Biomolecules, especially enzymes, usually have poor thermal and operational stability as well as limited reuse cycles, which greatly limit their industrial practices. Inspired by the biomineralization strategy evolved by natural organisms, we suggest nanohybrid enzyme formulation by in situ encapsulating enzyme loaded functional Fe3O4@C nanoparticles with silica. By using glucose oxidase (GOD) as an example, we demonstrate that the obtained enzyme-material hybrids are featured by their significantly enhanced operational and thermal stabilities, which exhibit a relatively steady catalytic ability in a board range of 25 °C to 65 °C. Even after 4 h of incubation at 55 °C, the GOD-material composites still retain 77% of their initial activity while the native ones only retain 30%. Besides, the nanohybrids show excellent reusability because the magnetic character of the integrated Fe3O4 particles facilitates the enzyme separation and recycle. This attempt provides a valuable approach for biological improvement by using functional materials.

The development of advanced electromagnetic (EM) wave absorbers is crucial for applications in stealth technology and EM interference shielding. A major challenge in this field is achieving high absorption efficiency across a broad frequency range while maintaining lightweight and structurally robust materials. In this study, we successfully developed a precise and flexible synthesis strategy to prepare hollow C/Co/Mo2C cubes using Zn/Co(C4O4)(H2O)2 as a flexible template, which offers the advantages of simultaneous removal and easy control of metal Co content. The shell of the hollow cubes can be further optimized by changing the oxidizer content for polypyrrole (PPy). At optimum shell thickness and Co content, the C/Co/Mo2C-0.4 composites, featuring hollow but perforated structures, exhibit superior EM wave absorption properties, with a minimum reflection loss (RLmin) of −73.46 dB and an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 5.20 GHz at 2.0 mm with 15 wt% filler. Detailed investigations reveal that the hollow C/Co/Mo2C-0.4 cubes provide polarization loss, conduction loss, magnetic loss, and optimal impedance matching characteristics, significantly enhancing EM wave absorption performance. This work offers a promising strategy for assembling multiple components into a hollow architecture, offering superior molybdenum carbide microwave absorbers.

Graphical Cheap and cheerful : Nanostructured Ni 2 P−C was demonstrated as an efficient catalyst for urea electrooxidation. The material exhibited an excellent catalytic ability and was found to display improved charge-transfer kinetics towards urea electrooxidation. Nickel-based materials are a type of cost-effective catalyst for urea oxidation. Herein, we first reported nanostructured Ni 2 P−C as an efficient catalyst for urea electrooxidation. The Ni 2 P−C catalyst was prepared by a facile hydrothermal method and the structure and morphology were further characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The hexagonal crystal structure for Ni 2 P was indicated by the characteristic peaks in the XRD patterns, and lattice fringes of Ni 2 P were clearly observed in the high-resolution TEM images. The catalytic ability for urea electrooxidation was studied by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry techniques. It was found that the current density at 0.5 V was ca. 70.4 mA cm −2 , about 2.7 times higher than that of the referenced commercial nickel oxide catalyst. A good catalytic stability for urea oxidation was also obtained. A diffusion-controlled process was observed for urea oxidation on Ni 2 P catalyst while the active sites arising from Ni(II) ion oxidation was following a surface-redox-reaction-controlled process. Kinetics studies by impedance spectroscopy and Tafel slope analysis displayed improved charge-transfer kinetics towards urea electrooxidation. The results demonstrated that Ni 2 P would have potential applications for catalytic urea oxidation.

Modification of membranes is an effective method for degrading organic pollutants and alleviating membrane fouling. In this study, CuO-Fe 3 C-C catalyst was prepared by high-temperature pyrolysis. The membrane modified by CuO- Fe 3 C-C was prepared by vacuum filtration. The bacteriostatic rate of the modified membrane can reach to 96.8 %. Compared to the pristine membrane, the pure water flux of the modified membrane increased from 223.43 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 to 422.27 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 , the flux recovery ratio (FRR) of modified membranes increased from 39.7 % to 79.25 %. Removal rate of TC (Tetracycline) by modified membrane activated PMS can reach to 90.75 %. After 5 cycles, the degradation efficiency of modified membranes was still 83.77 %, which was only 6.39 % lower than that of the first cycle. Free radical quenching experiments and ESR tests explored the possible catalysis and antifouling mechanisms of the modified membrane system, the results showed main active species were SO 4 − •, OH•, O 2 − • and 1 O 2 . This study prepared membranes with excellent antifouling properties, providing a theoretical reference for alleviating membrane fouling in membrane-based water treatment.

