Enhanced antibacterial activity of montmorillonite through tetradecyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride intercalation

Yu Taotao,Yang Feng,Liu Changchun,Xu Shirong,Chen Xi,Sun Hong,Ogino Kenji

In this study, tetradecyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride (TDBAC)-modified montmorillonite (TDBAC-MMT) was successfully synthesized via ion exchange, and its structural characteristics and antibacterial activity were systematically investigated. Multiple characterization methods confirmed the effective intercalation of TDBAC into montmorillonite (MMT): X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed significant structural reconstruction, attributed to the steric hindrance of the benzyl group and hydrophobic interactions of alkyl chains; scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed reduced agglomeration and a looser, more porous surface morphology in TDBAC-MMT, increasing the effective surface area; Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) identified characteristic peaks at 1468 cm −1 (benzyl C–H bending vibration) and 2927 cm −1 (alkyl C–H stretching vibration), verifying the incorporation of organic components; and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) reflected the modified thermal stability of the composite. Antibacterial tests demonstrated potent activity for TDBAC-MMT, showing a 16.01 mm inhibition zone and a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 2 mg/mL against Escherichia coli , a 18.04 mm inhibition zone and a MIC of 0.5 mg/mL against Staphylococcus aureus . When 0.5% TDBAC-MMT was added to latex paint, the antibacterial rate against both E. coli and S. aureus  reached 99.9%. Additionally, after 28 days of mold resistance testing, latex paint containing 0.5% TDBAC-MMT maintained a grade of 0 (no mold growth), indicating excellent mold resistance. This study provides a promising approach for the development of high-performance antibacterial and mold-resistant materials.

A 2D-2D Ti3CN@BiOCl heterojunction and its application in photodetection

Qin Mingli,He Mingqi,Hou Jiahui,Zhang Ruijun,Ai Jiale,Lao Xuanhao,Zhao Yiming,Kuklin Artem V.,Ågren Hans,Gao Lingfeng,Huang Youju

Bismuth oxychloride (BiOCl) has been prevalently applied in UV-photodetection due to its wide band gap. However, further application is hindered by its low light utilization efficiency and fast carrier recombination. In this work, a 2D-2D Ti 3 CN@BiOCl heterojunction was constructed to broaden the light absorption and increase the carrier mobility. A small amount of hole scavengers was utilized to suppress the carrier recombination. According to DFT calculations, the electron transfer occurs from MXene to BiOCl and is subsequently converted into an electrical signal. The photo-response performance of Ti 3 CN@BiOCl was systematically investigated, where an optimized photocurrent density as high as 47.17 µA∙cm − 2 and a photoresponsivity of 12.50 mA/W could be achieved. Furthermore, Ti 3 CN@BiOCl was found to exhibit a broad-band and fast response (~ 0.04 s), and excellent long-term stability (~ 0.005% decrement for each cycle). This work highlights promising prospects of Ti 3 CN@BiOCl heterojunctions for use in photodetection, which also hold great potential for other types of optoelectronic devices.

Selective electrochemical methanol to formate conversion via direct CHO hydroxylation on Ptδ+-Ptδ– dipoles

Cheng Ke,Li Hao,Zhou Bing,Pei Haopeng,Hu Lufa,Zhao Long,Zou Xingyue,Wang Jiaxian,Zheng Qian,Zhao Rui,Zhang Yan,Liu Anping,Wu Zewen,Zhan Guangming,Guo Mingming,Zhang Lizhi

The electrochemical upgrading of methanol to formate is constrained by CO poisoning from *CHO intermediate dehydrogenation, hindering its industrial application. Herein, we report that engineering atomically polarized Pt δ+ -Pt δ– dipoles on Ti felt achieves a formate Faradaic efficiency of 99% at +0.9 V vs . RHE, which is better than that of commercial Pt/C (62%). Moreover, a formate production rate of 945 mmol g Pt –1 h –1 is achieved with stable performance for more than 5 days at 100 mA cm –2 . These dipoles comprise spatially adjacent electron-deficient Pt δ+ bonded to lattice O and electron-rich Pt δ– coordinated to unsaturated Ti atoms working synergistically. The Pt δ+ site dehydrogenates CH 3 OH to *CHO, which adsorbs across the dipole in a side-on Pt δ+ –OHC–Pt δ– bridging configuration. Within this configuration, Pt δ– donates electrons via d → π * backdonation to the π * antibonding orbital of *CHO, steering its direct hydroxylation and generating electrostatic repulsion for rapid HCOOH desorption. This strategy reduces environmental impact by 88% and carbon emissions by 11% relative to conventional thermal routes, demonstrating the potential of dipole engineering for C 1 electrochemistry.

