) nanoparticles. This innovative design overcomes the challenges of hemin dimerization, enhances substrate affinity, and accelerates mass transport, leading to significantly improved peroxidase-like activity. The enzyme also demonstrates remarkable stability and resistance to environmental interference. Utilizing this Z/Ce@hemin composite, a sensitive and selective colorimetric detection system was developed for rapid and accurate quantification of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), a key oxidative stress marker. This approach was successfully applied in cellular models and Caenorhabditis elegans models of Parkinson’s disease, enabling precise monitoring of H 2 O 2 . The study provides a groundbreaking platform for oxidative stress modeling and expands possibilities in neurodegenerative disease research and therapeutic screening.

Photocatalytic CO 2 reduction technology plays a significant role in the energy and environmental sectors, highlighting the necessity for developing high-efficiency and stable catalysts. In this study, a novel photocatalyst, x NiCo 2 O 4 /CN ( x = 1, 3, and 5 wt%), was synthesized by depositing zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67)-derived nickel cobaltate (NiCo 2 O 4 ) hollow nanocages onto porous graphitic carbon nitride ( g -C 3 N 4 , CN) nanosheets for photocatalytic CO 2 reduction. Under visible light irradiation, the resulting 3NiCo 2 O 4 /CN photocatalyst demonstrated exceptional CO yields of up to 2879.5 μmol g −1 h −1 , surpassing those of NiCo 2 O 4 and CN alone by factors of 3.3 and 11.6, respectively. The introduction of hollow NiCo 2 O 4 nanocages increased the specific surface area of the material and enhanced the number of active sites, while strengthening visible light absorption. The creation of a built-in electric field, induced by the Fermi level difference between the two materials, was confirmed through ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) characterization. This resulted in the formation of a Z-scheme heterojunction, significantly enhancing the separation and migration of photogenerated charge carriers. Notably, 3NiCo 2 O 4 /CN exhibits excellent stability during long-term photocatalytic reactions, ensuring reliable performance for practical applications. This study offers novel insights and methodologies for developing efficient photocatalytic CO 2 reduction catalysts.

In order to effectively degrade tetracycline (TC), a novel B i PO 4 / B i 2 F e 4 O 9 photocatalytic composite was created in this study. When compared to several bismuth-based photocatalytic materials, the system demonstrated excellent degradation activity. PMS is activated under visible light irradiation. System B i PO 4 / B i 2 F e 4 O 9 /PMS/Vis removes 89.3% of TC in 60 minutes. Based on the energy band structures of B i 2 F e 4 O 9 and B i PO 4 , the catalytic efficiency of the composites could be explained by type Z heterojunction mechanism. Superoxide radicals and holes are the primary causes of TC degradation, as shown by experiments using electron paramagnetic resonance and free radical entrapment. In addition, the system B i PO 4 / B i 2 F e 4 O 9 /PMS/Vis maintained its high degradation capacity and pristine composition after multiple recycling. The reaction system's TC degradation was not considerably impacted by pH, anions, or ionic strength. The TC degradation intermediates demonstrated a noteworthy decrease in toxicity within the BPFO-10/PMS/Vis system, hence guaranteeing the intermediates' safe conversion. These findings highlight the significant potential of the novel bismuth-based photocatalytic composite for degrading emerging pollutants in wastewater.

Rational design of heterojunction is of vital importance for addressing the rapid recombination problem of photogenerated charge carriers in photoreactions. Herein, a highly efficient Z-scheme heterojunction with interfacial Zn-O-Ce bonds was successfully fabricated by hybridizing 3D flower-like hierarchical ZnCo 2 O 4 (ZCO) microspheres with CeO 2 nano particles (NPs) and used to photocatalytic remove multiple pollutants. These features of Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism and chemically bonded interface not only reserved the strong oxidation–reduction ability of CeO 2 /ZCO hybrid but also speeded up electron migration from CeO 2 to ZCO. Meanwhile, the 3D hierarchical structure provided rich photocatalytic reaction sites and increased light harvesting ability. Thus, the as-prepared CeO 2 /ZCO displayed an extraordinary photocatalytic decomposition of Ciprofloxacin (CIP) and Basic Fuchsin (BF), removal rate as high as 87.6 % and 90.7 %, respectively. This work can enlighten a new insight to design versatile hetero-catalysts for solar energy conversion.

