Polymeric Particles as Pickering Interfacial Catalysts for Efficient Selective Oxidation of 5–Hydroxymethylfurfural

Yunyuan Dong,Qifu Zheng,Honglin Zhou,Kangqian Qiu,Chen Jin,Wenxiu Yuan,Xiang Shao,Qincheng Ma,Min Zhang,Jianming Liao,Xiaobin Chen,Ying Wang,Jun Tang

Selective oxidation of biomass compounds is one of the most important routes for the synthesis of high-value-added chemical intermediates, but multiple oxidation products are often generated during the oxidative process, resulting in poor selectivity. In this work, we construct raspberry-like amphiphilic polymeric nanoparticles by regulating the proportions of hydrophilic and hydrophobic monomers during polymerization using excess surfactant-stabilized microemulsion as templates. Next, the precursor on the surface of the polymers is converted to reactive 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidoxyl (TEMPO) through a post-oxidation procedure to obtain a polymeric catalyst. Such amphiphilic polymer particles are used as efficient interfacial catalysts in an oil–water biphasic system, which can be tightly adsorbed at the biphasic interfaces to construct a Pickering emulsion system for improving catalytic efficiency. As a result, this TEMPO-mediated oxidation reaction resulted in >99.0% conversion of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) with >99.0% selectivity toward 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF). Moreover, this interfacial catalytic system exhibited a high turnover frequency (TOF) value of 5.75 min–1, which outperformed superior catalytic activity compared to the reported results. At the end of the reaction, the CO2-responsive polymeric catalyst can be recovered and used for subsequent oxidation runs. This polymer-based Pickering emulsion system provides a promising route for the selective oxidation of high-value-added biomass compounds.

Electrocatalytic Hydrogenation of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural to 2,5-Bishydroxymethylfuran on the Bimetallic CuAg Nanocatalyst

Zhefei Zhao,Minhao Chen,Fengjiao Jian,Siqi Wang,Linlin Zhang,Huajun Zheng

The electrochemical transformation of biomass-based compounds has been regarded as an economical and eco-friendly route. In this aspect, converting 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-bishydroxymethylfuran (BHMF) via electrocatalytic hydrogenation technology is a promising topic. Although Cu-based catalysts demonstrate excellent performance in numerous electrocatalytic hydrogenation processes, their efficacy in BHMF production requires further improvement. Herein, we report a nanodendritic CuAg-based electrocatalyst on copper foam (CF) substrates (CuAg/CF). The CuAg-based electrode exhibits superior performance with 96.9% of HMF conversion, 97.6% of BHMF selectivity, and 96.8% of faradic efficiency (FE), surpassing the pure Cu and Ag electrode. In-situ experiments combined with calculating analysis using density functional theory (DFT) demonstrate that the improved reactivity for BHMF generation on the CuAg bimetallic catalyst is owing to the regulated electronic structure of CuAg through the synergistic effect between Cu and Ag, which results in the facilitated adsorption of HMF and reduced reaction energy barrier of the rate-determining step, respectively.

Controlled delivery of 5-fluorouracil from monodisperse chitosan microspheres prepared by emulsion crosslinking

Tong Wan,Qianqian Zhang,Guocheng Jin,Shiai Xu

This work aims to determine the optimal conditions for emulsion cross-linking of chitosan (CHS) with various molecular weights using glutaraldehyde as a cross-linking agent to produce 5-fluorouracil-loaded CHS microspheres (5-FU/CHS). Their drug loading and encapsulation efficiencies are found to be in the range of 3.87–12.35% and 20.13–70.45%, respectively. The dynamic light scattering results show that 5-FU/CHS microspheres are micron-sized with a uniform size distribution, and the scanning electron microscopy results show that they are spherical. The results of thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy demonstrate that 5-FU is successfully incorporated into the microspheres. The in vitro release tests show that 5-FU/CHS have a prolonged, pH-responsive release pattern of 5-FU, and the cumulative release rate under acidic condition is much larger than that under neutral conditions. The drug release kinetic analysis further demonstrates that the release of 5-FU can be well described by the Fickian diffusion model.

