To achieve efficient degradation of organic pollutants, two critical objectives are enhancing photogenerated carrier separation and expanding the spectral response range. In this study, we synthesized atom-sharing Bi/Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 :Yb 3+ ,Tm 3+ (Bi/BYT) heterojunctions with surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effects and upconversion (UC) by employing self-sacrificial Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 :Yb 3+ ,Tm 3+ (BYT) fractions as a source of metallic Bi. Results revealed that the optimal Bi/BYT-2 catalyst exhibited the highest BPA degradation efficiency within 120 min, representing a significant 1.3-fold improvement over BYT alone. This outstanding catalytic performance can be attributed to the synergistic interplay between UC fluorescence, the unique SPR effect of Bi metal, and the atom-sharing heterojunction. These factors effectively broaden the spectral absorption range and significantly enhance the separation and utilization efficiency of photoinduced carriers. This study lays the groundwork for the development and design of novel atomic-level contact heterojunctions, offering insights into enhancing photocatalytic efficiency through plasmon resonance and UC fluorescence on non-precious metal surfaces.

Multi-modal combination therapy for tumor is expected to have superior therapeutic effect compared with monotherapy. In this study, a super-small bismuth/copper-gallic acid coordination polymer nanoparticle (BCN) protected by polyvinylpyrrolidone is designed, which is co-encapsulated with glucose oxidase (GOX) by phospholipid to obtain nanoprobe BCGN@L. It shows that BCN has an average size of 1.8 ± 0.7 nm, and photothermal conversion of BCGN@L is 31.35% for photothermal imaging and photothermal therapy (PTT). During the treatment process of 4T1 tumor-bearing nude mice, GOX catalyzes glucose in the tumor to generate gluconic acid and hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), which reacts with copper ions (Cu 2+ ) to produce toxic hydroxyl radicals (•OH) for chemodynamic therapy (CDT) and new fresh oxygen (O 2 ) to supply to GOX for further catalysis, preventing tumor hypoxia. These reactions increase glucose depletion for starvation therapy , decrease heat shock protein expression, and enhance tumor sensitivity to low-temperature PTT. The in vitro and in vivo results demonstrate that the combination of CDT with other treatments produces excellent tumor growth inhibition. Blood biochemistry and histology analysis suggests that the nanoprobe has negligible toxicity. All the positive results reveal that the nanoprobe can be a promising approach for incorporation into multi-modal anticancer therapy.

Li2ZrCl6 (LZC), a halide-based solid-state electrolyte, combines high ionic conductivity with cost-effectiveness, yet its atomic-scale ion transport mechanisms and doping strategies are insufficiently understood. Using first-principles calculations and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations, we first evaluated the intrinsic Li-ion migration behavior in bulk LZC. Potential energy surface analysis based on Li-ion site energies, combined with AIMD calculations, confirms the potential promotional effect of bismuth (Bi) cation doping on bulk ionic conductivity, increasing it to 10.93 mS cm–1 and reducing the activation energy to 241.77 meV. Experimental results also demonstrate that Bi doping significantly enhances the electrical conductivity of LZC. This improvement is attributed to a transition from short- to long-range cooperative Li-ion migration. Additionally, 50% bromine (Br) substitution helped to reduce energy fluctuations caused by cation disorder, leading to a more uniform migration pathway. Statistical analysis across multiple solid-state electrolyte (SSE) systems further showed that shorter nearest-neighbor Li–Li distances are strongly correlated with higher conductivity and lower activation energies. This work highlights the importance of local structure and short-range interactions in halide SSEs and proposes a Bi-doped LZC as a cost-effective, high-performance candidate for next-generation solid-state batteries.

Designing efficient, stable, and inexpensive catalysts for water splitting was critical for efficient, sustainable energy conversion. Here, a one-pot hot-colloidal route was adopted to synthesize the mono-dispersed NiCoP catalyst with a particle size of∼5.0 nm. To further improve the structural stability and electronic conductivity of the catalysts, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were introduced. The theoretical calculations suggested that a synergistic effect between Ni and Co in the NiCoP catalyst not only leads to an obvious charge redistribution but also facilitates the electron transfer from the surface to the reactant intermediates, being responsible for the optimal ΔG H* of the catalyst. As a result, NiCoP/CNTs exhibited good HER performance both in acidic and alkaline electrolytes . The overpotentials under alkaline and acidic electrolytes were 110 mV and114 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , respectively. In comparison with pristine Ni 2 P(Co 2 P), the overpotential of NiCoP/CNTs in acidic and alkaline electrolytes was reduced by 50(24) and 62(30) mV at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 . Even at the current densities of 50 and 200 mA cm −2 , NiCoP/CNTs still retains a much lower overpotential than other samples. Our results revealed the important roles of the synergistic effect between the transition metals and the interaction between CNTs and the phosphides, which provides some useful information for the design and optimization of relevant HER catalysts.