Photocatalytic water splitting is a highly promising approach for sustainable hydrogen production. However, a critical challenge lies in developing photocatalysts that simultaneously achieve efficient charge separation and abundant catalytic active sites. Herein, a novel heterojunction system composed of ZnIn 2 S 4 integrated with copper-modified UiO-66-NH 2 (ZnIn 2 S 4 /Cu-UiO-66-NH 2 ) is developed as an efficient photocatalyst for hydrogen production. The optimal ZnIn 2 S 4 /Cu-UiO-66-NH 2 exhibits a hydrogen evolution rate of 630.25 μmol g −1 h −1 under visible-light irradiation, demonstrating a remarkable 114-fold enhancement compared to pristine UiO-66-NH 2 . The excellent photocatalytic performance originates from the novel Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism between ZnIn 2 S 4 and Cu-UiO-66-NH 2 , which facilitates efficient charge separation while maintaining strong redox capabilities. Furthermore, the incorporated Cu species serve as highly efficient active sites for hydrogen evolution. This work provides a rational design strategy for constructing Z-scheme heterojunctions, advancing the development of efficient artificial photosynthesis systems for sustainable energy applications.

Graphical A layered cascade bio-solar cell inspired by artificial photosynthesis is constructed using chlorophyll (Chl) and bacteriochlorophyll derivatives (BChl) to emulate PSI and PSII, respectively. Sub-ns TAS reveals a prolonged charge transfer state from BChl to Chl (Chl – /BChl + ), compared to the reverse (Chl + /BChl – ). This confirms the biomimetic device effectively replicates the natural photosynthetic electron transfer mechanism. The natural Z-scheme of oxygenic photosynthesis efficiently drives electron transfer from photosystem II (PSII) to photosystem I (PSI) via an electron transport chain, despite the lower energy levels of PSII. Inspired by this sophisticated mechanism, we present a layered cascade bio-solar cell (CBSC) that emulates the Z-scheme. In this design, chlorophyll derivatives (Chl) act as PSI analogs, while bacteriochlorophyll derivatives (BChl) serve as PSII analogs in the active layer. The resulting photocurrent, prominently detected in the near-infrared region, is validated through external quantum efficiency measurements. Sub-nanosecond transient absorption spectroscopy reveals a prolonged charge transfer (CT) state from BChl to Chl (Chl – /BChl + species) compared to the reverse direction (Chl + /BChl – species). This asymmetry highlights a dominant electron flow from BChl (PSII analog) to Chl (PSI analog) under simultaneous excitation, effectively replicating the natural Z-scheme electron transfer. These findings represent a significant advance in the design of bio-inspired solar cells, paving the way for artificial photosynthesis systems and offering profound insights into improving photovoltaic theory and efficiency.

In our study, a series of WO 3 /Bi 2 MoO 6 heterostructured photocatalysts consisting of Bi 2 MoO 6 nanosheets and WO 3 nanorods were synthesized. Due to the Bi 2 MoO 6 nanosheets with two-dimensional structure, the as-prepared WO 3 /Bi 2 MoO 6 heterostructures had abundant oxygen vacancy defects and high exposure of active Bi 2 MoO 6 (010) facets. Compared with the pure Bi 2 MoO 6 and the oxygen vacancy-poor WO 3 /Bi 2 MoO 6 sample, the WO 3 /Bi 2 MoO 6 heterostructure with WO 3 weight ratios of 6 wt% (denoted as WO/BMO(6)) displayed improved photocatalytic activities in degradation of RhB and OTC under visible-light irradiation. The photoluminescence spectra, photoelectrochemical measurements and DOS analysis illustrated that the desirable photocatalytic performance of the WO/BMO(6) composite was attributed to the synergistic effect of heterojunction interface and oxygen vacancy defects on the efficient charge separation and transfer. Based on the trapping experiments, a Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism was proposed for the WO 3 /Bi 2 MoO 6 heterostructure.