Bimetallic Co-Mn catalyzed chemselective oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid

Rui Zhu,Fang Gao,Xinglong Li

The development of efficient catalysts for the stepwise oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-diformyl furan (DFF), 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (HMFCA), 5-Formyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (FFCA) or 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is critical for biomass valorization. Herein, we reported a bimetallic Co-Mn catalyst anchored on nitrogen-doped porous carbon, which was used for the oxidation of HMF to FDCA, avoiding the use of high temperature and high-pressure oxygen. High FDCA selectivity (>95 %) was achieved through reaction condition optimization. And HMF→DFF→FFCA→FDCA was considered to be the main reaction pathway during the whole oxidation process. Additionally, the chemical environment of the constituent elements of the used catalyst was analyzed by XPS. TEM revealed that the catalyst retained its porous structure and excellent metal dispersion after the reaction. This structural stability was corroborated by sustained >90 % FDCA selectivity over five consecutive reaction cycles. This work established a dual-metal synergy strategy for multi-step oxidation pathways, offering insights into the design of robust catalysts for biomass-derived platform molecule upgrading.

A mechanical nano sensor based on magnetic-mediated sensitization for 5-HT detection

Penglong Yao,Zhaosheng Yan,Aoqun Jian,Jinsuo Bai,Haoyu Wang,Xing Guo,Shengbo Sang,Chuangang Zhou,Dong Zhao,Xiushan Dong

The real-time detection of neurotransmitters had attracted more attention due to the potential to provide vital information for pathology research, disease diagnosis, and clinical efficacy evaluation. Here, a magnetic-mediated nano sensor was developed to improve sensitivity for detection of serotonin (5-HT). The PDMS membrane doped with magnetic particles serves as a conversion element, enhancing the deformation of the thin film caused by surface stress under the action of a magnetic field and amplifying the resistance response signal of the nano sensor. The 5-HT detection associated with neurotransmitter diseases serve as a proof of concept revealing the magnetic sensitization. The detection limit of the 5-HT was decreased to 3.21 nM in the linear range of 5–500 nM, which was lower than that of the nano sensor without magnetic field. The clinical 5-HT samples were also been accurately detected, indicating a positive application potential of the as-prepared magnetic-mediated nano sensor. All these results reveal the high sensitivity and practicality of the as-prepared magnetic-mediated nano sensor and provide a new method for neurotransmitter diseases diagnosis.

5-AzaCytidine Promotes Somatic Embryogenesis of Taxodium Hybrid ‘Zhongshanshan’ by Regulating Redox Homeostasis

Guoying Yuan,Dan Wang,Chaoguang Yu,Jianfeng Hua,Yunlong Yin,Tingting Chen

DNA methylation plays a crucial role in regulating the developmental processes of plants. Particularly, it is closely associated with the development of embryogenic cells (EC) and somatic embryos (SE). In this study, we investigated the effects of 5-azaCytidine (5-azaC) treatment on somatic embryogenesis proliferation and maturation ofTaxodiumhybrid ‘zhongshanshan’. The results showed that the callus proliferation was inhibited when the concentration of 5-azaC exceeded 30 μM, while treatment with 5 μM 5-azaC improved the maturation rate and expedited the process of SE formation. It was also noted that 5-azaC influenced somatic embryogenesis during the second week of embryo induction, substantially enhancing the maturation rate of somatic embryos and the germination rate ofTaxodiumhybrid ‘zhongshanshan’. Furthermore, the analysis revealed that treatment with 5-azaC resulted in elevated levels of H2O2, SOD, POD, and AsA during the cotyledonary embryo period inTaxodiumhybrid ‘zhongshanshan’, indicating its potential to promote somatic embryogenesis by regulating redox homeostasis. This study concluded that 5-azaC could improve the efficiency of somatic embryogenesis inTaxodiumhybrid ‘zhongshanshan’, as well as provide a solid foundation for investigating the effects of 5-azaC on somatic embryogenesis in other conifer species.