A novel multi-functional yolk-shell SiO 2 @TiO 2 /CDs(y-STCs) nanocomposite with interesting structure of SiO 2 cores, porous TiO 2 shell, and cavities was synthesized by using a simple method. The experimental results indicate that the yolk-shell structure and modification of carbon dots (CDs) play important roles in the enhancement of SERS signals and photocatalytic performance. The y-STCs nanocomposite used as the SERS substrate showed excellent efficiency and reproducibility for the detection of rhodamine 6G (R6G). The detection limit of R6G was shown to be as low as 6 × 10 −8 M. Furthermore, the fabricated y-STCs nanocomposite utilized as the photocatalytst for the degradation of dinitraphenols (DNP) can greatly shorten reaction time to 120 min compared with previous studies, and the DNP degradation rate could reach 96% under simulated sunlight irradiation. The y-STCs nanospheres also possessed excellent cycle stability for the photocatalytic degradation of DNP. Thus, the bi-functional y-STCs nanocomposite may have potential applications in the detection and photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants.

We report a modified synthesis route of colloidal gold nanorods (AuNRs) by combining the thermal re-shaping treatment and bi-surfactant modification using hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and sodium oleate (NaOL). Aspect ratios down to 1.3 ± 0.1 can be achieved in addition to good monodispersity, uniformity, and chemical stability of the materials. Furthermore, without needing post-treatment, metal ions directly interact with the AuNRs efficiently, allowing rapid and sensitive colorimetric detection of heavy metal ions such as Pb2+ and Cu2+ with a low concentration down to 2.5 μM. The detection performance in terms of selectivity, sensitivity and stability is systematically evaluated. The AuNRs with tunable aspect ratios as well as chemical stability have potential in surface-plasmon-based applications such as biochemical sensing, biochemical imaging, medical diagnostics, and cancer therapy.

Lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) is an affordable and rapid technique for detecting veterinary drugs such as sulfonamides (SAs). However, balancing accuracy, sensitivity, and convenience remains a challenge. To address this, a microfluidic chip-based LFIA utilizing a zirconium-based organic framework, PCN-222@liposome, was developed to simultaneously detect four Sas: sulfamethizole, sulfamethoxazole, sulfamethoxydiazine, and sulfathiazole, with both colorimetric and fluorescent dual-signal detection. In this study, PCN-222 was modified with liposomes to enhance its biocompatibility and water solubility. Characterization through scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, confirmed the successful incorporation of liposomes with PCN-222. Under optimized conditions, the PCN-222@liposome-LFIA demonstrated high sensitivity, with detection limits ranging from 0.01 to 0.05 μg/L using fluorescent signals—10 times more sensitive than conventional gold nanoparticle-based LFIA. Finally, the PCN-222@liposome-LFIA integrated with the microfluidic chip successfully detected the four SAs in chicken, shrimp, and milk samples, with recoveries ranging from 89.65 % to 118.78 %. This study presents a simple, sensitive, and efficient method for the rapid detection of veterinary drug residues.

Developing bismuth-carbon composites that can alleviate the stress concentration and volume expansion problems during the Bi/BiOCl conversion reaction is crucial for electrochemical desalination, especially Cl − removal technology, but it is still a great challenge. Here, we report a B/N co-doped bismuth encapsulated in carbon tubes. Using CAU-17 as a template, a carbon tubular material with multiple carbon layer structures was successfully synthesized by co-pyrolysis with BCN nanosheets, which achieved effective encapsulation of Bi. As the pyrolysis temperature increased, the continuous evaporation of Bi prompted the transformation of the carbon tube structure from a soft carbon to a hard carbon structure interconnected by multi-layered short graphene flakes. This alleviated the instability of the electrode caused by the volume expansion during the Bi/BiOCl transformation reaction and also provided additional ion storage capacity. When applied to the CDI dechlorination anode, Bi@BCN-900 exhibited a high desalination capacity of 145.96 mg g −1 and low energy consumption of 0.53 kWh kg −1 NaCl at an applied voltage of 1.2 V. Moreover, Bi@BCN-900 showed good stability over long-term cycling tests. This work expands the application of CAU-17 and offers new research insights for the design of bismuth-based materials for CDI dechlorination anodes.

Exploring a facile, rapid and efficient route to produce metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with highly accessible active sites is of great importance for catalysis. Here we demonstrate the CO 2 coordination can drive low temperature rapid synthesis of porphyrin-based bismuth-MOFs (Bi-PMOFs) by utilizing synergistic physical and chemical properties of supercritical CO 2 (SC-Bi-PMOFs). The molecular-level role of scCO 2 in the synthesis of SC-Bi-PMOFs have been investigated through a series of characterizations including in-situ time-dependent infrared spectroscopy, wherein chemical coordination of CO 2 promotes to fabricate 2D SC-Bi-PMOFs nanosheets. Moreover, the formation of Cu-PMOFs and Fe-PMOFs proves the universal scCO 2 strategy for synthesizing PMOFs. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations together with experiments results confirm the SC-Bi-PMOFs with abundant active sites guarantee efficient ligand-to-metal charge transfer and reduction efficiency of CO 2 . The high-efficiency utilization of CO 2 for synthesizing a series of MOFs and subsequent catalysis on photocatalytic CO 2 reduction for valuable chemicals realize the carbon recycle.