Dynamic hydroxyl mediated charge buffering stabilizes high valence ruthenium edge sites for acidic water oxidation

Yan Tianqing,Xue Kang,Zhang Shishi,Wang Huayang,Huang Zhen-Feng,Ai Minhua,Gao Ruijie,Shi Chengxiang,Mi Wanliang,Zhang Xiangwen,Pan Lun,Zou Ji-Jun

High valence metal species are essential for driving electrocatalytic acidic water oxidation, but suffer from intrinsic thermodynamic instability. This activity-stability paradox is particularly severe for ruthenium-based catalysts, where highly active Ru(>IV) species are also precursors for rapid dissolution. Here we show that a cooperative host-guest architecture circumvents this trade-off through dynamic, hydroxyl-mediated charge buffering. By anchoring isolated ruthenium atoms at β-MnO 2 edge sites, we demonstrate that host-derived surface hydroxyls govern both kinetics and robustness. These hydroxyls optimize intermediate binding to facilitate ideal O-O coupling, accelerating the reaction. Concurrently, the specific coordination environment allows the manganese host to reversibly accommodate excess oxidative charge, preventing irreversible structural degradation and ruthenium dissolution. The resulting Ru 0.03 Mn 0.97 O 2 catalyst achieves a mass activity 223-fold higher than RuO 2 and increases the stability number by three orders of magnitude. As an anode in a proton exchange membrane electrolyzer, it sustains an industrial-level current density of 1 A cm −2 for over 1000 h, comparing favorably to IrO 2 while reducing precious metal usage by 80%.

Light-independent antimicrobial and acaricidal Ag/TiO₂ exhibited reduced allergenicity

Liu Xiaoyu,Sun Jie,Galluzzi Massimiliano,Zhong Huanqiong,Zhou Zhenfu,Chen Shiguo

Pathogenic microbes and house dust mites (HDM) are critical factors associated with severe asthma and pathogenic infections that severely threaten human health worldwide. Therefore, it is urgent to develop biocide alternatives to inactivate pathogenic microbes and HDM, and to reduce immunogenicity of HMD. Silver (Ag)/titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) nanoparticle (ATN) exhibits a significant synergistic enhancement effect due to destructive reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation under UV irradiation, while its antimicrobial and acaricidal activities and related action mechanisms without light irradiation are still unclear. Herein, a water-dispersible ATN was prepared facilely by a photocatalytic reduction process. ATN exhibited improved antimicrobial activity due to synergistic antimicrobial effect of Ag and TiO 2 based on destructive nitric oxide (NO) generation in the absence of light. And ATN exhibited good acaricidal activity against HDM due to oxidative stress-induced mitochondrial disorder, lysosome swelling and rupture arising from NO generation. Especially, ATN can effectively reduce immunogenic Dermatophagoides farinae group 1 (Der f 1) and Dermatophagoides farinae group 2 (Der f 2). The work proposes an alternative approach to develop biocide alternatives and acaricidal materials, and it can help readers better comprehension of synergistically enhanced antimicrobial and acaricidal activities and relative action mechanisms of meta doped TiO 2 nanoparticles.

Synthesis of Bifunctional Mesoporous MoO3/ZrO2 Catalyst for the Degradation of Tetracyclin

Chang Fei,Shen Min,Ruan Yunfei,Zhou Quan

In this paper, bifunctional mesoporous MoO 3 /ZrO 2 composite was prepared by co-precipitation method using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as template agent for the photodegradation of tetracyclines (TCs). In order to study the catalyst performances, catalyst was characterized via XRD, Raman, SEM, TEM, BET, and Py-IR. Results showing that the catalyst is a bifunctional acid ( B and L) mesoporous catalyst with the MoO 3 monolayer embedded in the ZrO 2 , which specific surface area (SSA) is 69.0318 m 2 /g and an average pore size is 11.6948 nm. In order to study the degradation target of the MoO 3 / ZrO 2 for TCs, photodegradation of Isotope-labeled [2H 6 ]-TC and [2H 3 ]-DOX was detected by HPLC-MS. The results showed that the target of TC and DOX was concentrated on C4 of the A ring. The difference was that TC underwent oxidative dehydrogenation of α-dimethylamino group at the C4 position of the A ring, while DOX was demethylated at the C4 of the A ring, moreover, the-NH 2 of the C1 and the -OH of C3 formed a five-membered ring structure and removed H 2 O.