Catalytic Pyrolysis of Cellulose Biomass to Aromatic Hydrocarbons Using Modified HZSM-5 Zeolite

Jian Li,Laizhi Sun,Derun Hua,Xinning Lu,Dandan Yang,Zhiying Wu

Gallium-modified Zeolite Socony Mobil-5 (ZSM-5) zeolites were synthesized using wetness impregnation and hydrothermal synthesis methods. The structural and acidic properties of the zeolites were characterized through an analytical instrument, which demonstrated that Gallium-modified HZSM-5 zeolites retain the Mobil five instructure (MFI) framework structure, but exhibit a reduction in Brønsted acid sites and a decrease in micropore size. The catalytic performance of these zeolites in the pyrolysis of cellulose biomass and polyethylene was tested. Compared with HZSM-5, Ga-modified HZSM-5 zeolites considerably increased monoaromatic yields while reducing alkanes production. In particular, gallium-impregnated HZSM-5 increased the monoaromatic yield from 37.6% for ZSM-5 to 43.2%, while hydrothermal synthesized Ga-HMFI reduced polyaromatic and alkane yields from 6.6% and 24.6% for HZSM-5 to 2.9% and 11.4%, respectively. These results indicated that Ga-modified HZSM-5 zeolites can improve the synergy between cellulose-derived oxygenates and polyethylene-derived olefins, enhancing the yield of petrochemical hydrocarbons compared to that predicted by theoretical calculations.

Preparation, characterization, and anticancer activity evaluation of Ganoderma lucidum polysaccharide/5-fluorouracil conjugate

Wang Ying,Yang YunXia,Zhu Daliang,Zhang Hongmei,Wang Yanqing

Polysaccharide-based drug delivery systems have gained significant attention due to their biocompatibility and potential for targeted therapy. In this study, we utilized Ganoderma lucidum polysaccharides (GLP) as a macromolecular carrier to synthesize polysaccharide drug conjugates by forming ester bonds with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) derivatives (5-FUAC). This not only improves the solubility and stability of 5-FU but also enhances its targeted delivery to tumor tissues, potentially reducing systemic toxicity. Utilizing Ganoderma lucidum polysaccharides (GLP) as a macromolecular carrier, we successfully synthesized GLP-5-FU conjugates by forming ester bonds with 5-fluorouracil derivatives (5-FUAC). These conjugates were then characterized using spectrum analysis technologies. The drug loading capacities of 5-FU in the GLP-5-FU conjugates were found to be approximately 4.7%. Morphological observations revealed that the GLP-5-FU conjugates had a regular spherical shape. In terms of drug release, 5-FU was found to be released faster at pH 6.8 compared to pH 7.4. To investigate the dynamic viscoelastic behavior of GLP and GLP-5-FU conjugates in water, dynamic rheology analysis was conducted. In terms of cytotoxicity, the GLP-5-FU conjugates exhibited greater inhibition of proliferation compared to 5-FU and GLP alone in HeLa, 786-O, and SKOV3 cells. Furthermore, the GLP-5-FU conjugates showed lower cytotoxicity to 293A cells. Graphical

Multiple Metabolic Strategies for Green and Efficient 5-Hydroxytryptamine Biosynthesis in Escherichia coli

Weiwei Liu,Zichen Yu,Zhichao Chen,Ling Ma,Yanghao Liu,Zhen Zhang,Qingyang Xu

5-Hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), also known as serotonin, plays a critical role in mood regulation, insomnia treatment, and free radical scavenging. Currently, 5-HT production primarily relies on plant extraction, which is challenged by limited raw materials and environmental concerns, emphasizing the need for innovative green production strategies. In this study, we explored a high-performance producer for biosynthesizing 5-HT in Escherichia coli. First, we constructed and optimized the 5-HT biosynthetic pathway to convert L-tryptophan (l-Trp) to 5-HT, avoiding the accumulation of tryptamine and 5-hydroxytryptophan. Moreover, precursor enrichment eliminated the need for l-Trp supplementation and dynamic downregulation of pyruvate kinase balanced growth and production. Further, the metabolic flux between the tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4) module and the hydroxylation-decarboxylation module was optimized, reducing l-Trp accumulation. A novel “GXAA” system was implemented to enhance intracellular NAD(P)H supply, including (1) expression of gdhbsu (glucose dehydrogenase) from Bacillus subtilis, gapXfbr (mutated glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase) from Corynebacterium glutamicum, and pntAB (pyridine nucleotide transhydrogenase); (2) knockout of ldhA (lactate dehydrogenase). Finally, transcriptomic analysis under high-5-HT stress revealed a potential 5-HT transporter, YhjX. The resulting strain WW15 produced 15.5 g/L 5-HT and a yield of 0.063 g/g glucose through a two-stage fed-batch fermentation, representing the highest titer and yield reported to date.