Plasmonic photocatalysts have attracted considerable attention in photocatalytic systems. In this study, amorphous molybdenum oxide (MoO3−x) nanodots were anchored onto ZnIn2S4 nanospheres by a hydrothermal method. The prepared ZnIn2S4/MoO3−x (ZM) composites were then used as a visible-light-responsive catalyst to achieve photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Afterwards, the ZM composites were extensively characterized using multiple instruments and electrochemical measurements. Afterwards, the photocatalytic activity of ZM composites was evaluated under simulated sunlight (AM 1.5G) with 10% triethanolamine (TEOA) as a sacrificial reagent. Compared to pristine ZnIn2S4, the optimal composite (ZM10) boosts the hydrogen evolution rate from 1.34 mmol g−1 h−1 to 11.08 mmol g−1 h−1 and the apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) at 420 nm from 1.81% to 6.14%. The mechanism behind the enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution was explored by infrared thermal image measurement, EPR tests, XPS valence band measurement and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of MoO3−x and the formation of an interfacial Z-scheme heterojunction are revealed to be responsible for the improved photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Finally, the cyclic experiment results show that ZM10 maintains a high hydrogen evolution rate after 5 cycles of testing, indicating strong chemical stability and good industrial potential.

The design of a double Z-type heterojunction represents a promising strategy in photocatalysis to achieve superior charge carrier separation, increased light-harvesting capability, and consequently, a higher photocatalytic reaction rate. Herein, a novel ternary heterojunction with direct dual Z-scheme configuration, g-C3N4/In2S3/In2O3 photocatalyst, was synthesized using a chemical bath and facile calcination process. The XRD, SEM-EDS and XPS results confirmed the successful integration of g-C3N4, In2S3, and In2O3 with preserved crystalline phases. Photocatalytic performances of the ternary composite were evaluated via two effective routes, such as methyl orange (MO) degradation and hydrogen (H2) generation, benchmarked against the pristine g-C3N4 and the g-C3N4/In2S3 and In2S3/In2O3 binary composite, revealing that the in-situ growth of In2O3 onto the g-C3N4/In2S3 composite contributed to the remarkable enhancement of their photocatalytic activity. The photodegradation process follows the pseudo-first order reaction kinetics. The ternary g-C3N4/In2O3/In2S3 heterojunction exhibited 94.8% degradation efficiency of MO with a corresponding rate of 23.4×10-3 min-1, 4.8 times higher than the pristine g-C3N4, and excellent photocatalytic activity in five consecutive cycles. Similarly, the g-C3N4/In2S3/In2O3 heterojunction exhibited a rate constant of ~2.4 mmol h−1 g−1 for H2 generation. This superior enhancement was attributed to the dual Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism. The formation of direct dual Z-scheme heterojunction improved the light harvesting, minimized electron hole recombination, and efficiently facilitated the separation of charge carriers. This work provided a mechanistic insight for engineering multifunctional heterojunction for environmental remediation and pollutant mitigation.

In this study, we report the development of indirect Z-scheme heterojunction to construct a cathodic photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor for highly-selective detection of endogenous H 2 S using AgCl-Ag core–shell nanostructures coupled with porous carbon nitride (PCN) as cathode materials. As an electron mediator, Ag on the Z-scheme heterojunction transformed to Ag 2 S in the presence of H 2 S, resulting in the destruction of original charge-carrier migration pathway. Meanwhile, photo-induced charges on the then formed AgCl-Ag 2 S/PCN cannot be as effectively separated as they are on AgCl-Ag/PCN due to the straddling energy band alignments. A decrease in cathodic signal may be expected. Consequently, the H 2 S concentration could be quantitated by such corresponding decrease, which thus underlines a novel signal-off cathodic PEC bioanalysis strategy. More importantly, the ‘Z-scheme’ PEC sensor based on AgCl-Ag/PCN exhibits analytical performance with high sensitivity, showing its potential to be applied to the areas of biomedical and health care etc.