Triple-functional FeCl3-crosslinked carbon aerogel: synchronous strengthening, ultra-broadband wave absorption, and thermal insulation

Dong Xue,Li Da-Wei,Zhou Qin-Zhuo,Jin Wei-Long,Miao Jin-Gen

Electromagnetic pollution poses growing threats to electronic equipment, data security, and human health, yet developing lightweight absorbers that simultaneously achieve high mechanical strength, broadband absorption, and thermal insulation remains challenging. To address this gap, we report a triple-functional FeCl 3 -crosslinked carbon aerogel (CA-Fe) fabricated by integrating hydrazine-modified polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers into a chitosan matrix, followed by freeze-drying and carbonization. Fe 3 ⁺ serves dual roles as crosslinker and graphitization catalyst, reducing the ID/IG ratio from 2.75 (in Fe-free CA) to 2.6 and enhancing electrical conductivity. The resulting CA‐Fe achieves a compressive strength of 0.62 MPa—a 121% increase over CA—and outstanding electromagnetic wave absorption with a minimum reflection loss (RLmin) of − 61.2 dB at 3.0 mm thickness and an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 5.8 GHz. These properties stem from optimized impedance matching (Z values in the 0.8–1.2 range) facilitated by the introduction of magnetic loss, synergistic conductive networks from catalytic graphitization, and multi-polarization losses induced by structural defects and Fe/N-doping. Moreover, CA-Fe exhibits low thermal conductivity (0.049 W m −1  K −1 at 25 °C), demonstrating its potential for thermal management in aerospace electronics, stealth technology, and next-generation communication devices. This work provides a viable strategy for designing lightweight, robust, and high-efficiency multifunctional EMW absorbers.

A Thr/Ser-centered phosphate-binding triad of phosphate-binding protein SphX from Synechocystis

Lu Yiping,Wang Chongyang,Zhang Keke,Zhang Zhichao,Xu Huifang,Wu Danni,Zhao Kun,Ma Honglei,Lu Xuefeng

Coordinating phosphate acquisition with overall nutritional status is critical for cyanobacterial survival in oligotrophic environments, yet the molecular basis for substrate selectivity in phosphate-binding proteins (PBPs) remains incompletely understood. Here we reveal two evolutionarily distinct PBP architectures in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 through integrative structural and biochemical analyses. High-resolution crystal structures (1.76–1.9 Å) of PstS1 and SphX bound to inorganic phosphate (Pi) demonstrate that D-type PBPs utilize a conserved aspartate-mediated low-barrier hydrogen bond (LBHB) for high-affinity Pi binding (nanomolar Kd), whereas S-type SphX employs a previously uncharacterized Asp-Arg-Thr catalytic triad with reduced affinity (micromolar Kd). Despite forming comparable hydrogen bonding networks (14 versus 15 bonds), SphX exhibits 26-fold lower Pi affinity due to threonine-mediated proton acceptance replacing the LBHB mechanism. Systematic mutagenesis confirms the functional importance of each triad residue and indicates partial compensation by neighboring residues. Phylogenetic analysis demonstrates that these architectural variants are conserved across cyanobacterial lineages, representing adaptive solutions to diverse nutrient-limited environments. Our findings establish a mechanistic framework for understanding PBP functional diversification and provide molecular insights relevant to optimizing cyanobacterial productivity in biotechnology applications.

Strain‒induced spin regulation of stepped Co(111) for boosting peracetic acid magnetocatalysis

Zhang Yinqiao,Zhang Xiaona,Qin Shuhan,Liang Hao,Ma Yiming,Di Yan,Meng Wei,Zuo Sijin,Zhou Minghua

Atomic site–specific reactivity induced by the lattice distortion has garnered increasing research interest for advancing the heterogeneous catalytic conversions, owing to strain–field–tunable electronic structure of the distorted active sites. Here, we prepare the catalysts with reactive center of ferromagnetically nanoparticulate cobalt that is fully exposed by the Co(111) lattice plane with increasing strain. Such sites can boost peracetic acid (PAA) utilization under a mild magnetic field (MF, maximum 500 mT) to produce a bulk of reactive species with high ratio 93.1% R–O • for sulfamethoxazole abatement and thus attain high–effective greener decontamination for water remediations. Spin‒polarized density functional theory and experimental results collectively confirm strain–induced spin modulation at Co(111) step A sites as a critical reactivity determinant. This work integrates MF into PAA utilization and thus provides a perspective on improving the atomic economies of developing ferromagnetic nanoparticulated metal sites into water remediation in low-energy utilization route.

