Methane, as the second most significant greenhouse gas globally, necessitates highly sensitive and rapid detection technologies for environmental protection. To take full advantage of lab-on-fiber gas sensing technology, this paper presents an optical fiber CH 4 sensor based on a functionalized Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI). The sensor consists of a single-mode fiber (SMF), a hollow-core capillary (HCC), and a ZIF-8/Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) composite sensing membrane. Among them, ZIF-8 is synthesized via a room-temperature solvothermal method, with characterization data confirming its successful preparation. And the composite film is formed by uniformly mixing ZIF-8 with PDMS prepolymer and a crosslinking agent, followed by dip-coating onto HCC end face. The high specific surface area of ZIF-8 allows CH 4 molecules to be adsorbed onto its internal surface through van der Waals forces, leading to a change in the refractive index of the composite membrane and enabling highly sensitive CH 4 detection. The influence of ZIF-8 content on sensor performance is systematically investigated. Experimental results indicate that at a ZIF-8 content of 3 wt%, the sensor sensitivity is 12.95 pm/ppm within the methane concentration range of 0–400 ppm. Furthermore, the sensor exhibits response and recovery times of 1 min and 4 min, respectively, along with excellent reproducibility and stability. These results demonstrate that the proposed sensor achieves comprehensive sensing performance, featuring high sensitivity, rapid response/recovery, and excellent repeatability. It provides an effective solution for high-performance methane sensing and offers a new strategy for gas-oriented lab-on-fiber technology.

ZIF-8 membranes have emerged as a promising alternative to energy-intensive cryogenic distillation for propylene/propane (C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 ) separation. However, the stability of ZIF-8 membranes fabricated on low-cost polymer supports is often compromised by the intrinsic mismatch between the mechanical flexibility of the polymer substrate and the brittle nature of the ZIF-8 layer. Herein, we report a dual-silane locking strategy to construct dense, highly intergrown ZIF-8 membranes on commercial polysulfone supports. By engineering a silanol- and amine-functionalized interfacial layer, strong interfacial adhesion is achieved while simultaneously regulating ZIF-8 nucleation and growth, leading to continuous, crack-free membranes with tightly interpenetrated grains. The resulting membranes exhibit a C 3 H 6 permeance of 152 GPU and a C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 separation factor of 30.1 at 25 °C and 1 bar, maintaining stable separation performance over 108 h of continuous operation. Moreover, the membranes demonstrate excellent mechanical flexibility and resistance to deformation, underscoring their potential for scalable and industrially viable olefin/paraffin separation.

Constructing porous carbon adsorbents with SF 6 -matched ultramicropores is an effective route for recovering SF 6 from nitrogen-rich gas streams. Herein, hemin was introduced into ZIF-8 precursors to regulate pyrolysis-induced pore evolution and produce Fe,N-containing porous carbons without corrosive KOH activation. The optimized Fe,N-C-1000 displayed a large BET surface area of 1772.60 m 2 ·g −1 along with abundant ultramicropores mainly distributed at 0.5–0.65 nm, providing suitable confined spaces for adsorption of SF 6 . The Fe,N-C-1000 delivered an SF 6 adsorption capacity of 4.58 mmol·g −1 and an IAST selectivity of 222 at 298 K and 1.0 bar. Fixed-bed breakthrough tests verified the preferential retention of SF 6 over N 2 , as well as good regenerability and cycling stability. Structure-performance analysis suggests that the improved separation performance is mainly governed by hemin-directed ultramicropore formation, while the Fe/N-containing surface environment contributes additionally to SF 6 affinity. DFT calculations further support stronger SF 6 interaction with the Fe,N-C model than with the undoped carbon model. These results demonstrate that hemin-assisted pyrolysis provides a feasible KOH-free strategy for constructing MOF-derived ultramicroporous carbons for the capture and recovery of SF 6 .

