High-Performance Ultrapure Green CdSe/CdS Core/Crown Nanoplatelet Light-Emitting Diodes by Suppressing Nonradiative Energy Transfer

Zuoliang Wen,Pai Liu,Jingrui Ma,Siqi Jia,Xiangtian Xiao,Shihao Ding,Haodong Tang,Hongcheng Yang,Chaojian Zhang,Xiangwei Qu,Bing Xu,Kai Wang,Kie Leong Teo,Xiao Wei Sun

Colloidal nanoplatelets (NPLs) are an emerging semiconductor nanocrystal in the display community due to their ultranarrow emission linewidth. Herein, an ultrapure green emitting nanocrystal light-emitting diode (LED) based on four-monolayer CdSe/CdS core/crown NPLs is developed. By applying the nonstacked nanoplates, the nonradiative energy transfer in the NPLs film is successfully suppressed. The nonstacked NPL-LEDs with pure green emission of 521.5 nm exhibit a low turn-on voltage of 2.1 V, a maximum luminance of 22 400 cd m −2 , a peak external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 2.16%, which is a sixfold enhancement comparing to the stacked NPL-LED (EQE = 0.34%). This work demonstrates the potential of core/crown NPLs for ultrawide color gamut displays.

A cathodic photocorrosion-assisted strategy to construct a CdS/Pt heterojunction photocatalyst for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Jianming Fan,Jinhua Xiong,Dayue Liu,Yuanping Tang,Song He,Zhibiao Hu

A novel strategy was developed to fabricate a CdS/Pt photocatalyst (defined as CdS/w%Pt-PAR) via the cathodic photocorrosion effect of CdS. A tentative mechanism for Pt deposition on CdS via the cathodic photocorrosion effect was proposed, based on a series of electrochemical characterization methods, such as cyclic voltammetry and Mott-Schottky tests. Transmission electron microscopy verified that Pt was grafted on the CdS surface via a heterojunction. Moreover, a strong interaction between Pt and CdS was further confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The optimal photocatalytic H2 evolution rate of CdS/2%Pt-PAR was 1086.1 μmol h−1, 6.4 and 2.6 fold higher than that of the reference samples synthesized by traditional photodeposition (CdS/2%Pt-PD) and chemical reduction (CdS/2%Pt-CR) methods, respectively. Linear sweep voltammetry and fluorescence experiments verified that CdS/2%Pt-PAR has a lower H2 evolution overpotential and faster separation of photogenerated carriers, respectively, compared with CdS/2%Pt-PD and CdS/2%Pt-CR. This work paves a new route for fabricating CdS/metal photocatalysts with highly efficient and stable photocatalytic H2 evolution activity.

Gear-shaped mesoporous NH2-MIL-53(Al)/CdS P-N heterojunctions as efficient visible-light-driven photocatalysts

Huanan Zhao,Zipeng Xing,Siyi Su,Sijia Song,Zhenzi Li,Wei Zhou

NH 2 -MIL-53(Al)/CdS p-n heterojunctions are fabricated via facile two-step hydrothermal method. The formation of p-n heterojunctions could form built-in field, which favors spatial charge separation. The resultant NH 2 -MIL-53(Al)/CdS p-n heterojunctions with narrowed band gap extend the photoresponse, and have a high specific surface area of 417.7 m 2 g −1 , and a narrow pore size of 8.8 nm. Under visible light irradiation, the photocatalytic efficiency for reduction of Cr(VI) and removal of refractory pesticide trichlorophenol is up to 99.23 and 98.85 %, respectively. The photocatalytic oxygen evolution is also as high as 563.6 μmol g −1 h −1 . The excellent photocatalytic activity can be ascribed to the efficient p-n heterojunctions accelerating charge transfer and favoring spatial charge separation, and the special mesoporous structure supplying adequate surface-active sites and facilitating mass transfer. This facile strategy opens up new insights for fabricating other p-n heterojunctions photocatalysts with efficient solar energy conversion.