Interface has often played significant role in the behavior of metal-based catalysts during various heterogeneous reactions. Herein, we reported a novel interfacial pathway for propane dehydrogenation on Pt-GaO x dual sites. The active ensemble, composing Pt particles and Ga 2 O 3 clusters, facilitates the facile dissociation of C–H bonds (energy barrier < 0.30 eV) through H-abstraction by O sites, coupled with alkyl stabilization on the Pt surface. Notably, the electronic perturbation of the Pt slab induces higher-lying O 2 p states at the interface, accompanied by a substantial density of states around fermi level. This is in stark contrast to the O species present in Ga 2 O 3 crystals or clusters alone, leading to an exceptionally strong affinity for H and a robust ability for C–H scission. The Pt/Ga-Al 2 O 3 catalysts prepared with Pt nanoparticles decorated by Ga oxide exhibit superior performance compared to Pt/Al 2 O 3 and PtSn/Al 2 O 3 catalysts. This insight into interfacial catalysis contributes to a broader understanding of the origin of the high catalytic efficiency observed in metal-based catalysts.

Cu 2 SnS 3 , recognized as a conversion and alloy type anode material for lithium-ion batteries, possesses a high theoretical specific capacity of 784 mAh g −1 and exhibits a distinct lithium storage mechanism. However, its intrinsically low electrical conductivity and pronounced volume expansion during cycling pose significant challenges to its practical battery performance. To address these limitations, Cu 2 SnS 3 @C (CTS@C) nanomaterials were synthesized by a one-step microwave-assisted method, utilizing ethylene glycol as a solvent and glucose as a carbon precursor. The incorporation of a carbon coating has been demonstrated to markedly improve the conductivity of the material and mitigate the volume expansion associated with lithium insertion and extraction. Electrochemical tests revealed that the CTS@C electrode exhibits superior electrochemical performance. Specifically, the CTS@C electrodes exhibited an initial discharge capacity of 612.8 mAh g −1 , with a retention of 295.8 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles at a current density of 500 mA g −1 . The carbon coating not only effectively enhances the conductivity of the electrode material, but also accelerates the electrochemical reaction rate, and enhances the diffusion rate of lithium ions, thereby significantly improving the electrochemical performance of the battery.

Ti(C,N) is commonly observed in vanadium titanomagnetite blast furnaces and greatly affects the stable and smooth operation of the smelting processes. To get fundamental insight into Ti(C, N) formation, systematic experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of the composition of slags, temperatures, reaction time and reaction atmosphere on the formation of Ti(C,N) from TiO 2 -containing slags. The results show that TiN and TiC contents increase with TiO 2 content increases. When TiO 2 is larger than 30 wt pct, TiN contents increase dramatically. Control of basicity, MgO and Al 2 O 3 concentrations in the slag could help to reduce Ti(C,N) contents in slags. TiN and Ti(C,N) contents increase dramatically with the extension of time. TiN is more easily formed at high temperatures, and TiN contents increase with the increase of temperature. With the increase of N 2 contents, TiC contents are relatively stable, and TiN and Ti(C,N) contents increase almost linearly. H 2 would greatly promote the formation of TiC. This paper can provide a theoretical basis for minimizing the formation of Ti(C,N) in different blast furnace conditions.

As a new type of efficient electrochemical energy storage system, the supercapacitor serves as an effective means to support the development of clean energy, with the electrode material being the key determinant of performance. The electrode material Pt-NiCo 2 O 4 /C was prepared in this paper by stepwise hydrothermal and calcination methods using ZIF-67 as a template, aiming to improve specific capacitance performance and stability. Pt-NiCo 2 O 4 /C achieved a specific capacitance of 1665.3 F/g at a current density of 1.0 A/g, and maintained 94.49% of the original specific capacity after 3500 cycles at a current density of 4.0 A/g. The excellent specific capacitance performance of the Pt-NiCo 2 O 4 /C electrode material makes it a promising potential candidate for energy storage applications.