In pulpitis treatment, vital pulp therapy (VPT) aims to preserve pulp vitality and promote dentin regeneration. However, conventional pulp-capping materials usually lack reparative dentin-inducing activity and fail to regulate the local immune microenvironment effectively. In this work, valproic acid (VPA)-loaded zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanocomposites (VPA@ ZIF-8 NPs) were designed to achieve high VPA loading capacity, excellent encapsulation efficiency, and sustained and pH-responsive VPA release kinetics. Using a VPA-equivalent (VPA-eq) dosing strategy, we systematically evaluated its biocompatibility, antimicrobial properties, immunomodulatory effects, and dentin-regenerative potential across multiple methods. In vitro studies showed that when treated with VPA@ZIF-8 NPs, stem cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHEDs) exhibited enhanced proliferation, migration, and mineralization ability, and oral opportunistic pathogens Veillonella parvula and Streptococcus mutans showed suppressed growth and biofilm formation activities. Further, macrophage polarization assays revealed that VPA@ZIF-8 NPs promoted the M2-like polarization in THP-1 cells, indicating an anti-inflammatory function. Notably, the BMP2/SMAD1/RUNX2 pathway was activated by VPA@ZIF-8 NPs in the SHEDs. In vivo, local VPA@ZIF-8 NP application recapitulated the macrophage M2-like polarization and BMP2/SMAD1/RUNX2 pathway activation phenotype and contributed to marked reparative dentin bridge formation in a pulp exposure rat model. In summary, the multifunctional VPA@ZIF-8 NPs integrate biosafety, antibacterial, immunomodulatory, and dentin-regenerative-inducing capabilities, providing a promising and integrated strategy for vital pulp therapy against pulpitis.

The fabrication of polymer-supported metal-organic framework (MOF) membranes is a promising approach for efficient C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 separation. However, the main obstacles to construct MOF layers are low nucleation density at substrate interface and uncontrolled crystal growth, which hinders the concurrent attainment of a defect-free structure and an ultrathin separation layer. Herein, we report a synergistic strategy combining coordination anchoring with interfacial-epitaxial coupled (IEC) growth. Initially, a polyacrylic acid (PAA) functional layer was introduced onto the substrate surface to achieve coordination anchoring of Zn 2+ ions. Subsequently, an asymmetric concentration gradient of reactants was established at the surface of substrate through contra-diffusion growth, confining the nucleation of ZIF-8 crystals strictly to the interfacial region. This process culminated in in-situ growth in a high-concentration ligand environment, promoting epitaxial crystal growth and repairing intercrystalline microdefects, thereby enhancing the crystallinity and structural order of the MOF layer. The optimized membrane achieved a high C 3 H 6 permeance of 417.1 GPU with a C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 selectivity of 36.3 for equimolar C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 mixtures, along with excellent thermal stability, pressure resistance, and long-term operational stability. This work highlights the synergistic regulation of MOF growth via confined nucleation and interfacial engineering and develops a novel strategy for the controlled fabrication of defect-free MOF membranes on flexible substrates.

Benzene, as a ubiquitous and carcinogenic volatile organic compound (VOC), presents substantial health risks through inhalation exposure from ambient indoor environments and cigarette mainstream smoke, necessitating the development of advanced adsorbent materials. Herein, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8/cellulose acetate (ZIF-8/CA) composite porous carbon materials were synthesized via a dual emulsion-solvent evaporation method coupled with subsequent high-temperature carbonization. Systematic studies were conducted to evaluate the effects of ZIF-8/CA mass ratios on the microstructure, pore architecture, and the benzene adsorption property. The results of the relevant characterizations revealed that the composite prepared at a 4/6 mass ratio exhibited an excellent BET specific surface area with the highest value of 1380 m 2 /g and mesopore volume of 0.77 cm 3 /g, alongside a well-defined hierarchical pore network spanning microporous, mesoporous, and macroporous regimes. Dynamic benzene vapor adsorption tests demonstrated that this optimized formulation achieved a dynamic saturation adsorption capacity of 235.0 mg/g. Kinetic analysis employing the Apiratikul-Chu and Adams-Bohart models yielded high correlation coefficients, indicating that benzene adsorption was governed by surface adsorption and mass‑transfer mechanisms. When applied in cigarette mainstream smoke purification, the ZIF-8/CA composite exhibited a benzene removal efficiency of 49.0%, significantly outperforming the ZIF-8/polylactic acid (PLA) composite (20.7%). This enhanced efficacy stemmed from the cooperative interplay between the hierarchical porosity and enhanced π-π stacking interactions. This work underscores the ZIF‑8/CA composite porous carbon as a promising candidate for benzene abatement, with potential applications in cigarette filter modification and indoor air purification.