Blue-light-blocking CdS-PMMA nanocomposite films with tunable cut-off wavelength and narrow absorbing transitional band

Li Xinxin,Xu Jinku

The widespread application of white light-emitting diodes makes us surrounding by plenty of blue-rich light, promoting the development of blue-light-blocking filters because blue light between 415 and 455 nm wavelength can cause light damage to the retina cells. While longer wavelength blue light is also essential to trigger physiological responses, which puts forward higher requirements for the precise blue-light-blocking ability of the filters. In this paper, CdS quantum dot (QD) with strong absorption in the blue region was synthesized and its size was regulated by extended reaction time. Polymerizable molecule was chemically grafted on CdS surface and then copolymerized with methyl methacrylate (MMA) monomer for transparent films with a narrow absorption transition band (wavelength span from 0.05 to 0.8 T max ) about 20 nm and tunable cut-off wavelength at 0.05 T max from 436.9 to 447.8 nm due to quantum size effect of CdS QD. This provides a possibility for more accurate adjustment of the blue-light-blocking performance, minimizing the harmful visual damage of short-wave blue light and preserving the beneficial physiological effects of long-wave blue light.

Hollow ZnS–CdS nanocage based photoelectrochemical sensor combined with molecularly imprinting technology for sensitive detection of oxytetracycline

Xinyu Bai,Yao Zhang,Wenkai Gao,Danyang Zhao,Dapeng Yang,Nengqin Jia

A novel hollow ZnS–CdS nanocage-based molecularly imprinted photoelectrochemical (ZnS–CdS/rMIP PEC) sensor was designed for sensitive detection of oxytetracycline (OTC). O-phenylenediamine was electropolymerized onto hollow ZnS–CdS nanocages to form a polymer film, and then OTC molecules were imprinted on the polymer film through hydrogen bonding . When OTC was eluted, many specific recognition sites were formed on the polymer membrane for detecting OTC in samples. It is worth noting that the rhombohedral dodecahedral structure of hollow ZnS–CdS nanocage can provide large specific surface area, allowing more OTC molecules to be imprinted into the polymer film. Moreover, the unique hollow structure and the heterojunction formed by ZnS and CdS can significantly enhance the photocurrent response. Furthermore, molecular imprint polymer (MIP) technology greatly improves the selectivity and sensitivity of the constructed PEC sensor for detection of OTC. Under optimal conditions, the ZnS–CdS/rMIP PEC sensor has prominent linear relationship in the range of OTC concentration from 1 nmol L −1 to 3 μmol L −1 , and the detection limit is 0.10 nmol L −1 (S/N = 3). It is gratifying that the fabricated ZnS–CdS/rMIP PEC sensor displays excellent selectivity for OTC detection when interferences with similar structure exist. It also exhibits superior reproducibility and stability as well as high recovery in the investigation of actual water samples. The combination of PEC and MIP technology will provide significant reference value for effective and rapid detection of other pollutants in the environment.

A solar light regenerated adsorbent by implanting CdS into an active covalent triazine framework to decontaminate tetracycline

Xiaoxue Yang,Xue Bai,Yuxuan Ma,Dan He,Xiaojing Wang,Yuwei Guo

In this investigation, CdS samples with different morphologies (one-dimensional rod-shaped CdS-R, two-dimensional thin layer CdS-P, three-dimensional nanospheres CdS-S) were synthesized by hydrothermal and solvothermal methods, respectively. Then, a photocatalytic regenerated active carbon adsorbent was obtained by assembling the prepared CdS samples into an alkali-activated covalent triazine-base framework (ACTF). The structure, morphology and chemical states of CdS and CdS-ACTF were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM and XPS. By estimating the decontamination of tetracycline, CdS-P/ACTF composite displays the best removal rate (99.7% for 20 mg·L −1 initial tetracycline under 90 min simulated solar light irradiation). In addition, compared with the single-phase CdS, the hybrid material presents a good reusability with a still 80% degradation rate at successive 300 min of 5 runs tests under solar light illuminating, indicating its excellent structural stability and photo-regenerated ability. An adsorption and photo-regenerated mechanism was proposed in which ACTF contributes to the strong adsorption of contamination due to its ultra-high specific surface area and CdS contributes to solar light decomposition with a strong photocatalytic oxidative activity. In addition, the regenerated ability was further enhanced by inhibiting carriers’ recombination through a quickly electron transport, ascribing to the well electronic conductivity of ACTF. Consequently, it is highly desirable that CdS-ACTF could be used as a promising adsorbent to eliminate tetracycline residues from the environment and easily to be regenerated with solar light.