Graphical In the work, a Bi/ZnO@ZnSe photocathode with a lattice-matching interface and long-life high-energy photoelectrons is designed for the photoelectrocatalytic conversion of CO 2 to CO, which achieves a Faradaic efficiency of 88.9 % at −0.9 V vs. RHE and demonstrates excellent stability. The key aspect of the photoelectrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction (PEC CO 2 RR) lies in designing cathode materials that can generate high-energy photoelectrons, enabling the activation and conversion of CO 2 into high-value products. In this study, a coaxially wrapped ZnO@ZnSe array heterostructure was synthesized using a simple anion exchange strategy and metallic Bi nanoparticles (NPs) were subsequently deposited on the surface to construct a Bi/ZnO@ZnSe photocathode with high CO 2 conversion capability. This array photocathode possesses a large aspect ratio, which simultaneously satisfies a low charge carrier migration path and a large specific surface area that facilitates mass transfer. Additionally, the barrier formed at the n-n heterojunction interface hinders the transfer of high-energy photoelectrons from ZnSe to lower energy levels, resulting in their rapid capture by Bi while maintaining a relatively long lifetime. These captured electrons act as active sites, efficiently converting CO 2 into CO with a Faradaic efficiency above 88.9 % at −0.9 V vs. RHE and demonstrating superior stability. This work provides a novel approach for synthesizing high-energy photoelectrode materials with long lifetimes.

Indeed, the efficient and sustainable recovery of lithium from highly concentrated sodium-containing mother liquors of Li 2 CO 3 and salt-lake brines remains a significant challenge. Herein, two typical Li + recognition receptors, namely benzo-12-crown-4 and thenoyltrifluoroacetone, were separately introduced into the cationic and anionic parts to successfully synthesize novel bi-functionalized task-specific ionic liquids [(B12C4)C n im][TTA] (n = 4, 6, 8). A new, green, and high-efficiency extraction system has been developed by dissolving [(B12C4)C 6 im][TTA] in commercial room-temperature ionic liquid 1-hexyl-3-methyl-imdazolium bis(trifluromethylsulfonyl)imide [C 6 mim][NTf 2 ], without the addition of any other co-extractants. The newly developed [(B12C4)C 6 im][TTA]-[C 6 mim][NTf 2 ] extraction system exhibited a wide pH working range (4.0–11.0), high lithium extraction efficiency (95.4 %), as well as superior separation factors of Li/Na (β Li/Na = 2154.0) and Li/K (β Li/K =757.2). The extraction mechanism involving cation exchange was determined through slope analysis, ion chromatography, UV–vis spectroscopy and FT-IR spectra measurement, indicating that one [(B12C4)C 6 im][TTA] molecule can interact with two lithium ions and form a 1:2 complex. Moreover, the [(B12C4)C 6 im][TTA]-[C 6 mim][NTf 2 ] extraction system also demonstrated fast extraction kinetics, facile stripping and regeneration, along with good cycling performance. Furthermore, a multi-stage countercurrent extraction process to extract lithium from the simulated mother liquor of Li 2 CO 3 was evaluated. When the volume ratio (O/A) of oil phase (O) to water phase (A) was 1.0, only two theoretical extraction stages were needed to extract 91.4 % of lithium into the organic phase. Thus, the [(B12C4)C 6 im][TTA]-[C 6 mim][NTf 2 ] extraction system is promising for lithium extraction from mother liquor of Li 2 CO 3 and salt-lake brines. This study also opens the avenue for designing cationic and anionic bi-functionalized ionic liquids for metal ion separation.

Phenotypic screening has regained momentum in the pharmaceutical industry owing to its success over target-based screening. Most phenotypic screening relies on nonspecific biochemical readouts regarding cellular viability, which hampers the discovery of novel drug mechanisms of action (MOAs). Here we present a Contractility-based bi-Content micro-Collagen Chip (3CChip), which establishes cellular contractility as a biomechanics-related phenotype for drug screening. Bi-content analysis of cell contractility (imaged by iPhone) and viability suggests that the label-free contractility-based analysis exhibits superior sensitivity to compounds targeting contractile elements (e.g. focal adhesion, cytoskeleton), resulting in a enlarged target pool for drug assessment. Six typical readout patterns of drug response are summarized according to the relative positions of the contraction/viability curves, and drug targets are profiled into three categories (biomechanical, biochemical and housekeeping) by 3CChip, which will benefit subsequent target identification. The simple-to-use and effective 3CChip offers a robust platform for micro-tissue-based functional screening and may lead to a new era of mechanism-informed phenotypic drug discovery.