Conventional air filtration media struggle to simultaneously address secondary biological pollution, the efficiency-permeability trade-off, and the environmental burden associated with disposable polymer filters. Direct blending of agglomerated or dense fillers can destabilize the electrospinning jet, disrupting the fiber network and increasing airflow resistance. In this study, biodegradable PLA nanofibers were combined with eugenol-loaded ZIF-8 nanoparticles to construct an antibacterial air filtration membrane. Prepared through an aqueous route, ZIF-8 served a dual function by regulating the architecture of the fibrous network and acting as a microporous reservoir for the natural antibacterial molecule eugenol. Comparison of pristine PLA, PLA/ZIF-8, and PLA/EUG@ZIF-8 membranes clarified each component's contribution. Pristine PLA provided a biodegradable fibrous matrix but showed inadequate filtration and negligible antibacterial activity. The incorporation of ZIF-8 optimized membrane morphology, enhanced particle capture, and imparted moderate bacterial inhibition. Notably, confinement of eugenol within ZIF-8 pores further enhanced antibacterial activity without disrupting the optimized membrane structure or air permeability. The PLA/EUG@ZIF-8 membrane delivered PM0.3, PM1.0, and PM2.5 filtration efficiencies of 99.62%, 99.99%, and 99.99%, respectively, with a low pressure drop of 69 Pa and a maximum quality factor of 0.1335 Pa⁻¹ . The composite also achieved near-complete inhibition of Escherichia coli (99.74%) and Staphylococcus aureus (99.48%). Numerical simulations showed a filtration trend consistent with the experimental results, indicating that the improved performance was mainly associatedwith the optimized fiber-pore structure rather than simple membrane densification. Thus, MOF-mediated natural antibacterials effectively fabricate biodegradable filters with excellent PM capture, low resistance, and strong antibacterial activity, promoting eco-friendly membranes.

Background Malondialdehyde (MDA) is a pivotal oxidative stress biomarker implicated in cardiovascular diseases, neurodegeneration, and cancer; however, its trace quantification in complex biological matrices remains analytically daunting. Photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing offers inherently low background noise and exceptional sensitivity for trace bioanalysis. Nevertheless, efficiently translating molecular recognition into amplified PEC signals remains a challenge. Results We report a nanoconfinement-mediated PEC interface that integrates covalent molecular conjugation with plasmonic amplification within a crystalline matrix scaffold. Within this nanoconfined environment, localized Au nanoparticles serve as plasmonic amplifiers that anchor 4-aminothiophenol (4-ATP) receptors. Upon MDA recognition, the optimized sensor exhibits dual linear detection ranges spanning 0.001 to 1.0 nmol L −1 ( R 1 2 = 0.9928) and 1.0 to 1000 nmol L −1 ( R 2 2 = 0.9992), yielding an ultralow detection limit of 0.3 pmol L −1 . Significance The confined Schiff-base reaction between 4-ATP and MDA generates an interfacial reaction product, leading to a new absorption band at approximately 450 nm and modulation of the Au LSPR band. This change is mainly attributed to the altered local dielectric environment around Au NPs. Wavelength-dependent operando transient photovoltage spectroscopy (TPV) provides mechanistic evidence that plasmon-driven hot-carrier injection augments PEC signal output. Overall, this work establishes an interface-engineering paradigm that integrates molecular conjugation with plasmonic coupling, offering a promising blueprint for the PEC detection of small-molecule biomarkers.

A multifunctional Myr@ZIF-8 nanoplatform was developed for dentin bonding. • Myr@ZIF-8 exhibited pH-responsive release of myricetin and Zn²⁺. • Myr@ZIF-8 enhanced antibiofilm activity against Streptococcus mutans . • Myr@ZIF-8 stabilized dentin collagen and suppressed MMP activity. • The modified adhesive significantly improved dentin bonding durability. Objectives This study aimed to develop a myricetin-loaded ZIF-8 (Myr@ZIF-8)-modified universal adhesive with antibacterial, collagen-stabilizing, and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-inhibitory properties to improve bonding durability. Methods Myr@ZIF-8 nanoparticles were synthesized and characterized. Myr loading efficiency, drug loading, and pH-responsive release were evaluated. Myr@ZIF-8 was incorporated into a universal adhesive at 2.5–10 wt%, and the optimal concentration was selected according to degree of conversion, dentin wettability, and antibiofilm activity. Dentin collagen stability, MMP-mediated gelatinolytic activity, microtensile bond strength (μTBS), interfacial nanoleakage, interfacial mechanical properties, and in vitro cytocompatibility were evaluated. Short-term systemic toxicity was preliminarily assessed by oral gavage of cured adhesive extracts. Molecular docking was performed to investigate potential interactions between myricetin and collagen, MMP-2, and MMP-9. Results Myr@ZIF-8 exhibited a Myr loading efficiency of 50.72%, drug loading of 50.36%, and pH-responsive release. The adhesive containing 5 wt% Myr@ZIF-8 showed the best overall performance, including enhanced antibiofilm activity, improved collagen stability, and reduced MMP-mediated gelatinolytic activity. Incorporation of 5 wt% Myr@ZIF-8 increased immediate μTBS from 22.79 MPa to 32.07 MPa and aged μTBS after 10,000 thermocycles from 13.91 MPa to 27.99 MPa. Molecular docking predicted potential interactions between myricetin and collagen, MMP-2, and MMP-9. The modified adhesive showed acceptable in vitro cytocompatibility, with no obvious short-term systemic toxicity after oral gavage of cured adhesive extracts. Significance These findings demonstrate that Myr@ZIF-8 functions as a multifunctional bioactive nanoplatform and represents a promising strategy for improving bonding durability. In this study, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) was introduced as an additive to enable the hydrothermal synthesis of glucose-derived carbon spheres under challenging conditions: high glucose concentration (up to 4 M, representing the upper limit for sphere formation) and short reaction time (2 h). The effects of ZIF-8 dosage, hydrothermal time, glucose concentration and polyacrylic acid sodium (PAAS) on the morphology of carbon spheres were investigated in detail. Results show that ZIF-8 not only promotes the formation of uniform carbon spheres but also significantly increases the apparent yield—even at 4 M glucose. Notably, while carbon spheres can be formed at glucose concentrations as high as 4 M, the optimal electrochemical performance was achieved at 3 M glucose, under fixed hydrothermal volume of 40 mL with 0.1 g ZIF-8, 2 h reaction time, and 24 mg PAAS. After KOH activation (KOH: carbon = 1:1), the resulting material exhibited a high specific surface area (1617 m 2 /g), large pore volume (1.00 cm 3 /g), average pore size of 2.48 nm, and strong microporosity (94.9% contribution). It delivered a specific capacitance of 171.5 F/g at 0.5 A/g and retained 85.14% of its capacity after 10,000 cycles at 2 A/g. This work demonstrates that ZIF-8-assisted hydrothermal carbonization is an effective strategy to increase the apparent yield of carbon sphere, and provides a feasible pathway for expanding the application of glucose-derived hydrothermal carbon spheres.