Improved photocatalytic hydrogen evolution on (Ru/WC)/CdS via modulating the transferring paths of photo-excited electrons

Keying Lin,Li Feng,Dekang Li,Jiawei Zhang,Wei Wang,Baojun Ma

It is urgent to deep understanding the electron transfer mechanism in composite co-catalyst for efficient photocatalytic H 2 evolution. Here, choosing Ru and WC as probes, (Ru/WC)/CdS and Ru/(WC/CdS) are designed. The Ru and WC show a synergistic effect in (Ru/WC)/CdS on photocatalytic H 2 evolution. The optimum (Ru/WC)/CdS shows 16.8 mmol/h/g of H 2 evolution, which are 1.93 and 1.34 times of that Ru / CdS and WC/CdS, respectively. Amazingly, the Ru / (WC/CdS) is inferior to WC/CdS, and the Ru shows harmful to WC in H 2 evolution. The role of WC and Ru in photocatalysts and the electron transfer path of composite catalysts with different assembly methods are demonstrated. This study shows the relationship between activities and transferring paths of photoexited electrons.

Effect of mixed Mo/W polyoxometalate modification on photoelectrocatalytic activity of CdS nanocrystals for arsenic(III) oxidation

Yuting Song,Wencheng Fang,Caixia Liu,Zhixia Sun,Fengyan Li,Lin Xu

Modification of semiconductor materials by polyoxometalates (POMs) is a promising strategy for increasing their photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) activity. In this work, we synthesized POM-modified CdS composite nanocrystals based on three kinds of Keggin-type mixed-addendum Mo/W POMs (Ag 3 PMo 3 W 9 O 40 , Ag 3 PMo 6 W 6 O 40 , and Ag 3 PMo 9 W 3 O 40 ). This is the first report on the semiconductor properties of the three Keggin-type mixed-addendum Mo/W POMs. Their PEC performances were studied by transient photocurrent responses, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy , and PEC oxidation of As(III) to As(V). The PEC performances of POM-modified CdS composite nanocrystals (CdS/Ag 3 PMo 3 W 9 O 40 , CdS/Ag 3 PMo 6 W 6 O 40 , and CdS/Ag 3 PMo 9 W 3 O 40 ) were superior to the performance of pure CdS nanocrystals. CdS/Ag 3 PMo 3 W 9 O 40 composite nanocrystals exhibited the highest efficiency for the PEC oxidation of As(III) to As(V), which was about 85% higher than that of the pure CdS nanocrystals. The present study provides insight into developing novel composite nanocrystals with Keggin-type mixed Mo/W POMs for efficient PEC oxidation.

Cobalt Phosphate Cocatalyst Loaded-CdS Nanorod Photoanode with Well-Defined Junctions for Highly Efficient Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

Song Zhimin,Zhu Xiaodi,Zeng Yusheng,Wang Azhu,Li Shikuo,Fan Yi,Cai Mengdie,Cheng Qin,Wei Yuxue,Sun Song

Abstract Cocatalysts play important roles in photocatalytic and photoelectrochemical water splitting reactions. However, the formation of well-defined junctions between low dimensional semiconductors and cocatalysts is still challenging. In this study, CdS nanorod photoanodes loaded with cobalt phosphate (CoPi) cocatalyst were synthesized by a facile two-step route, in which CdS nanorods were prepared using a hydrothermal method followed by photo-assisted electrodeposition of CoPi. It was found that the formation of intimate junctions between CoPi and CdS nanorods in the form of Co–S bonding effectively facilitated the charge separation and lowered the activation energy of the water oxidation reaction. This resulted in highly efficient and stable photoelectrochemical water splitting on the CdS photoanode. The optimal CdS/CoPi photoanode showed a maximum photocurrent of 4.7 mA/cm 2 at 0 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode under an AM 1.5 G solar simulator, which was 5.5-fold higher than that of bare CdS photoanode. This work expands the potential application of the cocatalyst CoPi in CdS photoanode systems and improves our understanding of the nature of cocatalysts with well-defined interface junctions in semiconductors. Graphic Abstract Well-defined interfacial junction with Co–S bonding over cobalt phosphate cocatalyzed CdS nanorod photoanode facilitates the charge separation and lowers the activation energy, thus achieving a considerable photocurrent of 4.7 mA/cm 2 at 0 V vs. RHE.