There is a challenge to boost the electromagnetic wave absorption performance of magnetic carbon-based materials by rationally adjusting the structure of MOF. In this paper, nanoclip-shaped polypyrrole (PPy) was wrapped on the surface of the Co/C nanoparticle derived from Co-MOF via in-situ polymerization of pyrrole with the help of cetylammonium bromide. The electromagnetic parameters of prepared Co/C@PPy can be easily tuned by adjusting the feed ratio of PPy to Co/C. The optimum value of reflection loss (RL) for Co/C@PPy is −45.49 dB at 2.4 mm and 15.12 GHz when the feed ratio of pyrrole to Co/C is 200 μL to 80 mg, and the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB, RL ≤ −10 dB) reaches 5.97 GHz (11.76–17.73 GHz) at the matching thickness of 2.5 mm. This study paves the way for further design and preparation of the nanocomposites based on MOF-derived nanostructures with excellent EMW absorption performance.

C-lignin is a linear aromatic biopolymer with a uniform structure and acid resistance formed by catechol monomers linked through unique benzodioxane bonds. Compared to the heterogeneous guaiacyl (G)/syringyl (S)-lignin, the homogeneous nature of C-lignin enables its efficient depolymerization into a single catechol product, making it more suitable for downstream processing. This study investigated effects of various Brønsted acids and Lewis acids in a dimethyl isosorbide (DMI) /H 2 O co-solvent system on the C-lignin extraction from castor shells. Results show H 2 SO 4 assisted DMI/H 2 O co-solvent enables the most efficient disassembly of C-lignin containing sample with a yield of 95 mg/g castor shells. Quantitative 13 C NMR analysis indicates that the molar concentration of caffeyl alcohol units in the lignin is 2.06 μmol/mg, corresponding to 34.2 % C-lignin by weight at 120 °C within 2 h. The obtained C-lignin can be selectively converted to catechol derivatives (yield: 89 mol%) via Pd/C catalysis. This study demonstrates efficient pretreatment and utilization of C-lignin, offering a promising potential approach for its industrial uses.

Ceramic aerogels exhibit significant advantages for thermal insulation applications. However, their practical utilization is hindered by high manufacturing costs, inherent brittleness, and inadequate thermal resistance. In this study, inspired by the dual-network architecture of the human skin dermis, we developed a biomimetic aerogel-like ceramic thermal insulator (ACSM) via a scalable electrospinning and sol–gel strategy. The structural design integrates rigid alumina nanofibers with flexible carbon fibers, which are consolidated into a stable three-dimensional porous framework via nanoscale silica welding. This distinctive fibrous network imparts the material with a low bulk density (0.1107–0.1217 g/cm3), commendable compressive strength (0.31–1.76 MPa), and ultralow thermal conductivity (0.0512–0.0624 W/(m·K)). Furthermore, the three-dimensional mesh structure of the ACSM remains intact after heat treatment at 800 °C in a nitrogen atmosphere, confirming its exceptional thermal stability. Importantly, the material’s comprehensive performance can be precisely tuned by modulating the relative content of the two fiber components. This study establishes a robust foundation for the future development of advanced nanostructured biomimetic thermal insulation materials, with potential applications in aerospace, energy-efficient buildings, and thermal management.

The electrochemical co-reduction of CO 2 and nitrate provides a sustainable route for urea synthesis via C–N coupling, yet kinetic limitations and poor intermediate interactions hinder urea yields. Here, we engineer a nano-confined CuRu bimetallic catalyst within mesoporous carbon hollow spheres (MCHS) to overcome these barriers. By spatially confining reactants and intermediates, the catalyst achieves a urea yield of 12.51 g h –1 g cat –1 at 250 mA cm –2 , with 125-hour stability. In situ spectroscopy and computational analyses reveal that nano-confinement switches the C–N coupling pathway from the thermodynamically favored *COOH–*NH 2 to kinetically driven *OCO–*NO intermediates, bypassing energy barriers. Precise pore-size engineering (4–11 nm) demonstrates that optimal confinement simultaneously enhances reactant transport and intermediate retention, boosting selectivity. This work establishes nano-confinement as a versatile approach for controlling multi-step electrocatalytic processes, enabling sustainable chemical synthesis. This study introduces a nano-confined CuRu catalyst that leverages confinement effects to enhance CO 2 –nitrate C–N coupling by improving reactant transport and strengthening the stabilization of key reaction intermediates, thereby achieving high urea yield and long-term operational stability.