The analysis of highly degraded DNA samples remains a significant challenge in forensic genetics. Multi-InDel present several advantages—including high polymorphisms, short amplicons, low mutation rates, and the absence of stutter artifacts—making it an ideal genetic marker for genotyping highly degraded samples. Conventional 5-dye systems commonly used for highly degraded samples often accommodate only a limited number of loci because of the requirement for short amplicons and the restricted number of fluorescent channels. This constraint reduces the forensic efficacy of the system, particularly in paternity testing involving highly degraded samples. As a validated technology, 8-dye fluorescence technology enables the inclusion of more loci with short amplicons and shows considerable promise as an effective tool for the forensic analysis of highly degraded samples. This study introduces an 8-dye Multi-InDel panel capable of simultaneously detecting 28 autosomal Multi-InDel loci. All Multi-InDel loci were engineered to yield amplicons not more than 125 bp in length to enhance compatibility with highly degraded samples. Full genotyping profiles were successfully obtained from samples containing as little as 62.5 pg of DNA. Notably, even after 100 minutes of thermal degradation at 100°C, the 28 Multi-InDel panel retained an allele detection rate of 100%, whereas the commercial STR kit detected only 26.2% of alleles. The system demonstrated excellent forensic efficiency, with a cumulative matching probability (CMP) of 2.3292× 10 -18 and a cumulative probability of exclusion (CPE) of 0.9999669. The mean cumulative paternity index (CPI) across the 49 parent-offspring trios was 2.18 × 10⁷, and all 2,352 Mendelian inconsistent trios were correctly excluded from paternity. Taken together, our results demonstrate that the 28 Multi-InDel panel performed in full agreement with the Scientific Working Group on DNA Analysis Methods (SWGDAM) guidelines, and could be a practical, robust, and efficient strategy for the forensic identification of highly degraded samples.

Immunotherapy has attracted widespread attention as a new tumour treatment method. Because of the low response rate, immunotherapy is only effective for some patients. With the continuous exploration of tumour immunity, the concept of immunogenic cell death (ICD) has brought new vitality to many cancer treatment methods, including chemotherapy. However, the immune effect of ICD induced by chemotherapy is often influenced by immune cell types, the tumour microenvironment, and other factors. Based on this, we constructed a hybrid nano-platform based on ZIF-8 to realise chemo-immunotherapy for tumour treatment by loading the chemotherapy drug doxorubicin (DOX), the indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO) inhibitor 1-methyltryptophan (1MT), and the immune adjuvant CpG. In order to ensure the smooth arrival of the nanoparticles at the tumour site, carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) was introduced for surface modification to enhance the stability of the nanoparticles in vivo. The hybrid nano-platform not only successfully induced ICD in tumour cells but also achieved an 85.6% inhibition rate in the 4T1 tumour model, proving its excellent tumour-killing ability. In conclusion, the successful construction of the hybrid nano-platform provides a new idea and method for multi-modal combined therapy of tumours.