In Situ Combination of Covalent Organic Framework with Nonwoven for Efficient Removal of Organic Dyes

Yao Sijia,Sun Hui,Li Fengchun,Zhao Yihao,Sun Jianhui,Yu Bin

Industrial wastewater containing organic dyes has become a serious source of environmental pollution, threatening the ecological environment and human health. The adsorption method is important to treat dye wastewater because of its easy operation and high efficiency. Herein, TAP-BTCA-COF composed of benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxaldehyde (BTCA) and 1,3,5-tris (4-aminophenyl) benzene (TAP), a kind of covalent organic frameworks (COFs), was combined with viscose spunlaced nonwoven (VSN) via a simple in situ solvent–thermal synthesis to one step obtain TAP-BTCA-COF@VSN for the adsorption of organic dye in water. The results showed that TAP-BTCA-COF with a particle size of about 200 nm was uniformly distributed on the surface of VSN in a regular spherical structure. TAP-BTCA-COF@VSN exhibits versatile adsorption capacity toward both anionic dyes (congo red (CR) and methyl orange (MO)) and cationic dyes (methylene blue (MB) and rhodamine B (RhB)) in aqueous solution, with the highest efficiency for CR. The adsorption efficiency of TAP-BTCA-COF@VSN for CR reached 99.35% within 30 min when the adsorption temperature was 45 °C, the initial concentration of the dye solution was 20 mg/L, and the pH of adsorption solution was 7. After five repeated cycles of adsorption, the adsorption efficiency of TAP-BTCA-COF@VSN for CR remained 67.53%, demonstrating good reusability performance. Moreover, the adsorption mechanism of TAP-BTCA-COF@VSN for CR was better conformed to the Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order kinetics, suggesting that adsorption is predominantly governed by monolayer and chemical adsorption. This adsorption process proceeds spontaneously and is endothermic. Graphical The alternative text for this image may have been generated using AI.

Nondestructive removal of superhydrophobic coatings by an electric switch

Huang Shuangyan,Yue Qilin,Lv Jiahao,Wang Yanan,Yang Hailei,He Qisheng,Zhang Jianwen,Wei Yong,Wang Shanlin

Extensive efforts have been made to enhance the durability of superhydrophobic coatings by adhesives, yet it raises a challenge to nondestructively remove the failed coatings. Here, we propose a nondestructively removable superhydrophobic (NRS) coating by an electrical switch, inspired by the nondestructive ecdysis of snakes. To achieve this, we sequentially spray i-layer and e-layer using electro-responsively epoxy-based ionic adhesive and superhydrophobic CNT coating, respectively. Its adhesion energy to stainless steel sheets significantly declines from 2.46 kJ m −2 to 0.01 kJ m −2 (about 99.6% of removal efficiency), through the disordered-ordered switching of free ions, only applying 90 V DC voltage for 3 min. This enables it to be nondestructively removed from the substrates even after 10 recoating cycles. This work offers a common strategy to sustainably protect the metal substrates and facilitates their recycling, showing great potential in green manufacturing and surface protection for large-scale equipment.

Cold sintering of hybrid copper-iodides in transparent ceramics using dolomitization-inspired densification

Ren Yu,Dai Fu-zhi,Lu Sijia,Hu Yunfeng,Ding Qi,Si Mingming,Sun Yongsheng,Xia Zhiguo,Fan Yuchi,Jiang Wan

The non-toxic hybrid luminescent copper(I) iodides are competitive solution for environmentally sustainable applications in solar cells, lighting, and detectors. However, their susceptibility to elevated temperature and oxidation creates great hurdles for technological integration due to the lack of suitable encapsulation. Inspired by the mechanism and kinetics of dolomitization in geology, we propose a cold sintering process that enables the densification of highly transparent SrF 2 ceramic at 150 o C, which can serve as a matrix for hybrid copper iodides. The introduction of cation-rich (Sr 2+ rich) solution accelerates the rate-determining precipitation of solvated ions, which largely promotes the cold sintering process at low temperature. During the proposed cold sintering process, the synergistic effect of uniaxial pressure and temperature generates a continuous dispersion of melted hybrid copper iodide ([Cu 4 I 4 (pph 2 Et) 4 ]) throughout the thermally conductive matrix, leading to an external quantum efficiency of 50%, enhanced resistance to thermal quenching, and superior stability after 100 h of damp-heat test. By encapsulating various hybrid copper iodides, the strategy is applicable for not only full-spectrum white lighting, but also X-ray imaging.