Preparation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural from cellulose catalyzed by mixed acid: optimization and kinetics

Jia Yu,Liang Xuanyu,Tao Hongge,Chen Binglin,He Chao,Jiao Youzhou,Xu Guizhuan

5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is an important platform compound that can be used to synthesize drugs, fine chemicals, fuels, and biodegradable plastics. Synthesis of HMF from cellulose is a key step in the production of high-value-added chemicals and fuels from renewable cellulosic biomass. Herein, a cheap way to produce HMF from cellulose was found in this study. Combination of inexpensive metal salts and inorganic acids shows exciting catalytic efficiency in tetrahydrofuran (THF)/H 2 O system. In this article, the effects of key factors such as water/organic solvent ratio, metal salt type, and concentration on the synthesis of HMF from cellulose were investigated. A maximum HMF yield of 46.5% was obtained with high substrate loading (50 g/L) when H 2 SO 4 and Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 was used as mixed acid catalysts. Reaction kinetics experiments revealed that combination of H 2 SO 4 and Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 could effectively reduce the activation energy of cellulose hydrolysis, glucose isomerization, and fructose dehydration compared to the single H 2 SO 4 and single Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 system. Fortunately, the purity of HMF after separation and purification was up to 98.3%, and both the solvent and the extractant can be recycled. A promising strategy is provided for HMF production from cellulose over simple catalysts.

Acoustic Enhancement Performance of Hierarchical ZSM-5 Zeolites with Different Si/Al Ratios

Mingbo Guo,Yijun Wang,Lei Zhang,Junran Lu,Chang Gong,Wanning Zhang,Yuxi Fang,Xinyuan Zhu,Shunai Che

Size restrictions pose increasing challenges to the acoustic performance of microspeakers in portable devices as the size of such devices, and thus the back volume of microspeakers, continues to shrink. Filling the back volume with porous materials, such as zeolites, has been proved to be an effective strategy for improving acoustic performance. In this work, hierarchically structured ZSM-5 zeolites with abundant mesopores were synthesized via the traditional hydrothermal method by adjusting the SiO2/Al2O3ratios (SAR), and their pore structures and morphologies were systematically investigated. Their acoustic enhancement performance was evaluated using a commercial microspeaker. Based on their acoustic properties, the influence of pore structure on acoustic performance was further studied. The ZSM-5 zeolite sample with an SAR of 614, which exhibited the maximum mesopore volume, demonstrated exceptional acoustic enhancement performance with a resonance offset of 199.53 Hz and an enhanced sound pressure level of 4.74 dB at 500 Hz. The presence of mesopores significantly facilitates diffusion within the zeolite crystals, enabling air molecules to access more micropores for efficient sorption–desorption processes during diaphragm vibration in microspeakers. Furthermore, supermicropores were found to contribute to improved performance by adsorbing air molecules during diaphragm vibration, complementing the role of micropores.

Partial Oxidation of Methane to Acetic Acid with Oxygen Using AuPd/ZSM-5

Xu Li,Guodong Qi,Richard J. Lewis,Mark J. Howard,Barry A. Murrer,Brian Harrison,David J. Morgan,Christopher J. Kiely,Qian He,Thomas E. Davies,David J. Willock,Michael Bowker,Jingxian Cao,Feng Deng,Jun Xu,Graham J. Hutchings

The selective oxidation of methane to form methanol and acetic acid has been studied using AuPd nanoparticles supported on the zeolite H-ZSM-5 in water at 240 °C using molecular oxygen as the terminal oxidant in the absence of any added coreductant. The addition of Pd to Au/ZSM-5 significantly increases the selectivity to acetic acid to levels approaching almost complete selectivity within the oxygenated products. However, we observe that the reaction conditions employed lead to the corrosion of the stainless-steel components of the autoclave reactor and also leaching of iron from the ZSM-5 zeolite, and hence the AuPd nanoparticles, on reaction, become coated or partially coated with an oxidic Fe shell. The presence of the oxidized iron coating hinders nanoparticle agglomeration preventing deactivation of the AuPd/ZSM-5 catalyst but does not adversely affect the observed catalysis.