Tunable KLa(MoO4)2:Eu3+@CDs composite materials for white LED and multi-mode information encryption technology

Ziqian Lv,Hanyu Xu,Zhiying Wang,Mochen Jia,Yanling Wei,Zuoling Fu

The composite of biocompatible carbon dots (CDs) and lanthanide-based luminescent materials have high research value as a promising multifunctional material, which are ideally suited to information encryption and white LED. However, the aggregation-induced quenching of CDs in the solid state still troubles the synthesis of CDs with other solid luminescent materials. Herein, a facile strategy to fabricate polychromatic nanoplatform KLa(MoO 4 ) 2 : Eu 3+ @CDs by encapsulating CDs on the surface of KLM: Eu 3+ with silicon shell is reported, in which the aggregation-induced quenching of CDs is avoided. Due to the overlapping of Eu-O charge transfer band with CDs excitation band, the red luminescence of Eu 3+ ions and the blue fluorescence of can be emitted simultaneously under 395 nm excitation. By changing the proportion of KLa(MoO 4 ) 2 : Eu 3+ in KLa(MoO 4 ) 2 : Eu 3+ @CDs, the mixture can emit "warm", "neutral", and "cold" white light, which can realize people's demand for indoor lighting requirements. Furthermore, a multi-mode information encryption by selectively triggering the luminescence of CDs or Eu 3+ ions is also designed. All the results suggest that KLa(MoO 4 ) 2 : Eu 3+ @CDs have excellent luminescence properties that can be further investigated and applied in the field of white LEDs and information encryption.

Synthesis of a CdS-decorated Eu-MOF nanocomposite for the construction of a self-powered photoelectrochemical aptasensor

Jie Gao,Yingxu Chen,Weihao Ji,Zhonghong Gao,Jingdong Zhang

A composite of CdS nanoparticles and a europium metal organic framework (Eu-MOF) (CdS/Eu-MOF) was synthesized. The unique properties of MOFs help to improve the photoelectrochemical (PEC) properties of CdS by reducing charge carrier recombination and utilizing a broader spectrum for light harvesting. Under visible light illumination, the photocurrent of the CdS/Eu-MOF composite modified electrode was about 2.5-fold higher than that of the CdS modified electrode. When an ampicillin (AMP)-binding aptamer was immobilized on the CdS/Eu-MOF modified electrode as a recognition element, a self-powered PEC aptasensor exhibiting a specific photocurrent response to AMP was constructed. Several experimental conditions such as the ratio of CdS to MOF, the coating amount of the CdS/Eu-MOF suspension and the concentration of the aptamer were studied. Under optimum conditions, the photocurrent of the developed sensor was linearly related to the logarithm AMP concentration in the range of 1 × 10−10 to 2 × 10−7 M, with a detection limit (3S/N) of 9.3 × 10−11 M. Moreover, this sensor exhibited excellent selectivity, good repeatability and desirable stability. It was successfully applied to the detection of AMP in lake water and milk samples.

Imaging of water soluble CdTe/CdS core-shell quantum dots in inhibiting multidrug resistance of cancer cells

Ning Xu,Mingxing Piao,Kamile Arkin,Lina Ren,Jinyu Zhang,Jiawei Hao,Yuxin Zheng,Qingkun Shang

Two different colors of water-soluble core-shell quantum dots CdTe/CdS (green and orange red) have been synthesized and characterized in this paper. The formation of core-shell quantum dots not only improves the fluorescence quantum yield , but also reduces the biological toxicity of quantum dots, and improves the fluorescence lifetime . Two novel fluorescent bioprobes, CdTe/CdS (λ em  = 545 nm)-5-Fu and Bio-CdTe/CdS (λ em  = 600 nm)-TAM, have been synthesized via the interaction of these two core-shell quantum dots with anticancer drugs (5-Fu) and P-gp inhibitors (TAM), respectively. These two fluorescent probes have been simultaneously used in fluorescence imaging of human breast cancer cells MDA-MB-231/MDR. It can be observed that under the action of P-gp inhibitors distributed on the cell membrane, anticancer drugs can be retained in cancer cells. According to the color of quantum dots on the probe, the visualization results of the action of anticancer drugs and P-gp inhibitors can be obtained. This study shows that to prepare functional bioprobes using core-shell quantum dots CdTe/CdS has great potential in the field of biomedical research such as anticancer drugs.
